Addison Holmes Mysteries #6

Whiskey and Gunpowder

Rate this book
Something old,
Something new,
Something borrowed,
Something…bedazzled?

In twenty-four hours, Addison Holmes will be a married woman. Maybe.

A week to plan a wedding in the south is not for the fainthearted, but Addison (along with the help of her neurotic mother, unreliable sister, and unpredictable Aunt Scarlet) are determined to pull it off.
There’s just one problem. Okay…two problems.

Problem #1: The preacher is missing.
This seems like a bad omen to Addison, and all the best investigators she knows are taking part in the pre-wedding festivities (that’s code for drunk).

That leaves one man for the task: FBI Special Agent Matt Savage. But Addison isn’t sure he’s the man for the job. She and Savage have a complicated history, and Savage could make the preacher disappear forever if it served his own agenda.

Problem #2: Rosemarie Valentine is in charge of booking the bridal party for a spa day. Enough said.

Liliana Hart

Liliana Hart spent five years teaching music in the public education system. She molded America’s youth, busted kids for smoking pot in the restrooms, and broke up illicit affairs behind the stage on a regular basis. (Liliana’s Addison Holmes Mystery Series, about a small town teacher who gets into a whole lot of trouble, is somewhat autobiographical, but she won’t confess to which parts).

Liliana began reading romance novels with all her new found free time, and when she ran out of things to read, she decided to write her own novels. The result was a 150,000 word thriller—a dazzling adventure—where the heroine was a thirty-year-old virgin assassin (Yes, you read that right). She couldn’t imagine why people weren’t knocking down her door to read it, but she persevered and began writing a second book. She finally got the hang of things, and eventually learned that losing one’s virginity wasn’t all that romantic after all. All of her books involve some kind of suspense (she just can't help herself), laughter, and a lot of steamy sex.

Since the failure of her first attempt, Liliana’s books have won awards such as: The Daphne Du Maurier, The Suzannah, The Linda Howard Award of Excellence, The Maggie, and many others. Her affiliations include Romance Writers of America and Mystery Writers of America.

Liliana loves to cook, and is addicted to reading, Internet Boggle, kickboxing, and Bones. She lives in a big, rambling house in Texas with a couple of cats to keep her company. She loves to get emails from readers.

Enjoy the Adventures!

What can I say except Addison Holmes is the best. I have truly enjoyed the entire series and only wish it hadn't had to end. I am glad everyone got their stories told and we can be happy for them all. Liliana Hart definitely knows how to write not only mysteries, but ones with lots of laughs. While you could pick this book up and enjoy it, I would totally recommend reading the series all the way through. It would definitely be worth it.

Explosive!!

Liliana Hart has stated this is the last Addison Holmes book. I am so sad because I love this character. However, if this has to be the last book Ms Hart sure had Addison go out in a blaze of fire! I actually laughed out loud too many times to count. Addison actually attracted more trouble than ever before. I am truly amazed at everything she got herself into. The ending was phenomenal, but pure Addison! Do not miss this one!!

And so the series ends... I can't say I am unhappy about that, but the last 2 books were certainly better than the first 4. This one takes place a week after the last book. Addison has one week to plan and carry out a wedding, clear her cases so she can get away, and solve a case off the books that she picked up from the pastor who will marry them. Assorted hijinks ensue, as it has in every other book, and Addison will be married with 2 black eyes. Rosemarie really steps up her game, and turns out to be a competent wedding planner. While the pastor's problems turn out to be so unlikely, the ending is pretty good. (I mean how can he be one thing for 10 years and suddenly something else?) Everything comes to an end in a satisfying way, and it is clear that the adventure is over, and new ones are beginning for all the characters. Glad I didn't give up on the series, but I would not really recommend it to anyone who loves mysteries. These were not so much mysteries as soft, PG rated porn with a little detecting thrown in.

The sixth book in the series about Addison Holmes starts of as usual, with her complaining about something and in a situation beyond her control but still, somehow her fault. The sixth and hopefully last book was unfulfilling, repetitive and shallow. I’m so tired of her constant bitching and talk about how fat she gets from just looking at a cinnamon bun. You could feel that even the author was tired of writing the series and just no longer cared. And that is pissing me of. I overall really liked the series and if this indeed is the last book, it was not up to its full potential and I feel as readers deserved more.

Really enjoyed this book - good mystery, engaging characters, just what I needed for a light, entertaining read. Seeing as I started at bk 6, I'm now going to go back and start reading from book 1!

Loved it

Once again it was a great book by Liliana Hart, I laughed, for emotional and could not put my kindle down! As I knew that this was going to be the last book in the series I tried to read it slow so I could savor it -if you have enjoyed Addison, her friends and her family in the past you will love this book even though it’s a little bittersweet it’s over now... Maybe we can get a spin off series about Savage? ;)

I'm a little sad right now not going to lie! I loved reading this 7-book series about Addison Holmes and Nick Demsey's adventures. This series was always my lite, fun read and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I felt the author owed us loyal readers who stuck with the 7-book series an epilogue. The author teased about what maybe on the horizon for Addison and Nick, but then it just ended. It was like NOOOOOO, give me a peek into something?! So yeah kinda sad...

Absolutely hilarious!

It was bittersweet for me to read the last in the series but, the book was absolutely hilarious. I loved the moving forward of the whole gang and laughed my way through it all. This book did not disappoint.

Just read it...

Ridiculously funny, sweet, action packed and an ending only Addison could have. You just need to read it...and then do it again.

Addison Holmes is a former high school history teacher who is now a working at her friend, Kate's detective agency. She and Nick, a police officer, recently got engaged and he wants to get married in a week's time. So Addison has to solve her outstanding cases so she can take off for a few weeks on her honeymoon in addition to planning her wedding. Not an easy thing to do but she does have the help of her best friends, Kate and Rosemary, her mother and her great aunt Scarlett.

Some of the cases Addison has outstanding include a wife who suspects her husband is having an affair because he takes their dog for a walk for a couple hours three times a week and is gone for a while and a preacher who has a stalker.

It was a light fun book to read. It is written in first person perspective from Addison's point of view. I liked the writing style ... it was amusing.

This is the sixth book I've read by this author and I enjoyed it. Though it is the sixth in the Addison Holmes series (I've read them all), it works as a stand alone. I'm assuming this is the last of the series since everything had a conclusion. It was a fun series and it's good that the author chose to end it while it was still enjoyable.

What can I say, I held off reading this one because I thought it was the end and I didn't want the series to end so I thought if I just bought the book and left it in my kindle another book might eventually come and omg a couple if year's later and a new Addison Holmes book is about to be released!!! That got me so excited I then dived into Whiskey and Gunpowder and omg I laughed myself silly...
Addison never disappoints, Aunt Scarlet is always up to something, Nick always has Aadisons back even when he is shaking his head at her antics...lol Rosemary is always wonderful value, Kate well after a long friendship with Addison it's a wonder she is not an alcoholic and Savage, well Savage just needs to stand there looking pretty...

Yep whole book was amazingly hilarious...
The ending was seriously worth getting to and I was hoping it never ended.

It's so depressing to realize that this is the final book in the crazy life of Addison. However, there are many possibilities for a spin off or 2 especially when thinking of RoseMarie and Scarlett. It was hilarious and sad but always fun to end as it did.

I get when the main character is supposed to be a little 'poorly educated' and says some dumb shit. But when the author of a book I am reading makes disparaging remarks about the factual existence of climate change, I have to seriously question why I am reading a book by someone so willfully ignorant. This wasn't written in the 1960's so there's just zero excuse for this. This is not opinion, this is reality and if you can't bring yourself to read and understand the global reports on this than you really have no business writing books at all. I mean what the hell man? Might as well write a book about how all the characters believe the earth is flat cause that's how stupid it sounds. I've read, noted and let slide a bunch of tasteless racial stuff by this author and maybe I should have just recognized that as the red flags they were. But to see read a snarky comment about Al Gore and global warming as if it's some big joke is just stunning. Sorry Ms. Hart, but the rest of the world begs to differ. I suppose Aunt Scarlet's weakness for bald black men is supposed to be so hilariously inappropriate that we should just laugh that off too? And then Ms. Kim the 'inscrutable' Asian receptionist with chopsticks in her updo is also a suspicious character cause why not, right? The three Latino characters in the book range from one cursing elderly Latina woman who spits on the floor, to a tattooed gang member that threatens the FMC's life, to a drug cartel member who is masquerading as a priest and turns out to be a murder. Did we hit all the stereotypes there? Turns out all government is full of corrupt people, all police departments are hemmed in by laws that protect the rights of everyone regardless of whether or not they may be guilty of crimes, and the work of law enforcement is all fruitless cause the politicians protect the guilty. In the end it all reads like the red state white grievance bullshit that it is.

I enjoyed this series from an entertainment perspective. The characters are VERY similar to Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series - Addison (Stephanie), Savage (Ranger), Nick (Morelli), Rosemarie(Lula), Aunt Scarlet (Grandma Mazur). If you like Stephanie Plum, you will enjoy this series.
After a while the clumsiness gets to be like watching Lucille Ball - it is a little too much. Also, how Addison cannot control herself around Savage, even though she is so in love with Nick, is rather sickening. I understand being descriptive, but this goes way overboard. Is Addison such a nymphomaniac ninny that she cannot control herself around good looking people?
Cliffhangers - one book ends with something important, eg positive pregnancy test, but you don’t find out what happened until halfway through the next book. There seems to be a gap in the story, between books, that ruins the flow.
There are many grammatical errors in the ebook version. Is it poor editing, or an issue with conversion from print to electronic? Either way, someone should have caught this. It was every book, and every chapter.
Finally, PROLOGUE - a series of events that happen before the main event and are related to it. All the books contain a “prologue” that is an excerpt, or a preview, of a future chapter. It is not a prologue so you can skip to the first chapter.

I love the character of Addison Holmes, and combine Addison with her group of close friends, and it gets better every book! It's a toss up for me as to which "side-kick" I like better, Rosemary or Savage. Both are good friends yet there is something more.

I have always thought Savage was in love with Addison, but too much of a gentleman to horn in on Nick. He certainly goes beyond friendship a time or two, and I can think of one purchase he makes that no man I know would ever buy!

Rosemary is such a true friend that she takes on planning Addison's wedding when she wasn't even asked, an doesn't miss a trick. She finds the best cake baker who had a sudden cancellation. She finds a band that is surprisingly not bad, and she even has a back up wedding outfit (of sorts) when Addison;s gown is ruined right before the wedding. But my favorite was the closer it was to the wedding, the more Rosemary would say things like "We were really were looking forward to..." or "We always wanted that..." I especially liked her comments because Addison never even said anything about them.

So many good parts in this book add up to a enjoyable experience that I hardily recommend! Of course it is best to read the books in order to appreciate the newest addition, Whiskey and Gunpowder.

As always, Liliana Hart and Addison Holmes never disappoint. I have mixed emotions about this book. I’ve totally loved the Addison Holmes Mystery series. Addison, Nick, Savage, and the entire crew are always entertaining, full of laughs, and always leave me wanting more.

Trouble follows Addison yet she always seems to solve the mystery, usually more than one. She relies more on dumb luck than the average person, but it works for her. Nick is the perfect guy to put up with all the chaos that surrounds her. Their families are supportive but totally dysfunctional in the fun sort of way.

Whiskey and Gunpowder wraps up a lot of lives. It also, apparently, wraps up the Addison Holmes series. It’s a bittersweet moment. It’s been a great ride full of love and laughs, but everyone is moving on with their lives now. They’re all going in different directions. Although, I’m hopeful that with the way Whiskey and Gunpowder ended, there is a chance (Please, Liliana, please!) that we may get a little more of Addison and Nick. They are one of my favorite book couples!

Addison Holmes is one of my favorite heroines of all time. She is bumbling and funny, but she always gets the job done. This latest and final installment of the Addison Holmes series did not disappoint, even though I am sorry to see the series end. In this book, as always, Addison finds herself in a predicament. As she is rushing to plan a wedding in a week she runs into obstacles, such as needing a venue, when the local pastor shows up and offers a trade, his church on Friday night, for her help finding out who is stalking him. But as always with Addison, things aren't quite what they seem. Addison finds herself getting into trouble with Rosemarie, Aunt Scarlett and of course Agent Savage. This book wraps up a lot of loose end and leaves the reader satisfied, but still wishing for more. Here's to hoping some of the secondary characters get their own series and maybe we will catch a glimpse of Addison again? I received an ARC of this book through a FB contest.

I didn't realize that this was going to be the last book in the series, although as I progressed through the the book, I could see where it was leading--and maybe this series had run its course. Nevertheless, the wrap-up was rather abrupt; it felt like "woops, were out of time/pages, so this, that, and the other thing is going to happen to all these characters ... The end."

I went to the author's website just to confirm that this book is indeed the last Addison Holmes book, and see that two spinoff series are planned, one for Agent Savage and one for Aunt Scarlett. I have ZERO interest in a series featuring Aunt Scarlett, but an Agent Savage series could be interesting, if Lucy is somehow included 🤓

I have loved this series, up to this (I gave the last book 5 stars). Hiwever for this one I was generous to give it 3 stars. Maybe the difference is because I have read the other books and, for this one, I listened to the audiobook (which is my main way of book consumption these days). I know the narrator was portraying a woman from the south but she made her sound as if academically challenged. I love audiobooks but this one was just frustrating to listen to. The main character is meant to be quirky, not slow. Also, much of it was predictable, which can be OK but not when all the main plot twists are so obvious. It is saved by the side characters and their usual crazy antics. They all stepped up in this book. Hopefully this was the last in the series.

Poor Addison. The wedding disaster curse that derailed her first wedding has taken on a new form. Rather than a cheating groom, numerous small disasters are starting to accumulate. No venue, no minister, no dress, no cake, and a mother-in-law who announces she will be attending in coveralls and a flannel shirt so everyone knows how she feels about her son's horrid choices. But with only one week to go and a misprint in the paper inviting every single person in Whiskey Bayou to the open bar reception, it is too late to elope. I swear, she gets into almost as much trouble as Stephanie Plum! Plus, Addison's great-aunt is worse than Stephanie's grandmother. Poor, poor Addison--because I laughed and laughed at all her torment. If you like the numbers books (Janet Evanovich https://evanovich.com/plum-series/) you'll love these, too.
