About the author

Jane Yolen was a novelist, poet, fantasist, journalist, songwriter, storyteller, folklorist, and children’s book author who wrote more than three hundred books. Her accolades include the Caldecott Medal, two Nebula Awards, the World Fantasy Award, three Mythopoeic Awards, the Kerlan Award, two Christopher Awards, and six honorary doctorate degrees from colleges and universities in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. I was pleasantly surprised to receive a copy of How Do Dinosaurs Stay Safe? in a Goodreads giveaway. My son is almost 3 years old and loves books about dinosaurs. The illustrations are bold and colorful and the message about how to stay safe is important, especially for toddlers. My only minor complaint is in regards to the structure of the book. All the unsafe activities that the dinosaur does are presented in the first half of the book and then the second half of the book talks about the safe way to do each activity. I think the message would be clearer if each unsafe activity was presented, followed by the correct way to do each activity. An alternating approach could be more effective. Toddler attention spans are short, so showing the right way to do something immediately following the wrong way might lead to better results.

Holding their moms hand while walking the street and wearing a helmet while riding a bike. These are some of the ways that dinosaurs stay safe. This is a goofy book which takes an interesting approach to teaching young kids on safety rules. Instead of having actual kids in the book, the author uses dinosaurs instead. These dinosaurs do all the same things normal kids would do on their days off. Like swimming in the pool, riding a bike, or just crossing the street. This book does a good job of showing young readers general safety rules in a kid friendly manner. The illustrations in the books are very colorful and bright, taking up both pages. I liked that the author used dinosaurs instead of people because it not only teaches young readers about dinosaurs, but will also keep them more engaged with the book.

Finn really enjoyed when I read this to him. The How do Dinosaurs books are some of Finn's favorites. My favorite part is that they always teach him something very important, and dinosaurs are his favorite thing anyway so it really makes him listen. At the beginning of this book, in particular, there is a page that has a bunch of different dinosaurs and he loved asking what kind of dinosaurs they were. Well, he does that throughout the entire book anyway. Which I love that they put the kind of dinosaur it is, right underneath them. So I can actually tell him what they are, unlike with a lot of other books that have dinosaurs.

She gives children an opportunity to decide what the dinosaurs should be doing instead or what they could be doing differently to stay safe. In the end, Jane Yolen helps readers answer the question by showing the dinosaurs engaging in all activities appropriately. From wearing helmets during a bike ride or staying hydrated during a hike, to calling 9-1-1 in the case of an emergency, How Do Dinosaurs Stay Safe? is a great way to teach children about safety in all environments. I would recommend this book be read to early pre-school children and kindergarten.

Oh, these books. I really shouldn't enjoy them as much as I do. But misbehavior is HILARIOUS when you know that nobody is going to actually get hurt. It's like watching a Three Stooges video! Dinosaurs jumping from roofs, riding bikes, and teetering on chair backs with scissors in hand? Yes, please! Of course, the dinosaurs then show the right way to do things, which, while not as funny, is important. Although I must say that I don't think that helmet is going to do the Agustinia much good...and I'm pretty sure his papa will be able to see the enormous dinosaur no matter where in the pool he swims!

This series has great illustrations, but is very confusing for younger readers because it appears to create mixed messages. The first half of the books show and describe terrible behaviors and ask if the dinosaurs do those things (well to a kid, the answer seems obvious: yes! They are doing those things on the page right now!). Kids see these bad examples and get ideas for bad behaviors, and then all of a sudden the second half of the books say “no, dinosaurs don’t do those things, they do these things!” which is very confusing because we just saw them doing the bad behaviors, so it seems like they do do those bad behaviors.

I love the How Do Dinosaurs… books! You might wonder why since, after all, these books are pointing out our faults and telling us, “No, no! You mustn’t do that!” Yet it’s done in such a spirit of caring that we don’t mind. They do not come across as didactic. Instead, we find them funny and can even sheepishly admit, “Yup, I’ve done that on occasion.”

A good preschool storytime choice, with dinosaur appeal and content grownups love. These books are admittedly pedantic, but families love them and the messaging in this one isn't too obnoxious or patronizing (looking at you, How Do Dinosaurs Learn to Read?). Love doing this in preschool storytime, where the kids will laugh and say "No!" as the answer to each question. Definitely roar like dinosaurs throughout and at the end, too!

I read this in preparation for my safety storytime this week. I think that this is a good one to start the discussion about safety and taking care of yourself, but I also don't think it's one that I will need to read again. Readers who love dinosaurs will love the humor and caregivers will like how the book helps start the conversation.

I loved this series because as a kid I loved dinosaurs like most boys. I love how I could use this to catch boys attention and make them think more about being safe and could use this for lessons on safety. Reinforce the fundamentals of not to go with strangers, calling 911, being careful, not being silly and staying hydrated so I have to say I love this book now because of the important lessons it taught.

I just adore this entire series, and this book is no different! The illustrations are charming, with the names of the dinosaur species subtly included on each page, and the rhyming text is always relatable and simple for kids to understand. If my daughter or one of her future siblings ever develops an affinity for dinosaurs, you can bet I will be taking advantage of the excuse to buy every book in this series!

This book is a very cute way to introduce children to safety guidelines. The use of the phrase "careful not fearful" is a good indicator of why I find this book so great. A lot of other children's books that cover some of the same topics tend to be on the scarier side. How Do Dinosaurs Stay Safe however doesn't have a humanity is inherently evil feeling to it which gives it a gold star in my book!

This is a cute book that could be used at the beginning of the school year to help teach students so safety procedures. The exciting and silly pictures will help engage students. The book features a lot of wrong behaviors, but these are addressed as wrong and paired with pictures of dinosaurs doing the right things. Jack borrowed this book from the Spring Hill Library. I picked it because he loves this series. At first, he didn’t want to pay attention so we set the book aside but later, before bed, he was willing to read it. He sat on my lap and paid attention the whole time and giggled at the silly dinosaurs. He worried one dinosaur would hit his head and he told me about how we have to be safe when there are cars on the road.

I've read other books in this series, so I know what to expect. I like Mark Teague's art. I would still prefer if there was a negative then a positive then a negative then a positive, rather than all negatives at the front and all positives at the back. The safety measures in the second half, while important, are not direct counterpoints to questions in the first half.

Though it is silly because it talks about ways that dinosaurs can stay safe, these are actually things that children can do to stay safe as well.
