If self-care is one of your NYRs for 2020 then I can't recommend this book enough. The author presents a series of easy-to-follow chapters which are dedicated to areas such as Sleep & Breathing, Movement & Nutrition, Coping Skills, Physical Environment, Social Connection, Mood Boosters, Goal Setting and Values & Purpose.

Each chapter is laid out well, with bullet points highlighting key concepts and mantras, pages to add your own notes and reflections, and the author uses her own personal stories throughout to describe how these ideas helped her through some difficult times. At the end of each section is a series of simple Yoga movements that are related to the subject matter and these add a nice holistic feel to the book.

I read it cover-to-cover, but it's a good one to dip in and out of as well, or simply dive in straight to the chapters that resonate with you the most based on how you're feeling at that particular point in time. There's lots of useful info and opportunities to create your own 'Vitality Wheel/Journal' to help you put these ideas into action.

Practical and valuable

This book is a practical, thoughtful, and down to earth resource which will be of use to many people. Reading writes clearly and well about her own challenges and how we can usefully address our own with simple techniques for nourishing and strengthening ourselves. Her tone is gentle, empowering, and calming, and there is a variety of advice for different aspects of life.
The book is beautifully illustrated and presented.

I read a lot of self development books and have recently read a few regarding the topic of self care and this is by far the best. Lots of useful tips that are easily applied to every day life to improve the way you feel and behave. This will be a book I dip into again and again

Self-Care Solution is a self-help book that is designed to support and teach you how to take care of yourself. The book stresses how self-care isn't selfish (very true), but rather how it's essential for yourself so you are able to perform your duties for yourself and others.

The book categorizes self-care into eight sections: Sleep, Rest, Relaxation & Breathing, Movement & Nutrition, Coping Skills, Physical Environment, Social Connection, Mood Boosters, Goal-Setting and Accomplishment, and Values & Purpose.

The author also shares her personal stories woven in with the related sections, so it feels more real, practical and authentic.

Because this book wasn't available almost anywhere (including at the library 😞), I did purchase it, which I rarely do.

I was attracted to the pretty design (I did see a preview of the book), and the way it was organized. Whoever designed it was happy to use colours, images, fonts, graphics and categorizing to make the design look very appealing. A lot of self-help books barely have subheadings, so this was impressive. It set itself apart from other self-help books in this area.

The actual content was somewhat impressive. Unfortunately this area of self-help (self-care) is pretty straightforward and not complicated, so sometimes the author stated some obvious things. On the spectrum of how much self-care you do, this book is directed at the people who do less to none. People who do a medium amount will benefit too, but not as much, and people who are almost on top of it will benefit even less.

Good things
"Try writing down your worries. This might help crystallize your thoughts or identify underlying issues. You could talk them over with a friend. Saying out loud what's on your mind brings clarity and can dampen down the emotional charge of runaway thoughts. Hearing that others share your feelings can help normalize the situation too." (114)

Walk&talk (126)

Who do you aspire to be?
"Ask yourself how would you like to be remembered? How do you want to be as a partner, as a parent, as a daughter or son, as a friend or in the workplace?" (197).

Author described the 'Values in Action, Inventory of Strengths' test. I'm excited to try it.
www.viacharacter.org/www/Character-St...

Bring self-care to life by "generating a list of mood states and writing down what you'll do to help yourself in that circumstance. Write out statements in the form of "If I am feeling X, then I will do Y'." (209).

Didn't like
Bad nutrition advice. "Fill up on protein (meat, fish and eggs), fresh fruit and veg, rather than carbs" (89)
You're not a nutritionist and you have no explanation or evidence backing this up, so don't recommend it. DON'T fill up on 'meat, fish, and egg' proteins. Eat plant-based proteins that may sometimes be complemented with meats or eggs. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is good, but what the hell does "rather than carbs" mean?? Fruits and vegetables ARE carbs, idiot. (Sorry, that was mean but seriously...). Eating meats and fruits and vegetables only isn't a healthy diet. Make sure to include nuts, seeds, grains, lentils, legumes, beans, etc.

"Embarrassment is a signal that we've made an error and some kind of adjustment is needed" (110)
Um, no? Not always

Apart from the selected quotes, the author mostly did a good job with this book. There were a few other things that bothered me but they were mostly minor.

In conclusion, I would recommend. Overall I did learn some things (and I enjoyed seeing the design - exercised the design part of my brain!) and may return to this book when I'm looking to improve some areas of self-care. Unless you are a self-care expert, most people will get something out of this book.

This book talks about why self care is important and how we need to look after ourselves. The author uses a metaphor of us being like a cup. We need to keep our cupped filled in order to give some of ourselves to others. If our cup is empty we have nothing to offer others. So, we need to keep our cup topped up with little things that help take care of ourselves and makes us happy.

This book focuses on 8 different areas :

*Sleep, Rest, Relaxation and Breathing
*Movement and Nutrition
*Coping Skills
*Physical Enviroment
*Social Connection
*Mood Boosters
*Goal-Setting and Accomplishment
*Values and Purpose

You don't have to read the chapters in order and and pick and choose which ones you want to focus on more. At the end of each chapter are some yoga or breathing exercise you can practice along with space to write down your notes.

I really enjoyed reading this book and found it really interesting. I like each chapter and took something away from each one. A great book to read if you are on the journey of self-care discovery

The book served as a wonderful reminder that helped me feel anchored and grounded during the dark days of 2020. I enjoyed the friendly narration and beautiful design of the book.
Some important lessons:
-Put a ring around it- circle the task, area of your life or A PERIOD to help make life feel more manageable. Know that there are bad periods in life but they won't last forever.
-Know your boundaries. Place energy where you do have control.
-Post-traumatic growth: crisis results in growth and transformation. Ask yourself the following question: What strengths did you call on? How have new relationships developed? What new doors have opened? Has your sense of appreciation for life itself changed? How have you grown?
-I have all the time I need
-Make space for feelings
-Bring your positive to negative comments to a ratio of 5:1
-Your future self is a cummulation of every choice in this moment. Make healthy choice.

A very well-structured and practical book about self-care. It was a good read in accessible and clear language, so it wasn't difficult at all to apply things to my personal life. You don't have to read the chapters in particular order, so you can skip on ahead to something you think is lacking in yor life. Though I advise you to read them all! Only remark is that the anecdotes relate very much to the experience of being a mother, which makes it less accessible to those who can not empathise with that. It's also very much from a female perspective, which is a pity, because men might not relate at all and find it a bit harder to apply this, though ofcourse, it's still doable!

Pros: A quick read with clear, simple, common sense ideas and advice for filling your cup. “Revolution” is an overstatement, but this is accessible and full of good reminders. Visually attractive, felt like reading a magazine.

Cons: The descriptions of yoga poses at the end of each chapter didn’t really work for me (I’d rather follow along with a yoga video), and some of the design elements were a bit distracting (the dot/circle theme sometimes was overused, looked like bullet points where it didn’t make sense). Sometime repetitive, but so short it didn’t matter too much.

As the author herself wrote, this book is based on common sense. However, it definitely helped me to consolidate and expand my self-care routine, but I as well as shift my perspective on self-care which has been valuable.
The book itself does not suggest anything revolutionary per se but is a good start into the world of self-care for anyone who needs inspiration, motivation or ideas.
Well written and organized book which can be consulted often and read non-linearly.

2 stars seems a little harsh but I just didn’t find I extracted much from this book. I think yoga poses are very hard to describe on paper so I didn’t love that element of the chapters and I also think this didn’t work great in kindle format in terms of the pictures in black and white and the end summary boxes. Some great affirmations and encouragement through sharing of the author’s own personal stories but maybe I’m moving on from my self help era because this just didn’t resonate with me

Smart Habits for self care

A comprehensive and helpful book, but the opening sections selling the approach seem unnecessary as anyone reading this will already be motivated to try the techniques. Particularly useful are the illustrated yoga poses as an active way of addressing stress and negativity. Well worth a read.

Nicely written book with themed chapters. Didn’t really engage with the whole vitality wheel/vitality journal thing but did enjoy the writing style, and the use of personal stories among the referenced science elements. A good balance.

Didn't really think much of this book to be honest. I found that most of the information that was in there was a bit vague, although there were little bit and pieces of it that could be slightly helpful to me. Not the best book I have ever read but informative all the same.

Thought this was a touch too preachy at times, but I picked up a couple good tips and mantras through the pages. I don't know if I'd recommend this, but I see how it could be helpful for someone going through a hard time.

Very useful guide to structuring and prioritising self-care, but I found the motherhood / familial experience stuff at the beginning off putting and I do wish there were preliminary notes on books like this.

Overall nice, but it still stays a bit on the shallow side. It touches many topics (too many) so I feel like nothing actually gets actually mastered. On the other hand, very easy to follow and nice graphics.
