I'm glad to see Manyuda San back and relieved not to see Suzui San in this volume because the man is an eyesore. When can we witness Kirari San's match? We see her winning though in this volume. By now, anyone can tell that I'm fixated on Kakegurui and Kirari San.
Well, this is the first truly dull volume of the series as the focus is mostly on boring side characters as they play an overly-complicated, visually static game about -- yaaawwwwnnn -- taxation.
Oh, no, someone isn't paying their taxes. How opposite of exciting.
The stakes weren’t as high in this volume/game, but it was still a compelling read. My only issue is I found there were a number of leaps of logic (more so than usual, anyway) which made the conclusion feel very far-fetched. The bet-within-a-bet thing was weird too.
Despite my quibbles, I can’t seem to tear myself away from this series. I’m liking the larger story-arc and that the plot has more direction, as well as there being more focus on the secondary characters.
Although the Greater Good game takes a while to get going, I do understand why Kawamoto included it as one of the gambles. It shows how human nature can be fickle when it comes to trusting each other in collaborative scenarios. There were some well-executed twists that were adapted well into the anime. I was impressed there weren't as many differences as I was expecting. Maybe those happen later on?
Compared to the past few volumes, not knowing as much about the Momobami family members who join this gamble does lower the stakes. While both Ibara and Miraslava have distinctive personalities, their backgrounds remain mostly a mystery. I also feel like Manyuda's characterization and him "coming back to his old self" doesn't feel as earned despite his calculations having a role in identifying the traitor. On the plus side, we do get to see how much unconscious faith he and Itsuki have in each other. This is an avenue the manga might take more of a glance at since at this point, this is where the second season went back and then onto new content.
More of a 3.5 star rating; This is one of the more slower paced volumes since the gamble wasn’t of physical harm or penalty; it was about tax with silver coins. It was really interesting to see some more members of the Momobami family and to see everyone interact. I think Sumeragi-san’s reasoning for believing in Manyuda-senpai is adorable. I hope he gets it through his thick skull that she likes him.
While this volume wasn't much more interesting than the previous- I did find the dynamics between the characters more compelling and I just enjoyed the game they picked this round.
The teasing of Yumeko's backstory is great! I enjoyed Manyuda, but the truth is Sumeragi is not really interesting to me. I liked her presence against Manyuda, and the game sounds incredibly fun.
But this wasn't as good as I expected it to be. I feel like branching out of Yumeko, Mary and Suzui is hard to do for the series, right now. But, of course, I'mma keep going.
yumeko ropes sumeragi, manyuda, and members of the momobami game into a game of "greater good" where sumeragi wins big by tricking miraslava honebami into teaming up with her; however, sumeragi announces she is dropping out of the race when she loses a side bet to terano totobami but is in full support of a recovered manyuda
