Book One in the Arrow of Artemis Series Kyri is a fletcher, following in the footsteps of her father, and his father before him. However, fate is a fickle mistress, and six years after the death of her mother, she's faced with the fact that her father is dying as well. Forced to leave her sheltered little homestead in the woods, Kyri discovers that there is more to life than just hunting and making master quality arrows. During her journey to find a new home and happiness, she struggles with the path that seems to take her away from the quiet life of a fletcher. She learns that sometimes the hardest part of growing up is reconciling who we were, with who we will become.

As a reader:
My Ratings 5 Stars-The book made it into my heart and if I had to make a top 50 list of all time this book would shimmy its way in. 4 Stars- I loved the book, it was amazing. However, it's not on the elite 'favorite of all time' list. 3 Stars- This is the broadest category. I liked the book all the way to it was average. This should be a 2.5 to 3.5 section. 2 Stars- I read the book all the way through but did not like it. 1 Star- I only give a 1 if I can't finish the book because I dislike it so much. There are a few reasons for DNF. Poor plot line, poor grammar and/or spelling, or maybe just a subject I don't care for. I DO ROUND UP!
I really enjoyed this! A book about Amazons, yes please! While Aten has written other stories, this is her first published book. She is clearly talented and I can’t wait to read more of her published works. I also think the timing of this book is good. By now many have watched the Wonder Woman movie, how could you not want to read more about the Amazons after that. This is the first book in a planned three book series. I would say this is an adventure/fantasy series with bits of historical fiction.
Kyri is training to be a master fletcher (a person who makes arrows). She has been taught since a child to hunt, shoot arrows and make them. She has never really belonged in her village, but feels free in the forest. When Kyri meets an Amazon warrior, she realizes her life is about to take a path she never could have imagined.
I’m a huge lesfic fantasy fan, so this book absolutely appealed to me. This book was just right up my alley. I loved it and was hooked after just the first few pages. I could not put this down until I was finished. Aten writes really well and the pictures just form in your mind so clearly. While this book was really exciting at times, it was also about friendships and everyday life as an Amazon. No matter what topic the book was tackling, the story just flowed really well.
This is a coming of age story. Kyri is 19 and turns 20 later in the book. I loved her as a character and appreciated seeing her growth. I would not call this a romance, but there is a huge chance for a love interest for Kyri in Book 2. And there also is a ton of chemistry between Kyri and this potential love interest. The parts of the book with them together made me smile. I really can’t wait to see if they get together in the next book.
If you are an adventure/fantasy fan, or have interest in the Amazons, I absolutely recommend this. I honestly can’t wait until book 2 comes out. It is supposed to come out in 2018, so I’m happy the wait will not be long. I need to know what is in store for Kyri and the Amazons.
I’m not into fantasy ! I’m not into anything related to this genre ! The book isn’t romantic.. it dosent even have a single kiss between the 2 MCs.. but yet, I gave it a 5 star rating ! this is one fuc**ing good book ! To be honest, I don’t even know why I loved it and can’t wait to start the second one..! I mean this isn’t my kinda book at all, but Yet I was so into it.. I mean I’ve been so busy lately but normally I would’ve finished this in a couple of hours ! Highly highly recommended!
I loved this book! It's an enjoyable book to read. You know when you start a book - you - OK, I get excited because I can just feel it is going to be a good read. I felt that with this book.
Kyri is a 19 year old girl who is living with her father. Her father is a renown Fletcher (arrow maker) and archer. Kyri's father teaches her fletching, archery and hunting. It not normal for girls to learn these skills, but Kyri is more comfortable in the forest then in a village. Kyri is close to testing to be a Master Fletcher when she meets an Amazon, Shana.
As with many fantasies there is a quest or traveling involved. Kyri ends up traveling with Shana, eventually returning to Shana's Telequire Tribe which is ruled by a young Queen Orianna who is 24 yrs old.
I believe that some of the inspiration of this book is from the tv show Xena: Warrior Princess. The Amazon tribe was in Xena - Telequire which was Gabrielle & Ephiny's tribe. The Queen's sister married a centaur as did Ephiny. I'm not sure how much of Amazon life is lore and how much the Xena writers made up. However, it just added to my enjoyment reading this book. I also felt that Kyri was a mixture of Xena and Gabrielle. She is a fierce and skilled archer with unbelievable reflexes yet she is innocent, sweet, loyal and kind.
I can't wait for June when Book 2 "The Archer" comes out.
Love Amazonian Women/World? I recommend this book. Hate Amazonian Women/World? I recommend this book. Don’t care about Amazonian Women/World? I recommend this book. Need a new series to get attached to? I recommend this.
To Lex who never stop recommending this series whenever K.Aten's name is mentioned, thank you so much.
To PL, time to show me your Cari Hunter card but thank you for the dudes' nudge + the books.
For someone who loves archery/archers, I've seen the covers before but I was thinking that visuals are for illustration purposes only - Wrong, wrong and wrong, this is not a false advertising. It is amazing how the author’s writing strikes hard and fast and goes straight for the heart from the very first chapter. I wish I could find words to describe how perfect this book is, with a precise combination of action, suspense, adventure, and romance. It’s both character/plot-driven story, love vs hate, sacrifice, and self-preservation. This book has it all and a blend of all the above is what makes this book such a riveting and unputdownable read.
Off to book two. Before this, only Cari Hunter managed to make me read her Dark Peak Series back to back.
Quickly because most of you have read this book and many, multiple times. No synopsis because the blurb is there for you to read. I’ll just say that Fletcher brought me right back to my core passion of reading, those long ago nights of hiding under the covers, mini flashlight beam enabling me to secretly immerse into a world far, far away and live and breathe wonderfully joyous characters. Present day morning after I read my Kindle into the wee hours, I only half listened to what people were saying to me at work because it was much more tempting to focus on a heartbroken, young archer named Kyri turning away from home forever, treacherous knife fights against bandits, first delicious kisses with pretty young girls, racing on top of trees, the flush of first love, and the trials of Kyri proving her mettle to earn the title of Amazon. Sigh, it was so good.
Refreshing and wonderful read. Kyri is a fletcher’s daughter thrown into circumstances which place her life at risk. Thanks to her father’s training, Kyri is ready to take on whatever challenge comes her way. I loved her mix of innocence and confidence, of awe and strength.
Lesbian fantasy novels are not usually on my must read list but K. Aten’s superlative effort may change this. I was grabbed from the opening scenes and fell easily into the lives of Kyri, Shana and Ori. I admit the movie Wonder Woman helped me to easily visualize each scene when Kyri enters the Amazon Telequire tribe but that tribute in no way takes away from this well written and well paced novel.
Don’t be intimidated by the cast of characters listed in the opening pages of the novel. There may be many players but they slip seamlessly into the narrative. The novel builds from strength to strength as we watch Kyri “ an almond tree growing in an orchard of apples” find her place in the world. Her purity and sincerity are traits impossible to resist. It will be a pleasure to watch her come into her own and acknowledge her growing attraction to one warrior in particular in the Telequire tribe in future novels.
This debut novel is the first of three in The Arrow of Artemis series. With that in mind, the first installment has the lead MC Kryi in a coming of age story. It's brilliant. The world building aspect that starts in this book only gets better from here. I can't wait for books 2 and 3 to get released throughout this year.
Kyri is an intensely likable character. Innocent in one breath and strong in character for the next. She's very complex. But it's her heart that is the strongest draw in my opinion. The cast of secondaries is long and diverse. Kyri really finds her way and her footing in this first book.
The ending might have you say, wait, what? But don't fret. Book 2 picks up almost immediately from there. It's a small miracle in my opinion that the publisher is able to push all 3 books in one year. So we, the reader, only have to wait till June to see what happens next.
This is a really light fantasy read that probably started life as a Xena / Gabrielle fanfic. The pacing is slow and... beyond the few opening scenes, there is very little excitement or adventure involved. Most of the book is about an orphaned young fletcher (arrow maker) trying to start life over and fit in in her newly adopted Amazon tribe. The story is told entirely from her POV. As such, the world is seen through her innocent, sheltered eyes. So the focus is more limited to her immediate concerns and surroundings, her friendships, her insecurities, and her instant, unexplainable attraction to the tribal queen. This is more of a character driven coming-of-age tale than a serious fantasy yarn.
The mysterious, unexplained attraction, the leisurely pacing and the use of physical attributes when referring to the lead characters (e.g 'the blonde', blue and green eyes, etc) are what made me suspect fanfiction origins. Regardless, this is still a very entertaining story, if a little too rosy and utopian for my taste. And the lead character did grow on me. Which is why I dived straight into Book 2. Plus I'm dying to know what exactly is that mystery super power she seems to have . And I hope something actually happens in the next book, both in the adventure and romance fronts.
I'm not sure why I put off reading this book because damn it was good. I spent the whole weekend reading the whole series. This whole series is reread worthy. K. Aten has definitely become one of my new favorite authors.
4.5 stars. Another lovely book by K. Aten. Couldn't go to sleep until I finished this one. Nice characters, I would've liked some more worldbuilding and maybe more descriptions of their travels as they seem to jump from one place to another skipping what seems to be days if not weeks of traveling but overall a really nice and engaging read.
Wanted to instantly pull the trigger on part 2 but I see it ends on a cliffhanger. I'll camp out until the 3rd book drops.
I really enjoyed this book. I would say it's a coming of age book set in the world of Amazon's. There is nothing overly sexual or graphic about this novel and honestly there is not too much conflict except maybe with the character, Kyri, herself. The journey was good, the characters were interesting, and the writing was done well. I look forward to the next installment of this series.
I quickly fell in love with the world and characters in this story. There's something so wholesome about them. I'm so happy that this is a series and that there's two more to i can delve into.
4.25/5, this was a welcome read amongst a lot of so-so content lately. The descriptions were very well done, attention to detail superb. There were times my attention lagged a little, but overall a solid read. Looking forward to book 2.
Wow... just wow! I can't believe it took me so long to get to this, in spite of it being on my shelf for months. If only I'd known then what a beautiful world I'd be stepping into...
4.5 star rating Was down for a bit after getting my second vaccine so this story was just it...I think I even dreamt I was Kyri in some of the dreams I remember having. Can't believe this was the first published book by the writer, this is in 2018 - that's just four years ago and it feels to me K. Aten has been around longer than that...I mean look at the way she writes.
The thing with this book is that this is the first third of a story. It does not necessarily end on a cliff-hanger. In fact, I was not too compelled to move on to book two until I read some reviews. I was concerned by the lack of action towards the end of this book and when I perused the reviews, I began to understand that this was just the build up - the world building.
I loved the world that was built! It made me want to go out and run through the canopy of trees shooting things with arrows. I may have to based on the price. And you're going to want to buy all three to experience the whole story. So, I'll be eating ramen with tree bark and leaves for a little while, but I'm OK with that.
You’ll never run out of something enjoyable to read when there are books such as The Fletcher, The Archer, and The Sagittarius (a.k.a. The Arrow of Artemis Series) to read again and again. Goodreads members such as Marthese Formosa, Lex Kent, and Agirlcandream posted great reviews about The Fletcher; so, there's no need to rehash the whos, whats, whens, wheres, whys, and hows. With that being said, I’d like to address three main criticisms about the book I’ve read on other sites that may prevent someone from buying and binge-reading the entire series.
Criticism 1: Kyri’s character is too perfect/unique to be believable or relatable. Nineteen-year-old Kyri Fletcher is by no means a Mary Sue. Sure, Kyri's brave, selfless, protective, and has a unique set of skills when it comes to the bow and arrow; however, Kyri has flaws and is constantly trying to find her balance in life. She’s lived a sheltered life (i.e., strict patriarchal region, taught only by parents, no significant peer interactions, etc.). As can be expected from this type of life, Kyri is at times too serious (🙋🏽 guilty); she lowers her self-worth, has an innocent POV, and is very naïve compared to the other characters in the book. Don’t get me wrong, Kyri wasn’t raised by some backwoods cult. Except for the patriarchal system, she was sheltered in a good way, as in a nature-loving, family-valuing, and path-finding way. Also, even though she has no living relatives, Kyri has the love and support of her new Amazon friends to help her “find her soul” and the freedom her heart desires. (I can relate.)
Criticism 2: The dialogue is inconsistent. Where are the contractions? Again, most of Kyri’s dialogue relates to her upbringing, and she speaks the same way her da speaks. Yeah, contractions don’t exist in Kyri’s vocabulary. However, contractions are considered informal, and informal means relaxed, laid-back, or casual, none of which applies to Kyri at this point in her life. In time, I’m sure she’ll sling words like it’s and I’d like the rest of ‘em.
Criticism 3: The story lacks a significant interpersonal conflict to make the story believable. What the what? Not all good/great/exceptional stories need interpersonal conflicts. In Kyri’s case, her struggle is intrapersonal. She witnessed a violent beating, an attempted rape, escaped death twice by bandits, and survived an animal attack—all for the first time and within a short span of time. Along with these challenges, she’s fighting with her own insecurities and trying to suppress the I-want-to-be-more-than-friends feelings she’s having for a certain “fire and wind,” green-eyed Amazon. (I’ve been there, not the “fire and wind,” green-eyed Amazon part…although there was this…nevermind)
Overall, The Fletcher is a solid start to a great series. I love the setting, the unanswered questions, and the hint that there’s more to come with two of the supporting characters. I was a little disappointed that Kyri and her crush’s relationship did not advance pass gazing into each other’s eyes and a few smartly placed pecks on the cheek. How-ev-er, if my crush and I sat in a tree having a private moment while she intimately traced the lines on the palm of my hand, I’d say our future looks pretty awesome.
I really enjoyed this. A cast of characters I want to spend time with and find out more about, a nice un-rushed pace in the world-building that is never info-dumping, and a story building up in this first book of the story that you just know will be epic. I can't spend too long on this review - gotta go and read the second book in the series...
In this book we follow Kyri's journey from the (maybe Iron Age era) world of man to the world of the Amazons. Along the way we slowly learn that Kyri is exceptionally talented, but as the story is told by Kyri and because she is humility, honour and grace personified, we only realise the extend of her talents from the reactions of others to her skills. This is a very nice way to narrate this story because it makes for a deliciously slow unwrapping of layers in narrative and character development, and it means that the amazing talents never become annoying or grating as they might from the pen of a third person narrator gushing about them.
In the Amazon world Kyri finds herself, friendship and love. But it's complicated. And not for angsty reasons, but with true obstacles to overcome that have me itching to find out more. It's the kind of story that has really feel with them (all the butterflies and that).
This was like reading a detailed breakdown of a training montage. It seemed more introductory, setting up relationships and important side characters, but I appreciated that Aten took the time to explain everything through the eyes of a new recruit. By doing this, it made it really easy for me to understand the Amazons and their culture and see them as a vibrant fantasy culture, not just a bunch of fantasy stereotypes cobbled together.
There are the beginnings of a romance in this novel. I appreciated where the romance ended up and am intrigued as to where it will go in the future.
Overall, an easy book to recommend to anyone who likes reading fantasy world-building and likes to read about intricate details of fantasy cultures (but written more succinctly than many of the classics).
Mix 1 part Robin Hood, 1 part Xena Warrior Princess and 1 part FF love story and you have a grand slam. I absolutely devoured this book, so glad that it's part of a trilogy. I've never been a huge fan of the Greek myths but this book has really opened my eyes to there potential. The goddess Artemis and the Amazon tribes that make up this first book are mostly new territory to me but the book explains everything you need to know as our heroine knows nothing but the small forest home that she'd lived in. After Kira saves an Amazon ambassador the adventure truly begins.
4 stars. A beautiful and shockingly emotional and moving fantasy coming of age story. Aten’s writing is superb and I am seriously obsessed with the way she tells stories. This was a really great first book to this series.
Kyri is a fletcher (she makes arrows) and a recent orphan after losing her father and she gets taken in by a group of Amazon women and the story really is about her adjusting to her new life. I loved a lot of the characters she meets along the way and the friendships she makes. Kyri herself is absolutely lovable. She’s got a sweet disposition about her. She’s naive and a bit innocent but she’s also stronger than I think she gives herself credit for.
The world building was well done and the ending left me wanting more so I will definitely be picking up book two soon because this series has piqued my interest.
This was the first book I read by K. Aten and since then I have read almost everything she has written. The characters in The Fletcher were well developed and their personal experiences as well as personalities drove the plot. Needless to say I went on to binge the other two in The Arrow of Artemis series. I have also recommended this book to many of my friends who are fantasy lovers.
‘’I have lived my life by the lead and the arrow and I respect the trees and the animals they shelter’’
I’ve been meaning to start another fantasy series and it seems like The Arrow of Artemis is going to be it. Set in a fantasy classical (Greek) world, this series follows Kyri on her journey as an Amazon! In the first heartbreaking chapter, we see Kyri leave her home and her sick father –with his blessings – to join Shana an Amazon she had rescued, in her home nation of Telequire, with some detours.
Kyri is a Fletcher, like her father and his father before him. Her arrows shoot true and had it not been for her leaving, she would have become a master Fletcher. But sexist laws in her region and her saving Shana lead her to leave to make a future and a new home. Shana, her new Amazon-sister is always by her side, encouraging her. She makes friends and family along two Amazon nations.
Kyri is a great Fletcher and a great archer. She has lived all her life surrounded by trees and knows to read nature, which leads her to partake in many extraordinary feats ... including acquiring a feline companion. Despite all this and all the people telling her how great she is and that surely Artemis is leading her, she doesn’t believe in herself. She pushes herself to be better, greater, stronger – so that she gets her Amazon feather and mask, fulfilling her promise to herself and her father.
There were some great characters in this short book (just under 200 pages). I loved the banter between many characters especially Kyri and Shana and Kyri-Shana-Coryn. I also loved that the author did not pair up Kyri with the first female (Shana) or even her first dalliance but rather allowed for Kyri to focus on herself and develop different bonds of family and friendship.
I loved Shana but now I am used to liking more secondary characters. Apart from the thieves and guards, there wasn’t a single character that I did not like in this book. Most characters, even the hard-headed ones were relatable. As Kyri and Shana reach the Telequire nation there was a slight shift between page-time with Kyri and Shana to page-time with Kyri and Ori, who is Kyri’s love interest and very important to the nation.
At first, the introduction sounded too simple and some of the language sounded too English but as I got into it, it was a truly classical experience of candle marks and rabbit furs. I also learned new things that were used in the ancient world and new survival tips thanks to this book.
This book is slow-burn, which I enjoyed. As someone on the ace spectrum I can never understand characters that get together so soon after meeting. Kyri is about to turn twenty and has no sexual experience. In the book there were Amazons that followed Artemis’ steps and it was not shameful.
Be aware that there is a lot of animal hunting in this book. I’m vegetarian but while it was sometimes graphic, I didn’t mind because it was for survival. There’s also killing in this book, but more for self-defence or protection of others. There was a great explanation about the ethics of killing people who hurt others; the killing was not done without conscious.
The Fletcher is very much the story of how Kyri got her Amazon feather and mask, but also it is the story of how she started to believe in herself and gained confidence. Kyri wanted to make it by herself and she does but her friends are there to help. The lack of a couple allowed Kyri to grow by herself first.
I recommend this book to historical fiction and fantasy lovers and those that especially love Amazons. I’d definitely keep up with this series.
This is an epic tale of a girl, who leaves her childhood home, and dying father, to fulfill her destiny. A destiny that was created by the goddess Artemis, herself. A tale of loss, of home, of family, and of innocents, but it’s also one of discover. Discovery of the potential within ones own being, of a family and home of ones own making, and of finding the other half of ones soul. A tale of overcoming all that is put into ones path, to come out the other side enlightened, and yes scarred, but also gifted of ones own self worth and love. I highly recommend this series. I am saddened and uplifted by its completion. Sadden, because I will miss the characters within, but uplifted to know their stories, triumphs, losses, and love.

I love this entire series, I've reread it twice within 2 months and I'll probably read it again here soon as I'm already wanting to go back into that world K. Aten creates. We need more stories like this, I've read countless coming of age fantasy type books with the MC being male yet there aren't that many with a female lead.
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Amazons are one of the many things I loved about the Greek mythology and this book is succeeding in creating that family feeling a tribe of women can have (be it wlw). Wonderful read and I cannot wait to see if Kyri gets her groove on with that certain someone. Well done!
Awesome! Young woman joins group of Amazons. Learns community, survival, fighting... falls in love. Part of a series (Arrow of Artemis). You WILL need to read all three and read them in order. Just plan accordingly.
With the impending death of her father, Kyri Fletcher will be all alone - without family, a home or a way to make a living thanks to the oppressively patriarchal structures of her society. Opportunity arises, however, when Kyri steps in to save the life of a woman being attacked on the road - the woman is an Amazon and offers to take Kyri with her. The Amazons give her so much - a purpose, a community, family and a young queen who captures Kyri's heart.
Kyri is an excellent character. A fierce fighter, with amazing accuracy with a bow. But her strong sense of right/wrong makes her reluctant to kill, even men who would kill (or worse) those around them.
Arrow of Artemis series (brief version) - READ THEM!! Book 1 - The Fletcher - joins Amazons, finds community, purpose and love Book 2 - The Archer - finding place in community, tragedy tears her away Book 3 - The Sagittarius - fighting (physically and mentally) to find her way back
