This certainly reminded me a bit of the Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark books, which is why I picked up volumes 1 and 2 in the first place. Most stories were genuinely spooky and well written, but as with any sort of short story collection, some of the stories did not impress me and now I know which horror tropes I personally don't care for, werewolves being the primary trope I don't like.

As such, it is close to impossible for me to give this collection a full five stars. Let's see how Volume 2 fares...

This book is quite an homage to the Scary Stories to tell in the dark series. Although a little more kid-friendly.

Just ok. Some stories were good, some were just mediocre. Some felt derivative. The stories are short enough to breeze through, but that's also a detriment as I actually wanted a little more from some of them. They remind me of short, quickly written horror stories that people post in online forums.

Very derivative. The stories contain almost exclusively unoriginal ideas and weren't very engaging at that.

When I was a kid, my favorite books were the Goosebumps series and the Scary Stores to Tell in the Dark books. I would check out the Scary Stores books whenever I saw that they were available at my school's library - which wasn't all that frequently. Even though I hadn't read the books in a couple of decades, a lot of the stories were still fresh in my mind. It was rare that I would randomly think about them, but if I thought of the Scary Story books, some of the stories and pictures could easily be recalled.

The Nightmare Society books are marketed towards my generation and fans of the Scary Stories books, and is exactly why I decided to read the first book. They did their best to emulate the look and feel of the Scary Story books, but all of the stories and the pictures are just not that memorable. Trying to recall any of the stories that I read (other than the couple that I read last night) is impossible. The same thing goes for the pictures, I can't recall any of them, there's no lasting impression.

The stories were fine and mildly entertaining, but mostly this collection falls a little flat, especially when compared with the Scary Stories books. It is a very quick read, and perhaps the book would have been better if the stories were longer and had more meat on them. There wasn't anything I disliked about the stories in this book, just that they weren't interesting/unique enough for me to remember them. There is little to no chance that I will continue reading the Nightmare Society books.

I’ve been making my way through both the Nightmare Soup and Nightmare Society collections, and while Nightmare Soup really scratched that nostalgic itch — coming eerily close to the vibe of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark — I regret to say that Nightmare Society Volume I didn’t do much for me.

I get that it’s recommended for readers 14 and up, but even keeping that in mind, many of these stories felt flat. Some had promise, a few were okay, and more than a few were just plain boring. Where Scary Stories managed to send a chill down your spine with a whisper, this one barely raised a goosebump. And to be honest a lot of these stories felt disconnected and jumped around a lot, I had to reread quite a few because I felt some of them made no sense.

I’ll still finish the collection in good faith, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed.

Edit: Just because it’s aimed at younger readers doesn’t mean it has to be dull. Preteens crave real chills and clever twists too — they’re far more capable (and creep-loving) than this collection gives them credit for.

This book was a letdown quite frankly. Nightmare Soup Tales had better quality stories and more creative, while the ones in here felt unoriginal and bland.

Alex Olson's stories in here we plain bad a lot of time, because they all felt like uncompleted ideas. There's some about a vampire scared to get moonburned??? at a gas station???? One about a strange homeless man who mumbles about beaches, and a house that may have more than meets the eye. All disappointing and random.

I'm 4-5 stories into Nightmare Society 2 and its off to a better start, so look forward to that.

A decent little book of spooks, but many of the stories rely too heavily on references to other works of horror for it to feel original.

A few gems

Most of the writing is mediocre and the plots aren’t very complex or immersive but there are a few gems in here worth the read

Great for 9-10 year olds

My daughter loved reading some of these. Told me how "not scary" they were, but could only get through one or two at a time. 🤔
