«Fundamentos de filosofía» (1927) era una obra pensada para el gran público estadounidense que, sin embargo, despertó una aguerrida controversia en los círculos académicos. Su tesis clave afirma que la humanidad es el instrumento mediante el cual adquirimos nuestro conocimiento del universo (o, según Gorgias, «el hombre es la medida de todas las cosas»). De ahí, surgen varias cuestiones: ¿de qué maneras adquiere conocimiento el ser humano?, ¿es posible la formulación de leyes universales?, ¿cómo podemos distinguir verdad y opinión? Bertrand Arthur William Russell, 3rd Earl Russell, OM, FRS, was a Welsh philosopher, historian, logician, mathematician, advocate for social reform, pacifist, and prominent rationalist. Although he was usually regarded as English, as he spent the majority of his life in England, he was born in Wales, where he also died.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950 "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought."

While reading this book an old joke about philosophy made me laugh.

A dean asks the head of a physics department to see him.
"Why are you using so many resources? All those labs and experiments and whatnot, this is getting expensive! Why can't you be more like mathematicians - they only need pens, paper, and a trash bin. Or philosophers! They only need pens and paper :P

When the role of science is to find what is Truth and Real, the philosophy just provides various options about how to see things. The thoughts may work in a scientific or non-scientific way. And, in the whole book Mr. Russel tried to convince that philosophy only makes sense when it only sees things in a scientific way.

It's interesting that he rejects the idea of solipsism and other so-called belief which are claimed to be true for those who believe ( because they need no scientific evidence to believe :P ) but have no scientific ground to prove in reality.
"I once received a letter from a philosopher who professed to be a solipsist, but was surprised that there were no others!Yet this philosopher was by way of believing that no one else existed.This shows that solipsism is not really believed even by those who think they are convinced of its truth"-
This is how Mr. Russel ditched solipsism.

Since the book was written in 1927, a lot of scientific discoveries are missing from Mr. Russel but the core ideas about how science works are still same.

Russell is a joy to read, and along with Popper my favourite writer in philosophy. He always writes accessibly, but this volume is a little unusual in being directed at a lay audience. The book was written explicitly for the American market of the 1920s, and is thus pitched at perhaps a more challenging level than might be attempted today, but will still be light review material for a student of philosophy. It is ferociously non-mathematical.

Russell possesses a delightfully wry wit, reminiscent of Hume, which eases the way. One is startled to learn that Kant was a misfortune - as one reviewer says in the introduction, an epithet more properly reserved for Hegel. The author is apparently a "plain man"! Spinoza's greatness is ethical rather than metaphysical, and "accordingly" his contemporaries treated him as a profound metaphysician but maximally wicked man. Little gems like this pepper the text.

The book is divided into four main sections dealing with the external and perceptual world of the mind, the physical world and causality, the inner world of the mind and the Universe and man's place in it. Russell's philosophy can probably best be described as pragmatic positivism: He rejects solipsism, idealism, naive materialism and all such monomanias. He espouses neutral monism - the view that mind and matter are manifestations of one reality, a view that has weathered the decades well. His physics is now a bit out of date, but not in ways fatal to his constructs. He admits that solipsism and other such constructs are logically unassailable, but chooses not to accept them - the idea of a real, phenomenal Universe is not logically necessary but logically consistent and basically sensible.

This is basically a sensible man, and a sensible book. Very well worth reading as a first introduction to philosophy, perhaps accompanied by his History of Western Philosophy.

The British edition of this book is "An outline of philosophy," but this American edition is simply titled "Philosophy." The four parts of this book cover "man from without," "the physical world," "man from within," and "the universe."

I quite liked this one. Russell's arguments concerning perception really struck a chord. So did his arguments and thoughtful investigations into other matters, and non-matters even. Written in the dawn of the QFT era, a heady time when models of the natural world were changing every year, this book is curiously not that quaint or dated, though the science has come a long way since.

Well-structured and with plenty of food for thought, this is a must-read for anyone who likes Russell or is 'getting into philosophy', without wanting to dive right into a serious primary text. The writing is excellent and clear which makes it less of a daunting read than it seems at first. Still, it took me some time to finish—time that was certainly not wasted.

If pragmatism can be seen as growing out of utilitarianism, and if the physical or chemical cause of anxiety that lies as the root cause of existentialism is taken into account for the prevalence of this philosophical viewpoint in the latter half of the 20th century and, moreover, if behaviorism to be disregarded because it is fundamentally rooted in subjectivity, then what viewpoint is leftover for a thinking person to take?

According to Bertrand Russell's view, if the history of philosophy resembles nothing less than the quest for an intersubjective perspective that will allow political consequences of a multiplicity of world-historical data-points to develop and thrive, then how are we to preserve the God in a relativistic world, where all substances may be traced to an outmoded fantasm?

The statement you present is a highly abstract premise blending historical philosophy, political theory, and theological concerns. It poses a profound challenge: If philosophical history is fundamentally a search for a universally shared (intersubjective) framework for political action, and we now live in a relativistic world where traditional, fixed "substances" (like a fixed concept of God) are viewed as outdated fantasies, how can a concept of God be preserved?

Creating Meaning Without a Divine Anchor: Figures like Jean-Paul Sartre argued that existence precedes essence, meaning humans are radically free and must create their own values in a godless universe. The "God" is preserved only as a memory of a vanished foundation, and human responsibility takes center stage.

Valuing the Fantasm: A radical postmodern response might embrace the idea that "all substances may be traced to an outmoded fantasm." Instead of trying to "preserve" a foundational God, this view argues that we must navigate the world by acknowledging that all grounding narratives are constructed fictions (phantasms). The task is not preservation, but critical engagement with which fictions allow for the most ethical and thriving political consequences.

In summary, the preservation of "God" in such a philosophical landscape generally involves a profound shift from viewing God as an objective substance to seeing God as a symbol, an ethical ideal, or an intersubjective value necessary for grounding human meaning and political life.

Another book that was lying with me unread for 25 years. Never could make it beyond three chapters. Had it not been for the purple patch of reading that I have struck recently, I would have abandoned the book much early in the game this time too.

Nonetheless, reading An Outline of Philosophy was an uphill task. It slowed me down. It felt as if I had never read anything. A fiction novel with that page count would be a 3-day affair. I fancied what it would be like to punch much above my weight.

Reading a sentence over and over and then reading the paragraph over and over, carefully holding up a bunch of ideas in my immediate attention long enough for them to make sense so much so that a sneeze or a brisk movement could dissipate away sense, feeling anxious whether I would be able to follow Russell any further before my nerves give way—that was my experience with this book. After finishing a chapter, instead of getting caught up in self-congratulatory emotions, I began mustering courage to proceed to the next chapter.

Because philosophy is interesting, we assume, it must be also simple. No, it's not, at least, academic philosophy is not. People equate their simple unexamined beliefs with philosophy. Beliefs that cannot rise to the strength of statements and cannot be validated cannot pass for philosophy. People even call their religious views as philosophy. Religious philosophy is an oxymoron (unless it means philosophy of religion). What the religious called philosophy is actually dogma that's not very difficult to understand, although when you don't appreciate it, they say that you have not understood it. One can read this book and then decide for himself whether one has any real interest in philosophy or philosophical thinking. Quantum mechanics sounds interesting but can only be committed to one's understanding through a lot of physics and mathematics. Philosophy demands a similar, perhaps more analytical, rigour.

I think, Russell was trying to communicate clearly to the extent that's possible when talking about subjects such as perception, language, knowledge, image and memory, space-time, belief, introspection, inference, induction, emotion, truth, matter vs. event. He compresses each of these topics into its respective chapter covering enough ground to make his excursions ahead intelligible. In writing the book, he had committed himself to a certain level of ease with his publisher—difficulty or ease being the function of reader's preparedness.

The book was published when neutrons weren't yet discovered. It was published in 1927. Except for the chapter on the structure of atom and I believe some bits of the chapter on relativity, all other chapters are still relevant. He explains how physics, physiology and psychology come together to give us the knowledge of the world. The reality of the world as far as our perceptual knowledge is concerned is neither materialism nor mentalism but a neutral monism of which matter and mind are states. I may not be putting it correctly. However, I want to convey that Russell, although an atheist, is not a dogged materialist. He is open to new ideas and new ways of thinking as long as they do not subvert the established structures of knowledge by making unverifiable claims.

I wanted to give the book a 3-star rating as I had just recovered from the debilitating challenges of keeping up with it. Now that I have waded past the sludge, I look back on it as testing philosophical waters; experiencing what it means to rake one's brains. I am still in disbelief that all that learning and incisive logic, all that perspicacity and range lodged for a time in my tiny head. Alas, such mental attainments have a very short half-life.

Four stars for the book. Yes, one star less for making it so difficult for me. I will never forget the intellectual humiliation that the book brought me. Also, it was more of a commentary on the field of human knowledge and, therefore it felt, Russell wasn't going anywhere with all those ideas. If I read it again and find it a smooth sailing, I would attribute the current difficulties to my ill-health during this period.

No lo he terminado ya que tiene 400 paginas y aqui en la app dice 305, pero me queda poco. He de decir que para estar escrito en 1930 Russell estaba acertado en muchos conceptos de filosofia que a dia de hoy aún son validos y empezaba a definir otros que aun se discuten. Lo he disfrutado muchisimo a pesar de su dificultad en muchas secciones.

Además de las grandes guerras y crisis económicas que tomaron lugar en el siglo XX, también el mundo se moldeó por dos grandes teorías, la de la relatividad y la existencialista. La Física y la Filosofía siempre han tenido una relación abstrusa; aparentemente, una puede llegar a depender de la otra en mayor o menor medida, sin embargo, ambas confluyen en ahondar más allá del bien y el mal y hacerle ver al hombre que la base de sus cuestionamientos nunca será absolutamente correcta.

La inexistencia de la materia cambió todos los esquemas del pensamiento tradicional a tal grado que la mente del ser humano y la importancia de sus percepciones empezaron a tomar mayor relevancia. A grandes rasgos, la teoría de la relatividad de Einstein define la materia como una serie de sucesos que toma lugar en el espacio-tiempo, por lo que la materia pierde su «solidez» e «inmutabilidad», ya que el tiempo representa una fluctuación de las energías y la expansión de lo que percibimos como materia; además de que hay una variedad de factores que afectan el canal de percepción entre el cerebro y la aparente «realidad externa», dando a entender que lo que vemos está en función de nuestra percepción cerebral, mas no es lo que «es». Al mismo tiempo, Albert Camus y el movimiento absurdista mencionan que la existencia de un objeto se define en razón de nuestra interpretación, mas «es» sin necesidad de esta; como ejemplo, podríamos decir que desde que se observa una piedra, se le atribuyen características (peso, color, consistencia, etc.) y se le asigna el nombre de «piedra», por lo que la piedra existe únicamente en la medida en la que yo le doy un sentido a su subsistir, mas «es» sin necesidad de este, sería absurdo preguntarse qué «es» la piedra si ya no existe. Por ende, ambas teorías confluyen en que la existencia de lo que nosotros entrevemos como «realidad» es parcial y no podemos dilucidar lo que «es». Al visualizar esto, podríamos pensar que lo que llamamos «Universo», es lo que «es» al poseer una sola característica y puede que represente lo que llamamos el «todo».

Es un libro que plantea hipótesis bastante complejas, ya que su autor aborda diversos cuestionamientos a través de un espectro científico y los tecnicismos pueden resultar confusos, sin embargo, el contenido le hace justicia y podemos apreciar con una mejor perspectiva el impacto de la revolución tecnológica de ese periodo y cómo sigue repercutiendo en nuestra actualidad.

"Un individuo no es mejor filósofo porque conozca mayor número de hechos científicos; si es la filosofía lo que lo interesa, serán los principios, los métodos y las concepciones generales lo que aprenderá de la ciencia".

Uno de los cuestionamientos base que siempre debemos tener en cuenta es nuestra noción acerca de la «realidad», por ejemplo, cuando vemos una silla ¿está realmente allí? La física diría que lo que representa la silla es una suma de electrones y protones que entrevemos como manchas de colores. El físico supone que la sensación de "observar una silla" es una cadena causal entre la realidad exterior y la percepción cerebral que conforman a su vez nuestra observación, por lo que esto afirma que la realidad incognoscible es una problema de lógica.

"Si la silla ha de subsistir independientemente de que la veamos o no, entonces debe ser algo distinto de la mancha de color que vemos, pues esta depende de condiciones extrañas a la silla, tales, por ejemplo, como el modo en que recibe la luz, el color de los lentes que usemos u demás causas por el estilo".

Lo que hará que percibamos nuestra noción de realidad en el espacio y tiempo serán nuestras inferencias fisiológicas, atribuyéndole características a las cosas a través de nuestros sentidos. Por ejemplo, la sal y el azúcar son pequeñas y blancas, sin embargo, una inducción hará que perciba la diferencia entre ambas.

PARTE I: El hombre visto desde afuera.

"Se tuvo al cuerpo por aquella parte de nosotros observable para los demás, y se consideró el alma como parte que es privativa de cada una de nosotros".

La filosofía tradicional de dualización tuvo auge desde que Platón dividió al hombre en cuerpo y alma hasta Hegel, quien afirmaba que la separación reside entre la percepción y lo que "es" fenomenológicamente. Desde su punto de vista, el cuerpo representa una realidad corrompible y el alma una realidad estática. No obstante, tratar de explicar cualquier tipo de "realidad objetiva" es como afirmar la existencia de un poder místico que controle nuestro destino, ya que no hemos llegado a entender que sucede en el canal que une al ojo con el aparente objeto externo, y evidentemente tampoco podemos entender que existe fuera de nuestra percepción cerebral.

¿Qué moldea esa percepción cerebral? Hay tres características que se derivan de la denominación "poder mental" y que nos hablan de la consciencia: la memoria, el aprendizaje y el conocimiento. El Dr. Watson, líder de la corriente psicológica del Behaviorismo, explica estas tres variables como consecuencias del acto reflejo, explicándolos como un conjunto de relaciones entre estímulos y respuestas. No obstante, el problema de esta corriente es asegurar que es una realidad objetiva la mentalidad del hombre, ya que se puede medir a través de los supuestos "actos reflejos".

Ahora bien, hablando de la constitución de las palabras, el lenguaje es un proceso al que le es esencial el orden temporal y está proscrito por un orden espacial. Por lo mismo, hemos venido mencionando últimamente que la palabra "es" es lo más ambiguo para describir algo aparentemente "real", por lo que la palabra "conocer" describe la parcialidad de la percepción al darle un sentido a una situación, sin que este lo necesite.

"El conocimiento existe solamente en relación con la satisfacción de un deseo o en la capacidad de elegir el medio apropiado para alcanzar los fines que nos proponemos".

PARTE II: El mundo físico.

"Lo que la física nos dice acerca de la materia y del mundo físico en general, considerado desde el punto de vista filosófico, puede ponerse bajo dos encabezamientos principales: la estructura del átomo y la teoría de la relatividad".

Llegamos a la piedra angular de este ensayo, la mutabilidad del átomo y la destrucción del concepto de «materia» como sólido. Primeramente, se descubre que la radioactividad altera el elemento de isótopo y convierte al electrón en algo que irradia energía, por lo que, lo que es ya no es materia conformada por moléculas, sino emanaciones de energía, y no se tiene una idea concisa acerca de qué es esa luz.

La segunda teoría y la más relevante, la de la relatividad, abole el tiempo cósmico y el espacio persistente para darle paso al concepto espacio-tiempo, lo que conlleva un espacio-tiempo es llamado "suceso". Por lo que, lo que antes se creía como sustancia, ahora es una serie de acontecimientos y sucesos, no una cuestión temporal o espacial. Uno de los problemas es que no podemos percibir el movimiento separado de algo que se mueva.

¿Por qué nuestras percepciones son únicamente «nuestras»? Desde los llamados estímulos corporales -como el dolor de una muela-, que únicamente yo los puedo definir, parece ser que existe una red de conexiones neuronales que le dan forma a la percepción en sí, sin embargo, puede ser que existe una percepción colectiva, aunque sus partes parezcan ser diferentes, por lo que todos podríamos ser todo de forma continua.

"Nuestro conocimiento del mundo físico, por lo tanto, debe estar contenido en nuestra reacción ante el estímulo que llega a nosotros a través del ambiente intermedio; y apenas se parece posible que nuestra reacción tenga una relación más íntima con el objeto de la que tiene el estímulo. Así, puesto que el estímulo difiera para los diferentes observadores, también difiere la reacción; en consecuencia, en todas nuestras percepciones de los procesos físicos existe un elemento de subjetividad".

La subjetividad de la realidad externa, con base en la definición y la capacidad de razonamiento de la realidad interna, conlleva el hecho de lo que llamamos aparentemente "objetivo", sea en medida de cada realidad, por lo que, la objetividad lleva en sí misma a la subjetividad; cuando cambiamos de una realidad a otra, es decir, de la visual a la visual-atómica, diremos que la mesa es "mesa" en la primera y en la siguiente, que la mesa es una serie de choques entre protones y electrones, ergo, no podemos expresar la palabra "ser", es paradójico, ya que al ser, no es, sino sólo en un sentido visual y en otro visual-atómico, en pocas palabras, el lenguaje acota al hecho y es la derivación del antro-morfismo y la percepción espacio-tiempo.

"Al ver ciertas manchas o figuras de color diferentemente situadas en el espacio visual, decimos que vemos las cosas fuera del cuerpo. Es decir, que al ver ciertas manchas o figuras de color diferentemente situadas en el espacio visual, decimos que vemos las cosas fuera del cuerpo. Pero, desde el punto de vista de la física, todo cuanto uno ve debe considerarse como interior al cuerpo: lo que suceda en cualquier otra parte sólo puede inferirse".

Si no sabemos nada acerca de las cualidades intrínsecas de los fenómenos físicos a menos que sean sensaciones, ¿Cómo podemos definir uno? Quizás el fenómeno sea simplemente una sensación y no algo más.

"Donde no hay ni ojos, ni oídos, ni cerebro, no existen ni colores, ni sonidos; pero existen, sin embargo, sucesos que poseen ciertas características conducentes a la producción de colores y sonidos allí donde se encuentran los ojos, los oídos y los cerebros".

Antes de continuar con la tercera parte, hay que aclarar algunos puntos acerca de la teoría de la relatividad. Cuando los físicos tratan de ver qué está sucediendo más allá de los protones y electrones, se dan cuenta que este conjunto de ondas luminosas (o energía) representan una serie de sucesos que persisten en el espacio-tiempo dependiendo de la relación con la perspectiva del observador. Lo que denominamos "materia" está en función del tiempo, no de sí misma; la estabilidad de la materia presupone la presencia de una poderosa energía subyacente que la mantiene en este estado. En realidad, nosotros percibimos la materia como algo sólido porque las vibraciones de la energía son tan rápidas que no alcanzamos a percibirlas con los sentidos corporales.

PARTE III: El hombre por dentro.

"Sería teóricamente posible estimular el nervio óptico artificialmente de la misma manera que lo estimula la luz de la luna que llega hasta él; en tal caso tendríamos la misma experiencia de cuando "vemos la luna", pero nos engañaríamos en cuanto a su causa externa".

¿Qué significa la palabra "mental"? ¿Será el hecho de conocer o el de querer? ¿O el hecho de sentir? Dentro de lo que conocemos, funcionan procesos cognitivos que conforman: la percepción, memoria, concepción y creencia.

"La mesa, por sí misma, como un objeto físico, no puede considerarse como el objeto de nuestra percepción si el objeto es algo esencial a la existencia de la percepción".

Con esto se puede afirmar que la consciencia o mente perceptual no es en sí misma, ya que está en el mismo plan que los objetos relacionados. Por otro lado, cuando hablamos de querer algo, es decir el "deseo", las glándulas suprarrenales se estimulan por la percepción de un objeto capaz de infundir miedo o ira.

PARTE IV: El universo.

"El hombre en sí mismo no es el verdadero asunto de la filosofía. Lo que a esta importa es el conjunto del Universo; el hombre demanda consideración solamente como instrumento mediante el cual adquirimos conocimiento del Universo".

Los padres de la filosofía moderna, Descartes y Spinoza, trataban de emparentar a la física con la filosofía para que unan fuerzas, sin embargo y durante mucho tiempo se siguió creyendo en la materia como una unidad indestructible. Sorpresivamente, Leibniz fue el primero en cuestionarse la existencia de la materia. Después, la ley de la "conservación de los momentos" aparentemente afirmó que la materia existe por sí misma y libre de influencias exteriores, lo que hizo que Locke, Hume y Berkeley se enfocaran en la cuestión empírica en su totalidad. Kant fue el primero en visualizar la idea "espacio-tiempo" y de ahí al presente se ha cuestionado continuamente si en verdad la realidad objetiva no existe por sí misma.

Volviendo al punto de la inexistencia de la materia, hay ocasiones donde el protón y el electrón se tocan y aniquilan al instante, pero eso sucede únicamente en las estrellas donde pueden desarrollarse explosiones a gran escala.

"La percepción nos proporciona el conocimiento más concreto que poseemos respecto a los materiales del mundo físico; pero lo que percibimos es parte de los materiales de nuestro propio cerebro, y no de las mesas y las sillas, el sol, la luna y las estrellas".

Entonces, si mi existencia no es absoluta porque no puedo explicar con certeza lo que constituye mi percepción cerebral y mi materia realmente no es "materia" sino una serie de sucesos en el espacio-tiempo. ¿Existo en función de algo, mas no existo por mí mismo? Yo respondería que sí, nuestra existencia no es absoluta, mas no por eso significa que sea falsa, al final, no es tarea de la filosofía responder todas las dudas sino únicamente planteárselas, ya que lo importante no es llegar a la cima, sino experimentar el camino.

I felt that this book was not written in the first place for the noobs like me; most of the things discussed, requires a background in philosophy, if one wants to comprehend it completely. Estamos frente a un libro que nos pone a pensar bastante sobre la relación que tenemos con lo que llamamos "universo y sus objetos" y como nos relacionamos con ellos a través del conocimiento inferido.
Inicialmente puede ser un poco densas las temáticas del libro, pero la manera como Russell acompaña los conceptos con ejemplos de la vida cotidiana hace que sean bastante comprensibles las ideas que nos expone. El libro examina inicialmente la manera en la que el hombre percibe y conoce el mundo que lo rodea, pasando por algunas teorías como las de los behavoristas y resalta las limitaciones de nuestra percepción. Luego analiza de qué manera se construye lo que se conoce como "conocimiento" contrastando diferentes teorías que tratan de dar explicación a dicho fenómeno, además, en su parte final Russell tratara de introducirnos en la discusión de la relación del ser humano con el universo partiendo de el análisis de la división histórica de cuerpo y mente.
En general es un buen libro para aquellas personas que sean curiosas y quieran iniciarse en la filosofía desde su relación con la física moderna.

One of the great pleasures in reading Bertrand Russell for me was when he discusses the role of philosophy in a society where science has been the approach to finding out what is real and true in our universe. As science plays a greater role in our lives, there seems to be less space for philosophy. The other was when Russell plainly says that he doesn't understand Kant. As someone who openly praises science over philosophy, I take a certain joy in this. However, it should be understood that science is good at answering the small questions in life, not the large ones. Sometimes it's good to step back and see exactly what the larger picture is of the small questions science has been answering. And that's where Russell's Outline of Philosophy comes in.

Although much has changed since this book was written in 1927, some of the philosophical questions Russell examines are still worthwhile considering given what we've learnt about the world around us. Philosophy becomes important when we realize that when we ask a really precise question, we come to uncertainty of some kind, and so we depend on larger 'philosophical' to make sense of our world sometimes. How does an eye work is easier than asking how a certain wavelength causes a certain cell in the retina to send a signal to the brain.

Outline of Philosophy is broken down into question relating to, among other things, man (sic) and his environment (and his focus on manipulating the earth into making more human beings), the process of learning (how he is able to labor in the present for reward in the future, and focus on behavior that maximizes the amount of offspring), language what words can mean, how it relates to physics and relativity (how do we know that's really there and how can two people experience something the exact same way?) and how can we describe and properly study events that happen internally and privately (like a headache). Though some of these questions are more interesting than others, on the whole the topics are discussed by Russell in a very interesting fashion.

And although I thought this book would serve as an appetizer for Russell's History of Western Philosophy, the truth is that Outline of Philosophy is no supplement but stands on its own.

The Outline of Philosophy was my first venture into the realm of philosophy. I took up the book as an introduction into this world with which I am completely unfamiliar, absolutely unalarmed (owing to the rather welcoming title), expecting a breezy and unimpeded read of, well, the outlines of philosophy.

A majority of the book was spent re-reading over and over, taking in incrementally what Russell (hopefully) meant. Thankfully, I could make sense of and relate to most of the book, albeit completely making sense of what Russell intended to convey did not come easy; I will not attempt to fool myself and maintain that I did not brush over concepts which were, in the end, to tedious to grasp. To that end, maybe this is the level of attention philosophy and its intracies warrant.

Russell's narration on notions such as ethics, the atom and particularly relativity was wonderfully insightful; it was a welcome refresher course (despite my admitted hate for the Chemistry) with a lovely historical run-through.


Perhaps it is owing to my naivety, or my literary incompetence (for which I thoroughly apologize) due to which I have not been able to enjoy this book to the unfettered extent I had hoped; it was nonetheless, an enlightening read. I do hope to come back to this book one day, and pick it up rather prepared.

One of the short work of Russel targetting mainly general reader. Here Russel tried to bring the connection of philosophy, psychology, science, especially in his days.

To construct a comprehensive view on the subject like philosophy one needs to scrutinize the capacity to which extend one can explore by which method. That is what the book strived to do.
It was very much engrossed in the process how we know something when we say we know from the context of science, philosophy, psychology.

But Russel seemed to lost in the arguments, sometimes unnecessarily elaborated some topic which is obvious. Had a tough time reading Russel's long sentences.

In 1927, a publisher Russell says he would pay $ 5,000 if he wrote a 100,000-word philosophical book. Russell accepts the offer and writes a book in 3 months. Human beings are questioned at the level of atomic structure, from the outside, from inside to the physical world, with the discoveries of time. While it is interesting that the atomic structure and electron movements are studied and interpreted philosophically at the level of Bohr atomic theorists, those who read Russell's other books are going to recapture in some parts.
