Considering it had been a while since I listened to the podcast, I did re-listen to a couple episodes for some of the short stories, (I think the book covers up to Interlude 6), however you don't have to! This is an immersive short story collection that gives more insight into side characters and the town of Melancholy Falls!
Heimbuch delivers these short stories in various ways which build on the world of Return Home in a very interesting way. From speeches, first/third person narratives, poetry, transcripts, excerpts, etc. you see the world of Melancholy Falls from a different perspective!
With each story your automatically immersed into a new character or setting of the world!
Because these stories are more character-driven and are very quick-paced, within the ones focusing on characters, the setting and world-building is a bit minimal.
What I really enjoyed about Interludes was that even though Jonathan, Ami, & Buddy were mentioned from time to time (& Jonathan + Buddy were in one very short story--4: The Day After), it was great to get more background and backstory on just the characters and places we maybe aren't too familiar with from Return Home!
I also loved that some stories built up to episodes from the podcast or developed on the ending of episodes! It really added more depth to the podcast and I was definitely invested in learning more about the town and these characters!
Some of the short stories that I really loved include: - "Big Joan" Which centers around Big Joan, the owner of Big Joan's diner and what led to her running it! - "Here Comes..." which focuses on how The Raggity Man came to be! & -A Melancholy Falls legend of The Woman At The Falls + The Melancholy Falls Visitor Guide!
Interludes From Melancholy Falls Vol. 1 is a must read for fans of the Return Home podcast, looking to get more info on the interesting characters and places of Melancholy Falls, NJ!
If you're a fan of Return Home this is mandatory. A fun jaunt around the world with a consistent voice you've come to know and love. Even better, the voice is strong. This is a fun journey & an easy read. Great job, Jeff!
This was definitely an interlude. I knew these 16 stories would not be about the main characters in the podcast I was hoping for a bit more connection to the stories of Return Home that I know and love. There were a few good stories but more often than not I was disappointed.
This podcast is the only podcast that I have listened to all the way through twice! So, when I heard there was a book, I had to read it. The writing style is excellent. It’s all of the wacky and funny things that I have come to expect from this series. I particularly enjoyed reading about “the never was.” I am not a skilled enough writer to do it justice here. If you are a fan of the podcast, pick it up. You won’t regret it.
I like the stories! However, you can feel (and see, e.g. through typos and spelling mistakes) that this writing is still quite... Young? (I don't want to say amateuristic, but that's the most appropriate description, I think.) However, again, the stories were a lot of fun!
