Vaughan W. Smith is a fiction writer from Sydney, Australia, who explores big life questions through story. His favourite genres are Fantasy, Mystery, Science Fiction and Thrillers.
This is the third part of the series, and at least cursory familiarity with the events of previous books is recommended... If you got that far in the series, you either have no taste in literature whatsoever or you are a glutton for punishment raging at the pages your crippling sunken cost fallacy and completionist mindset shackled you to.
Compared to the first two books in the series writing got noticeably better especially in the areas of tension building, descriptions of the scenery and foreshadowing execution. At least for the first half of the book, because things kind of went downhill after reaching *the location*. There, we learn that the special little boy is even more "specialer" perhaps even "specialest boy ever" and old enemies return to have a long chat full of plot exposition in the middle of the fight.
The writing issues - glaring in the previous books - are still present, though somewhat muted, as writing gets better. There are however: - questionable motivations of the supporting characters, acting more in the interest of plot convenience, than any recognizable interest of their own - dragging on and stiff dialogue taking place in the middle of a supposedly dramatic and time sensitive battle (it seems the main character forgot that he was supposed to be focusing on something rather important, that other people died to buy his time for, and instead engaged the villain in rambling pointless conversations) - secrets are being kept, that make no sense other than eliciting emotional reaction from the reader by their dramatic reveal (instead a reader is confused by the sheer stupidity of the supporting character, and the fact that the information was never brought up even though the trip to the location in question took weeks)
Overall - below average fantasy story. Not worth your time, unless you are stuck. Trajectory of developing writing skill is promising, gives hope that at least one book in the cycle would be decent by the time it ends.
The issues with the other books are reducing somewhat in this book. It feels like there is some strange decision-making, but the overall plot is progressing and steps are constantly being made. The plot is mostly there, but the hidden wizard is still a strange mystery.
Gr8 Just keeps getting better has our characters become more developed! Recommende that u begin with the first book, though, not really stand alone books.
