Manhattan Mysteries #3

Murder in Greenwich Village

Rate this book
“Detective Jane Bauer is a most welcome addition to the ranks of fictional cops.”
–Peter Robinson

When NYPD detective Jane Bauer and her team check in for their new assignment, they reopen a cold case that’s a real killer. Ten years earlier, police responding to a spate of late-night 911 calls from Greenwich Village discovered a young African American undercover cop, Micah Anthony, shot dead on Waverly Place. The killer left no clues, and the murder remains an inscrutable mystery . . . except for two things: Anthony had infiltrated a lucrative gun-trading operation in the city, and it seemed likely that he knew and trusted the killer.

So begins an investigation that leads Jane from Village brownstones to middle-class Queens, from wealthy Sutton Place to sinister subway tunnels, as a mastermind of murder resumes operations–and every path is mined with menace.

“Harris knows a lot about cops and a lot about women and she knows how to plot a good mystery.”
–Stephen Greenleaf

This book, the third in a good police procedure series, is terrific. The story is intricate but so very believable that I had a hard time letting go to accomplish the more mundane tasks like going to work. The characters did not always behave in expected ways that told me my reading expectations may have been programmed. I enjoyed the surprises. The ending was messier than expected; again probably due to today’s writing mirroring the cadence of tv stories. Maybe replace my use of the word ‘messier’ with the more current ‘fluid’ and you get the idea. The writing is solid. The characters are believable. The action is not predictable but enjoyable. The pacing is first rate.

Murder in Greenwich Village

This is the third book in the Manhattan Mystery series and in my opinion the best so far. The story is engaging and the plot has a few good twists. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen it changed. I am invested in the characters now and anxiously awaiting the next book.

A series that never disappoints!

Terrific procedural solving old cold case files in New York. Smartly written with terrific characters. Story moves at a brisk pace characters well developed. I recommend reading in order. Well worth purchasing.

Didn't like this one as well as the other two, but still worth a read. (The Hack character and scenes are boring.)

Loved this series and do wish there were more. Jane Bauer is a great character; grounded, smart, sympathetic and the NYC setting is always fun.

Very convoluted and detailed, at times I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed this Jane Bauer series, wonder why there are only 3.

I read the entire Christine Bennett series (17 books to date), then started in on this sereis. I thought I would tire of the theme of the mystery series (cold cases)--the Manhatten Mystery series revolves around a female detective in a cold case squad--but Lee Harris didn't disappoint.

This particular story, the third of the series--and last since I've heard that Harris's publisher won't be doing any more--sad--was easily the best one of the three. The story revolves around the ten year old murder of an undercover police detective. The mystery itself is engaging as the squad goes about it's business, but as with most mystery series, the characters and their stories keep readers coming back for more. Detective Jane Bauer is a well drawn character and Harris is as adept at writing about the workings of the police force.

I hope both series get a new publisher. I wasn't ready to stop reading either.

Overall, I loved this series by Lee Harris. The characters are well developed and interesting and stories are engrossing. I must say, however that this last one was my least favorite. It just didn't seem to flow as well, and it was muddled with too many characters and at times confusing. The series kind of went downhill from Murder in Hell's Kitchen, through Murder in Alphabet city, to this last one. Still a solid police procedural, just a bit disappointing and hard to get into.

I will be jumping into her Christine Bennett series soon and looking forward to that! I love cold case stories.

Third in the series based in Manhattan. In this book, Jane and her team look for the cold case murderer of an undercover policeman and also find missing guns. It is another easy, quick read, but entertaining.

Well-written while a little convoluted. Lots of detail, heavier on the crime than on the characters. You still want to know a little more about the main characrers, so that speaks to the quality of the book.

Almost stopped reading after the first few paragraphs, the writing was so formal. After checking the reviews here, kept on reading, and I'm glad I did.

Conversation is choppy and the story drags on. I actually skipped some chapters to get done faster.

I have enjoyed the other books by Harris, and this one has started off as intriguing as the past. I look forward to the outcome.
