This is a western romance set just after the Civil War.
Maggie is a Confederate soldier's widow. She is hoping to start a new life in Texas with her niece Cherish. They were both nurses in the War. Maggie has inherited a large house in Ft Worth, Texas and it turns out to be a former house of ill repute and gambling establishment.
Along the way, Maggie picks up as a driver, Captain Grayson, who was a Union soldier in the war and still is in the military.
He has the mission of finding a list of Confederate soldiers that killed a large number of slaves and stole a trunk of gold.
The gold and the list of these outlaws is rumored to be somewhere in the house that Maggie has inherited.
So, there is a lot of people trying to push them out of the house and take over their ownership so as to get at the gold and hide the list of the outlaws.
Meanwhile there is a romance between Maggie and Captain Grayson. And another romance between Cherish and an outlaw.
Lots of action and many problems to sort out.
Great adventure!

Couldn’t finish this due to all the KKK rhetoric. “This war wasn’t about slavery” yada yada yada
Just a lot of cringe.

This is a good story about post Civil War Texas and concerns a Yankee captain looking for members of an Klan type organization. Lots of action. I really enjoy Jodi Thomas' books.

I thought I had read this book several years ago. Now, I know I had not. The enjoyment of reading is a great pass time of mine. I will continue to read your books.

Unfortunately, this book seemed to be two stories cobbled together without giving either of them the depth they deserved. Not a very satisfying read.

A soft 3. The main heroine is a shrew. Her adult niece is tstl. The hero's are dumb as rocks. The priest is a psychopath. The kid and the madam seem nice though.

I was reminded why I never read "romance" books. I actually skimmed to the end and I'm done. Not my type of story at all.

It was okay. Not really my cup of tea, but I do enjoy westerns. This is a romance novel with plenty of bodice ripping, but has a good story sprinkled in.
