At first, I tried to go through this book and take notes all the way through, hoping to create a list-style guide to follow. Then I realized that the book itself is organized that way. I think it's best used as a handbook to refer back to whenever you need to develop an aspect of your music business.

For example, when I put out my first album with my new band Evergold, I'll refer back to really polish my marketing and release strategy. When I develop my first line of merchandise, I'll refer back for innovative/creative ideas to get the most out of it for myself and for my fans. When I'm looking for novel music opportunities, I'll refer back to the book for tons of creative ideas I never would have thought of.

The 4/5 review is because I wholeheartedly believe in the advice, and will be implementing it for the foreseeable future. However, it can be hard to read, as it's basically a giant list which covers all bases and leaves nothing out. If the advice leads to plenty of success in my music career, I'll definitely be coming back to give it a 5/5!

Save your money.
This book is written by a completely unknown band and is organized in such a way that’s just not helpful for a musician who’s building themselves from the ground up.

I appreciate information such as the part about finding a music distributor to share your music. But the way that the information is organized in this book makes it so that the author almost expects you to already have an established base, which if that was the case, you wouldn’t need this book.

There’s information about merchandise, licensing your music, record labels, etc. but how about the bare basics of...getting your first show? Your first fans? There’s hardly any tips for promoting yourself.

Maybe I should’ve done my research and realized that the authors of this book haven’t really gone anywhere with their defunct band before I spent my money on it. Heck, there’s even a part where the author writes, “and if you happen to give up on music, there are a lot of skills you get from being a musician that can help in a ‘normal’ job!”. I mean, what kind of defeatist bs is that?

Anyways, skip this book and save your money. Maybe there’s a book written by someone who has actually made something out of their music career.

The Music Industry has shifted. The 21st century market for the music maker is full of new models, challenges, and opportunities that haven't been seen before, nor fully realized. I am a certified Music Business Instructor and can attest to the difficulty many musicians have in navigating today's music field. This excellent book will help prepare you to identify and then take advantage of those manifold money-making opportunities. It's broken into three thorough sections; it helps you to organize your content (and team), shows you how to create a marketing strategy, and shows you the many ways you can use your content to generate revenue, while protecting yourself legally. I highly recommended this book, because you won't find a better all-in-one-place structural framework to teach you how to navigate today's Music Market.

As someone who has been in the industry professionally for a decade, this is an amazing book. Both for beginners and pro’s. Launching a new project next year and will be reading this again before I file the paperwork. FANTASTIC!

The book can be quite repetitive and “obvious”. A more succinct writing style could reduce the unnecessarily long (400 pages) book. However, it is sprinkled with useful tips and resources so all in all, a valuable tool for navigating today’s musical landscape.

I rounded up to 4 stars doe the sheer volume of ideas the authors provided. It certainly set my imagination working. I mistakenly requested this book, thinking it might apply to my Music majoring nephew. He was a performance major and a music theory graduate student. This book is more aimed at the solo artist or band, which I would have known had I read the entire synopsis. The authors write conversationally and, as I said, they provided many many avenues for artists to select from.
I received my copy through NetGalley under no obligation.
