As far as relates to Classical criticism or controversy the best writers have been uniformly consulted, and where the limits of the volume would not admit of any extended detail, a reference has been made to such works as will furnish more ample sources of information as often too as it was practicable, an account of the latest and best editions of Classic authors has been given, in addition to those al ready cited by Dr. Lempriere.

John Lemprière (c. 1765, Jersey, – February 1, 1824), English classical scholar, lexicographer, theologian, teacher and headmaster. He achieved renown for his Bibliotheca Classica or Classical Dictionary containing a full Account of all the Proper Names mentioned in Ancient Authors, (Reading, November, 1788), which, edited by various later scholars, long remained a readable if not absolutely trustworthy reference book in mythology and classical history.

Reference to classical literature, writings, life. All names and places, Greek and Roman. A handy reference book to keep on the shelf. (But not something to curl up with a blanket and read.)
