This abridgement of James D. Hart's Oxford Companion to American Literature contains some 2,000 entries. They include brief bibliographies of important authors, plot summaries, descriptions of major literary movements, and a wealth of information on other aspects of literary life in America from the colonial period to the modern era.
4.0 stars. This is arguably the best reference book for American Literature. It is not accurate to say that I have "read" this entire book but I have been using it fairly extensively since I acquired it in 1991 as part of an 8 volume leather bound set from Easton Press called the "Complete Oxford Reference Set." I have found it to be an excellent reference tool that is both easy to use and comprehensive.
I like to have a lot of reference books around me, even with the internet so handy. I get them at library book sales where I paid $5.00, for instance, for this truly useful book - supports the library and supports me. I'll grab anything that starts with 'Oxford Companion' - and of course it's on my Unfinished shelf. Reference books are never finished.
