When Eliza Barnes said ‘I do’ to her husband all those years ago, she thought that they’d be together forever. Instead, he’s flown to Abu Dhabi to start a new life, and she’s returning to the little seaside town of Lavender Bay.
It’s finally time to chase the dreams she’s put on hold for so long, whipping up luxury bath products and organic soaps using local ingredients. Of course, she didn’t expect to meet local farmer, Jack Gilbert, or for him to be quite so gorgeous!
So when her husband turns up, she knows she must decide between the man she knows everything about and the man who makes her heart race in ways she’d never imagined – before it’s too late…
Perfect for fans of Trisha Ashley, Rachael Lucas and Hilary Boyd.
Sarah Bennett has been reading for as long as she can remember. Raised in a family of bookworms, her love affair with books of all genres has culminated in the ultimate Happy Ever After – getting to write her own stories to share with others.
Born and raised in a military family, she is happily married to her own Officer (who is sometimes even A Gentleman). Home is wherever he lays his hat, and life has taught them both that the best family is the one you create from friends as well as relatives.
When not reading or writing, Sarah is a devotee of afternoon naps and sailing the high seas, but only on vessels large enough to accommodate a casino and a choice of restaurants.
In the second story of the Lavender Bay trilogy, we follow Eliza who returns home after leaving her husband. After not following her dreams because she was always doing what her husband wanted, she finally has the opportunity to make her life her own. At first she works at her parents pub, The Siren, to make some money and help out her family. Soon though, she comes up with a plan to make her happy. In the meantime, she visits the local lavender farm to buy some lavender for her business but makes no headway as the farmer is rude to her. As soon as this occurrence ends, Jack (the farmer) regrets his attitude. As all things happens, they soon find themselves attracted to each other but each comes with baggage. Will they be able to overcome these obstacles?
I wanted a cute summer read and that's what I got. All the characters were relatable, sweet, and, basically, made me want to live at Lavender Bay:)
*Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Sometimes a book doesn’t work for you at a certain time and this was the case with me and Summer at Lavender Bay when it first came out. No idea why, could have been anything from the day of the week ending in y, to a full moon, chocolate deprivation or my shitty hormones, who knows but after loving Sarah Bennett’s Bluebell Castle series, I decided to try again.
It’s always the quiet ones!”
Six feet plus of buff single dad (or in this case uncle) who is also a farmer? What the hell was wrong with me first time around? Needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed Eliza and Jack together despite wanting to chuck Eliza in the sea at one point, I adored Jack’s nephew, Noah and once again Rachel Bavidge did a top-notch job of bringing this story to life.
I really loved Spring at Lavender Bay, which was book one in this series. I was excited to get going with book two and it was as good as id hoped. That said this book can be read as a standalone, but you will want to start at the beginning to get to know the charactors and fall in love with Lavender Bay. In this book we focus on Eliza Barnes, Eliza and her husband Martin are at the airport about to start their new life in Abu Dhabi after Martin has taken a job there for a few years. Eliza is reluctant to go and when he tells her he will be flying in business class while she is in normal class, Eliza finally realises she cant go through with it and tells him shes not happy and doesnt want to go with him, she instead is moving back to lavender bay. He lets her go vowing to her he will not stop her. My only gripe with this was, why didnt she speak up before and not leave it until last minute at the airport. But I love Eliza so shes forgiven. As we follow Eliza back to Lavender Bay to sort her life out, she decided to make some clothes after getting a compliment about something she was wearing and also decides to make bath and body products using Lavender from the local farm. Enter handsome Jack, who is instantly likeable, he owns the farm and walks into Eliza’s life just when she needs it. He has his own baggage but can they work through it and make a go of things or will Martin return and want his wife back!?. It was great to be back in Lavender Bay and read more about Eliza’s story aswell as being back with Libby, Beth, Sam and the wonderful Eleanor’s Emporium. Sarah Bennett always keeps me entertained from the very first page, I am so glad to be back in the Bay as its always filled with such descripitive surroundings and the whole bay reminds me of a fairytale, I love getting lost in this series. I am looking forward to book three to find out more about Libby’s life.
I was really looking forward to this second book in the series and this story was brilliant from the first page so much better than I expected. You are hooked from the first page and you want to keep going to see what happens. It's full of heartbreak, romance and finding what is best for you and doing what you are truly happy with. You want to laugh at times as well just simply fantastic and can't recommend you to read it enough as so good. Eliza is married to the person of her dreams and they are about to move to Abu Dhabi with his job they get to the airport and she asks him a question and things start to change and she turns and says to him she isn't happy and she's not going with him and moving back to lavender bay. Once she returns to lavender bay she learns she wasn't happy in her marriage at all and she starts learning to be happy and starts making luxury bath products and wants to use local ingredients. She goes to the local lavender farm and when she sees Jack the owner her heart skips a beat which has never happened before. He's got baggage and can they work through that to be happy together or when her husband comes back can she learn what has made her happy and stay with that or just go back to her ex. Lots of decisions to make and can she make the right ones. Worth far more than the five stars I have given this book.
This is the part 2 of the Lavender Bay series but I haven't read the part 1. Fortunately not reading the part 1 was not a problem to understand what was going on. You can read this book as a standalone which is good. I really enjoyed this book. And can't wait for part 3 of the series! The only thing I didn't really understand in this book is how fast Martin, the husband of Libby is forgotten. It's almost like Eliza was not married (or at least separated) and if she was single. But other than that, I found this romance very cute and I liked the fact that it takes place around a place where lavender is growing, it gives the story a particular summery scent. By the way, I find the cover very lovely! When you look at it, you immediately think "summer", "sun", "happiness". And it summarize pretty much the book! I recommend it!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book but was about quarter of the way through when I discovered it was the second book in a series. The author assured me that each book can be read as a stand alone title and she was right. Loved the setting and the gentle developing romance between Eliza and Jack plus the seaside setting was perfect. A lovely book to loose yourself in and I will certainly be going back to read the first book in the series. Thank you to Netgalley and the author for the chance to read this title in exchange for a honest review.
I enjoyed this 2nd book in the series. It was fun to really get to know Eliza since she didn't play as big a part in book 1. Jack and Noah make a great package for Eliza.
Eliza’s story is next, one of the three best friends, all christened Elizabeth but decided when meeting to grab names for themselves, she along with Beth and Libby are all now back in Lavender Bay, although it took Eliza some time to get there. Her marriage has fallen apart, and she’s not been happy for years, but it took Martin’s callous disregard of her wishes as he gaslighted her into “seeing” things his way that finally cracked things wide open, and the departures gate at the airport for a three year stint in Abu Dhabi is the line in the sand that she won’t cross. Returning home to Lavender Bay with her best friends, in her room above the family’s pub, Eliza is at loose ends and unsure of her next step, just knowing that she wants to be excited for her next move.
Jack Gilbert came to Lavender Bay as a child, his parents wishing for a ‘simpler life’ and they’ve built their lavender farm into a growing concern. But after his father’s death, and then his older brother being killed by a drunk driver, he’s now cocooned himself into a self-imposed prison of sorts, determined to make up for everything to Noah, his young nephew, and keep hurt and angst from the door. He’s prickly and anti-social, and perhaps too wrapped up in his own superhero complex to actually allow the natural ebb and flow of life’s challenges to approach without kicking out at them, but he’s got a heart of gold. When Eliza, with an idea to use her ‘crafty skills’ and her new idea for a “With Love from Lavender Bay” line of products (that her best friend Beth has already agreed to sell in her emporium) she’s popped up the hill to Gilbert’s farm, hoping to discuss a potential sale of lavender oil for use in candles and soaps. Of course, Jack is his usual grumpy bear self and Eliza, not being the most bold or brash person to start with, heads off.
Oh these two are adorable together, and as Eliza gains confidence in her own idea for a business, and things start to sell, she also starts to find her own footing for her own life, and the ability to demand a divorce from Martin (who arrives to guilt her back into his life) as she is quietly showing Jack that isolating himself, his mother and little Noah isn’t healthy or necessary, and that once you’ve been accepted into this little ‘family’ of people, you’re in. From taking over the help with the harvest to the moments with Noah, Eliza has wormed her way into Jack’s heart, despite his ability to turn every situation into worst case scenario and take instant offense at even offhanded comments. It will take not just Eliza, but the whole village to help bring Jack awareness of the potential and pleasure of ‘letting people in”, and with a visitor to town in Colin, now appearing to become more involved in the people and the town with his partnering with Sam in the proposed restaurant in the old skittles lanes under the pub, the possibility for more growth for both Jack and Eliza is strong, while we’ve still got more to look forward to in this village. A lovely read, heartfelt and sweet, that can be read out of order – it’s only going to make you want to meet the people and the town in the first.
I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
3.5 Stars. I was really looking forward to this second book in the series, but was not as excited as I had hoped. The beginning sets up the story so we know who the couple will be that the story revolves around. Eliza is married to Martin, her high school boyfriend. They are about to move to Abu Dhabi for his job when she realizes that he does not care what she thinks or wants. His job, his desires and his dreams are all that matters. When she asks him a question and his answer is not what she needs to hear, she tells him she isn't happy and she's not going with him. She leaves the airport and heads back to Lavender Bay. Once she is back home, she realizes that she has been very unhappy and wants to see what will make her happy. When she goes to the local lavender farm to see if she can buy lavender to start a soap making business, she meets the owner, Jack. He is not happy that this person is wandering around his working farm. He is rather rude to her, but both of them feel something. Jack has baggage and he is not sure he is ready for a relationship. Eliza has her own baggage and is in the same boat. Can they work through everything to be happy together. As the story progressed, I began to get invested. There are some blips along the way that they need to work through that gives the story some angst, but overall, this is a feel good, second chance romance.
This story is full of heartbreak, romance and finding what is best for you and doing what you are truly happy with. You want to laugh at times as well as reach out and shake someone. Along the way the characters from the first book are there and once again step up to help one another when in need. I enjoyed seeing how Sam and Eliza's father has dealt with his illness and is trying to give his kids more autonomy at the bar. The trio of ladies (Eliza, Beth and Libby) are still there supporting, teasing and loving one another. I enjoyed my second trip to Lavender Bay and based on what happened in this book, I am ready for Libby's story in the next outing at Lavender Bay. The publisher, HQ Digital, provided me with a copy of this book to read. The opinions stated are my own.
Having thoroughly enjoyed book one to this three part book series, I could not wait to lose myself in book two which is Eliza story and also where we get to meet Farmer Jack.
Well I absolutely loved it, thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Eliza more & meet Jack, plus seeing the chemistry & interaction between them.
Reading this story just made me want to be there, to be one of the characters, just loved the friendships and experiencing how the community comes together to help each other. I'd love to live in Lavender Bay & be involved in all that.
I'm loved this series so much that I'm going to start book three next, I need to be back in Lavender Bay already.
A lovely warm tale of Eliza. A Loveless marriage, a tragic death, a bereaved boy and a chocolate Labrador combine to bring a summertime story that is engaging and evocative.
Loved the description of the lavender fields and some of the farming processes - this really brought the book to life
You are in for a treat with 'Summer at Lavender Bay'! It may be book two in the 'Lavender Bay' series, but it can easily be read as a standalone no problem. Of course, you know what I am going to say - I would highly recommend reading the first book as well.
Eliza is at the heart of this book as she finds herself picking up the pieces to a life she thought was certain, when she realises that her heart was no longer where she thought it was. (Metaphorically speaking, obviously...!!) Personally, I am surprised Eliza didn't come to her senses soon enough. I mean, what on Earth! Everything about her situation made my blood boil not because of what she had done, but because of her husband. Well, she could have told him to do one way before then, but hindsight is a truly wonderful thing! At least she came back fighting!
If you have read the first book in the series, 'Spring at Lavender Bay', you'll see some old friends popping up as Eliza's story progresses. Don't fret if you haven't though, Sarah Bennett has written these books so that everyone can enjoy them in any way that they see fit.
For me, Eliza was such a breath of fresh and, seeing as she lived in the bay, it didn't take her very long to slot back into life at home. Not only does Eliza manage to get back up again, she also finds herself making a new friend. He's rather furry though, I wonder if she noticed ;).
What I love most about Sarah Bennett's novels is how enchanting and magnetic they always seem to be. I don't ever pick up one of this authors novels and go, 'nahhhh, she didn't write it from the heart', because it is very clear that she does, and that is what I find really endearing. Yes, Sarah Bennett may give her characters emotional hurdles to jump over, and yes, she may have a theme running throughout her novel that could make tears fall from your eyes without realising it. But you know what? I love it because it shows that the author is real and relatable, allowing her readers to truly connect with characters like Eliza, or like Jack, a man whose situation made a lump form in my throat quicker than you can say 'give me the cake'.
Never mind fairytale princesses such as Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty, give me Eliza any day of the week. 'Summer at Lavender Bay' is a fairytale after my own heart. A book which not only tells a story, it creates a vision. A vision where the imagery of the beautiful words written, come to life making Sarah Bennett's characters to become more than just fiction.
I absolutely adored every single page of this book, and my only disappointment is that it was in no way long enough. I have said this once before, but I am more than happy to say it again; Sarah Bennett has the literary talent of a literary angel, making my life just that bit happier every time I read one of her books. Is 'Summer at Lavender Bay' her best book yet? Honestly? Yes it is, and I know I say that about every book that she writes, but she just keeps getting better and better with every new book. Just look at Eliza - she may have started out being low like Cinderella, but it didn't take her too long to find her special shoe (or in Eliza's case, special oil) to allow her to fly her wings like she was meant to have done all along.
Another lovely visit to Lavender Bay. Sarah’s created a great group here, and, whilst this could be read as a standalone, it helps to know all the characters from Spring At Lavender Bay. It is plenty summery in places, lots of talk of the beach, the lavender fields and Eliza’s summer creations, and was so happy with Eliza’s story turned out. I’m desperate to read Libby’s story but I’ll wait a while. That’s a Christmas one and I’m pressing on with my summer books for now.
It is always great to not just find an author but an author who writes series of books featured in one pace. You can go back and visit the characters that become friends and see how they are all getting on.
We first met Eliza in the first of the Lavender Bay series when she was about to go away and not be back to visit her friends Libby and Beth for a while.
Faced with her future at the airport - Eliza makes a life changing decision and heads back to Lavender Bay to stay with her parents in the local pub.
Wanting to find something for herself and establish her self-worth she decides to pursue her dream of making organic soaps and wonders whether the local lavender farm will be able to help.
However her first meeting with Jack, the farmer is not exactly friendly but there is something about him that sparks her interest. And surprisingly Jack starts to think about something other than collecting the lavender crop and being responsible for Noah, his nephew.
The course of true love never does run smooth and there are a few bumps along the way, especially when Noah gets injured and Eliza's husband turns up.
Yet again Sarah Bennett delivers a story which has you falling in love not just with the gorgeous Jack but the setting as well. I wanted to walk along the promenade at the bay as well as delight in the smell of the lavender that I am convinced was seeping off the pages.
Whilst of course this is a romance, there were some reality moments to keep you in check. The behaviour of Eliza's husband made me wanted to scream - a mere minor character can get under your skin, that's how good the writing was for me. Then the subject of death and the ripple effect it has on everyone left behind, made my heart-break as time inevitably moves on.
I look forward to the third book in this trilogy when I can of course catch up with Eliza and Jack, Beth and Sam but also get to the bottom of Libby and the supposed irritation of Owen which was scattered through this book in a real taster of things to come. I hope I have guessed right.
Summer At Lavender Bay by Sarah Bennett is a deliciously warm, welcoming, fun contemporary read and just perfect for a summer's day. There are some wonderful descriptions that make the book come alive for the reader. We 'feel' welcomed in the pub, on the farm and at the beach. We 'feel' included in the story. Community is important as everybody looks out for everybody else. "One of the perks of growing up in a small town... everyone kind of adopts each other." Small town living definitely has big advantages. The cold, clinical atmosphere of Heathrow contrasts sharply with the huge welcome in an English pub. The world seems to move from a harsh blueness to a warm glow, making everyone feel better. Self sustaining farming and local crafts are another important part of the novel. Locally sourced goods help to reduce the carbon footprint. Family is important. Family pulls together. "We come as a package deal." A breakdown of a marriage is always sad. If we are not careful, we will find that life has a habit of pulling us apart. "A slow slide of conflicting work schedules." There is the theme of loss. Death is just so final. It is traumatic for all but especially for small children. There is the theme of taking care of the fatherless. It is never too late to have a second chance. Sometimes fear immobilises us but we need to push fear aside and begin to live again. Summer At Lavender Bay was such a wonderful read. It will warm your heart and leave you smiling. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
Book 2 in the Lavender Bay series and I loved it as much as the first! although it can be read alone you are better off reading them in order to follow the three friends adventures. All the characters are so lovable and believable to small-town life.
This second book follows the story of Eliza who walked out on her husband Martin at the Airport, after his flippant comment about having a baby to stop her from being bored in Abu Dhabi like she was just another project.
Eliza then returned home to the only place she felt loved "Lavender Bay" where she met the gorgeous lavender farmer Jack, who had his own baggage to deal with.
I can't wait to read book 3 Libby's story, this series is a must-read!
Summer at Lavender Bay is a sweet contemporary romance that deals with a woman coming from a 10 year unsatisfying marriage and falling into a totally unexpected relationship with a single dad. I liked Eliza Barnes she took way too long to split from her jerk of a husband and he took way too long to realize he lost. I wish the author had included more of that conversation. I love Eliza’s support group and look forward to reading Libby and Owens story there are sure to be some fireworks there. If you like your contemporary with a bit of British flair you will be sure to love Summer at Lavender Bay.
Similar to its predecessor, this book is slightly predictable. However, it’s a sweet and low-stress story, which is my go-to when the rest of the world is high stress. In particular, though, I appreciate Jack. Not only has he stepped up to become parent to his nephew, but he has also gone all-in to make him his top priority. By explaining to Eliza openly and clearly that Noah will alway be his top priority, no matter what, he sets the expectations for any possible relationship up front. He gives her the choice to take him or leave him, as he is - a package deal. That’s an admirable example in this book for anyone with children, entering a new relationship. Bravo :)
I really enjoyed this! I loved spring at lavender bay when I read it last year, so I've been wanting to read this one for a while.
I was taken straight back into the world of lavender bay and I loved it. I really liked that this book involved more details about growing the lavender on Jack's farm.
I liked all the characters, Eliza was lovely and started out great with so much enthusiasm about her new life. I do wish there was more of a focus on that side though as there was no follow up towards the end. It was more about her and Jack.
Overall I really enjoyed it, looking forward to the next one in the series!
This is a brilliant five star modern fiction story. It's the second in the "Lavender Bay" trilogy .I can't wait until the next one. Eliza, Libby and Beth are three friends who grew up together in Lavender Bay. The first book was Beth's love story and this is Eliza's. She is separated from her husband Martin and has moved back home to her parent's pub "The Siren". Eliza dreams of running her own business and amongst other things producing lavender products. She visits a local lavender farm and meets the owner, Jack, sparks fly between them. Read on!
This book made me want to live in Lavender Bay! I loved it. It's such a sweet book and the characters are all fantastic. Except Martin!
As is the norm, I accidentally chose the second book in the trilogy to start. So I did feel like maybe I've missed something and then at the other end, literally the only criticism I have for this book, is that it just stopped. I was in full flow and I turned the page and it was The End. So now I'll have to read the other two to fill in the blanks and finish the story. But if they're both as good as this, we'll it's no hardship is it?!
A quick and delightful read with some lovely characters that you can warm too. This book involves Eliza who comes out of a marriage and goes back to her home town of lavender bay. The friendship between the three friends is a big part of the story and what happens next in Eliza’s life. This book is the second in a series of three books. Can’t wait to read the next in the series. Thanks netgalley for letting me review this book.
This was a really cute read which was exactly what I was hoping for. I didn't realise until I was a little way in that I had actually read the first book in this series, though it isn't necessary to in order to enjoy it. Characters are well written and the story is sweet. I recommend this as an easy summer read.
I was sent this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book, more so than the first and I didn't think that possible. With this sort of story you know it's not going to be an easy ride for the characters but I loved the twists and reading of two characters come together when they both thought they didn't need any complications. It is a typical you can guess what's going to happen but sometimes that's just what I need!
The characters in this story weren't as enigmatic as in Bennett's previous books, and I found myself looking forward to reading the next book in this series more than I was looking forward to continuing reading this one.
It was still a really enjoyable light and fluffy read, with a dash of deep emotions thrown in.
I liked it, but the author doesn't need to to insert so many plot devices, her characters are good enough, she just needs to trust herself and drop the melodrama from her stories. The hero's family is wonderful and a Cornish lavender farm sounds wonderful....well a girl can dream.
A good second in the series. Read it in one sitting! As good as the first and again great characters and descriptions. Glad to see Eliza get away from that "wanker" of a husband and explore her creativity and capacity for love! Ready to read the third one abut the third friend!
