I was very hesitant to start this because it’s not a genre I typically reach for. However, I went and bought it because it was on sale at my local bookstore. I couldn’t help myself. Surprisingly, I actually liked it well enough. I would describe it as a fantasy galactic magical girl series with Greek lore being its foundation. If that’s your thing, then I would recommend this series.
We begin in this volume being introduced to Shoko, a middle school girl who is desperate to find out what happened to her sister Kyoko who was given an elite scholarship from a secret organization. In addition, Shoko has been having these strange nightmares every night. One day, she discovers the truth behind her sister’s absence which is Kyoko went to become a Saintia. Shoko begins to realize the truth of her nightmares and the larger galactic battle her sister is fighting. Now, from my understanding, this is a spin-off of the original Saint Seiya series, with this one having a female cast and saints. The general premise is that there are Saints who follow the war goddess Athena in her mission to fight evil beings.
There are a few things I like so far. The theme of overcoming fate is interesting, especially since Shoko is a very headstrong girl. I find her to be a likable protagonist who I have no problem rooting for. In addition, her bond with her sister is very sweet.
Now some of the things I dislike. So far, the characters outside of Shoko feel one-dimensional and flat. Saori who is the human carnation of Athena is supposed to be having this internal struggle, but I don’t believe it. However, I will give this series time to flesh out the characters. Also, some of the plot elements and lore is sometimes a bit extra and over the top. It’s not a terrible thing, but it just hasn’t clicked yet. This is probably because this isn’t my favorite genre but it’s fine so far.
Overall, I am curious to see where this series goes and I hope I can enjoy reading the rest. I have the first five volumes, so we shall see.
