The great tombs and temples of ancient Egypt still command wonder and admiration, evoking the magnificence of a mighty empire and the glorification of its semi-divine Pharaohs. Alternating periods of power and decline were vividly mirrored in the work of generations of artists and craftsmen, seldom departing from the set bounds of tradition and convention, who achieved marvels of monumental splendor and modest beauty, culminating in the varied masterpieces of the New Kingdom.
The Great Pyramid, the Sphinx, the portrait head of Nefertiti, the throne of Tutankhamon, the temples of Abu Sinbel, the frescoes from the Valley of the Kings—these and many other timeless art treasures are discussed and illustrated here in 103 splendid full-color illiustrations.
A short beautiful book summarizing the function of the several millennia of art and its state craft. The book suffers a bit from not having a better time line (it has a few pages of summary but the multitude of dynasties and rulers over nearly 30 centuries is overwhelming). The origin of pyramid building is well handled as are the basics of Egyptian magic.
