In this hilarious rhyming story, little monsters learn the art of scaring trick-or-treaters. Follow zombies, ghouls, ghosts and many more creepy creatures as they study the most spooktacular ways to terrify their guests. Will they be able to perfect their frightening ways before Halloween? Fright School is a welcome addition to the Halloween genre that will have kids cracking up at what "school" looks like for the very monsters that scare them. And in the end, it teaches kids that they don't need to be scared of monsters--the monsters might be just as scared of them!
Janet Lawler is the author of many books for children and is particularly inspired by the natural world. Her inspiration for this book came after listening to a YouTube recording of ten hours’ worth of walrus sounds, after which she wanted to learn more about these interesting creatures and share that knowledge with young readers. She had great fun creating words that reflect the weird noises walruses make! Janet Lawler lives with her family in Connecticut.
Such a cute story about monsters going to Fright School to learn how to scare Trick or Treaters on Halloween Night! I really loved it and highly recommend it to kids of all ages.
Cute holiday book. Lots of different Halloween creatures inside this book. They’re all learning how to be scary for Halloween but when Halloween arrives and the first trick-or-treaters arrive, did they learn anything? Who scares who when that door opens up? Ha! There is a lot of activity on the pages of this book, colorful pages too. Some words and the content might be difficult for some readers: gauze, diplomas, leer, spike, seeping, etc. . Also the content of the language might be difficult so some explaining might be needed.
This was a cute take on child-monsters for halloween. For me the pictures and text were a little too busy/forced to fit the rhyme-scheme. The ending reminds me of monsters-inc with the children scaring the monsters.
Little monster students head to school to learn how to scare trick-or-treaters. It's a funny twist on what kids do at school for Halloween. Allows for a lot of different actions for kids to do as you read. I like the twist ending too.
A twist in perspective about Halloween preparation. Readers see the monsters attend school to prepare to scare trick or treaters. The rhythmic text offers a look at all the ways they work together and on their own. Love the surprise ending.
The school/town populated by monsters is a pretty common book theme, and I've read a bunch of them--including at least one more also published this year. And this particular installment feels rather generic. Same with the illustrations, it's colorful but doesn't elevate it beyond average.
This was ok. We've read better Halloween books. I think the writing tried a little too hard to rhyme. The illustrations are colorful and gave us a little chuckle.
Cute Halloween book. Some of the rhyme felt forced and the word choices made to fit the meter. Not a favorite, but at Halloween would probably be fun for kids.
