Jane Goodall describes in her field notes her observations of a hyena family. Though her notes are thoroughly annotated and detailed, this book is family friendly and her observations have been adapted for younger audiences. Vocabulary will be too difficult for beginning readers. Children who have loving oral readers will definitely enjoy this book. The photography is amazing. Full color photographs on each page supplement a simple, yet entertaining story of a day in the life of a hyena "family". Hyena pups are adorable photographs but there are also photos of angry hyenas, a feeding frenzy and the hunt. This is an excellent book for the young naturalist or zoologist in any family. Especially if you plan to read it with them.

I treasure this little book. Had no idea Jane Goodall wrote any books for children until I found this book for sale at a public library book sale. I love that it was taken from her field notes!
A charming collection of science books that are actually geared toward younger audiences so they can learn about some of Africa's more famous creatures when they are younger. Clear and easy to read Jane Goodall shares with us her talent for educating the world without drowning you in too much information while at the same time sharing breathtaking pictures that put you right in their world.

This is probably so far the most oriented of the Animal Series book since most of the stories involves around the cubs with bits of hyena information thrown in. You definitely get a nice introductory look into hyenas but not any deep dive.
There are also one or two photos in this book that are breathtaking while bringing you into the Africa that Jane loves....
I actually enjoyed this book. Not what I would normally read a child as a bedtime story but it was her choice. It was quite interesting to see how the hyena lives in the wild, and certainly for most children (and probably most adults as well) they will come away from this book knowing more about the hyena then they knew before. This is one of a series of eight books Ms Goodall has written concerning various species of African wildlife. I recommend all of them. Your child will certainly learn something from these books, and will enjoy the learning process as well. They are easy to understand and the use of large pictures is a plus. All in all a good purchase.
These are really nicely-presented little books, each following a different African animal. The animal’s habits, behavior, and role in nature all discussed, along with color photos. By focusing on a single baby animal and his relation to the world around him, Goodall has presented an engaging and sympathetic series. Children who love animals (and how many don’t?) will enjoy these books.
I had this whole book series as a child and loved them. Reading them now brings back good memories, and they are still enjoyable to read. I will be passing these books onto my children to read and enjoy too.
