Cade Williams' worst nightmare has come true. The Necromancer's black magick has not only released the Adversary from the infernal realms where Cade imprisoned it, but allowed the fallen angel to possess the body of Cade's beloved wife, Gabrielle, in the process. When the Templars interrupt the ritual and kill the Necromancer, the Adversary sprouts wings and escapes into the darkness.
Branded a traitor by the Templars for his cooperation with the sorcerer, willing or not, Cade finds himself hunted by his former allies as an enemy of the Order while working feverishly to track down the Adversary and rescue his wife from the vile creature's control. It is almost too much for the weary Echo Team commander to handle.
Just when he thinks things can't get any worse, he makes contact with a creature known as the Forsaken One and discovers answers to the questions that have haunted him since the Adversary first appeared in his life. Answers that may ultimately cost him more than he ever imagined.
New York Times bestseller Joseph Nassise's series have been hailed as being "unremittingly entertaining" (Publishers Weekly) and "raising the genre to brilliant new heights" (Library Journal). Now, in the fifth book of the Templar Chronicles, he delivers his most pulse-pounding thrill ride yet.
I'm the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than fifty novels, including the Templar Chronicles series, the Jeremiah Hunt trilogy, and the Great Undead War series. I've also written several books in the Rogue Angel action/adventure series from Gold Eagle. I'm a former president of the Horror Writers Association, the world's largest organization of professional horror writers, and a multiple Bram Stoker Award and International Horror Guild Award nominee.
When I'm not writing, I'm hanging out with dogs, practicing recurve archery, or off-roading in the desert around my home in Phoenix, AZ.
I received an eARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. The Templar Chronicles is one of the best series in Dark Urban Fantasy, and Nassise raises the bar in the latest installment. There are enough twists and turns to fuel a shelf of thrillers, and enough dark doings to satisfy any horror fan.
This story is full of surprises, and extremely tense situations. Confronting the Adversary (the archangel / arch-demon Asmodeus (spelled somewhat differently) not once, but twice, killing him is tough enough... but Cade has to deal with all his conflicting feelings dealing with his wife's body, which Asmodeus has taken up residence in.
To complicate the situation even further, Cade must deal with the Templar Order, which has decided that he is in league with The Adversary. Fortunately, Cade does not have to confront the Adversary solo - ultimately his Templar squad supports him. He deals with the Adversary, and the team survives, but this turn of events does not end as he expects that it would. There's much more in store for him, and the Templars. One does not kill the High Prince of Hell in just one confrontation, or without collateral damage. This is paranormal suspense at Mack 9.5. A page-turner with an unrelenting beat. The end of the saga follows in at least one more sequel. I can't wait to get hold of it!
Case Williams learns how to stop the Adversary and it breaks his heart. He must go to the greatest library to learn about his for, then go find the one who can send him to the final fight.
When I started the journey with Cade Williams and the rest of the Templars in Joseph Nassise's series, I was hooked from the beginning. As someone addicted to well-written urban fantasy, there's something about worlds of magic intersecting with ours that draws me in every time. And Nassise offered just the right amounts of intrigue, danger, villainy, and betrayal to keep things interesting. Sure, there's magic and mayhem, but Cade has been a part of something bigger since day one - and a lot of that journey pays off in Judgement Day.
If you haven't yet dipped your toes in this particular lake, I'd encourage you to start with The Heretic (Templar Chronicles #1) and work your way through. Funny enough, I got hooked with Eyes to See, the first book in the Jeremiah Hunt series, and stumbled into Cade's world later... I keep wondering if Hunt and Williams inhabit different sides of the same world and will pair up for an adventure at some point.
Anyway... If you're looking for fun, tense, urban fantasy... Be sure to check out Nassise's works. It's all been good so far and I hope it continues for a long time to come!
I received a copy of this book from the author, and loved it. Cade Williams is now trying to confront the evil forces threatening life on earth as we know it and scarier still, they are using his beloved (and he thought dead) wife in the process. This is one of those series that should be read from the beginning, with each volume adding to the story which is building up to what should be an amazing finale! The Templars in the U.S. are now controlled by a petty leader, who instead of rebuilding the decimated teams with good men and women, has put people that he chose for their loyalty to him and not to their true cause. These new people never worked with Cade and believe the nasty things said about him and see him as an enemy in league with Adversary, which of course could not be further from the truth. Only his Only his old friends still in Echo Team and another few still believe in him. This book includes some huge revelations about Cade and why he and Gabrielle are so important to the Knights Templar, as well as to the efforts to save mankind!
Another great installment of the Heretic Series. Cade Williams is asked back to the teams but refuses because he is taking care of his wife's body while her soul is elsewhere. He former teammate convinces him to come to the scene of a ritual and he does. He finds dead bodies, one resembling him right down to the ruined side his face and his ruined eye. While Cade is investigating he's locked his wife safely behind his wards, but the ritual scene is simply an opportunity to get Cade away from his home and kidnap the body of his wife. Now the story really takes off while Cade learns more about his gifts and how they came to him. He spends every moment looking for Gabrielle and a way to save her, body & soul. Great story!
The minus 1 star is because the book was poorly edited. I would never give a book an extremely poor rating simply for bad editing because a book is about the story and the characters. I enjoyed both in Judgment Day so I give the book 4 stars. The plot is a strong continuation of the previous books in The Templar Chronicles and the core characters are well developed.
I would recommend this series to all who enjoy fantasy and especially dark urban fantasy.
Cade Williams has been cast out by the Order, after being coerced into helping The Adversary. Having failed to save Gabrielle, who is now processed by the Adversary, Cade goes on the offensive with only one goal save his wife!! With no support and being hunted by the Order, Cade goes looking for the Forsaken one, but will he help and will the prize of victory be too high!! Another good addition to the Templar Chronicles series and left nicely for book six, Fall of Night.
This one is fast joining my top three of The Templar Chronicles. I don't want to give much away, but this book not only reveals a lot about Cade's purpose in this world, but the (at this point) endgame of the Adversary.
In this book, Cade has been removed from The Order, but he continues to do his job. A Ronin Templar. No master, but a mission to complete. Trust me, if you love The Templar Chronicles, reread the series, and get started on this book.
Another great creation from the mind of Nassise. What's great about discovering this author is that he has so many other books in his barn I can read. A fun well written story.
