A day of celebration turns to horror as six engineers turn to their clan robots for a chance at planetary survival. A small chance.
A human colony preparing to celebrate three hundred years on its new world is suddenly faced with an enemy that hearkens back to their early days on Hera.
The giant bots that saved the colony have been dormant for nearly two centuries. During a celebration that proves the engineers have kept them ready for battle, the party turns into a race to save lives and get to the bots.
The engineers have been responsible for the mechanical stability of the bots. They are not pilots. The pilots are in the city, two hundred kilometers away. There are six surviving bots and six engineering clans that care for them. It is up to the engineers to get the bots up and running so that they can get the right pilot for the right job. If they can get the bots moving.
Six women, six stories, and six very different AIs giving them attitude.
So this review is for books 1, 2, and half of book 3. Because I DNF'd book 3 and I'm gonna tell you why right up front.
There are 6, no wait 7, women piloting mech suits that have artificially intelligent uh, personalities or something inside them? I dunno what exactly the dudes are, but they have names and charming personality quirks, as AIs do. So you have a cast of 12 at all times and through two and half books, you jump from shot to shot repeating the same thing all over again so that every single pairing of female pilot/male mech gets to go through the same scene.
Let me show you with THREE characters. LESS THAN HALF of what you'd actually have to put up with if you chose to read this series.
Chapter One Intro Girl A. Intro Girl B. Intro Girl C.
Chapter Two Girl A at party. Girl B at party. Girl C at party.
Chapter Three Girl A climbs into mech. Girl B climbs into mech. Girl C climbs into mech with some difficulty.
Chapter Four Girl A has convo with AI. Girl B has SAME convo with her AI. Girl C has same convo with her mech's AI.
Chapter Five Girl A jumps over the ravine. Girl B barely jumps over the ravine. Girl C jumps over the ravine.
Like, it's not word-for-word the same for each character, but it's literally taking the whole chapter to do ONE thing because we have to read about every character going through the same thing separately. How many fucking times do I have to read about them jumping over a ravine?
Every scene became boring and tedious because I would experience it with one character and then have to slog through the same thing 5 more times before I could find out what actually happened next. Everything that happened by halfway through the third book could have been spectacular in one book. But instead it's been crazy redundant and repetitive, something I am flirting with here in this review because I'm so frustrated. This author is one of my favorite guilty pleasures, but I dunno wtf she was thinking here - this is not her style and I hope it's a one-off.
I'm sorry, but this is the most excruciating thing I've ever read and I've read the Australian High Court's investigation into the Church of Scientology.
Note from future me: I did finish this series and the bones of it are great. The repetition ruins it. This author has done way better at least a couple hundred times.
Fitting that book 400 is different. The first of 6 stories building the world of Hera and Bot City. Not a romance, instead an introduction to 7 characters and their robots.
Somewhat repetitive as the same moment in time is experienced in 6 different ways. But, by the end, main characters have been met, some customs, culture and history of Bot City and Gleaming City and Hera have been presented and bot defenses have been activated.
Excellent intro to the series. We have 6 Bots defending a planet, who must work together with their female pilots.
So we get different points of view and learn about all our main characters together. I really like this kind of story, more like a episode of an ensemble tv show.
All the bots are up and running, bring on the next part of the show!
I was quite enjoying this the AI controlled mechs the clans of engineer women maintaining them but almost as a ritual rather than expecting to ever use them.
And just as it got going that was it book over. It's not really a complete story it's the first few chapters of one it sets up the world the characters the tech and general premise then ends.
I felt a bit short changed and frustrated really. I guess I should have spotted it was only 80 pages which is almost pamflet length really.
What little there was of it seemed pretty good an interesting set of ideas with plenty of things like unstated tensions between the bot city and the main city the nature of the world and the somewhat obscured history. Characters thrown into this task against their will machinations behind the scenes that seem to hint at other motivations. All lots of good story ideas that we just get a hint of then it abruptly stops with no conclusion or resolution. I guess this must have been a serial or something because it's not really a complete story.
Anyway some nice ideas but super short and not complete.
Great start to a new series. There is a lot going on, and several main character. A colony from earth was nearly obliterated 300 years ago. They beat the invaders back with the use of giant robots, w Hi have AI 's that sinc with their human pilots. After the war the surviving bots have stood guard, watching for another attack. What it came, the women who took command of the bots, were not the trained pilots, but the engineers who have maintained the bots. A fun, and fast paced story. Love the bots and the ladies who have linked with them. Story does end in a cliffhanger, which I hate, I love the author so will just deal with it.
This is the first book of a new series, begins with a bit background information on the history of the people , planet and invasion . But of a mystery on the city, why the aliens are attacking and though it doesn't end with a cliff hanger, you definitely feel a bit anxious for the next book. :) Which just shows how talented Viola Grace is. Can't wait to read more .
This is the first series I have read by Viola Grace and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire series. This book is action-packed Sci-Fi with good development of characters and storyline. A quick and entertaining read which sets the stage for a truly enjoyable Sci-Fi series. Love the characters...will be reading more Viola Grace to see where they go and how the evolve.
Part 1 of a six part series, not really to be read alone. It's kind of repetitive and not great writing (definitely could do with some more editing and polishing) but I really like the general story line and characters, and of course the HEA in book 6. A little too much detail in the tech descriptions and some confusion over the purpose of some of it. Not bad for a series written one book per week. I look forward to the following series.
Burning day is an interesting book. It has numerous points of view with lots of interesting Littlefield of information. Can't wait to get the next book I this series. Of course I love all of Viola' s story lines. By the way, congrats on reaching book 400. Keep publishing and I will keep being a happy reader. Thank you.
This gives the reader a general background for the women who become the bot pilots. I like that the plan is to have a weekly release as I hate waiting for the next book.
My first question when getting this was does it relate to the universe of most of Grace's other shorts? No, it doesn't seem to. Grace said she wanted a clean slate and she meant it. There is no mention of anything in them, no psy powers even but that's ok. My favorite books of hers aren't part of that universe either. I was hoping that like some of her other none Talent series that we would get more of a story, sorry but no.
This is not a story it is the opening scene of one. Unlike most of her short stories this isn't, in any form a story in and of itself. You are given a small introduction to several mechs and their "temporary"? pilots and a tiny bit of background on the society. The end.
It is a nice opening but I wish it was flushed out more. If this had been more than just an opening I would have given it more stars. I believe (if I get more) I am going to wait for the whole 6 part series to be released before buying more.
I didn't think I liked it till the end and then it clicked into place . The story makes you stop at the end and listen to Kiida and Dif talk there is so much hope and life that just all of a sudden falls into place as to why they continued to fight for life. I would love to be apart of the struggle.
Another start to what seems to be a great series from this author. This is something different and I can't wait to read the rest of the series. Keep letting your mind wonder Viola Grace cause it comes up with some very interesting ideas.
At first I felt like a ping-pong ball as we bounced points of view from each pair but I eventually got used to it and fell into the story. Good world building but as others have said, mostly just an opening scene and "establishing shots".
