Learned a lot from this book and also self diagnosed myself with just about everything in it🤣. It provided great information about mental health disorders, their symptoms, and how to treat them.
Read this for my diagnosis class and found myself actually very engaged (wild, I know). Kress writes like someone who respects both the science and the humans behind the symptoms, which makes this feel more like a guidebook and less like a DSM decoder ring. Accessible, smart, and sprinkled with enough empathy to keep it grounded and clinically helpful.
That said, the personality disorder bits felt like it showed up late to the party with a half-baked casserole. A bit more depth and organization would've made it shine like the rest. Still.. I would recommend to anyone trying to understand mental disorders without spiraling into clinical despair.
This book was very helpful. I even considered buying it. I really enjoyed the suggested activities to do with each diagnosis. I have had to read many diagnosis books and this one was by far my favorite because it gave information that one does not typically think about and phrases it in a way that personalizes it. I did not read chapters 8, 11, 13, 14 & 15 because my class did not use these chapters.
One of the few textbooks I enjoyed reading not because the writing is beautiful or eloquent lol, but rather it is to the point, clear, and concise. Though the book is long it really does help as a standalone and a supplement to the DSM. I think this is one of the best textbooks I've ever read and other text writers should take note, especially when dealing with fluff.
