We all desire success--but we don't all understand what success actually is. Success isn't a place you arrive at after working hard. That's a goal. Success is found in the character you maintain while you pursue your goals. It's about who we are and how we project our persona at work, at home, at school, and everywhere else. And all it takes to find success and fulfillment are simple shifts in the way we think.
In this wisdom-packed book, Dean Del Sesto offers readers 77 brief reflections to help them shift their thought patterns for greater success in business and life. He shows how to interrupt the things that aren't currently working and provides clear alternatives to think, plan, and act differently for better results.
Perfect for leaders, influencers, businesspeople, coaches, teachers, and professionals of all industries, Shift Your Thinking for Success is a game-changer.
My rating: 4 stars This book is amazing! Mr. Del Sesto takes his vast experience in the work force and has crafted this amazing book full of tips ranging from self-care and how that can affect your work, to building your brand and becoming an influencer. I look forward to re-reading much of it. The insight into creating the image of who you want to be in the workplace has been very eye-opening. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, whether you are merely an employee who feels like they are low on the totem pole, or if you are an owner of a company. There is something in this book for everyone. It crossed over from the traditional workplace to the entrepreneur. Even if you are not in any form of business, I still think the tips would guide you towards a more successful life. The only reason I docked this book a star is because it can feel very overwhelming to tackle and some of the writing felt a little . . . deep? The readability is less simple than I would like in some areas, but that did not deter me from enjoying it.
How we think about what happens to us is important, Del Sesto writes. Our thinking can pave the way forward or hold us back. Sometimes small changes in our thinking can make a huge difference in our confidence and our potential for success.
Del Sesto provides seventy seven areas where readers can evaluate their thinking and behavior. Some are challenges, like taking control of your thoughts, beating them into submission. Some are very practical ideas, like checking with others to see if their performance evaluation of you matches your own. (You need to be willing to accept comments from others and be willing to change.)
Some of the topics will require much work, such as getting a good night's sleep. That might require much more than just giving yourself permission to sleep well. Whole books have been written on the topic. Another issue that might require more work than given is controlling feelings. That might take more than having a negotiating conversation with yourself.
Other topics include lots of practical ideas, like the section on listening. Another topic with some practical suggestions is setting goals. Some topics are about making wise decisions, like having the discipline of continually learning. Others are incentives to value people, like remembering their names. I loved his writing on the Digital Rudeness Syndrome.
Each of the issues Del Sesto raises is thought provoking. Some ideas could be implemented quickly while others might take months of work. This is not a “how to” book, he writes. He doesn't want anyone to try to copy his life. I like his emphasis that success is who we are, not what we do. This book is good for thinking through who we want to be. Developing a strategy for moving forward may require additional reading and planning.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
To rate a book on a system such as a five star system takes into account how well, or how bad a book is: for me to say Dean Del Sesto's book Shift Your Thinking For Success is a four star book doesn't mean it's not stellar. Nor do I want to get after the art department for the design of the book, and yet this cover doesn't "Blow me away." I've got to be honest, so here goes.
Overall, Sesto's book has a lot of praise and good things within the pages for SYTFS. He provides good, clear communication in how we ought to look at and take inventory of our life to ensure the success we can have. But for those who struggle, who've lost their job, who do a lot of what Sesto says here, end up saying things such as, "I already do all this, and yet..." How do you handle success God's way?
Really and truly God provides us the means for our overall good. He chooses how much we have responsibility for and how we reach out to others. Success, in God's eyes, is a stewardship program, an outreach ministry when you think about it. Success is not making a large pile of cash to hoard away. Rather, if we look at the disciples turned apostles lives in regards to this we find that -- like Peter -- some say, "Silver and gold I do not have, but what I have I give you: in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk" (Acts 3:6, Berean Study).
The success of the early Church, even to now in these modern times, is clearly how much we relate overall to one another in familial love towards one another, how we treat others outside of our respective ministries and in daily living with each other. Success is defined in this way about having, keeping and developing relationships with others, showing the richness and depth of love of and for the risen Lord, Jesus Christ. So, yes, I do give Sesto a four star rating on this book: he does a good job, but the book seems to fall a little on advice to those of us who already employ what he talks about.
I received a complimentary copy from Revell of this book in exchange for my honest opinion and feedback.
Business minded, non-fiction books are often quickly passed over by readers as they can be perceived as dull, un-engaging or lacking in actionable substance. However, as a young professional that LOVES to read I am continually pushing myself to diversify my choices to include a mix of fiction and non-fiction. Given my role in the business environment, I try to pepper my mix with business and self-improvement focused books. For this reason, I was excited to have the opportunity to read Shift Your Thinking for Success.
Author, Dean Del Sesto, is a successful brand and marketing guru. He is described as a “brander of 800 plus companies” and certainly seems to boast a successful business career. I was hoping his successes, failures and experiences would be well articulated and sprinkled among the topics discussed within, but was disappointed to see this was infrequently the case. In fact, not ONE study with actionable data was cited in this book. This may be a first for me, a business minded book lacking scattered personal experiences and analytical data, I was disappointed to say the least. I am often careful to recommend self-improvement books to readers for fear of turning them off to this genre permanently and while I’ve come across several five-star business reads, this is certainly NOT one of them.

Shift Your Thinking For Success: 77 Ways to Win at Work and in Life by Dean Del Sesto—a branding expert, speaker, and author—is "not a how-to book" but rather "perspectives to empower you to live more successfully today while strengthening the brand that you are to be more relevant, compelling, and influential at work and in all of life" (p 10). Del Sesto's premise that success is about character, not achievements, is an interesting one, albeit not entirely convincing or compelling to me personally (though it is always worth considering one's mindset and behavior, how we treat others, etc.). Taken solely as business advice, Shift Your Thinking For Success provides some wise insights and, at the very least, good reminders to act professionally and with integrity regardless the situation. Overall, however, I found this book very work-specific (not relevant for "all of life" in most cases, despite its focus on character) and fairly abstract and disjointed (each of the seventy-seven brief chapters are standalone without a clear connection to the premise in many cases, and there isn't a table of contents either!). I would have appreciated better application, not only practical but also more broadly as relates outside the workplace.

This was a good read. I found it to be really informative and helpful. It is not an easy, quick read, so you will need to take some time aside to really delve into it. But it is definitely worth the effort put into reading.
The shift your thinking does challenge your current thought process and encourages you to look at things a bit differently. It also prompts you to think about how you currently think about yourself.
I think the book would be great for just about anyone, especially those who are currently in the workplace and find themselves unsatisfied. But that said, I think it would also work for new graduates just launching themselves into the world of work. There are nuggets of goodness in here that would help them adapt and succeed easier. For instance, there is one chapter about “Never underestimate the damage that occurs by breaking commitments that appear insignificant”.
The chapters are short and to the point. It’s almost set up like a devotional so that if you don’t have a lot of time you could read a chapter a day. Good luck not reading ahead!
Definitely would recommend this book.
This book was provided to be by Baker Books and was under no obligation to leave a review. All opinions are my own.
I believe in Proverbs 23: 7. It says, "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. (NKJV). I believe what we think can and does change our life. So when I had the chance to read Shift Your Thinking For Success by Dean Del Sesto, I thought it would be a good fit. And I was right!
There's so much wisdom in this book, this book should be offered to anyone who wants to be or needs a life coach. In fact think of this book as a life coach in a book! The subtitle of the book is 77 ways to win at work and in life. A lot of the information is just good old-fashioned ideas--something that's in short demand today. But also a lot of it fits in with today's thinking on branding and how to best use that branding in your business and private life.
For example the 9th way to win is all about integrity. It goes on to give 25 ways to have more integrity. Those 25 ideas alone are worth the price of the book. Another winning way talks about relationship over agenda. Another talks about preparation. Many of the ideas are not new but they are needed. This book is a great way to jumpstart your career and your life.
There are so many books out there on how to be successful, how to maximize your productivity, how to, how to, how to... so when I saw 77 I was like, oh my goodness, really? How am I going to remember 77 things. I opened the book and was pleasantly surprised how short each entry was. Each topic is short enough to read quickly but is packed with meat and relatable examples and experiences of others. Entries end with a short one sentence take away. While I had a hard time just reading these entries, I feel the book would be better used piece by piece maybe when the situation arises. To use the book in that manner though would require an index which sadly this book does not have. I'm turned off by the sheer amount of ways to win but if you take one a week maybe over the course of a little over a year you can get through them all. A lot of them are common sense in my mind. I really liked entry 14: If you want to get the most out of every conversation, think relationship before agenda. I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. This has in no way influenced my review. All thoughts are my own.
Shift Your Thinking for Success: 77 Ways to Win at Work and in Life by Dean Del Sesto is a motivational book about achieving success. Sometimes books about success feel like they are lacking “meat,” and that they merely consist of a lot of recycled ideas put together. Del Sesto’s book, however, is not one of those books. Each chapter incorporated valuable and inspirational ideas.
I like that the book discusses how technology plays a role in success. I really appreciated Chapter 29, which talks about how we are building both an offline and an online brand in life. The key ideas in Del Sesto’s book are encouraging, and also thought-provoking. I am still mulling over his words, “Until we push the limits of caring in conversation, we’ll never know the value of what may exist there.”
This is a different book for me to read but I actually enjoyed it. There are so many ways you can apply the principles in this book.
Although there really isn't any talk about God or Jesus the values presented in this book clearly line-up with the Word.
This book made me think about how I represent myself. Is my word my word or do people think I will say something and then not do it? You knows those people, right? The ones that say, "Hey I want to get together to talk sometime." And you know it will never happen.
This book addresses issues like that and so much more. If you interact with other people I think anyone can find value in this book.
A copy of this book was given to me by the publisher. All opinions are my own.
