If you want an easy, approachable craft project, this might be a good book for you! This cute little book is focused on crafting, not baking-- most often it utilizes graham crackers that you cut according to diagrams, but also it often calls for other store-bought cookies, such as molasses cookies or vanilla sandwich cookies. For the royal icing, the book strongly recommends meringue powder over whipping fresh egg whites since it's easier, technically more food-safe, and meringue powder is purchasable at many craft stores.

This book has a short introduction on the basics you'll need to know: icing, tinting/coloring the icing, piping the icing, decorating with candy and other items, and tips for making a sturdy house.

Each little house has simple, clear instructions. The "ingredients" on each project lay it all out and tell you exactly what you'll need: how many whole graham crackers, how many half or quarter crackers, how to cut them, how much icing, and anything else you'll need, including recommended decorating items.

These little "gingerbread" houses are not just for Christmas! Other holiday-themed buildings make an appearance, such as a Sweetheart Cottage (Valentine's?), an Easter Bunny House, and Dracula's Castle to name a few. There are also designs without a holiday in mind, like a Big Red Barn, a Caribbean Bungalow, and a Cozy Cabin. There are some fairy tail buildings too, such as a Mermaid Palace, The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, and a Mushroom Gnome House.

It's an approachable project book for kids, but also adults who maybe didn't think they even *could* do "gingerbread" houses. Since there is NO baking involved, you can focus entirely on the crafting. If you already have all the basics of making and decorating gingerbread houses, or if you want a guide on how to bake true gingerbread (no graham crackers or other store-bought cookies), you will want a different book instead of this one. But if you want to do the crafting and decorating without the baking, or if you want to begin to dip your toes in the water of gingerbread houses, take a look at this short little book to get you started.

If you’d like to get away from store bought kits, but still not have the hassle of baking your own gingerbread, this book feels like the one to pick up. Caveat - I have not yet tried to put any of these together but there are several I would like to try this year. If I do and they’re easy to do (or not) I may come back and not and adjust rating accordingly.

What I liked is the variety, but also that it does suggest specific candies and cereals. Since it isn’t a Kit, you could have room to do different cereals or candy if you want (for instance I prefer shredded wheats or Golden Grahams on roofs rather than Chex mix) but it gives you an idea to start with.

The instructions seem clear, although doing may be different than actually reading. So again I may adjust when I’ve actually tried some, but it’ll get at least three stars for picture inspiration and Candy suggestions I suspect regardless of everything else.

Some cute ideas for making gingerbread houses using store bought graham crackers, cookies, candies. etc. Lots of frosting on some of these (two recipes for royal icing are included). Nothing I really want to make, though.
