I'm back to reiterate that this mangaka really has an incredibly beautiful drawing style. I mean, every manga she's created so far is like pure magic to read. But I can't help wondering if it's okay for me to say that this particular story has a more developed plot compared to her more famous work, Therapy Game. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but it felt like the plot moved forward more smoothly without the usual bombardment of sex scenes found in her other books. Regardless, I'll definitely be on the lookout for her future works, partly just to enjoy her stunning art!
End of Edit
The art style is one of the prettiest I've seen in quite a while and the plot is quite interesting too. Unfortunately from what I've seen there are only two books for this novel which is a pity. The mix of traditional story line with a healthy dash of fantasy elements gives the story a unique appearance. Something anyone would easily like to read.
It was a cute and innocent G/PG BL with light fantasy elements that lead to a rather exciting action cliffhanger. All in all a good time. Will be continuing on in the series.
Chiharu is an author who goes back to visit his rural hometown, after deciding he needs a beak from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. It's not long after arriving that he meets Rin, who he later finds out is a water dragon. Oh, and also that Chiharu has been promised to Rin as his betrothed.
I absolutely love The Dragon's Betrothed, Vol. 1 and will be diving into volume 2 once I get my hands on it. It has a beautiful art style, well developed characters (both main and side), and a fun plot.
The arranged marriage trope was perfect here and led to so many cute and funny moments. The small town setting was great and I really enjoyed the side characters.
I must admit that I half-expected a trashy shapeshifter romance, and instead got the fluffiest and cutest manga ever!!!
Chiharu decides to spend some time in the countryside, in his grandmother's house. At the train station he meets Rin, an odd, silver-haired young man who doesn't seem to know how the world works, and who claims that he's waiting for his wife. Chiharu leaves, but later on when he goes for a walk in the forest, he's attacked by wild boars. Fortunately for him, Rin saves him: he transforms into a fearsome dragon and scares the boars away. But maybe Rin being a dragon isn't even the strangest thing about him, because he claims Chiharu has been promised to him by his grandma.
It's a funny and cute manga as Rin learns about the human world and how he tries to convince Chiharu that they'd be good spouses. :D He cooks, he does the laundry, he takes Chiharu to see the sunset when he's upset. I love that Chiharu slowly gives in and grows fond of Rin. I'm also really curious about what happened to his grandma and why his aunt acts like that.
This volume ended on a cliffhanger, so can't wait to read vol 2! Don't want to jinx it, but I think this will become a favourite.
the art style is so pretty. the character's chemistry is addicting and really intriguing though the plot is quite cliché, it is not a drawback for me because i like cliché stories :3

This title was at the top of my wish list for 2021 and Hinohara-sensei did not disappoint me.
First of all, the art: I liked them very much! The delicate drawing style and the composition of the images are beautiful. Plus, the chibis are really very cute and brought a smile to my face every time. However, I find it a bit of a shame that Rin and Chiharu in particular are quite similar when you look at their facial shapes and features. This happens in other manga too, but here it was particularly noticeable in one specific scene. But when it comes to facial expressions, we have two very different characters here.
I also really like the story itself. The (german) blurb describes nicely what we can expect in this volume. While Rin would marry Chiharu right on the spot at first, Chiharu is understandably unenthusiastic about it, because firstly he is totally blindsided by what's happening, secondly, he has no plans to marry, and thirdly, he has never been attracted to men before. One can almost feel sorry for Rin when he is constantly getting his ass kicked by Chiharu and told that he is annoying. I like the fact that Chiharu doesn't give in to Rin's advances and doesn't put up with anything. This allows their relationship to develop slowly. Rin slowly understands, also with the help of Chiharu's sister Yuri, that it takes time and empathy to win the heart of a human. And for Chiharu, who finally comes to terms with the fact that he won't be getting rid of Rin any time soon, the initial annoyance turns into curiosity and he begins to take an interest in who and what Rin is.
Rin and Chiharu are both interesting characters and besides the romantic aspect of the story, we also have a mystery element in the story, which I like. The volume ends with a cliffhanger in this regard and I can't wait to see what happens next.
The start of Run (the dragon god) & Chiharu (The writer) is so cute! I love the art. Other than the "wife"(I'm stingy lol, I'd rather Rin calls him his husband than wife) this was fun! & Ended on a cliffhanger 😭. The bonus stories were sweet!
I love Chiharu's friends (disliked his aunt), & how gods came be to be here. Chi's cute dog Urara! Little Kouta's so mature. Liked how Rin tries to win Chiharu's heart, slowly melting him. I am wondering why C's grandma promised the god.
Comic rating:
1) The Characters: 4/5 2) Story flow & enjoy: 4.8/5 3) Art: 4.5/5 (not colored) 4) Sexy/Steamy scenes: 0/5 5) The feels: 🤨🥺🥰😍😏🙃🤯
I really loved this first volume of this manga it was a fun and cute read for the most part looking to reading more soon. The characters were great to read about Chiharu and Rin really do mesh well together looking forward to where their relationship goes next. The story is really interesting it starts with a writer Chiharu going to his home to town where he meets Rin a Dragon god who says Chiharu is his bride his grandmother promised him so he is trying his best to win over Chiharu I am really looking forward to reading more. So overall this manga is really good will read more when more is out.
Sweeter and tamer (thus far) than Hinohara's other English-language releases, this is a story that's taking its time. Chiharu has finally returned to his tiny hometown, where he clearly has a lot of emotional baggage and unresolved issues. Rin is just thrilled to meet his bride, and he's like a golden retriever in his enthusiasm and eagerness to please. The plot's taking its time to develop, and I really like that - it makes each moment where Chiharu opens up feel more rewarding.
Plus there's a cute dog alongside the cute dragon. How can you go wrong?
DAMN 🥹, I was hoping I wouldn’t enjoy this because it’s on an indefinite hiatus but I LOVED IT. The part where Rin shares with the squirrel is so cute! Also that cliffhanger at the end!?! I need the second one right this minute 🤲. It’s cute and fluffy, but it also has a plot and great characters. The art is stunning and I’m so excited for the turn of events at the end!
Not only do I love that I can spot Hinohara's work from a mile away, but it's just so beautiful and captivating and worth looking at. Call me biased but she could draw pages and pages of literal dumpsters on fire and I would still be just as obsessed.
Chiharu & Rin are fucking adorable and I can already tell I'm going to love their story. To summarize volume 1: Chiharu is endearingly stubborn & Rin is a golden retriever dragon.
This was a wonderful introduction; on to book 2 immediately because WOW, that cliffhanger.
I'm a big fan of Hinohara Meguru. I love Therapy Game as well as Restart, but this series is probably her best one yet. It doesn't have the most original premise, yet everything is so well-done. As always, the art is gorgeous. The leads have good chemistry and I can't wait to see how their relationship would develop. In addition, the humor is top-notch: there are so many scenes and panels that I keep going back to because they are that funny. I just bought Vol. 2 and I'm so excited to devour it.
I love an arranged marriage trope, especially in manga, so The Dragon’s Betrothed was exactly what I wanted!
While he’s a child, Chiharu’s grandmother promises his hand in marriage to the water God, Rin, I’m exchange for a wish. All grown up, Chiharu’s returned to his familial home to get away from the high speed life of the city. He’s an author now, like his grandmother was and his first book was well received, making him pretty popular with the locals.
While at the train station, he saved a man covered in rags asleep on the side of the road, from being attacked by birds. The man, Rin, tells him that he is there to meet his bride, who he hasn’t seen in a very long time and doesn’t know what she looks like. He only knows her name. Little does he know that he’s already speaking to the person he’s betrothed to.
This was full of comedically timed antics of a dragon in human form learning to live as a man. It was wrapped, but there was no reason for that. I’m guessing it will get 18+ in later volumes, but for now… no reason.
I really liked the banter between the MC and love interest and of course, the fact that he’s a dragon and water god really make you think that anyone in the story can be a god in human form. We shall see once the next volumes release.
I've been sitting on this series partly because with how much I loved Secret XXX and Therapy Game, it seemed like a pretty safe bet that this would be excellent as well - and partly because I was afraid that I might be wrong.
Have never been more glad to be right. This was stunning...and maybe even better than Therapy Game? It depends on how the whole series will play out, which I think will take a while since Hinohara hasn't made it a focus at the moment.
Don't get me wrong, Therapy Game is a major top favorite. But this has so much I love.
The extraordinary artwork, of course; Hinohara is probably my favorite manga artist, and is definitely up there in the storytelling as well. That part is intriguing here, and also a bit of a slow burn. We don't know yet what happened to Chiharu's grandmother (or his parents, for that matter), and why he feels so much guilt about her and everyone else in the small village he left behind for his big writing life in Tokyo. And we don't know why his grandmother made a betrothal bargain with a dragon god. What did she receive in return? Had she ever intended to tell Chiharu about the deal?
There's some drama at the end, with a kitsune (or maybe a nogitsune, since it seems to be a dark spirit) taking on trickster human forms and then attacking Chiharu. I'm sure there will be some answers about that early into the next volume, which I fortunately already have on hand. A lot more questions come up: like what Rin does as the god, why he isn't known and worshipped in the village (when the priests all seem to actively interact with him), and what Chiharu's future will be as the husband of an immortal god who's already lived for centuries. Rin already mentioned transforming him physically so they could live in the lake together, but would he become some sort of demigod in the process? Is this going to have a happy ending, or one of those "open endings" that Hinohara has Chiharu's grandmother saying is the best way to leave stories up to the readers' imagination.
I hope not. I really do need a happy ending.
Still, this was utterly fantastic. And there's even a cute dog.
if I had a nickel for every time there was a manga about a guy being accidentally swept into a marriage with a supernatural creature and I picked it up because I thought it would be contrived and entertainingly bad but instead it was a beautifully drawn slowburn romance about an immortal shapeshifter helping an overworked writer out of his depression as the overworked writer teaches the immortal shapeshifter that love isn't hopeless after all and they connect over their passion of stories and both discover what it means to live and be human together and I end up wanting to weep about all the ways we show devotion then I'd only have two nickels but it's weird that it happened twice
I'm very used to gods looking very cool and intimidating so this book is a breath of fresh air to me. Watching Rin try so hard to make Chiharu fall in love with him while acting so cute is endlessly entertaining. I also love the way Chiharu not bending over backwards just because the other party is a god. And also the art is so gorgeous. This volume is a bit too short for me, unfortunately. But I'm sensing some angst behind this connection of theirs and I wanna see how it all plays out! Onwards!
OBSESSED ! this is the same author as "therapy game" and they are just REALLY good at developing really interesting, dynamic characters. Also this plot was FANTASTIC - the pacing was perfect, the slow burn really built in this first volume, and this story was just genuinely exciting to read. LOVED it
i dived right into this manga without knowing any other work by this mangaka - and let me tell you - i will consume everything what they ever made. i will just snort it like good stuff okay. the story is interesting and i know - it could sound little bit boring - i find it really exciting and omg the little foreshadowing for the next volume! also i love the little doggo - best girl urara! ♥
le style de dessin est absolument magnifique, as expected of Meguru Hinohara ! et qui ne veut pas épouser un dieu aussi adorable, mignon et effrayant que Rin !?
