Baker Street Mystery #2

Cookies and Scream

Rate this book
Tour guide Georgie Tanner has always encouraged her clients to enjoy the realism of an American Revolutionary War reenactment - but today things got a little too real. When one of the actors doesn't get back up after the battle, the crowd is horrified to find out he's really been shot. Patrick Armstrong, local high school teacher, is dead.

Georgie's old high school friend, Terry Brooks, is arrested for the murder. A man with a young wife and a baby, he seems the least unlikely suspect. But, with hundreds of people as witnesses, there's no denying he was the one who pulled the trigger.
He begs Georgie for help, and she's determined to do her best. After all, he'd never do something like that, would he?

Her sleuthing skills slowly uncover other possible suspects, but, try as she might, she can't shake the sight of the smoking gun gripped in Terry's hand. And then she uncovers something that terrifies her. Suddenly, Georgie is afraid that what she saw might have just sealed the case against her old friend.

This series has turned out to be a random gem. I sort of stumbled across it by accident while looking for some cozies to put on my tablet that were Kindle Unlimited, and this one popped up. I recognized the author name, but I wasn't familiar with the series. It sounded good, though, so I added it, and something about it was just nagging at me to put it at the top of my TBR pile. I'm ever so glad I did!

I loved the first one, Cherry Pie or Die, and was super excited for this one to come out. And I'm happy to say, Cookes and Scream was even better than I had hoped! The hook on this series for me is the characters, and the relationships between the characters. I'm especially charmed by the relationship between Georgie and Frank, and of the opinion they could not be cuter together. I loved how things ended for them, and I can't wait to see where they go from there.

Another thing I love about this series is the history. It's by no means a historical fiction novel, but there's just a little bit of history in it, enough to set up the story properly, and I found it super interesting. From the history of the battle that was being reenacted to the world of priceless historical relics, I enjoyed all of it.

The mystery itself was great. I thought the killer was maybe a little shady, but not at all in the way it turned out to be. I figured the person was being put up as shady to be a red herring and didn't seriously consider them, so it came as quite a surprise when the truth was revealed.

All in all, this series has become one of my favorite cozy mystery series. There's humor, charm, history, and mystery. It has it all. I'm just sad there's only 2 of them, and hope #3 will be on the way soon!

I was lucky enough to get an ARC of Cookies and Scream the second book in the Baker Street Mystery Series by CeeCee James and I loved it. We get to learn more about main character Georgie and her back story in this story as well as a great mystery with a historical twist history buffs will love. This story is thoughtfully written and with the readers heart in mind. Georgie is a great character in that she has anxiety, and has had so much hardship but she is quite resilient and not perfect. She does have a smart and curious mind, which gets her in trouble but also endears her to the reader. Great love hate relationships in this story too. I even love the relationship between Georgie and her converted food truck passenger van. Great story and it is out January 15th, 20018

Georgie has returned to her small Pennsylvania hometown after a devastating loss that has left her with many questions about the person she loved. Now she works for her (honorary) Aunt Cecelia at the Baker Street Bed & Breakfast leading historical tours. Georgie is proud of her town's role in the post-Revolutionary War Whiskey Rebellion and eager to have the tourists see the annual reenactment. When the much-disliked high school history teacher Patrick Armstrong is shot and doesn't get up, Georgie and her guests are horrified. Was one of the weapons real? If so, why would someone kill Patrick over petty local disputes? The police zero in on Georgie's childhood friend Terry Brooks who had beef with the history teacher. Terry is terrified he'll be sent to jail for a crime he didn't commit. He has a wife and baby who love and depend on him. Can Georgie help?

This story isn't bad. Mystery-wise it's difficult to figure out. The thought flickered across my mind but it seemed impossible and the entire reveal was a surprise- a confusing surprise. The title really confused me. I assumed this was a bakery or baking themed mystery. There IS a baking scene but it's jammed into the story and doesn't quite fit. I DO love history and historical reenactments so I found that aspect quite interesting. If you are not into history, the opening scene of this novel could potentially turn you off. Georgie info dumps a lot of history on her readers. I spotted a few editing errors and the writing style needs a bit more polish. Even though this is book 2 of the series, Georgie fills the reader in on her background so I don't feel like I missed anything.

I'm not certain I like any of the characters. Georgia is a bit stupid at times but I think she's a nice person and certainly a loyal friend. Frank, her Aunt Cecelia's grandson, is an ex-military turned local policeman. He's rough around the edges and tough on Georgie. I can only imagine the horrors he's seen that have made him so serious. He has potential to lighten up. I think he loves Georgie but can't admit it yet. There seem to be some sparks there. Georgie's best friend Kari is a gossip and a flirt. I would never willingly be friends with her but for some reason their friendship works. Terry, the murder suspect, is a warm-hearted man. He was bullied in school and for some reason he relies on Georgie to help him out of trouble because she stood up for him in school. I wished he would stand up for himself a bit more. I really don't like his wife. She doesn't believe in her husband enough and dumps her problem on Georgie. While Patrick Armstrong seemed to be cranky and have a beef with everyone in town, he didn't deserve to be killed. Oscar, an elderly man next to the B&B an his Pomeranian Peanut, add some comic relief and local color to the story. I'd love to read more about Peanut. She's so cute and silly.

The suspects for murderer are pretty slim. The police really think Terry did it. Detective Preston is kind of dim witted at times. Dane Evans, the father of a quarterback with a failing history grade, has an anger management problem. I don't understand the importance of football over grades. Jared Inglewood, high school gym teacher, is also a suspicious character. At the very least he's not the most moral person or the brightest teacher in the school. Christopher Armstrong, brother of the deceased, seems to know something Georgie doesn't and needs her help. I don't trust him. He seems like a shady character. It's not surprising he wasn't close to his brother but I think the reason was because Christopher was the problem and not Patrick. Christopher is a little too nervous and eager to go through the house right away to seem honorable. There's also a mysterious man in a hoodie who could be up to no good.

Characters not likely to appear again, unless they return to the B&B include Charles, an antique gun expert with the New York Museum of United States History. He seems to like Georgie and thinks they could work together. Doug and Stew, along with Charles, are businessmen visiting town and they show a lack of feeling for the victim by going out and exploring on their own after the murder. The Laceys, a nice retired couple, are very much in love and looked forward to their historical tour. They seem properly affected by what happened.

Even with faults, I like the concept so I may read more of the series.

10 Word Review - Cozy mystery with murder at Revolutionary War reenactment plus cookies!

Spoiler Free Review - I love this cozy mystery series so much! This is the second one, and was just the breath of fresh air that I needed. It has murder, history, a slow burn romance, lovable characters, and of course, cookies! What else do you need? I highly recommend reading this with a plate of chocolate chip cookies and a cup of hot cocoa, while sitting next to a fire! It’s truly a wonderful comfort read.

Georgie is acting as a tour guide for the B & B run by her “Aunt” Cecelia. Cecelia had been her Grandma’s best friend. After the death of her fiancee, Georgie has come back to her home town. For a long time, she was working her way through sorrow and depression. Now, she has a place to live, a job she enjoys and people who care about her.

This small group of tourists is getting the grand tour through town and are on the way to a re-enactment of a battle in the Whiskey Rebellion. It is an annual event which brings crowds and a fun time for everyone.

Then the battle becomes very realistic.

This is a quick read.

Georgie is a well developed character. Because she is in the town where she grew up, the reader gets to see her with people who have long relationships with her. Georgie is a good and thoughtful friend to nearly everyone. She is close to Cecelia’s grandson Frank. He went to school with her, is a policeman and the kind of person who will offer help to nearly anyone in town.

It is comfortable to be among people who have known you since you were a kid.

The plot is well done. Although this is second in a series, it is easy to follow and understand the action.

I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading another book in this series.

This series is definitely getting better and better with a lot of things to get my teeth into.
I am glad that I picked up the next book despite my initial impression towards the first book.

What I find unique about this cozy mystery series is that you get two yummy factors blended in as the set-up. You have the historical side of fun from Georgie being a tour guide introducing facts and history of American Revolution, and you also have the B&B side of fun through depictions of Cecilia, a good-old grandmotherly figure who runs the Baker Street Bed and Breakfast.

My overall impression toward the first book was rather bland - as far as the story goes with so many things remained unclear, but I found myself enjoying this book so much better than the first book.
A bit of time seems to have passed between the first book and the second book, and the author provided a nice summary of Georgie's background and what she had been battling against; the trauma from the death of her loved one, Derek.
The cause of his death seems to still leave some room for question, but a clear explanation was provided in this one, and I was able to start off this book on much firmer ground.

The introduction to the mystery plot is as stunning and suspenseful as the first one. The build-up of excitement towards the start of the Revolutionary War reenactment is brilliant, and the excitement quickly turns into shock and suspense. I really enjoyed the depiction here, and was quickly pulled into the story.

The number of suspects was reduced down to only a couple in this book, but plenty of clues and red herrings held my interest till the end. There were some things regarding the victim's character that didn't really add up for me (as if the author had been still debating whether to make him a good guy or a bad guy), but it didn't affect my reading as much, and I enjoyed how fooled I was by the breadcrumbs that the author placed to throw me off scent.

The improved friendship between Georgie and Frank served as the icing on the cake, and it was quite endearing and heartening to see how the good relationship with Frank infuses joy and delight to battered Georgie's heart. I cannot wait to see how their relationship develops from here, and I am going to pick up the third book straight away.

My only niggle about this book is once again, the ending. It was just so abrupt and didn't even feel like landing a proper ending.
Other than that, I have nothing to fault in this book, and I will quite happily give this book solid four stars.

Georgie Tanner is delighted with her new job helping at the B&B. As a lover of history, the upcoming reenactment of the battle from the Revolutionary War is the perfect outing for the B&B’s current guests to attend. Well, they will attend if Georgie can get her van moving again.

The excitement builds as the actors prepare for the day’s entertainment. As the battle begins, Georgie realizes one of the actors has been shot. His lifeless eyes stare up at her. How could there have possibly been real bullets in any of the guns? Even more disturbing, the victim is a teacher at the school with several enemies, including her old classmate.

You will love Georgie’s aunt Cecelia and her grouchy neighbor Oscar. What better way to catch the squirrels invading Oscar’s attic than to use a few of Cecelia’s fresh, homemade cookies?

Georgie is tormented by the fact that her high school friend, Terry Brooks, has been arrested. But then, everyone in the crowd saw that Terry was holding the gun that killed Patrick Armstrong. How could he have done something like this with a wife and baby to protect? Did his one angry comment in school come true on the battlefield today?

As Georgie’s friendship with the local sheriff intensifies, the Baker Street B&B offers up cookies and recipes to get you through the mystery surrounding the reenactment. I was a bit disappointed the editing didn’t catch some of the errors. However, overall it was a fun read. 3 1/2 Stars

This was an enjoyable read. There were a lot of clues and some of them were conflicting. I am getting a little annoyed with Georgie's interference in the murder investigations. I'm sure local law enforcement shares my feelings. If she continues to do this I will have to stop the series - as I have done with other authors that overuse this plot.

Amazon synopsis:
Tour guide Georgie Tanner has always encouraged her clients to enjoy the realism of an American Revolutionary War reenactment - but today things get a little too real. When one of the actors doesn't get back up after the battle, the crowd is horrified to find out he's been shot for real.

Patrick Armstrong, local high school teacher, is dead. Georgie's old high school friend, Terry Brooks, is arrested for the murder, because hundreds of witness can’t be wrong. There's no denying he was the one who pulled the trigger. When he pleads innocence and begs Georgie for help, she agrees because there’s no way he’d do something like this, is there? Her sleuthing skills uncover other possible suspects, sure, and she wants to believe him.

So why then is the one piece of evidence she can’t shake pointing right at her friend’s guilt?

During the annual re-enactment of a revolutionary war battle, Patrick Armstrong, the high school history teacher, is shot and killed. There has been an ongoing dispute between Patrick and his neighbor, Terry Brooks. Since Terry was the person who fired the fatal shot, he is the most obvious suspect.

As the Tour Guide for the Baker Street B&B, Georgie escorts tourists to the various sites and events around town. One of the tourists that Georgie brought to the re-enactment is a curator from a New York Museum and he points out that the rifle used by Terry is not an authentic rifle from that period. This realization only makes Terry look more guilty. Terry claims that his regular rifle was missing and that he took the only one left on the table.

Although Patrick appears to have been well liked by his students, he was known to have had problems with other people in the community.

Is Terry really guilty or is he being framed? Can Georgie figure out who was responsible for Patrick's death?

The trivia details and historical information from these books is great and really adds to the story.

In this second book of the Baker Street Cozy Mysteries series, our heroine Georgie Tanner has taken a tour group to watch a Revolutionary War reenactment. When a real bullet is used and one of the reenactors is killed, Georgie is drawn into solving the murder. There are several good suspects, and Georgie seems to be on the spot when a new clue emerges.
I enjoyed this book though maybe not quite as much as the first book in the series. I like that there was more information about Georgie's lost fiance and I can see a growing romantic relationship with Frank. The supporting characters are always fun; Oscar, the neighbor, is a great addition. However, there were enough proofreading errors to distract in reading, and I also thought there were a few plot holes that weren't resolved (was Patrick Armstrong a good guy or not, why would a museum advertise a new find without actually holding it and establishing provenance).
Anyway, it's still a good read, but I'd rate it three and a half stars. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

A Blast from the Past!

Well Georgie is in the middle again! Taking her Aunt Cecelia’s B&B guests to a battle re-enactment Georgie finds herself involved in another murder mystery. As in book 1 lots of suspects with motives galore. Is the killer a disgruntled student, an unhappy football player’s father, a fellow teacher, a B&B guest, even an estranged brother? Georgie realizes that she needs closure to this death especially because she has never received any from the death of her fiancé. While she finds herself in quite a few scary situations, Georgie keeps her head & saves herself. I enjoy watching the blossoming of Georgie’s relationship with Frank. Aunt Cecelia’s curmudgeonly neighbor, Oscar, makes me smile as he responds to Georgie’s offers of friendship, too. It’s good to see Georgie finally moving forward with her life. Besides being a well-plotted mystery, there is a bonus addition of a delicious “cookie” recipe that I can’t wait to try! Chocolate & marshmallows, yum!!

For a reasonably prices Kindle book series set I really like this Baker Street Series. Each book is a little over 200 pages long, and a very quick and enjoyable read. After a traumatic life event leaves her shaken, Georgie Tanner returns to her hometown in Gainesville, PA, to help out at her Aunt Cecilia's Bed and Breakfast. She is a historical tour guide, who takes her Aunt's guests on educational trips to view historical sites and museums. Each book in this three book series deals with a murder during a historical trip. I really enjoyed this book because you learn a bit about the history of a Revolutionary War battle field as Georgie solves the mystery. I enjoy how some of the inn's guests are also suspects.

It only took me about 2 hours to reach each of these books, and that time was spread out in 15- 20 minute increments throughout a day. These are perfect books when you want to take a break and escape your reality for a few minutes each day.

Running historical tours in conjunction with Aunt Cecelia's Bed & Breakfast, is a new gig for Georgie.  One she put together after leaving the big city when her fiancé was killed.  But it's working.  The fact that she's home, in the town she grew up in, with her Auntie, good counselling - and Frank too - has gone a long way towards helping her finally heal.

At a reenactment, a gun goes off and actually kills one of the actors.  There's all sorts of controversy that comes out about the victim, and circumstantial evidence points to another of the reenactors, an old high school friend of Georgie's.  When he swears he's innocent and begs Georgie to help him, she can hardly refuse!

Another exciting adventure for Georgie, and a bit more of her own personal healing too.  The characters are endearing, and the story is a definite page turner; I highly recommend!

This very entertaining novel takes us to a Revolutionary War battle. General Washington, now President, resumes his uniform to lead a battle against the Whiskey Rebellion. Every year a reenactment of this battle is fought using replica rifles etc. This year the crowd, including Baker Street Bed and Breakfast Tourists are shocked when the opening volley leaves a general on the field...dead.

Georgie Tanner, tour guide of the B & B has a mixed group with her on the fateful day. In fact, one of the businessmen actually tells her about the differences in artillery. This difference leads to finding the murder weapon but, with the victim having so many enemy's this case will be hard to solve.

I was very entertained by this story line and the characters are so believable. Good series.

It was good to get back to Gainesville and check in on Georgie and Aunt Cecelia. This time the murder was during a Revolutionary War reenactment, and Georgie couldn't help but want to do something for an old friend who was accused of the murder. I like Frank a lot more now that he's a bit more relaxed around Georgie. His teasing is pretty funny sometimes, but he's always got her back when things go south or she just needs some sleuthing help.

I had a feeling I knew whodunut but just not why until the reveal. At least Georgie had a partner in defense during the showdown, so instead of the killer offing two more people, they were caught. I want to read the next one sooner than it took me to read this one, because I realized how much I'd enjoyed this setting and missed it!

Lighthearted, warm suspenseful whodunit novel!

Perfect in every way! Characters were warm, the mystery had a couple of twists to keep me guessing & the relationship between Georgia & Frank was cute & humorous. My own husband died 9 months ago & I grieved witb Georgia over Derek's death, but I was also glad to "see" her smiling & looking for the good things in life. I wish the author had made Christianity a part of that healing of the heart, but I'm hoping that she meant for the reader to know that God is always there, when you're feeling lost, scared, or afraid or justneed Him to listen.

This is a lovely little cozy mystery set in a small Pennsylvania town where Georgie Tanner has spent the last year rebuilding her life after returning home from the big city and a massive personal loss. As a historical tour guide she finds herself at the reenactment where a local man is shot in an elaborate murder that she quickly gets involved in despite the best efforts of her friend and local detective to keep her out of it. And so begins a story of small town clashes, tree based desputes and the finding of some very important historical artifacts and the greed and desire that goes with them.

Georgie Tanner takes a group of guests on a historical tour to see a Revolutionary War reenactment.
While there, one of the actors is killed in real life.
Patrick Armstrong, History teacher, and historian has made a few enemies. He's in a legal battle over an ancient tree with a neighbor, he failed the football star of the high school causing him to lose a 4 year scholarship, and there are rumors of him being involved in a pay to pass scheme.
Yes, there are many people mad at him for various reasons. Georgie just needs to find out who was mad enough to kill.

Another fun and well written story with lots of laughs, and a few red herrings.

Georgie and George Washington's Pistols

Georgie lost her fiance in a tragic accident ruled suicide, but she knows that isn't true and has continued to grieve. She moved back home and works with her grandmother's best friend, Cecilia who runs a B&B. She takes a group of guests to the annual reenactment of a Revolutionary War battle where one of the actors is killed. A lifelong friend is mistakenly arrested and asks Georgie to help him. Cecilia's grandson, Frank, is with the local police and tries to keep her from investigating. Plenty of twists and turns, and plenty of suspects. Excellent series.

#2 in the Georgie Tanner (tour driver and all around helper for a bed and breakfast) Baker Street mystery series set in the small town of Gainesville, Pennsylvania with a Revolutionary War history, Amish settlements, ghost stories and colonial manors.

Georgie tour is to a reenactment of an American Revolutionary War battle which is all too realistic when one of the actors doesn't get back up after the battle.

Georgie's old high school friend, is arrested for the murder and asks Georgie for help.

Don't waste your time

Sorry I used up my free read for the month on this book. I read the 1st book of this series liked it enough to try the 2nd. Only got to page 33-passing herself off as an arms expert , then offering money to two witnesses. At the police station to give her statement she gets to ask
the perp. questions with permission from the police. That would never happen. Then on page 58 she goes to the perps. and victim's houses finds evidence and tampers with evidence I was done reading this nonsense.
Will not read any more of this authors books.

This is the 2nd in the series and the first time reading this author. The main character is Georgie who has moved back home after the death of the love of her life and is trying to pick up the pieces. She goes to work at a B&B where she is a tour guide. She takes the guests out to a re-enactment of a civil war battle and the head of the group is murdered right in front of them. Georgie starts to investigate and ends up with someone trying to kill her. Can she figure this out before it's too late?

Great second book in the series

Cookies and Scream drew me in from the very beginning. CeeCee James has created some characters that are likable while still having pasts that are slowly unfolding. A history teacher is murdered during a Revolutionary War reenactment and another teacher, a high school friend of Georgie’s, is accused. He begs Georgie to help and she can’t refuse.

If you want a cozy book that leaves you with a warm and happy feeling, this is it.

Okay, I'm hooked

Just finished book 2 of this series and I am totally hooked! I love
Georgie and how she is compelled to help people. I love her sweet relationship with Cecelia and her funny love hate relationship with Frank. All set in a quaint little town that is anything but boring. I will definitely be starting book 3, but not until tomorrow or I will be up until 3 AM reading it! 😊

Smiling

I read books 1 and 2 in this series yesterday. They are "light reading" when compared with my usual non fiction and Steven King but they are wonderful. The characters are so well developed I found myself rooting for most of them. The plots are complex for books of this length and captured my attention from the beginning. The author includes plenty of true history and I really appreciate that. Well off to start the third. Well written and captivating.

Going Back to Read Book One

That's right. I read book two first, but I liked it so well that I went back and bought the first book in the series. I'm going to read it next week.

This is a fast read with interesting characters and plot twists that I didn't see coming. Cecelia especially intrigues me. The book also includes a cookie recipe that I might try, even though I'm not a chocolate fan.
