Prayers of the Bible: 366 Devotionals to Encourage Your Prayer Life

Rate this book
Prayer is something we find challenging at the best of times. Yet prayer is the preeminent medium in which we bring ourselves before our Lord and Savior. Coming daily before the throne of grace is vital to every Christian’s life. The fruit of more than thirty years of prayer meetings undertaken in the congregations Keddie pastored, these two-page meditations on prayer serve as a means of grace. All the main prayers of Scripture are included, as are many of the passages that teach about prayer. Each day offers a balanced diet of praise, prayer and the ministry of the Word and will encourage you to commit to the consistent exercise and enjoyment of prayer. "Starting your prayers can be like starting a cold diesel engine. Gordon Keddie’s brief devotions are like glowplugs for the soul—just what we need to ignite heart-warming prayer and propel our spiritual lives through the day." —Dr. Joel R. Beeke president, puritan reformed theological seminary "Good daily devotionals are surely among the most useful books a Christian can own....This is a book that will make an excellent aid to personal or family worship." —Dr. Carl R. Trueman professor of church history, westminster theological seminary

A really good daily devotional and exposition of the prayers of the Bible, written by a pastor my parents know personally! In some places I felt like he was reaching a bit for a neat application, but altogether this book is excellent and just great for devotional reading. I am usually terrible at those “read a chapter every day for a year” books, but I managed to keep up with this one quite well. Definitely recommend!

Pastor Keddie was my pastor for a few short years when I was first married (he baptized my oldest child), and I was one of those who attended the mid-week prayer meetings he mentions in his preface - he practiced what he "preached" in this book. He passed away earlier this year, so reading this was kind of bittersweet. I would disagree with a few things, but overall it was solid encouragement for my prayer life.

My wife gave me this book last Christmas to guide my daily devotional time during 2018. Each day’s selection is long enough to be substantive but not so long as to distract from the word or actually praying. Its content is Bible-saturated.

I was looking for a resource that would include a focus on prayer. Having completed it today, I found its cumulative effect to be one of greater encouragement to prayer and greater focus in my prayers on God’s priorities as revealed in His word.

The book includes space each day to record “Things I will pray for today.” Initially I used this, but ultimately abandoned it due to my propensity to worry about what I was writing rather than just actually praying.

We read through this in family worship this year. Mr Keddie is very clear and has many wonderful applications. This was a huge blessing to us as we try to be more deliberate about how we pray.

I have used many devotional Bibles and books to help me in my daily reading of Scripture and personal quiet times. However, the focus on prayer was either minimal or lacking. Thankfully, Prayers of the Bible from Crown & Covenant Publishing is here to help.

Devotionals to Encourage

Gordon J. Keddie is the author of many commentaries on BIble books and a number of books on Biblical themes. He attended Westminster Theological Seminary as well as the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary. In over more than forty years, he pastored four Reformed Presbyterian churches.

Keddie writes with the knowledge of a scholar but the wisdom of a pastor. There are 366 devotionals making this an ideal companion for a Bible-in-a-year reading plan. A passage for reading is given, and he takes the time to explain the text by defining words and giving clear outlines. I was encouraged by the excellent content in each devotion.

A Life of Prayer

There are a variety of quotes and references throughout the devotions. Rutherford, Henry, Bunyan, and more are included. The catechisms are also quoted. Each devotion ends with a suggested Psalm for singing. This book is perfect for private or family devotions.

The version I received was a quality, comfortable paperback edition. The pages were crisp and beautifully white. The font is large with dark black print. There is even ample space on most of the devotions for you to write on things that you will pray for today.

Pray Without Ceasing

This is the resource I will recommend when anyone asks how they can strengthen their prayer life. Persistent prayer soaked in Biblical truth is a spiritual discipline, and this book is a tremendous help. It will be a treasure to anyone who takes prayer seriously. And it will cause you to see our greatest Treasure more clearly.

I was provided a complimentary copy of Prayers of the Bible in exchange for an honest review.

My husband had been reading this book off and on for a couple of years, so I decided to tackle it. Gordon J. Keddie is Reformed Presbyterian, which we are not, but we appreciate reading authors from different denominational backgrounds. In the words of my husband, the daily devotionals are "hit or miss." I feel bad only giving it two stars, since there were good insights throughout the year, but overall, the book was very dry and quite a slog to get through.
