"This is the first time that I have made the commitment to give a series of talks with the specific intention of communicating my experience. The things I am saying, I am saying for the next generation-people who will set and invent other styles and who will find their own way, just as I have integrated the works of those who have been working before me."-from Santiago Conversations with StudentsWith these words, Santiago Calatrava launched a recent series of lectures at MIT filled with insight, anecdote, and hard information about the practice of design. As the most important figure at the intersection of architecture and engineering, Calatrava reflects on his person path and ties it to his design work. Includes original sketches by Calatrava.
Highly inspiring words from the Spanish architect who designs sculpture-like buildings and bridges. This is my first book from the MIT Lectures series. It's a very concise book where Calatrava mainly talks about the process and ideas behind some of his works.
This slim little volume is the second book I’ve read in the MIT series. As a non-architect/engineer I enjoyed getting a glimpse of Calatrava’s thought process and inspiration. It gave me a better understanding of the forces at work in his architecture and how these amazing structures were conceived.
As with other books in this series, it utilizes a limited palette of color which is both economical and playful. The photography included is more atmospheric than instructive, but the hand sketches are a valuable addition in relation to his descriptions.
