Magic is dying. And I’m the only one who can stop it.
Human. Weak. Sick. That’s what I’ve been told I am all my life. But when magic hunters attack the castle where I’ve been kept hidden since birth, I discover my whole world is built on lies.
Because the hunters are after me.
Running for my life, I’m rescued by four dangerously handsome gargoyle shifters. They say they’re here to save me…but maybe they only want to save themselves.
Because, as it turns out, I’m not merely human. I am a Protector of Magic—if I die, magic will vanish from the world. And my four winged guardians will turn to stone forever.
Wings of Stone is the first book in a new reverse harem urban fantasy series full of romance, danger, and magic.

It was quite boring and i found the main character irritable. But the world building has a lot of potential and i found the description of the city beautiful. Not sure if i want to give the next book a chance, though.
An exciting fantasy that leaves you begging for more! Sexy shifters, kick-butt woman and full of action and fun what’s not to love! I enjoyed the fast pace of the story I couldn’t put it down! The characters were entertaining to read and I can’t wait to discover more about them. I voluntarily reviewed an arc from the author.
When I started this book I had high expectations for it. Mostly because the beginning was rather promising. I liked the mystery behind Rowena's "illness", even though I did wonder why she never questioned the way she was treated. I was intrigued by the world itself and the characters looked interesting. So, the storyline itself was good and the plot had a few nice turns now and then and despite the fact that everything was happening at a very fast pace, I was having a grand time. But the farther I went, the less of a good time I was having. At first it were little things - I often did not agree with the ways Rowena acted, she seemed less and less mature the more I get to know her. I honestly do not understand why she would care about people that lied to her since she was a baby, who kept her basically in a cage (for no good reason really) and who poisoned her for 22 years. They got into trouble? Well, fuck them. Then there was the fact that I absolutely did not feel any sort of connection between Ro and the guys. They didn't even act like friends, more like acquaintances. Their "relationship", if you can call it that, felt hollow. Then there was Sebastian, who's supposed to represent the bad guy, but fell kind of short. He was too stereotypically sleazy and stupid, in my opinion. The "hunters" weren't much better. I mean, at the end, they got rid of the body but not the murder weapon? That's just plain stupid. No wonder they got arrested right afterwards.
All in all, I think it was a good idea. Great start of the story, too, followed by a few interesting turns here and there, but with not so fortunate second half of the book. As I said, I had high expectations and was left feeling disappointed. It's....unlikely that I will read any follow ups.
Interesting story, but at least at the moment this feels like neither a RH or a romance ...
Interesting story, but at least at the moment this feels like neither a RH or a romance ... While this felt like an interesting story, Sweet intelligent young woman, locked away beyond sheltered and rather neglected , but is willing and eager to take charge of her life when she learns she’s been lied to and NEEDS things to change.... No, my problem isn’t the story per say as soo much calling this a romance or a RH... I started to skip around just to see how long it would be before any chemistry and or interest started to kick between Rowena and the 1st males/guardians/ gargoyles she meets, well for the most part her interest in Marcus when she 1st meets him was the most interest I saw in any of them sexually .... Ok, one I don’t agree w/a RH being a one .p.o.v (point of view ) You lose too much to never really know what that many others are thinking . ... But after skipping around I final,to skipped to the end and was very dismayed at what I saw or didn’t see.... Aaaaaaaaaaa, maybe this could be a slow burn , but someone needs to tell the MC’s 1st.... The heroine survives “faking” her death at the end,no spoiling intended, and why some were upset at what she’d had to do, there were NO hugs or kisses or any one that males clutching her to their chest begging her not to w/anger or fear because they were afraid of losing her because they were already fearing a life w/out her,.... No, nothing happened that said any emotional or romantic bonds were even anywhere on the horizon... No any and all fears seemed to stem from the fact that the loss of her meant the loss of magic... She seemed to want to get at least slightly excited over one but she said that in her head he wouldn’t want that soo she didn’t .... Sooo burn ? There isn’t even a fire even remotely being thought about it felt... A box full of damp matches is what I found here.... Ironically I just gave a RH I came across 3 stars because the h became some out of control , sometimes pervy ( hey, when the guy is unconscious and you’re trying to heal him of poison, horny or not there’s no reason to be finding excuses to touch and examine or drool over his “package” in between mating w/two others) the 1st part got soo lost in sex It drowned was a pretty decent story when lil miss nympho finally calmed down... But this goes to the other extreme, at least at the moment this seems all about protecting magic and surviving and getting around the hunters, and that’s all fine and good but if your gonna call it a romance it should be one and as much as I looked I didn’t see it ... While the guys all seemed find of her, ( Silas and Sebastian not really with standing ) I never really saw anything ... A slow burn is good n But first you need to at least start the fire....
A great start to a brand new series from Jenna Wolfhart. Wings of Stone is set in the same world as the Bone Coven Chronicles but starts after the end of that series. Wings if Stone is also a RH book, which seeing as I'm a massive fan of that genre is a big bonus for me.
I thought that the book started of really well, I actually found it easier to get straight into than I did Witch's Curse, book one of the Bone Coven Chronicles. I immediately liked Rowena, the MC, and wanted to know what was going on with her. I really enjoyed the whole story and the twists and the turns. The various characters were well written and I liked pretty much all of them for different reasons. I thought the ending was a good twist and am really looking forward to reading the next book in the series. This was a five star read for me.
Rowena is raised among shadow witches. As a baby she was cursed and she’s still sickly. But there is something Rowena doesn’t know. Something that has been kept a secret from her all her life. And she’s about to find out.
Oh, this was good. Page-turner-ish. Eyes-glued-to-my-kindle-ish. Sometimes life makes you stop reading, but I really didn’t want to stop :). It was exciting! A whole lot of fantasy, a little mythology, lots of magic, suspense, attraction, twists: this book has it all.
Luckily, no cliff-hanger! No loose ends. It does become clear that the future will hold more battles to fight, more adventures. Yay!
I received a complimentary copy of this book and voluntarily posted an honest review.
To put it simple, I loved this book. It turns out that the sickly week heroine is not that week, and she has a couple well chiseled friends to help her on her way. The story is fast paced, and actually I was wondering till the end about certain characters, on which side are they, so the curiosity is held up from the beginning till the end. I liked all characters, I couldn't say which one the best, but each and every one of them has something which helps you to like them. The whole thing that you have gargoyle shifters makes it even more catching to me. I haven't met too many gargoyle shifters yet and I have to say, I like them. A lot.
I received the book as an ARC for an honest review.
This is the first book in a new series, Protectors of Magic. I read Ms. Wolfhart’s Bone Coven Chronicles series which I enjoyed very much, and I was excited to learn she was writing a new series. This new one is slightly different than that series as it is a reverse harem, but it is no less great. I confess I’m not a huge fan of reverse harem, but as I love this author’s writing, I will follow where she takes me. However, in case you are reading this specifically for the RH, be aware ahead of time that the romance hasn’t started much yet in this installment. Based on events in this book, it’s definitely in the future. As always, this book features the author’s great writing, interesting characters, and intriguing plot. I really like that this is a gargoyle shifter series, because while gargoyles aren’t my favorite, not much has been done with this theme, and I like something different once in a while. The book did suffer a teeny, tiny bit from first book syndrome but not enough to lessen my enjoyment. Great series starter, and I am looking forward to the next one. Highly recommend! Thanks to the author for the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.
Rowena has spent her life sequestered away like a fairy tale princess in the highest tower. Very rarely is she allowed out and she spends her meals alone in her room with only the company of stone statues in the form of gargoyles. Learning the truth of her heritage should open possibilities for Rowena but yet it forces her into yet another seclusion. Rowena needs to learn how to harness her magic, or magic as everyone knows it will crumble.
I loved this book! I haven’t read many books that have gargoyles in it and I am so glad this one was so well written.
You get so much information in this book. But not much else. I think this book is the one in the series to get the ball rolling. Hopefully we will get more in the others to come.
This was well written. The characters have depth. And I feel more things are to come and others will unravel.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to read it. I’m excited to see what is to come.
I like Ro and Tess and the shifters. Silas is a deep thinker, Jasper is sweet. I don't know much about Eli yet or Marcus. Noooooo sex is great for character development imo. Too often, books of this genre rush into sex with no rhyme or reason at th expense of character development. Book 2 is next. Happy reading!
Bizarre story. Gargoyle shifters that turn to stone. That's new.
Her guardians believing it was best to keep Rowena confined and mostly isolated for 'protection' made no sense.
I found Marcus character to be annoying. He seems to be mocking everything. No chemistry between the guys and her at all other then ogling at Jasper shirtless...
The story comes off lacking a lot. Characters aren't engaging and the story is too weird.
Writing was good and plot was different except the heroine was such a weak demigod. I was waiting and waiting for the h to show her power but all I got is how she was always almost getting beaten and then imprisoned then shot then rescued by the hot gargoyles.
No development on the h power more of a wishy washy that the h hoped she can use her power. Out of the whole book the h only showed somewhat of a power teaser twice. Really...mostly repetitive plot. The h being kept in a castle then kept in another castle then imprisoned. A lot of negatives.
It's like the author decided to give the reader a teaser of the h may or may not have a power. Just the repetitive dialogue of the h feeling helpless throughout. Just annoying. Gave up at 80% cause the h was still weak and powerless. I mean she was supposed to get this weapon to help her get her power but all I get is the h getting shot at and captured.
Not really realistic that all the demigod was killed off and that the h was the last one. Disappointed reader. This book had potential but not enough characters development especially the h. If you don't mind reading about a weak and powerless heroine, this might be your book. Only had one passionate kissing scene and the rest was the self dialogues of the h saying how the gargoyles were hot. No romance really. Two stars for a good imaginative writing but weak execution.
This first book in a slow burn reverse harem romance series is PG so far. It's about a girl who has grown up in a room, away from the rest of the witches, in a shadow witch castle. Eventually she makes her way 'free' and that ends up having a bunch of ramifications. The book is not only about her finding out who she really is but also about saving the shadow witch coven and magic in general, at least for the time being. Character development has been slow for everyone except our main character Ro who is understandably like a new born deer at this point. She doesn't know anything about herself or a while lot about other stuff she couldn't read in books so we see some development for her which I appreciate because who is a total weakling and then just knows how too do stuff, right?! The book could be a standalone if the reader so chooses not to continue but it is left side open for the series. The plot progression goes at a comfortable pace as well in that it's not too fast nor too slow. There is no sex in this first book but rather has Ro crushing on the gargoyles. Mild violence and very mild profanity. All in all, I found it entertaining
This was just an ok read for me. This was too much like another RH I read recently and it left me feeling underwhelmed. Take Rowena (Ro for short) is living her life locked in a Tower...for 22 years. By an Evil Shadow Witch Queen who only let's her out of her room for an hour a day. One day a MAN comes to the castle and thats where all the "fun" begins. Rowen thinks she is some fragile human who needs all kinds of medicine and rest to survive. But really she takes an elixir that has blocked her magic for 22 years. She leaves her castle and it disappears. She's whisked away by a gargoyle shifter to an abandoned and rundown gargoyle town. Where they try to find out who she is and why people want her dead. Insert your typical RH guys. Intelligent book nerd-Eli Jokester of the bunch -Marcus Nice approachable guy- Jasper Broody sensitive loner - Silas And of course the reigning double canoe- Sébastien
From there we find out Rowen is the special snowflake we all know she is going to end up being. Grand daughter if a Goddess of course. The fate of the magical world in her very incapable hands.
I just couldn't get into this book. It wasn't bad.. it just wasn't good enough for me to keep reading on past this book.
Rowena has lived locked away in the Shadow Witch's castle for as long as she can remember. She's so sick that she can barely leave her room, only getting a small walk in every day. One day, that walk changes her life. A stranger visits the castle and things are never the same again. Now she's running for her life, learning everything she's ever been told was a lie. What happens when the people who have been lying to you are the ones you have to rely on to help save you?
I really really enjoyed this first book. Rowena, while believed to be sick and frail, is a really kickass heroine. She's brave and determined and she cares so much for others. Even when they don't deserve it. The four guardians in this book are just oh so yummy. I think broody Silas is my favorite though. He's just misunderstood and we all love an underdog right?
While we don't have much of a romantic aspect happening in this book, you can see the start of things. There was plenty of other stuff going on to keep you occupied anyway. A lot of secrets, lies and action. A great set up for this series! I can't wait for the next one and I'm so glad it's already up for preorder!
This book had so much potential to do well but the mish mash of tenses, martyr complex mary sue heroine who is actually quite useless while also supposedly being all powerful, rampant plot holes and underdeveloped world building had me hanging my head in disappointment.
According to greek Mythology while Hecate is the goddess of witchcraft and Circe is a minor goddess of magic they aren't related to each other. Circe is the daughter of the Titan Helios, the sun god and Perse, a sea nymph. So it isn't possible for Rowena to be the daughter of Circe and granddaughter of Hecate. Let's say however, that since the writer is taking creative liberties and this is possible, according to the book Hecate is the goddess who had children with human men and Circe is one of these children. That would make Circe, not Rowena the demigoddess, unless of course Rowena's father is a God.
I feel like this series would benefit from more research.
So much potential in this storyline, enough I am tempted to read on despite my headache from constant eye-rolls from Rowena's blind, irrational mindset to throw herself into situations that could kill not just her, but all magic, condemning the gargoyles to their stone form (I debated this as a spoiler, but the consequence is discussed early in the story with the gargoyles losing their human form because of the loss of magic). Silly choices and obvious traps made Wings of Stone an intriguing, yet frustrating story line...I suspect the series will get better with each book as the character grows (fingers crossed).
A wild and compelling story of magic and shifters! Rowena is held as a virtual prisoner in the shadow witch castle! When she escapes the castle with the help of a Gargoyle shifter they are pursued by her guardians! The two statues in her room were also Gargoyles! Determined to help Rowena and protect her they take her to their island home! Fantastic world building is the mainstay of this story! The story is almost nonstop action and has only a few weak points. The characters are life like and charming in their own ways! Each have strength and weakness in equal measure!
This book was okay. The story line was interesting but there just wasn’t enough character and relationship development. Rowena has essentially been locked in a room for 22 years but other than being physically weak it doesn’t seem like it really affected her. There are 4 gargoyle shifters that save her but other than their names we really know nothing about them. There is absolutely no relationship development at all between Rowena and the shifters other than Tessa calling them hers. This book left me wanting so much more. Oh and the witch hunters didn’t seem very intelligent.
This was my first time reading a Jenna Wolfhart book. The story was a pretty good story of Rowena finding out she is the protector of all remaining magic. Flanked by gargoyle guards, she discovers her powers, freeing witches from hunters. The story itself was a unique, entertaining read. However, Rowena is a bit too much like Bella of the Twilight series. I prefer strong female characters, so this book would appeal to younger readers. To be fair, the story was very good, so I will be purchasing next in series in hopes of character development.
The Bad: This was a really Nice story But it was one of those that are too Slow Burn for me. The Good: This book, just from the 22 yr old heroine‘s POV, did an excellent job of world building/descriptions and character development/insight of herself as well as those men and women who are her adopted family, her friends, her enemies, and her future/potential love interests. Most Interesting: This heroine’s story/author’s ideas have me hooked and curious enough to get the next book.
Rowena has been told that she is really sick. And that's why she needs to be hidden away and only let out for an hour at a time. She overhears something that changes everything and she knows she needs to et away. Even if that means trusting the winged men who suddenly start appearing.
The actual story wasn't bad. Magic is dying with some trying to save it and others trying to eradicate it. But it just didn't come together. Rowena was annoying, naive one minute and everyone following her the next...just made no sense. The guys were meh and there wasn't much relationship development.
I have inconsistent story lines This one has lot of them 1. What is ro's power??.(if we go by mithology she should have power over magic itself, meaning she can do anything that can be done with magic) 2. How is that humans can able to over come witches when they are in their full power with just pistol and knife ? 3. Why would Sebastian betray his own kind? 4. What is use of the sword? 5. Where are the faes? 6. Where is Hecta? 7. Where are the weapons that killed other guardians
These are some of the inconsistent. And their are lot more which makes this book unreadable
Wow, I was absolutely captivated by it! Jenna keeps you on the edge of your seat right from the beginning, leaving you wondering about the mysterious illness and the fate of the relationships. This book is a rollercoaster of emotions, with moments of sadness, joy, and intense anticipation. You'll be guessing and second-guessing throughout the entire story. I never once thought "that was predictable" or "I saw that coming." It's a thrilling read, and I can't wait for the next one!
The storyline is nice but I felt like some parts dragged out while some others that needed the extra attention were fast paced. I like the MC she is strong, brave and selfless. Her gargoyles need to get a clue. They are so wishy washy and wanted to slap jasper. All in all it was a nice book... well read next in series just because there are some things unsaid in the book and I want to see how they play out by the author...
I loved this take on witches, shifters, and magic. I enjoyed that Ro has fire inside her despite her past. My favorite thing though, is that she doesn't all of the sudden become super strong and powerful. She is fighting to gain strength and learn to battle. She is fighting to learn magic. Lastly, she fighting for herself and her own independence, not relying on others to take care of her.
I feel like it’s very early in the series.. I don’t know much about the characters or their personalities... but I learned enough to want to read the next book and see if the blanks start to fill in! I was frustrated and intrigued at the same time so it definitely pulls you in. I’ll definitely read the second! Oh and of course the guardians are super sexy!
I'm not sure how I feel about this book. It was ok. It's one of those books that you can easily put down to read another book or run errands. To me, the characters felt very one dimensional so I had a hard time connecting to them and ultimately the story.
Plus side, very few grammatical errors or typos. I'll probably give the second book a chance with kindle unlimited.
