Rhyming text tells how different breeds of dog are engaging in Christmas activities. The story is based on the twelve days of Christmas song, so French hens are replaced by French bulldogs and calling birds by Collie dogs but although it rhymes it can't be sung to the rhythm of The Twelve Days of Christmas which, with all the other similarities, made me want to do! A nice story about dogs at Christmas time though, and children who like dogs and identifying breeds will certainly enjoy this short story.
This is a great book to read with kids in the lead-up to Christmas, as a puppy counts down the days using various dogs involved in festive activities. Perfect for dog-lovers with busy, vibrant illustrations and the cute puppy on every page. As a collie-lover I was particularly happy to see that they are included, 'herding' the presents under the Christmas tree!
I picked this up because if features dogs. This picture book was nice enough but seemed to neither stick strictly to the twelve days theme, nor to a whole new narrative. The juxposition didn't really work for me. The pictures are nice, though, and I imagine that children would have fun looking at the details of the illustrations.
This is an interesting rendition of the twelve days of Christmas - puppy style. It doesn't repeat the count like the song does, but it's still familiar and follows the pattern counting up from 1 to 12 for the holiday.
