I'm a dream mage. I can control your dreams and destroy your mind from the inside out---all while you sleep.
I use my powers to protect innocent people from nightmare demons. I've seen stuff that would make your head explode. Literally. And I've made a lot of enemies.
When blood-thirsty demons show up on my doorstep one snowy night, so does someone dangerous from my past.
Someone that I've been running away from for a long time. But I'm done running.
It's time to face my past...and end the nightmare that has been haunting me all these years.
Dream Born is a fast-paced urban fantasy with a kickass African-American heroine. Experience lovable heroes, an unorthodox magic system, and crazy mindscapes that you'll dream about long after you're finished reading.
Michael La Ronn is the author of many science fiction and fantasy novels including the Android X, Eaten, and The Last Dragon Lord series.
In 2012, a life-threatening illness made him realize that life is too short. He’s devoted his life to writing ever since, making up whatever story makes him fall out of his chair laughing the hardest. He’s also a total Final Fantasy geek.
It's really hard to get into any kind of urban fantasy after reading Harry Potter, The Dresden Files and the Heartstriker's Series, but La Ronn's work piqued my interest enough to dive in.
Overall - a great book and wonderful start to a series. A dream mage for hire who makes coin by entering into other's dreams and does some deep psychology with magic. It's as if Freddy Kruger decided to stop being evil and help others out for financial gain.
Here's what I appreciate the most:
Back in my high school days, I always enjoyed stories (books, movies and video games) with strong female leads without it drawing attention to itself. Instead of saying, "Hey, look at me for being female and strong!" - they just were and it was an accepted part of the story.
The modern day example of this is the A Song of Fire and Ice series ("Game of Thrones" for those who follow the TV show). All the most powerful characters are women and it's an accepted part of the world with no further explanation needed.
Our heroine in this book is an African-American woman named Aisha, who is powerful and has an incredible amount of depth. La Ronn did an amazing job at showcasing how kickass women characters can be without breaking the reader from the story.
When you get to the end, which leaves on a cliffhanger, you're left with no other words but, "Damn..."
This book is fast-paced, draws you in and leaves you excited for more.
I guess this means there's one more urban fantasy series worth looking into.
This is kind of H.P. Lovecraft meets Survivors Remorse. I would say lovecraft country too but that is nearing American Horror story levels of crazy and this is not that mind bending in a good way. This is more Goosebumps for 16 and up.
Would be a decent introduction to urban fantasy for new readers.
Just about everyone has a clear character arch that makes me enjoy almost everyone.
It would have been nice if at least one character outside of the main cast would have been supportive in some way. It makes sense why certain character are the way they are, but it still would have been nice from the get go (one of these not supportive characters does a have a positive arch that would have them eventually become a role model for the main cast.)
Five stars for a light supernatural adventure - there were some moments I was afraid something would happen I didn't like, but it was perfect. I love the ending. Simply love it. Thank you, Michael La Ronn!
Very entertaining, I like the writing, I like the pacing, I like the characters... the villain was like Umbridge but intelligent... brrr... and her end... very satisfying! Thank you, again, Michael! :-D
It is a very quick read, and that it is interesting through the whole story makes it even quicker.
An enjoyable and fast-paced read, Dream Born by Michael La Ronn is a solid Urban Fantasy novel with plenty of action, adventure, magic, and excitement. La Ronn does an excellent job keeping the suspense alive, and creating plenty of mystery and intrigue along the way.
If you are a fan of fantasy stories, I recommend Dream Born by Michael La Ronn.
I enjoyed the authenticity of this book. I think some of the character development will occur in the next books but the characters and environment were real for me. Like seeing all parts of the black experience
I enjoyed reading a fresh take on dreams and will be diving into the second one soon. I liked the camaraderie of the family and enjoyed the author's personal tidbits at the end.
A fun light read. Good magic. Good plot. Interesting, if somewhat obvious, characters. Good for those who don't care about deep stories or character arcs.
