May Be Too Hot To HandleElle Gray looks like a supermodel, thinks like a super agent, and can kill a man with her bare hands. But when she meets Dr. Beau Ruston, the brilliant scientist and ex-college football star in charge of the project she's been sent to protect, she wants more of her bare self around him than just her hands. If his muscular grace and quick wit hadn't turned her on, there would still be those big brown eyes . . . watching her suspiciously. With a man this smart and sexy questioning her cover, the bad guys are the least of her problems. Beau Ruston knows Elle is a government spy, and he doesn't like to be spied on-or lied to, no matter how charming the liar happens to be. Wait, did he say "charming"? Damn hot is more like it. He should know, chemistry is his business, whether it's in the lab or in the bedroom, but the reaction Elle is setting off might be too much for even him to control . . . "Monroe writes with a flourish the type of lovemaking and desire that women can truly appreciate". -Romantic Times on 3 Brides for 3 Bad Boys"Monroe's exciting romance is a great read". -Booklist on Ready"Lucy Monroe is one of my favorite writers". -Lora Leigh
I write spicy romance books that end in an HEA. Contemporary romance, historical romance, paranormal romance…I write it all. The two things my books all have in common is lots of emotion and spice. Last year, I fell in love with a new subgenre: mafia romance. Since I write what I love to read, I started a new standalone series, Syndicate Rules where you’ll meet over the top alpha heroes in the Italian and Greek mafias as well as the Irish mob. There are arranged marriages, forced marriages, enemies to lovers, stalkers, forced proximity and lots of mafia intrigue. Morally gray is my new favorite color.
I’ve been published a while and most of my 90+ books have hit the Nielson Bookscan bestseller list, a few ended up on the USA Today bestseller list and some even hit national bestseller lists in the UK and Australia. My books have been translated into numerous languages and are for sale in dozens of countries around the world. I’ve won awards and been published with most of the big houses in New York, but my greatest achievement is touching readers’ hearts. When I hear from a reader who got caught up in one of my books, I know I’m doing what I’m meant to do.
I love writing emotionally deep stories with snappy dialogue and solid plots. I’m more grateful than I’ll ever be able to express that so many readers have taken my stories into their hearts and put my books on their reread and keeper shelves.
Let me just start by saying that I've been a fan of Lucy Monroe since 2004 when I read "The Real Deal". Her ability to pull me into her stories, have me identify with her characters, and rouse feelings of humor and passion have been pretty constant with me. My disappointment in "The Spy Who Wants Me" is probably more than the book warrants just because I have such high expectations from her tales. But this book was just 'off' for me. The humor was just 'that much' too silly, the mystery was just 'that much' too unrealistic, and the two love stories just 'that much' too neat.
Elle is an agent for a super-secret agency that keeps watch on scientific and technological projects for the government. She's also drop-dead gorgeous, deadly, and pretty near a genius. (Hate her yet? Yeah, me too.) Her job requires an extreme level of secrecy and that, combined with her guilt from the death of her husband, has caused a break with her large family. When her newest job sends her back to her family's hometown, she's a bit frazzled. When her liaison at her new job is the very hunky scientist, Beau, she begins to think that just maybe this job won't be a piece of cake. Then she finds out she'll also be working with her brother...and the caca hits the fan!
Beau is a scrumptious piece of manhood. He's also an incredibly intelligent scientist who turned down a career in professional football to heed his conscious and invent things to make the world a better place. He's pretty flexible and can get along with most everyone, except he doesn't like dishonestly and he knows who and what Elle is, and isn't, from the get go. While he may be insanely attracted to her and perfectly willing to have a flaming affair during her 'security consulting job', he can't reconcile himself to the lies. But when Elle's cover is busted and his project is in peril, he joins forces with the bombshell to crack the case...and discovers there's more to Elle than meets the eye.
After having said what I didn't like earlier, I can tell you that this book is very hot. There's not one, but two love stories in this book...and they're both smoking. It's a lighter, easy read with a definite happy ending times two and that's always a bonus. I'll continue to buy Monroe's books and just consider "The Spy Who Wants Me" to be an off-day for this talented author.
Sorry, but it didn't do much for me. The plot issue over the anti-gravity plans seemed to pale into insignificance as various couples got it on. Then the plot came back but it meant that the book lacked pace and urgency. I hadn't read anything else in this series and I understand Elle featured elsewhere. I have to admit - I got a bit tired of being told - she could kill a man with her bare hands - in those words and in others and yet in a way she seemed rather ineffectual in this story. Well, I guess it just wasn't for me. I do like Lucy Monroe. I've read a lot of hers but this one missed the mark for me.
What i loved about this book was the strong heroine. She was the spy who was taking care of everything, setting up stratagies to catch the bad guys & looking good doing it. What i didn't like was the lack of consistency in the storyline.
The lack of a consistent plot line was annoying, but I didn't really expect anything out of the book. And besides the short amount of the story that was focused on the stealing and retrieving of the antigravity plan, it wasn't a bad book. I got through it quickly enough to enjoy it.
If you've not read Lucy Monroe yet, don't start with this one. I highly recommend the Mercenary Trilogy. This one is part of The Goddard Project series, and some characters over lap.
You don't get much background on any of the people. However, I did like the characters, but there just wasn't that much meat to story. It could have been so much better.
This was a random grab off the library shelf...these seem to never turn out well for me. My life was wasted but not dramatically so, so I will concede two stars for this mostly entertaining yet easily forgettable and highly predictable read. I wasn't overly impressed with the plot on this; the pace was rather scattered, writing was too concentrated on useless, background details and the climax was not only super predictable and obvious from early on but practically non-existent in dramatics. I kept waiting to be wrong about the antagonist and have a curve ball thrown at me but was left with disappointment, it went exactly as expected. There were no action scenes, no high speed chases, no high intensity moments it really was rather...blah. The representation that this book was geared for a suspense/action/mystery genre in the blurb was completely misguided. Did anyone hate the main character almost instantly? Brilliant, model-gorgeous and deadly?? It was too cliche for me. It also really bothered me that 'she could kill a man with her bare hands' was thrown out multiple times in the book - yet in all actuality she proved rather unnecessary to the overall plot line as it plays out, not once did the plot ever find her using her particular special skill set. Hero was likable, if a bit unrealistic. Very much your average-Joe-type-romance-book-hero. His arrogance was endearing and I did enjoy his back-and-forth banter with our heroine. Romance element was there and well done for sure, chemistry was well rounded and I enjoyed there were two not just one romance story going on here (about the only thing that WAS going on). Writing style was decent and bearable. I did find the humor to be a bit ill fitting and poorly timed. I do have to mention that I get instantly annoyed when authors use 'brand drops' to emphasize or lend credence to how 'well-off' their characters are. This writer used them CONSTANTLY, the biggest one being the heroines car...which, even not being a car person I know is spelled Spyder, not 'Spider' (I mean a spy drives a SPYder in a spy book...totally dropped that ball), so...huge eye roll multiple times throughout the book going to the writer and the editors who failed to catch that irritating little mishap. Overall; I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone and I don't think I would pick up another by this author. It was just too perfect, too cliche and too predictable to hold my interest. I think it would be much too easy to find something more entertaining which is never a good sign.
I could not get into this book, but I’m one of those people who once I start reading something I have to finish it. I didn’t like how there were so many extra people who didn’t need to be there the friends from out of town all the bosses work college’s. It was all over the place and nothing was answered in the end other then the two romances. Sorry I didn’t like this one at all...
This was a good book. I wouldn't say it was exceptionally well written but it was entertaining. Unfortunately, I'm jumping into the Goddard Project series in book 8 so I was unfamiliar with other characters previously written about in the series and what ties they have outside of being part of the project and as the reader, I felt like it was lacking because I was unfamiliar with it.
For the most part, Elle and Beau were fantastic leads however my biggest beef came mid-way into the book. Elle and Beau had already consummated their relationship and in the process of keeping it casual as agreed on, Elle completely lost all her backbone. She was written as a tough as nails security expert, a woman who could more than take care of herself. All of a sudden she's this weak female shell of herself, unable to turn away from Beau? Didn't jive at all. And Beau was written as a sex fiend that just kept pushing for more in their physical relationship - even though we as viewers were given the context that his feelings were involved, it came out to me as completely dominant and she became subservient. I didn't enjoy that Elle's behaviour changed.
My favorite part however was the inter-relationships shows, especially with Elle's family and more specifically, her brother Matej. Unexpected since I'm usually one who doesn't like it when books veer off course and start introducing a secondary couple to share the spotlight. But it was well-written and really showed off family dynamics in a fun way.
Overall, I'd say a good read but I'd only recommend it if you're familiar with the series.
The new assignment for Elle Gray (Special Agent in the black-ops unit known as ‘The Goddard Project’) was simply to improve security at Environmental Technology Research and Design. Since they had a recent breach in their security, now was the time to get an agent in to see what progress the scientists have had on their different projects. The antigravity project was headed by Dr. Beau Ruston and since the breach was on his project, he was very interested to know what was being done to prevent any further theft. Finding her brother (Matej Chernichinko) working in the facility surprised Elle, now Mat and his girlfriend, Chantal Renaud, seemed to be caught up in the middle of her investigation. Primary goal was the protection of all involved, but with personal feelings involved she is even more determined to get the job done right.
Book 3... Jammed pack full of ultra alpha males and headstrong, independent women. Almost a cliché - Supermodel type spy hooks up with the sexy Texan brainiac all while trying to unravel a mystery. That mystery is a bit mundane, but the graphic nature of the relationships spices things up. Beau is almost too arrogant, Elle is almost too flexible. Some of the characters are difficult to connect with, but very erotic anyways. Now that I have read book 3, I may just go try and find the rest of the 'Goddard Project' books.
This was one hot book The heroine is a super agent that looks like a supermodel but has insecurities that revolves around the death of her husband. She works for one of the government secret companies but her families have no idea what she does. When her recent assignment brings her back to her hometown in over four years, she realizes how much she misses her family and that was enough to make me view her as real despite her perfect image.
The hero was one sexy, funny and arrogant(in a good way) Texan. Beau is the scientist in charge of a new project that is the center of attention and the reason for Belle's visit. The sizzling attraction between them is off the chain but they both loved once and it was taken away. They know that what they share is too explosive to be casual but will they let fear stop them from risking their hearts once more?
The sidelines story is about elle's eldest brother Mat reuniting with his college French lover who os now the victim in this book. Their romance was steamy but also cute. It was great to see Mat transform from a grumpy leader in the lab to a mushy boyfriend.
Good read with an action oriented plot. In some ways it's a typical espionage plot but I enjoyed the fact that heroine was the superspy and the hero was scientist with a project at risk. Alan and 'the old man' from other Goddard Project books have bit parts and Josie and Nitro [from the Mercenary series of Ready, Willing, and Able:] have supporting roles as bodyguards hired by our heroine to guard those at risk in the story. It has some nice touches of humor. [For example: her mom refers to her Lamborghini Spyder as 'that insect car' and the heroine flees the living room after overhearing her oldest brother making love to his girlfriend.] Overall I thought the storyline was more lighthearted than intense. A good read once.
Although there are casual references to characters in other books - order is not hugely important. You could read them in any order.
Goddard Project 1. Satisfaction Guaranteed (2007) 2. Deal With This (2007) 3. The Spy Who Wants Me (2009) 4. Watch over Me (2009)
This was not Lucy Monroe's best work and I usually love her books. I was disappointed and hope the next one is back to her usually standards.
1: Everything was too pat - too perfect. 2: There was no mystery and no adventure. 3: Elle and Beau have chemistry. We the reader are told this. Problem we do not feel that chemistry. We want to but it is just not there. I did like that both had brains. Smart is sexy, dumb is not. 4: If Mat regretted his treatment of Chantal ten years before to the point that he thought of her constantly, why had he never looked for her? Then they accidently work at the same place and they are hot and heavy from day one??? 5: After Mat underhanded and bad treatment of her ten years ago, Chantal immediately falls into his arms and beds and forgives him. NO WAY! 6: Not a hot sexy story. No real heat. 7: Predictable even more than most romance books.
Save for a beach read when the heat of the sun makes up for the lack of heat in the book.
I was very disappointed in this book. I loved Monroe's other books in her TGP series, but this one was more like a Harlequin romance. It was way too cutesy for my taste. The characters weren't strong. Beau and his Texas accent was way over the top. If Elle Gray was truly an agent, she is a very unprofessional one. I just felt like the author had signed a contract that specified that the first kiss was to take place on page XX and the sex would take place on page XX. Give me some suspense and surprise. This book was way too predictable. There was not one alpha character in the book if that is what you are looking for in a read. I was very disappointed in Lucy Monroe. I have never had one of Monroe's books take me three months to read and I had to force myself to finish it. Sorry, I like Monroe's other books.
This book had its moments but was not one of the better blends of action/adventure, espionage, and romance that I have read. I felt the lead male, a Texan, was a contradiction and I didn't think the heroine lived up to the description on the back cover "looks like a supermodel, thinks like a super agent and can kill a man with her bare hands"). I also thought that the subplot involving the heroine's brother was really rushed and not believable.
Still, this is a quick and easy read and is good escape material if that's what you're in the mood for.
The Goddard Project (TGP) has a new assignment. Someone is trying to steal Environmental Technology Research and Design (ETRD)'s plans for their anti-gravity project and they need help with catching the thieves before that happens. TGP sends agent Elle Gray in under the cover of helping with their security control. Elle is one beautiful agent, tall and self confident She also has the training necessary to fulfill both jobs. Enter Dr. Beau Ruston, the ETRD's project director, a former pro football star and as handsome as she is beautiful. Chemistry is not just found in the lab.
I loved this book. I liked seeing a girl as the main character who could hold her own against any of the male characters. Elle was a great strong female lead that had you rooting for her not thinking you could never live up to those standards. Thanks again for a great story and for great intelligent characters.
really love this series and this was really good. The romance part of the story was really hot, but the story didn't take a back seat as it has in some of the other books of this series. Can't wait to read the next onE!
I have read a lot of books by Lucy Monroe but this one didn't wow me or pull me into the story. I am a little disappointed with this one, I felt that the main H/h were to perfect for me and the plot just felt fake. I didn't feel the tension, it didn't engage me at all.
