KELLY THOMPSON has a degree in Sequential Art from The Savannah College of Art & Design. Her love of comics and superheroes have compelled her since she first discovered them as a teenager. Currently living in Portland, Oregon with her boyfriend and the two brilliant cats that run their lives, you can find Kelly all over the Internet where she is generally well liked, except where she's detested.
Kelly has published two novels - THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING (2012) and STORYKILLER (2014) and the graphic novel HEART IN A BOX from Dark Horse Comics (2015). She's currently writing ROGUE & GAMBIT, HAWKEYE, and PHASMA for Marvel Comics and GHOSTBUSTERS for IDW. Other major credits include: A-Force, Captain Marvel & The Carol Corps, Jem and The Holograms, Misfits, Power Rangers Pink, and the creator-owned mini-series Mega Princess.
Kelly's ambitions are eclipsed only by her desire to exist entirely in pajamas. Fortunately pajamas and writers go hand in hand (most of the time). Please buy all her stuff so that she can buy (and wear) more pajamas.
Not a bad first issue but the last page/ending was so abrupt that it but a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. Too much of a cheesey romcom trope. But I'm still looking forward to the next issue, just this one kinda fumbled it at the end.
About a year ago a friend of mine asked me what it would take for me to get back into one of the X-books again after all the wringers they had put my favorite characters through and I told him “if they’d put Rogue and Gambit on the same team again, I’ll show up for it.” He was very fast to tell me several months later that Astonishing X-Men had them working on the same team again and then hit me with the fact they were getting a tandem limited series and I am so happy to see my favorites paired up again.
This run is the Southern duo at their charming best. The push and pull of their relationship has spanned literal decades at this point and Thompson manages to still make it feel as fresh and as captivating as they were in the 90s. I can’t wait to see where this goes and I really hope that this paves the way for them to be teamed up on a regular basis in other titles as well. Their energy is always great to witness and it’s a relief to finally see these two legends treated with the respect to their established personalities.
I pick this one because I'm a big fan of Gambit. This is definitely a slow one, much base on the relationship between Rogue and Gambit, obviously, but it's still a decent average comic book!
Ok well this was just wonderful. I've been mostly reading the new X titles, and they all have just so much going on. It really nice to dip into a smaller, more character focused story. Honestly if you like romance and established couples working shit out, even if you have only the barest of x-men knowledge, I would recommend this mini-series.
(This review is for the whole 5-issue run, not just the first issue).
Okay, I'm hooked. I have never read a single X-Men comic, despite being into the films since I was a kid. What can of worms have I opened? Shout out to Pinterest for all the great scenes of this particular comic, that it just decided to show me.
this is a solid 4.5. i love remy & rogue so much wtf. i hope this isn't 5 issues of remy pining and rogue pushing him away but i loved this first issue and i have high hopes!
I love the tension in the script. Gambit and Rogue were my couple goals when I was a little girl watching X-Men the Animated series, so I’m always down for some romantic drama between these two. I like the soft colors of the illustrations, and I usually prefer dar and monochromatic, but here works very well. Will be following the arc.!
Before I begin. 1 star for being X-Men, 1 star for the cool artwork. I was actually reading volume one of this. It collects the first 5 issues of this series. I got 3 pages into the 2nd comic when I realized that this was not for me.
Rouge and Gambit were in a relationship and now they aren’t? I’m all for a good romance story but I couldn’t get sucked into this, I just really didn’t care at the end of the day I guess. Gambit came off as creepy and wouldn’t back off when Rouge told him too. He seemed problematic and I couldn’t get over the fact that he wouldn’t give her the space she needed.
Also, Kitty pride was extremely selfish and inconsiderate for doing what she did. I don’t like the fact that Rouge clearly wants her space and nobody seem to be listening. This series is a no from me dawg.
Accompanied my husband into his usual comic book store. Saw this gem on the shelves of new released and swooned. Ever since I was little and watched the old X-Men cartoon, I shipped Gambit and Rogue. When the X-Men movies first came out, I signed petitions each year to get Gambit in the movies. This short series is just what I needed. Don’t know why they don’t make more heavily romantic comic books with popular characters. People like me would love it if they did! My only complaint is the writer doesn’t know how to properly use “y’all.” Other than that, we good chère.
Thompson's love of Rogue and Gambit really shines through in this issue. The way she writes the characters is on point and the art is compelling. The set up is pretty amusing and promises for a rather intense bit of play between the two. I'm curious to see where it goes. Old feelings are being dredged up by the score, and now they're stuck at a resort together for an untold amount of time... It honestly would have made a perfect episode of the old animated series.
It’s fun, and the dialogue is very real. I think this book is going to be more of a ‘romantic comedy’ than a book I have have a long discussion about theme regarding, but I look forward to seeing what Thompson has to say about these characters and respect the direction she’s taking.
The initial plot is completely rom-com cheesy, and since it involves superheroes it only makes it all the more absurd and hilarious, but I love it. This first issue was very entertaining and is exactly what I was hoping for.
It's just the thing I needed to get back into collecting comic books!
I've read several Rogue / Gambit comics over the last year , some of which have completely bombed . Kelly Thompson however seems to know Rogue and Gambit inside and out . She captures their voice so well , which was where other comics failed . She's a hardcore Rogue and Gambit shipper , like me , and it shows . On a final note the art was STUNNING ! *heart eyes*
I haven't read X-Men comics in years. A friend said this had come out and I wanted to visit my favorite X-couple. It's a fun read, a fun trip down memory lane for this first issue. Looking forward to the rest in the series.
