A wild cast of characters, a cute fur ball…and secrets are exposed. Savage Sourdough is a bit different than the other light hearted mystery stories in the Cozy Corgi series. It will take a lot more than Fred and Watson to solve this mystery.
Fred and Watson have settled into the small town of Estes Park. Not every loves them, but that’s okay. That’s just life.
She has her beloved book store and above it is her best human friend, Katie, and her bakery. They are a perfect fit.
I knew there was a secret surrounding Katie, but like Fred, I let it go figuring when the time was right, she would tell. NOW… Death and danger surround her and she realizes the time is right.
Fred’s family is quite the collection of quirky characters. There are too many to describe individually, but when they circle the wagons around Katie, it makes her realize how much she is loved and accepted.
Romance…there is always something in the air, we are just not sure what….
Mildred Abbot has kept us all guessing at who could be behind the mystery. Of course, we have plenty of chuckles and sweet moments while investigating. After all, it is a cozy mystery. The more time I spend with her wacky family and her sweet furball, the more I love them. Even as I type these words, I have a smile on my face.
It doesn’t matter the order read, they all stand alone, but why wouldn’t you want to start at the beginning?
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Savage Sourdough by Mildred Abbott.
Fred ( wWinifred) and Watson the sweet corgi are back. In book 4 Fred is happy with her bookshop Cozy Corgi business with Katie upstairs with her bakery. Katie is keeping secrets about her life that Fred does not know anything about. Sammy helps Katie in her bakery. But Fred and Katie that they need to let her go. Carla from Black Bear Roaster ( a coffee shop and cardboard pastries that what Fred call them) is due to have her a baby at any time She goes to Fred bookshop and tells at all of them telling them that they are taking her costumers ( Katie and Sammy) and Two woman Regina and Penelope come to bookshop and say they want to buy they're property because they are 5th cousins to Lois and Opal from book 1. I Absolutely loves these series they are fun and exciting to read. If you love Corgis and know how they are. You will fall in love with Watson. These series are great cozy mysteries
4 stars for the latest in the Cozy Corgi Mystery series. I like when Fred has to solve a mystery for a close friend or family member because she is really vested in the outcome and I enjoy the personal connection. In this case, the murder mystery involves her close friend Katie who runs the amazing bakery upstairs from Fred's Cozy Corgi bookstore. We learn more about Katie's mysterious past, Susan Greene actually becomes (slightly) less unpleasant and annoying, and Fred's love life (or lack thereof) is still on hold. Another great read and I look forward to the next book in the series!
Fred and Katie are in real danger. A killer is out for one or both of them. The triangle between Brandon, Fred, and Leo gets even more muddled. Watson displays great courage. This has been my favorite in the series so far.
This is my favorite of the series so far. The mystery was the most involving yet, and it finally gave us a chance to see into Katie's past and into Susan's mindset. Plus all the action scenes made me desperately wish for this to be turned into a series of Hallmark films. Seriously, that scene in the woods with Fred rolling down and embankment: I can just picture Alicia Witt running through underbrush and hiding behind a tree trunk while the camera swoops in for a closeup and synthesized strings crescendo before fading out to commercial at the halfway point. MAKE IT HAPPEN, HALLMARK!
Now that The Cozy Corgi is up and running and a huge success, Fred is looking forward to curling up in her favorite nook with a good mystery. That all flies out the window when another dead body is discovered in her kitchen in the bakery upstairs. Time for Fred and Watson to get back to what they love, sniffing out a killer.
I very much enjoyed the first three books and couldn’t wait to dig into this one. I was pleasantly surprised to find not only another complicated mystery to figure out, but a bit darker one. And so many new details about the characters of Estes Park. I barely came up for air as I learned so many wicked little secrets.
I always wondered about Watson. Fred hinted about his origins in the first books but now I know how these two found each other. Or I should say how Watson found Fred. Fascinating stuff.
Still not sure what’s up with Sergeant Branson and getting more and more curious. Where does he go when he’s not working? I’m sure Fred will eventually sort that out. And I wonder if their brush with romance is really over.
There’s also some fun happenings with Officer Susan Green. Her and Fred loathe each other, but more is revealed about Susan and the two gals might be warming to each other. I do say might be.
It’s more madcap fun with these colorful characters and a mystery that leads you down many mistaken paths. I’m still loving this series and now deep into the next book, Scornful Scones.
I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.
I've been cautiously optimistic about this series but now I'm not so sure. Love the mystery, the small town setting, the quirky secondary characters and am a huge Watson (resident bookshop corgi) fan. And I even like Fred (Winifred) though she can be a little snippy when it comes to defending her 'right' to meddle in murder investigations. The thing that has me sitting on the fence about this series is that not only is there a malingering love triangle but it's looking like there's an overlapping love triangle involving Fred and her bestie and one of the guys in the first love triangle. Does that make any sense? Basically none of these characters seem to be able to make up their minds and use their words. I'm not a fan of love triangles in general but I'm especially not a fan of stilted, long drawn out ones that seem to be that way simply because the author doesn't want anyone to get romantically involved too soon in a longstanding series. Gah! It just feels forced and annoying. And series have successfully avoided the whole love triangle trope from the start and are still going strong 20+ books in (Meg Langslow for example) without any dip in popularity. So, might be DNFing the series here.
I hate to repeat myself but these books are too cute. This was another one of the series that I couldn't figure out the killer. Maybe I'm not trying hard enough. I had an idea of who the killer was and I'm very glad that I was wrong. I love learning more and more about Fred and Watson but in this book you got to especially learn about Katie, the baker, and i love her even more. By the way, Mildred Abbott, I want a Cozy Corgi sweatshirt!
Fred Page's bookstore, The Cozy Corgi, has been open for two months now. She owns the lease outright and business is picking up, despite tourist season being months away. Katie's bakery has become the local hangout, enraging Carla, owner of the Black Bear Roaster. Both Fred and Katie are delighted with how their dreams are coming true, however, Katie thinks Sammy may not work out after all, despite her mad baking skills. Dreams are made to be broken, however, and Regina and Penelope Garble are determined to dash Fred's dreams. Distant cousins of Opal and Lois, the second pair of sisters have inherited the shops on either side of Fred's and want to buy her out to build a massive "dumpster healed" (read: junk) store. Fred is adamant that no amount of money could get her to sell. Katie feels the same way but Sammy disagrees. Then Fred discovers Katie lying face down, dead on the bakery floor! Fred is relieved to discover the deceased is in fact Sammy but that doesn't mean she is going to stay out of the investigation. Obviously someone wants Fred gone or Katie framed. The clues don't lead anywhere except to the hard truth that someone tried to kill Katie and mistook Sammy for Katie. Katie insists this can't be true but Fred knows Katie well enough to know that whatever secrets Katie is hiding may lead to the killer.
This mystery is much darker and less plausible than any of the others. Katie's revelations made me sit up in bed and yelp "WHAT?!" Her backstory is so far fetched and unbelievable. The mystery becomes clear pretty early on, it's just a matter of Fred figuring out who. The killer's motivate didn't make sense either. I also didn't like how Fred plays hot and cold with Leo. She doesn't want to be in a relationship but then she doesn't like when it seems like Leo and Katie are an item. Which is it Fred? Her relationship with Branson is a little better but not much. The story is saved largely by Watson who is just so adorable I can't stand it! He shows how much he loves his Mama and how she still needs him.
I liked getting to know Susan Green better. She's more nuanced than she seems but her anger at Fred is misplaced. She seems to hate "bougie" people (as my young co-worker says). Susan is a police officer and should know to be in possession of all the facts before passing judgement and not to make assumptions. I don't know why Branson keeps her on staff. She's rude to him as well. Her brother is equally rude to Fred but at least he has good reason to be in that moment. Also in the rude category are Regina and Penelope. They may be 5th cousins of Lois and Opal but their personalities are similar. They think money talks and they can bully their way to getting what they want. First of all, who would close a brand new business just to move it? That doesn't make sense. Second of all, why start such a massive shop before knowing if there's a market for your product? Their entry into the story was just too forced to add some drama.
Sammy is not a likable character. She's not fully developed before she's killed. She appears on scene to apply for a job working for Katie in one book and then she's hired the next day. That is strange. There may have been a reason she looked so much like Katie. Carla believes Sammy was trying to steal her business, that I can believe, but was Sammy trying to become Katie and steal Katie's business? Creepy! If she doesn't have the money to open her own bakery then she needs to keep her mouth shut and do her job. She makes Carla seem a bit more sympathetic.
Katie, on the other hand, is adorable. She is the sweetest, most passionate person in the book. I love her dedication to baking and building her dream business. She has great taste in favorite TV shows too. I like her possible budding relationship with Leo. He is also sweet and kind. Fran doesn't deserve him but Katie does.
The supporting characters largely take a backseat here. I do enjoy visits with Fred's quirky family. Her stepdad is the worst businessman but he's such a sweetheart. His daughters are more than a bit odd. One has two daughters named Britney and Christina! REALLY?! I don't get much more than an impression of them from Fred's point-of-view. They're more like quirky character sketches than real people. Fred's Uncle Percival is getting on my nerves. He's constantly belittling her style choices (bullying in the form of teasing) and he isn't very kind to his husband in this book. Why are they even together?
After this weird plot, I'm done with this series. As much as I love Watson and the Cozy Corgi, I can't stand any more random plots or Fred's hot and cold relationships with men.
Hooray! this month just got brighter with the release of a new book in the Cozy Corgi Mystery series. SAVAGE SOURDOUGH centers around that amazing bakery on the second floor of the Cozy Corgi bookshop. A page or so in and you can smell, the buttery, cinnamon, lemony fragrances. I have come to love these wry escapes into the picture-perfect town of Estes Park. This fourth book does not disappoint. It is March, still snowy, still mostly locals. The bakery has quickly become the gathering place for scrumptious pastries, freshly baked breads, all-natural dog bones, and of course local gossip. Katie has become the perfect partner and Fred has accepted her nearly identical looking assistant Sammy into the Cozy Corgi family. SAVAGE SOURDOUGH is extremely suspenseful, with an unbelievable murder, in the bakery again. A truce is called between Officer Green and Fred at last, not best friends but a truce. Fred widens her information gathering and we meet the inhabitants of Alakazam, the magic shop. Not that stepping into a wizard’s closet filled with gadgets, gizmos, crystals and costumes is usual. However meting Glenda, the flighty old fairy and Mark Green the proprietors of the shop, Fred’s determination to solve the murder is newly determined but not straightforward. Add in gunshots with a silencer, a deliberate attempt to push Fred, Watson, and Katie off a cliff, crashing her beloved Mini Cooper, beware this book refuses to allow the reader to put it down. Mildred Abbott does not permit us to take Watson for granted either. We watch him play in gentle snow falls, dive into snow drifts and then try to chose between his favorite humans. Although, as before, this brave Corgi has a paw or two into solving the mystery. SAVAGE SOURDOUGH is another episode in the not to be missed COZY CORGI MYSTERY series.
I just started this series yesterday finishing the first three yesterday and finishing this one tonight. Fred and Katie have really developed into wonderful characters. I can't wait to find out more about Branson's secrets. Will The Ranger and the baker become more than friends? What will happen with the step siblings, their families, and the stores? Is Paulie doing ok wherever he is? Did Santa and his wife enjoy their trip to a warmer climate for a few weeks? What will happen next? I must try to get some sleep...#5 will have to wait until tomorrow...but before I retire, I will order the rest of the series!
These are really intriguing mysteries. The characters feel like people I really know. I envision the town and shops as familiar and lovely places filled with people who have multiple layers..through each book, I get to learn a little more about each one. Milded Abbott is really skilled at laying out the stories.
I highly recommend this series...and be sure to try out the included recipes! Delicious!
This was an enjoyable, solid 3.5 star cozy mystery. It is the fourth book in this series but the first book I could find at the library. I just happened to read another dog cozy back-to-back with this one which was great. Unlike the Chet & Bernie series where the dog is a main character, this dog is just an adorable, furry companion who helps out in "dog ways" (i.e., growling at the untrustworthy, biting enemies when needed, etc.). But since I love cozy mysteries and am corgi crazy, it would be impossible for me to not try this series. The Cozy Corgi is a bookstore with a bakery above and, of course, a store corgi - I want this place to exist so I may go there. Better yet, I would like to own it and can provide my own corgi. I will definitely read more of this series but will probably try to find book 1 and fill in from there - not reading in order makes my OCD unhappy. lol!
This was more of a 3.5 stars. It was still a good story but not as good as the first three. Fred has to solve the murder of Katie’s lookalike, her cooling love triangle with Branson and Leo, her jealousy over the thought that Katie and Leo may be getting close ( I mean why, she doesn’t want a relationship, remember 😒😒🙄).
Watson was a gem as always as was Fred’s extended family. I still don’t like Branson.
I have loved all of the stories in the Cozy Corgi mystery series and Savage Sourdough is no exception. Set in a small-town setting that I would love to live in; these whodunits are so much fun to read and try to figure out. Though, it seems my sleuthing skills are a bit lacking as I always seem to be surprised as to who the killers are…lol.. Savage Sourdough definitely has some very unexpected twists and turns and an ending that I never saw coming. I love Fred and Watson and the outlandish characters who make up the small Estes Park community. They have all quickly become like old friends to me and I always look forward to the next story to see where Mildred Abbott will take them and me next!
I really think the series just keeps getting better. Savage Sourdough is so cute. While Fred and Watson make me laugh constantly, Susan and Fred had me rolling at least once in the book. In Bickering Birds I kinda figured out "who done it" quickly, not so for this 4th book. Great Job, Mildred Abbott, for keeping us on our toes!!!
This book is better than the last 3. The storyline is a little more surprising (less predictable) than the other ones. A very enjoyable, fast, light (but includes some action) read.
We should have known things were too good to be true for Winifred Page. This episode has her being settled into her new life as a book store owner with Katie happily ensconced in her bakery upstairs and having employed Sammy as her bakery assistant. But.... All too soon another body in the bakery is found. Life in Estes Park is becoming more like Midsomer Murders - a dangerous place to be. This is another well written murder mystery with just the right amount of humour laced into the seriousness of the situations Fred finds herself in. There are so many strands to this story and when we get to the end there is only one thread still left untied. Why does Branson keep disappearing? Will we ever find out? Loved it!!
Poor Fred and Watson - they can't seem to catch a break with all these bodies falling in their paths. Watson has a personality that I know all too well - moody, slightly grumpy, with a touch of sass (reminds me of myself!). I love Watson's role in the book. Fun but not overdone. Fred settles in more with each book and continues to find her way in Estes Park. The bookstore and bakery are becoming quite then sensation for the locals and chances are, Fred has crossed paths with the murderer. The vision you get from Abbott's words make you feel cozy, yet curious and extremely in the mood for a snack! We finally get through the icy hard layer of Susan and close the door on Fred's romance endeavors for a bit. Katie took center stage for me in this book. I enjoyed learning more about her character and her past.
I received a copy of the book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.
“Sixty percent of your brain is fat… Therefore all my carby, buttery, deliciously fatty foods make people smarter. I’m truly helping make America great again.” (Katie to Fred.)
“At least someone is.” Leo shot a wink in my direction and seemed on the verge of laughing. (Fred)
This is another great book by Mildred Abbott. Fred and Watson are back on the case. I think it’s no great surprise that Fred’s favorite television program is ‘Murder She Wrote’, while her best friend Katie is partial to the ‘Great British Bakeoff.’
So when a dead body shows up, Fred is on the case. There are numerous suspects in the murder and Sergeant Brandon Wexler seems happy to abdicate the investigation to Fred and Susan Green, disappearing without an explanation. Susan Green has always been antagonistic to Fred, very much a one-dimensional character. I liked the fact I got to know Susan much better in this book.
We learn more about Katie the baker’s past—the past she has repeatedly refused to discuss. She finally opens up and it was stunning. I certainly couldn’t have guessed, but it again adds to the depth of character. Finally, Leo the Ranger gets pulled into the mystery (yay!) and we get to discover more about him as well.
I enjoy Ms. Abbot’s cozies because they are good mysteries, have enjoyable characters, and are great reads. I didn’t see the ending coming and that was perfect.
Oh, and Fred’s uncle Percival almost – almost – got hold of Fred’s wardrobe to get rid of the broomstick skirts. It didn’t happen this time, but I have high hopes for the next book in the series.
Angie Hickman is a fabulous narrator for this series. She handles Fred so well and there are so many characters she gives great voices to. I'm glad she's along for the crazy corgi ride.
Not too long ago cosy mysteries were a go-to genre for me. When I lost myself in (MM) romance a few years ago, my mystery reading disappeared to the back-burner. Reading Savage Sourdough both reminded me how much I used to love these and other mysteries and made me realise that I’m losing a lot when I (mostly) limit myself to one genre.
Because what’s not to enjoy about a book filled with charming and fascinating characters, combined with a well-plotted mystery and a satisfying solution? Savage Sourdough provides all of that in spades.
I don’t want to say too much about the mystery in question except to say that it is intriguing, involves long held secrets, and comes with a fair amount of danger for Winifred and her friends.
And talking about Winifred, I have to admit I really liked her. Of course, it would be hard for me not to be charmed by a character who has more or less created my dream; a bookshop come coffee shop. Throw in her moody but adorable Corgi Watson (how appropriate is that name for the investigator’s side-kick?), and this book had charmed its way into my heart.
Overall this was a most enjoyable read. A fascinating mystery, interesting and quirky characters, some tension, and the suggestion of romance; what’s not to love?
I didn’t read the earlier Cozy Corgi Mysteries (an oversight I’ll have to fix as soon as possible). While I have to admit that I didn’t feel I missed out on anything due to lack of prior knowledge, I also have no doubt that I might have gotten even more enjoyment out of reading this book if I had read those earlier instalments.
Overall I have to say that if you happen to be a fan of this genre, the Cozy Corgi Mysteries come highly recommended.
As a reader and lover of mysteries, I will now admit I am addicted to this series!! Whew, there I said it out loud. Where have you been Mildred Abbott? But, thank goodness you are here now.
This is the Fourth Book in this series, as we cuddle up and spend some time in this small town of Estes Park nestled into the Colorado Mountains. Main street is a bustle of quaint stores, all waiting for ‘Season’ when the crowds come for vacationing.
Winifred (we call her Fred) has come here to settle after her divorce, and loss of her business. Her mother lives her with here with her new husband after the death of her first, who had been Fred’s Dad. Hew was a detective killed in the line of duty.Fred has come to set down roots, open her dream of a book store…She has now become the Nancy Drew of Estes Park and I Love These Stories.
Ms Abbott has slowly built a town we can visualize, people we recognize, and murder a plenty in this sleepy village. This particular story centered around Katie; her new best friend, business partner and fabulous baker extraordinaire. My mouth waters as the fabulous smells emanating out of the book as I read.
The tease of romance is just a hint…..The mystery with Fred and her almost human pet Watson are great…
Savage Sourdough (Cozy Corgi Mysteries book 4)by Mildred Abbott Fred and her dog Watson are just enjoying their shop Cozy Corgi, especially with best friend Katie’s bakery upstairs. Fred found the heavenly aromas of freshly baked treats that drifted downstairs were terribly hard to resist, not just for the customers of her bookshop! Her day began with a cup of dirty chai, shared with a hot buttered chocolate croissant freshly baked while Watson ate an especially large green dog bone. This morning however there was something wrong, the lights weren’t on, the air was cold with no fresh warm scents, and no sign of early bird Katie flitting behind the counter as she baked! Then to her horror Fred saw a body lying on the floor, and screaming out to Katie, she ran towards the lifeless girl. This was my fourth Cozy Corgi book and I enjoyed them all thoroughly, usually hating to put the ebook down once begun. I love this series and try to have another ebook ready to read when I am finished with this one.
Oh wow!! So many questions were answered for me in the episode...we learn more about Sammy and Katie. There is a little bit of mystery regarding romance for Fred. Susan Green explains a few things. And as always, Winston is the star of the book 😉 The characters of this series are becoming more and more detailed. The plot centers around murder (eye roll please) and attempted murder with plot twists leading to the unexpected ending. I'm currently binge reading the series and this one is the best--so far
Just love this series! There’s just something about Fred, Katie, Leo, Branson and the rest of the gang. I'm addicted...seriously! I was all over the place with Katie and her past. She kind of drove me crazy with her refusal of divulging her past and her obstinate pushing people away. There’s a difference between being independent and just being stupid with your safety. Poor Fred was really stuck between a rock a a hard place. Then you have Fred’s romances or lack of. Leo throws all sorts of mixed signals around. Friends? Potential lovers? Lovers of best friends? And Branson...he wants Fred...doesn’t want Fred...Fred needs to just date Kate and we can be done with it all! But this series is fun and keeps me guessing. The mysteries and suspense will always keep me jumping back in for more. And Watson. Grumpy old Watson.
Now that I have no more Cozy Corgi books to read, I decided that it was past time to write a review. Instead of just one book, though, let me just say that you should read the whole series. The quirky characters in this small Colorado town are delightful and the main character, Winifred (aka Fred), is fully fleshed out as a modern woman coping with real hurts and insecurities. She is also incredibly strong and resilient. Not that this series is heavy handed by any means. My disclaimer is that I am partial to corgis and Fred's corgi Watson is very much corgi! Do yourself a favor and buy this series, sit back with a decaf chai and enjoy!
If you love cozies and haven't read any of this series I highly recommend it. Savage Sourdough brings us back to the Cozi Corgi bookshop and bakery. It's Deja Vu for Fred and Katie when another body is found in the bakery. This time it's Katie'slook alike and assistant Sammy and the clues keep leading Fred to a dead end (pun intended)
Each one of these stories gets better and better. I think this one though is my favorite. It's cute, engaging, a page-turner and who doesn't love Watson. Mildred keeps giving us fun stories with quirky characters a mystery to solve and adorable dogs.
I'm really enjoying this series. Bookstore owner Fred and her moody but lovable corgi Watson are a wonderful team, and they are surrounded by characters as quirky and fun as they are. This time around, we learn more about Fred's best friend Katie, as Fred tries to solve the latest murder. There are some sad and some anxious moments, but humor and love for family and friends keep things from getting too angsty. I love these fictional Estes Park citizens, and I will continue to follow their adventures.
Another terrific book. Okay the storyline wasn't one I liked but it was well planned, crafted and executed. Kate's assistant is starting to throw her weight around but it is still a shock when her body is found in the bakery. What was it that she had done to cause it? When Kate is shot at, it looks as if her assistant was mistaken for her. Who has a grudge against Kate? Can Kate survive? A really good plot and terrific character studies but still not one I really enjoyed.
