A romance worth fighting for—tooth and claw.

Solitary vampire Fallon Underwood gets all the social interaction he needs being the silent partner at the Dead and Breakfast B and B high in the Colorado mountains. Change is hard for Fallon, so when his business partner, Tanner, suggests hiring a new manager for the inn, he’s adamant that they don’t need help, especially not in the form of bouncy werecat Carter Hughes.

Carter is a happy-go-lucky kitty, and he loves the hospitality industry, so the D and B ought to be a great place for him. He falls for Fallon as soon as he picks up one of Fallon’s novels and begins to woo the vamp with gifts. When Fallon finally succumbs to Carter’s feline charms, the results are unexpected, to say the least. Their mating will have irreversible consequences—for their bodies and their hearts.

With a series name of “Dead and Breakfast”, I was charmed by the premise of 2 best friends (a bear and a vampire) being proprietors of said B&B, a quaint little haven that specializes in catering to the supernatural community and all their quirky quirks.

This first installment belongs to Fallon the vampire, who's also the silent partner in this business venture. He's content with his curmudgeony hermit life, fronting up the necessary funds when needed but basically, partaking only in the perks that allow him to hole up comfortably to write his horror novels and not be bothered by much of anything. When his beary business partner Tanner, needs to hire a manger to help handle the increased workload, Fallon’s a lot disgruntled about letting a stranger encroach on his routine and is none too happy about this unwanted necessity.

Enter Carter. He’s a cat shifter and is all sorts of eager to prove himself worthy. The Dead and Breakfast is the perfect place to work at with its laid back atmosphere and casual approach, appealing towards Carter’s need to care for others but also being in a fantastic location surrounded by nature. It’s definitely the icing on the cake that one of his bosses is the attractive vamp, and Carter just can’t help himself from trying to win over the grumpy Fallon.

So basically, this entire book is about how Carter and Fallon fall in love and merge their lives but with one big ginormous snag in the middle. Vampires and shifters are not natural mates, and the ensuing problems and weirdness that develop, make things very difficult for them to achieve their happy ending.

What this story excels at is the narration by Dorian Bane. Talbot’s writing definitely has a certain flair to it where Bane, with his unmistakable raspy voice, certainly took advantage of how these characters were written and gave them distinct nuances that fit perfectly with who they were. Tanner the bear has a great tenor, Connor’s catty enthusiasm made me smile more than once, British Fallon sounds a lot like a stuffy Jude Law, and there’s even a gargoyle with an appropriate tone and cadence that's exactly just right.

Admittedly, I’ve not read a lot of Talbot, but I think she does shifters and supernaturals in her own unique way where they’re always pretty darn endearing as she plays up their unique species characteristics while melding them nicely into their personalities. I’m happy that this is going to be a series, and I’m keeping fingers crossed that Tanner is up next. Bears being gentle or not so gentle giants are my jam, and I have a feeling Talbot (and most likely Bane) will have no problem making that an equally interesting, sexy, and fun read/listen!

Thank you to the author/publisher for the audio in exchange for a honest review

The Dead and Breakfast B&B is located in the Colorado Mountains and caters to supernatural guests of all shapes and sizes. It’s here, in his new position as manager, that Carter, a werecat shifter with a jubilant personality, meets his destined mate in the form of a vampire named Fallon. Carter is all for embracing his newly discovered mate, but it seems he’ll have to work hard at seducing the broody vamp in order to win his heart for keeps.

Fallon is a silent partner in the B&B and lives upstairs where he sleeps by day and works as a successful author by night. He keeps mostly to himself, only really socialising with his best friend and co-owner of the B&B, a sleepy bear shifter by the name of Tanner. Fallon’s content with his quiet life and is unprepared and initially hesitant to accept the obvious overtures of the bouncy new kitty. Try as he might, Fallon can’t ignore the positive affects Carter clearly has on the B & B and its residents, let alone the impact Carter seems to have on Fallon’s own non-beating heart.

This story was a lot of supernatural fun. It reminded me a bit of that animated film series Hotel Transylvania, only more adult rated and with a cast of adorably quirky gay supernatural beings at its centre. This was certainly an ensemble piece and I found myself growing quite fond of all the unique characters that inhabited the Dead and Breakfast B&B.

The mate relationship between Carter and Fallon was very sweet and sexy. I found the personal impacts of such a unique and rare pairing to be very interesting, especially in terms of the changes they each experienced and the adjustments they had to make in order for their bond to develop properly and for their relationship to ultimately work. It was a dynamic and situation I've never come across before in my paranormal romance reading and I appreciated the originality of it.

Talbot has clearly set this story up with a bigger series in mind, and I’m happy to say I’ll be eager to read on when the time comes.

Literally the cutest, sweetest and fluffiest book I’ve read this year .. so far. 😍 I love that there’s good amount of angst to balance all those sweetness. 😌 And literally, Carter really is the go-happy-Colorado-kitty! So adorb! 💜 I melted! ☺️ And I love grumpy Fallon! 😁 That epilogue was awesome too. I seriously need a sequel of these two. 😉

4.25 Fallon is Carter’s, from balls to bones stars

Psssttt... this is my 1,000th review on Goodreads!

“Tell me a story?”
“What kind of story, sweet? A fairy tale?”
“Once upon a time,” he started, amused to the core.
“Oh, I’m good at those. Once upon a time, there was a werekitty. He came to save a vampire from himself.”

That quote really does sum up this sweet and supernaturally packed book.

Told through dual POV’s, this story begins as we meet werebear Tanner who runs the Dead and Breakfast B and B with his silent vampy partner Fallon. Though Tanner has help with a night manager and a cook for the guests, Tanner is exhausted and his bear would love to get some additional sleep during the winter. When Tanner gets Fallon to agree to hire help, he picks the best candidate to interview and ends up hiring him.

Fallon Underwood is one grumpy and gloomy vamp who is also one hell of a horror author. Housed in the top floor of the B and B, Fallon is a silent and stoic partner of the business, allowing Tanner to handle the day to day giving their menagerie of supernatural guests the best treatment the Colorado mountains can offer. When his best friend comes to him begging for help, Fallon gives in though he can’t quite agree with Tanners choice of a werekitty, but at least it’s not a mummy right?

Carter Hughes is the equivalent to Tigger with his kitty bounce and his sometimes very juvenile way of talking and thinking. Though his speech sometimes drove me nuts, Carter is a smart and caring man who just happens to think Fallon is stunning. Not only does he admire the vamps looks but when Carter gets his puma paws on Fallon’s books, he devours all of them in a matter of days and is head over heels for the author.

This was really sweet. I like that Fallon is all “I’m too old. Too set in my ways. I can’t be with a young cat that bounces” and all that denial he has going for him. When in truth, Fallon is drawn to Carter in ways he can’t quite understand. When Carter starts to woo Fallon with thoughtful gifts, Fallon tries to put a stop to it and let Carter down easy even though that’s not what he real wants to do. But with one whispered apology through a closed door and an overhead fanatic review of Fallon’s work by Carter has the vamp finally deciding that denial really is just a river in Egypt he doesn’t want to go down anymore.

These two were as cute as a vamp and a cat can be. I liked the take on Mates between different beings and how each of them handled it. I adored Carter in his shift and how Fallon saw him as well. Though there is trouble with their mating and all the biting (there is A LOT of biting!) that’s going on, neither man knew it what was going on and it does cause a bit of angst in the book. The angst, for me was unnecessary as it made the story drag on when it could have been dealt with sooner with the doctor but, whatever.

The guests at the B and B are so much fun to read about they really added depth to the story. I loved how many different creatures show up and how they B and B caters to their special needs. It really is a fun place to visit while reading this romance and I truly hope that with this being listed as the Dead and Breakfast series that a certain wolf gets a book possible with a certain doctor? Maybe?

Julia Talbot creates an entire paranormal world in the romantic mates story told from the dual POV of cranky-pants vampire, Fallon Underwood, and energetic happy-go-lucky mountain lion shifter, Carter Hughes.

When Fallon's business partner, bear shifter Tanner, suggests they hire a day manager for their business, the Dead and Breakfast B&B in Colorado, Fallon's initially against it. Mostly because he's a set in his ways grump.

When Tanner hires Carter it's a boon to the business. Tanner loves him, the guests love him...and pretty soon Fallon is realizing he loves him too. It doesn't hurt that Carter is a breath of fresh air and loves Fallon's books. However, once the two begin spending all their free time together some possibly dangerous effects occur prompting a freak out on Fallon's part that almost has some pretty dire consequences.

I have a particular fondness for paranormal romances featuring a "mates" storyline and Talbot offers an interesting take on mates, especially as they aren't the same brand of paranormal.

There's a lot packed in here, including a lot of different kinds of paranormals (gorgons, gargoyles, bears, wolves, ghosts, demons, etc.) and it sometimes muddied the flow for me. I found the pacing quite slow in the beginning but it did pick up by the middle and kept me glued until the end. I wish a little more attention had been paid to the relationship and changes, there was so much more I wanted to know about what happens with Carter and Fallon.

On a personal note I found the overuse of endearments to be a bit distracting, but again that's a personal peeve and probably won't be an issue for many, if any, others.

There's definitely enough world building to continue as a series and it will be interesting to see where Talbot takes it all.

From the very start, I was pretty sure that I was going to enjoy the heck out of this book. I mean – what could be more perfect than a title like ‘Fangs and Catnip’ for the romance between a vampire and a werecat? And the setting of an inn where the name reflects the owner’s status – dead? Plus the character descriptions promised the kind of opposites-attract-story that is bound to be entertaining while being loaded with emotions. Add in a twist about the way matings work in this paranormal world and, as far as I am concerned, this novel delivered!

2★'s = it was ok.

This bored me to tears and I think to be fair to the book I should have just given up instead of finishing the story. My schedule is all over the place right now and my reading time is sporadic so I kept going because I partly thought it was me. I realized the more I read it wasn't.

The setup was super cool. I loved the idea of a Bed and Breakfast for all things supernatural but nothing happened in this story and any time something could, even a conversation, Carter would need to shift and nap. The fact that strange things started happening between the two of them and a vamp as old as Fallon didn't even have a thought it could be the mating just added a bit of ridiculous to a story that really didn't need it.

Add to that, when they finally get a clue instead of talking Fallon becomes a martyr and Carter again turns into a cat and goes off for a very long time. This also just went on and on so more nothing happening.

The way the characters spoke to each other started grating on my nerves as well. Carter at times spoke like a cat. All one word answers and thoughts. Even the banter/bickering between Fallon and Tanner at times seemed mean and not cute or funny.

Oh, and one more thing. What kind of cat was Carter? He was referred to as a couple different species, well, I thought they were different species, so I never knew what he was.

So, it for sure had promise and maybe the stories improve as the series goes on. I'll have to check reviews but I'm not in a rush to read on. This was a huge fail and quite a let down for an idea that had promise.

......2.5 Stars........Cute & silly vampire and werecat romance. Set in a B&B for the paranormal which caters to gargoyles, has a gorgon as a housemaid, and a bear shifter as an owner, this lighthearted romance was creative.

The writing was very simplistic, too much so at times, which made for the differentiation of characters based on dialogue difficult. There wasn’t much depth to the characters either, although Tanner the bear and Carter the werecar very likeable. Fallon, Carter’s love interest, was a grumpy vampire who did a total 180 in the book that was difficult to swallow for me.

I liked the first 1/2 more than the first. No angst. Full of fluff. Tons of biting.

**grm**

I must say that this book was good, but a part of it was better done than the others, the one were the author was able to make shifters real. The author described the animal side of the shifters in the book so well, that I could imagine them and could feel almost as if they were real. Carter with all his cat hobbies, lazyness, growls, catnip addiction, love for naps and the way he loved to lick his friends and his lover to groom them (nothing sexual here, just a lot of cuteness in his cat form), was adorable and I wanted to pat and cuddle him. He felt like a real cat, and this was one of the things that made me like the book, not only with Carter, but also with our shy and reclused vampire,Fallon, who loved writing mystery books and to hug his bear best friend, and with all the other characters we saw in this book. Sure I wanted more background, since I think we didn't see an human in this book, and I wanted to know if there were only supernaturals (a lot of them I had never seen in any other m/m book) and if so, it was bcs something had happened to the humans or just bcs in that part of the country there were only supernaturals?

The author seems to have in mind a series, so many questions will probably find their answer in the next books, like for example is the doctor able to talk with the deads? something lets me think he has this ability. Has Tanner, Fallon's bear best friend, found his mate yet? I think he did, bcs in the book we could read something btw the lines... Jami, the young vampire working in the hotel(mansion), was turned when he was so young or just was born a vampire? Tom, the wolf that did have problem with his shifter side, was turned by a lover or after an attack? and why does he seem to be affected by the doctor's presence??

I want to know these things!!! and more.... I'll keep reading this series for sure.

Btw I forgot to add, will Carter's life spawn be as long as Fallon, now that they are mated? I really hope so, sure they all live long lives, if u just think about the fact that Tanner and Fallon have been friends for a century and both are still young and fit, but a vampire is immortal and the author never told something similar for the shifters....well let's hope...

I liked to see so many different "creatures" in this cute and sweet story and also if the sex scenes weren't many, the ones we saw were sure hot and I didn't think the book needed more of them.

4 stars only bcs I wanted more answers and world building.

This book was silly and sweet and low angsty and ... bouncy, of all things. I’ve not read anything like it. Looking forward to the others in the series because the cast of characters populating the Dead and Breakfast dedicated to non-humans is hysterically unique.

Woke up this morning wanting to reread this. Maybe it’s the current crazy state of the world but this happy go lucky book is just what the doctor ordered right now.

The mate drama was a little confusing, I’m still not sure what the issue was, but I love it anyway.

...and I keep rereading this so I’m bouncing it up to five stars. There is something about this joyful book that I absolutely love.

This was just an okay read for me. The cat shifter was very charming, sunny and likable. I never did like Fallon, vampire hero, as much.

I was enjoying this light romance when some other plot happenings occurred that took away from the love story for me.

I would try another book by Talbot again but hope for more couple development.

A bit different than the usual setup for a romance, though I did enjoy the change.

Fallon is a grouchy and solitary vampire except for with his business partner, Tanner. But Tanner needs some help around the Dead and Breakfast which means hiring someone else who could annoy Fallon. They end up hiring Carter, a mountain lion shifter with a bunch of bouncy cat energy and an instant liking to Fallon. Carter sets out to make Fallon at least like him but in the end it is the smallest things that are the most important between the two of them.

The two discover they want more pretty quickly and start up a rather steamy relationship. That part seems easy and it makes you wonder what else will happen- after all the book is barely even half done. That becomes clear when things start happening from Carter and Fallon's relationship. It is changing both of them in very unusual ways which begins to make them question whether or not they can even be together. This is where the story really picks up.

With the relationship happening so fast and everything changing for both men it makes them consider what is most important in their lives. While they both want the love that they have together, it could come at the cost of dreams they have always had. Each man considers what that means for them and how they should approach this mating. It also at times makes them a bit selfish and that is explored as well. It was a sweet story where the issues were all within the relationship itself but then it is worked out as a whole family. Very enjoyable story and a lovely world I look forward to returning to.

This was entirely fun. I haven't laughed so much at a book in many years. Fallon is the only vampire who has made me feel empathy. Even Gail Carriger's magnificent Lord Akeldama, colorful as he is, doesn't stir my heart the way Fal does. Carter is adorable as a big kitty, Tanner a perfect bear. I hope we will see more of Tom, the generous and warm-hearted werewolf as well. This humorous romance is about family in the end: the family you build yourself. Those are the best kind.

I have read and enjoyed Julia Talbot's more traditional fantasies in the past, but I really like this new direction and setting.

Review written for Love Bytes Reviews.

This was a fun one; I really like reading about various combinations of matings but I think shifters and vampires will always be one of my top favorites. Fallon is a vampire that really prefers his solitude and despises any kind of change. When his friend and business partner tells him he needs to hire a manager, Fallon naturally baulks at the idea but cant really deny Tanner the need for more help. Carter is kind of the anti-Fallon; he’s young and energetic and enjoys meeting/interacting with new people. He also knows what he wants out of life and currently at the top of the list is Fallon. While wooing the grumpy Vamp isn’t as easy as Carter would like, its completely worth the effort and the two men find themselves the happiest they’ve ever been. Strange things start happening with them both after mating, however, and it will take more than just a desire to be together to figure out how to fix the problem before things go from bad to worse.

Like I said, this was a fun one. It reminded me a little of the Cereus series books but on a smaller, homier scale that encouraged closer relationships between the characters, which I liked quite a bit. Carter and Fallon were such a good match, in my opinion; complete opposites in a lot of ways they made up for each other’s shortcomings while encouraging personal growth. Fallon calmed Carter down some while Carter made Fallon want to open up and interact with the world outside of his rooms; sometimes subtle and sometimes more blatant, I enjoyed seeing the changes in both men as they deepened their relationship with one another.

The story itself had a good pace to it and even though there were some time skips happening along the way, they weren’t terribly obvious and it never felt as though anything was rushed. There was also a good cast of secondary characters that I liked a lot and that has opened up several possibilities for future books in the series. Add in a little drama/angst to keep things moving along plot wise and I can happily say this was an afternoon well spent reading. If you enjoy paranormal books and enjoy mixed matings, this would definitely be one to consider; I know I’ll certainly read it again. :)

This book is another entry into Dreamspinner Press' "Dreamspun Beyond" line, which I've seen described as "addictive paranormal fluff." Yeah, that about sums it up. This doesn't make it a bad thing, though! Sometimes you want something cozy and enjoyable, that leaves the angst at the door. This is something that Julia Talbot excels at, as I found in the previous book of hers I read and reviewed, Wolfmanny.

The world-building here is minimal, except that we learn that all manner of paranormal beasties, from weres to vampires to demons to gorgons, are rather commonplace. The action takes a B&B called Dead and Breakfast (fortunately the other puns are kept to a minimum), located in the Colorado mountains. Tanner and Fallon co-own the B&B. They are good friends but not lovers, although it is hinted that they may have tried something earlier but found they made better friends than lovers.

I found Carter to be simply adorable. He's smart, industrious, and loves his job. His inner monologue cracked me up, too. Here he's trying to contain his excitement during the job interview:
"Carter Hughes?" Tanner shook hands, warm and firm but not squeezy. "I'm Tanner Weiling."
"Mr. Weiling, pleased to meet you."
No bouncing.
None.
Zero.
Be the antibounce.

This is a story of opposites attracting, and Fallon and Carter are very sweet together. Although there isn't a whole lot of drama in the book, both show character growth through the story. This really helped me feel invested in them, and I teared up a few times reading this. And as an aside, Talbot writes some dang hot sex scenes!

I want to note also that the secondary characters here are just lovely, and really make me look forward to future books in the series: Tanner, an affable werebear; Tom, a werewolf with his own problems but still looks out for Carter; Jami, the erstwhile vampire night auditor. I love the idea of seeing any of these guys in the next book.

Fangs and Catnip is an enjoyable, cozy book with great characters. I recommend this one, particularly for curling up and reading on a cold winter night!

Can't remember how I came across this, but since it's that time of year, it was probably on Amazon. Anyway, snatched this up via KU, and OMG, once I started it, I couldn't stop reading.

This was SO MUCH FUN to read. Welcome to the Dead and Breakfast!

Carter is absolutely adorable, just a were-kitty, bouncy and happy and a little hyper, and just so damn cute. And Fallon, the vamp, the mysterious horror author, whom Carter immediately identifies as his mate, is none too pleased with this bouncy flouncy mountain lion. Vamps mate at a slower pace, I suppose; none of that insta-must-be-mine for them.

There's a bit of drama, and some mystery as to why certain things are happening, and then there's a moment where Fallon is JUST A COMPLETE DICKHEAD, which he immediately regrets as soon as gets his head out of his ass.

There are some very tense moments, some heartbreaking ones, and some tender ones just the same, and I loved the supporting characters who all bring the message of what family means to the table.

Gorgeous book. Loved every minute. Read it!! Meanwhile, I'm running off to get the next book in this series!

I really wanted to love this story. It would have been extremely cute and funny. But the cadence of the writing was clunky. The jokes would just miss the mark. The inner monologues were worth a giggle, but still didn’t quit hit the target. Maybe it’s me and this author 🤷‍♀️ I’m going to try book two.

Also, I saw some comments mentioning no knowing what kind of cat Carter was. They are all different names for the same cat. Puma/mountain Lion/cougar are the same cat. Panther and catamount too. I’m sure each region has a different term for them. Perhaps she was just trying to cover bases. Idk. But sticking with one would’ve been a safer bet. The writing was confusing enough.

B and B for everyone

This was mostly a cute fated mates story between a vampire and a kitty who were apparently the first cross species fated mates.

I think.

I loved Carter, but man I did not like the vamp and honestly after what he did to the kitty, the vamp did not deserve his HEA. That wasn't just a "I must push you away for your sake" that was emotional abuse. I mean look at what Carter needed to do to survive mentally. I was hoping they would not end up together, but this was fated mates so there was no chance of that.

I liked the first half better than the second. Getting to know the various characters who help run a paranormal B&B was fun. Also, the mountain lion shifter Carter is just too adorable. However, I'm not really sure what happened in the second half of the story - the plot just seemed to lose it's way.

I greatly enjoyed this book – it had me laughing, chuckling and chortling the entire way through. It had a great blend of sweetness, a tiny bit of uncertainty and a fun cast of characters. For me, this is a total decompress, tune out the world, curl up in my fuzzy blanket and read kinda book. I’m NOT looking for serious heart to hearts, I want mindless shifter fun. Julia Talbot's Dead and Breakfast #1 give that in spades.

OMG! I just realized that Carter is a cougar/puma and his name starts with a “C”. Connor in the Sanctuary series by BA Tortuga is a bobcat and HIS name starts with a “C”. “C” for cat! On purpose, dear authors? Fun!

Carter is a mountain lion and his degree is in Hospitality. He would love to work at the Dead and Breakfast Inn even though it’s not a more traditional hotel in a big city. Tanner (bear shifter) co-owns the Dead and Breakfast with Fallon (a vampire). They have a long-standing friendship: Fallon doesn’t like change and he wants to be left alone in his gabled loft. Tanner runs the D&B needs help, especially during the winter months when his bear need to hibernate. They hire Carter, with some reluctance on Fallon’s part. Until he starts to get to know the kitty.

The relationship dance is partially why I enjoyed this story so much -too many shifter books end up in an instantaneous mashing of lips and shouted cries of “mine!”, and there’s no underlying foundation of compatibility beyond sex. I liked how the author built a relationship between the vampire and cat, and continued to build it. Carter worked on woo-ing Fallon only as a kitty shifter could.

I also liked the underlying cause for the slight angst that caused a good deal of upset and unhappiness (trying not to give spoilers here). It was refreshingly different and very plot appropriate. How everyone pulled together to help Fallon and Carter was so sweet, and a great way to display character traits.

Speaking of characters, D&B has a great line-up: including Tanner the bear shifter, there is a Gorgon on cleaning staff, another vampire on night shift, a newly turned werewolf, and a gargoyle that makes an appearance. I love how all the staff and guests have quirks unique to them.

Ultimately, this is light, quirky, and fun. Julia Talbot's books are what I turn to when I need some serious mental “zone-out” time, complete with blankets and hot cocoa. Or wine. Sometimes I need serious zoning out.

It has great potential but:
At least 1/3 of the book consist solely of these words: "Seriously","really"and "honestly"
The dialogues are unnatural and all characters use the same speech pattern which includes over using "seriously" and "really"
Poor editing sometimes leads to confusion about who said what or who did what.
There are typos and mixed up names leading to sentences like: "Carter pulled his lips against Carter's throat."
The characters are not believable due to too much fluctuations in their personalities.
Words like Yay are used in summary like descriptions, i.e. when no dialogue or though is involved.

This was a truly wonderful read that starts a new series with a bang. Between the adorable and caring Carter, the broody but silly Fallon, and a host of amazing staff and guests at the Dead and Breakfast, I didn’t want to put this down—while reading it, or after.

Carter’s enthusiasm to serve all kinds of non-humans was catching, and I loved seeing a vibrant range of species and the little quirks associated with them. I really felt like I got to see the author’s entire world through this one small corner. Carter’s growing interest and love in Fallon is a joy, and I loved the sweet moments of relationship building threaded throughout the entire book. Even Fallon’s cautious tries at returning Carter’s affections are too adorable to bear.

And speaking of bears, Tanner, Fallon’s more active partner in the Dead and Breakfast, is a star all by himself. I really want to have him as a friend, as he supports both characters in their journey together whilst still looking after a busy B&B, with guests that had unusual needs.

The author threaded a couple of different sub-plots throughout the novel, and each getting their own time in the sun, whilst still bringing something important to the overall plot of Carter and Fallon’s relationship. By the end of the book, I really felt like one of the family at this great B&B. It’s such a disappointment that a place like that doesn’t exist.

Really, this felt like one of the most natural growing stories I’ve read in a while. The whole book came alive, and I’m torn on which of the amazing secondary characters I want to see in their own tale next. Whoever it is, I’ll be picking it up the second it’s available!

This is a different take on supernatural interspecies mating.
I liked the quirky characters at the B&B - from Fallon, the moody writer (vampire); Tanner co-owner (Bear) and Glenda (Gorgon). Tanner needs a day manager to help take on some of the day to day managerial duties, (since Fallon, co-owner has little interest in helping). Carter, a werecat, applies and gets the job. Carter is friendly, chatty, with a sunny disposition – all the things Fallon is not. But Carter ‘weres’ Fallon down (I couldn’t resist☺) and they fall in love.
It was interesting the way Fallon and Carter’s relationship progressed; especially the way they took on each other’s traits – Carter developing photosensitivity, while Fallon had a vague craving for meat. However, the two men have to find a way to adjust to their mating changes or they will slowly die. With the help of a B&B staff, a few guests and a local doctor, the two men figure out a way to adjust to each other and live happily together.
There is a bit of heartache when Fallon thinks he’s helping by pushing Carter away. As a result, Carter becomes feral and Fallon has to find a way to bring him back.
I enjoyed the story, especially the twist on the fated mates trope.
I hope there will be stories for some of the other characters, like Tanner or Dan (wolf, guest).

Dorian Bane does a terrific job of giving every “unique” character in this funny story an equally “unique” voice. He’s definitely got the “tongue in cheek” vibe down and he mirrors the light hearted nature of the story perfectly.

He excels at his dialog and is solid on the non-dialog parts. This is definitely the way to appreciate this story and is a great way to spend a weekend!

There really is a lot going on here and Fallon was a total jerk to poor Tanner who is just trying his best and sure he's going to get fired. But there are other vamps including the old woman, there is a guy who got bitten and is trying to deal with how to become a werewolf, the psychologist, the grumpy bear best friend/manager (who I never really did get a handle on), so I found there was just a LOT going on. Maybe because it's obviously the set-up for a series there is a lot to be introduced at once. I also thought Fallon went from "stay away from me" to "want you now" pretty damn quick and I never quite understood what their problem was medically. So a bit of confusion but I still enjoyed it on the whole, kept me reading and I'd come back for me.

I really enjoyed this story. Unlike a lot of shifter/vampire books where the world is full of angst and difficulties, this was so different.
A bed and breakfast place, run for paranormals of all types, owned by a Vampire and a Bear shifter. When a cat shifter is hired as a new manager, he takes an instant shine to Fallon, the Vampire author who lives upstairs.
Fallon is centuries old and needs a while to decide if he wants to commit fully to a relationship with Carter, which leaves the cat-shifter in a very bad place. But with friends who care, Fallon makes better choices and by the end, they are very happily together.
This was just so much fun, very little angst and totally enjoyable. I am sure this will be a cheer-me-up book.
