Haleigh Everts's life looks perfect, with thousands of Youtube subscribers, a loving husband, and an adorable baby--but it's been a long road to get here. Join her on her journey through conversion, doubts, and the process of returning to a religion she once believed she'd left behind for good. This honest and open look at modern discipleship is a refreshing read!
I picked this up on a whim because I've happened upon Haleigh's YouTube channel and found her videos interesting and informative.
I was a bit disappointed in this book, however. I found the present-tense narration a bit hard to follow, but I've never liked present-tense narration. I respect her desire to find faith, claim faith, lose faith, and then return to faith, but much of this read like her mission just to be married in The Temple. That's it: find a husband, and be married in The Temple.
While I also respect every woman's tendency to be self-conscious about body image, I didn't love how she constantly expressed how she felt she couldn't find a husband because she wasn't pretty enough or thin enough.
I really wanted to like this more than I did, because I do enjoy studying religions and different faiths, but I was left with a bit of a bad taste in my mouth about mainly just hearing about finding a a husband and being thin and pretty. I would have preferred to hear more about what the LDS church believes.
I expected an explanation about why this person left the LDS church. Rather than problems with some doctrine or event, basically I got that she left because boys at BYU wouldn’t ask her out, she got lazy, and she started sleeping around.
She tells of her repentance and the finding of her husband. That is the “coming back” portion of the book.
On the final couple of pages of this book the author mentions that she has become active on social media teaching what she has experienced. When I took a look I found that evidently she has divorced her husband and left the church AGAIN. Knowing this, I wouldn’t suggest this book to anyone!
This book was very inspiring. I am a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints. This book helped me gain more of sense of peace in my own personal life.
I really enjoyed following the authors Journey through her struggles and trials that led her to making the life changing decisions that ultimately helped her find happiness. I was drawn in and compelled to not put down the book until I finished reading it. It is an easy read and with the style that it was written, it made you feel like you were the authors friend and she was talking directly to you about her journey.
I recommend reading this book if you have ever struggled with trials or making tough choices in your life.
