These Pocket Guides are meant as brief, at a glance introductions to the Cities they cover. As such, it was useful for our trip to New Orleans.

The book is broken into easy to read sections for different areas of the City, and covers everything from bars and restaurants to shopping, tourist spots and curiosities.

Written in 2014, this book is starting to look a bit dated now (price guides are no longer accurate) buy overall it provides an excellent way to discover New Orleans.

This was my second Lonely Planet city pocket guide, and I've come to really like these books. They're portable, they break the sights to see down several ways (primarily by neighborhood), and their limited size means they don't get overwhelming. And, most importantly, the recommendations that I tried were good.

Other reviewers mentioned that this might not work as a stand-alone guidebook, but for my long-weekend trip I don't think even this book was necessary (though I did enjoy using it). For me, this book was sort of an anchor of information, and when I wanted more detail about a particular neighborhood or category of thing, I looked online. The kind of information available online is going to be the broadest and most up-to-date anyway. This was the perfect short book to set out the basics.

Okay, let's be clear: these pocket guides are not the most thorough things in the world -- nor are they intended to be. They're a quick overview of a given area's highlights, with a map in the back. They're a good size to stick in a pocket, backpack, or purse and not have to cart around an enormous book.

That said, if I didn't have any other guidebooks available to me besides this one, I probably would not rate it so high. I used the Lonely Planet Pocket Barcelona book last year for a brief business trip to Spain, and it was more than adequate to my needs. With a longer trip ahead of me, this book will mainly be serviceable because of the map.

Learn about the French Quarter, eat everything from jambalaya to beignets, or take a walking tour past the Garden District’s plantation-style mansions, these are some of the takeaways from this book.

I liked how they referenced the different areas of New Orleans including lodging, activities, historic sites, and restaurants.

The book includes city walks to help you explore the unique neighborhoods.

There are also maps to help guide you where everything is located.

Also, good notes of some of when to be around certain areas at night.

Very well organised; written clearly and concisely. Detailed maps; top 10 lists are a great touch.
