A decade after publication of his best-selling book, Barth returns to the schoolhouse. Drawing from a career committed to building schools rich in community, learning, and leadership, he shows how to accomplish the most difficult task of school reform-transforming a school's culture so that it will be hospitable to human learning. In an engaging conversational style, he suggests how school people can become the architects, engineers, and designers of their own schools-and of their own destinies.
I agree wholeheartedly in much of Barth's ideas about education. In fact, I believe I stumbled upon a model that fits my own beliefs that we should all be learners and willing to try new ideas. However, he seems to be void of any true examples of how to go about incorporating many of his sentiments into practical, everyday use. Either way, I'm glad that I read the book.
I did enjoy this book. It touched on the issues that teachers and administrators face such as the "elephant in the room" (those hot topics that we'd rather discuss in the parking lot rather than at the faculty mtg). Although I had to read it for class, I would definitely recommend to others in education.
Great book for teachers/educators. Full of common sense about our purpose in educating young people and establishing and developing the organisations in which we work to meet this goal.
