The Fairhaven Chronicles #3

Ember: The Revelations of Oriceran

Rate this book
The hunt is on…

Victoria Brie has a target on her back.

The assassin who killed Victoria’s parents has his eyes set on conquering her beloved hometown of Fairhaven… and Victoria’s dark magic is the only thing standing in his way.

To beat him, Victoria has to go all in… even if it means sacrificing herself to win.

It also means doing what she never thought she would do—acquiring more of the dark magic that made her a target to begin with.

An ancient power lies deep within the labyrinth beneath a long-lost kemana called Lochrose. Once home to the most influential witches and wizards, it now rots under the dominion of a horrifying beast… a monster only one witch has ever escaped.

And Victoria has to face it head-on.

But as is always the case in Fairhaven, there’s more going on than meets the eye. The countdown has begun, and Victoria is running out of time to save her home. With every turn, she risks being trapped in Lochrose forever… and losing the people she cares about most to its winding depths.

This series is an enchanting urban fantasy saga with sarcastic ogres, wise-cracking wizards, and a brutally addictive full-contact sport called Berserk. Your only regret will be not starting it sooner.

WARNING! This story contains cursing because these eighteen-year-olds are honorable rebels. If cursing offends you, you might not like this book.

Time to get serious. Victoria has some kick-ass magical hardware but not the strength to wield it. So what to do? Well this is a urban fantasy and young adult adventure with all the gung ho attitude that entails so . . . let’s go get some more magical hardware!

Now let’s see, where might we find some forbidden magical weapons lying around? Oh in a long lost hidden city of course. Is it inhabited by witches and wizards? I’m sure they won’t mind if we borrow some of their stuff. Of course no treasure hunt would be complete without a nice and cuddly (okay strike the nice and cuddly) little (actually strike little as well) monster guarding the treasure.

So there you pretty much have the story for this third installment in The Fairhaven Chronicles. Our merry band of adventurers, Victoria, Audrey, Fyrn and , to Victoria’s great despair a certain young wizard with a very large ego set out to the lost city of Lochrose to obtain the tools to make Victoria sufficiently bad-ass to take on Luac.

As usual the story is told in a lighthearted, fun and fairly fast paced way. Fyrn is his usual grumpy self, Victoria and Audrey are the BFF’s that overcomes any obstacle and then we have Diesel who I am actually warming to or at least finding less annoying. The bantering between them all, even Diesel, is quite entertaining.

Personally I found this installment as enjoyable as the previous two. It is a fairly light read but it is a fun, youthful adventure story. Now that Victoria is loaded up with some new pain dealers what I would like to see in the next book is some serious elf arse kicking. Luac has outstayed his welcome. Four books with the same chief asshole is quite enough for this reader.

This series just gets better and better.

Even though I just started on the series 3 days ago, I will take up #4 as soon as I finish this review.
I have mentioned before that I thrive in Military SciFi and have stayed away from fantasy for the last twenty years or so. ANDERLE screwed that up will "Death Becomes Her". Not sure why or how I even picked up the first book, however it has been one heck of a ride. If you have not read the KUTHERIAN GAMBIT Series yet, stop reading this review and get the first book mentioned above.
For some reason as far as I can tell all of the authors writing in the KU universe use the " Minimalist" approach....not sure what it really means...but to me it means there are no wasted words..I get nothing but meat and action. I have found I can handle the magic stuff just fine if its a good story about good people Trying to do the right thing.
The only problem with this series so far is that after #4 ... I am going to have to wait for the next book. If I did not know that these books are only a few weeks apart, I would not bother to read them until the series was complete.

...Keep them coming FAST

Deep within the long-lost Kemana a horrifying beast has made its lair… and they mean it. But not is all as it seems with this… so much less is going on than it seems actually. The book holds little in the surprises department.

I will say the writing is pretty good. Well, outside of the confusion of action scenes (which is par for the course for the greater part of the Oriceran universe books) it is pretty good.

Victoria and Audrey are so overpowered there isn’t really any challenge (or at least the action scenes are well written enough for it to seem to) for them. You can see this in the smaller battles and the way others interact with them when danger is present.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the book is Luak, the villain. The small POV part of his was more interesting than almost all of the interactions between the other characters. Too bad there was only a tiny bit of this.

Overall, nothing special in the book. The series isn’t going to win any awards (or at least not in my book) but it is good enough to be called a good read. I enjoyed it and I look forward to the finale of the series in the next book, Nightfall.

Absolutely fantastic!

I so love this world! This book didn't spend much time in my beloved city of Fairhaven but our heroic characters did a lot of traipsing around in dangerous tunnels on their way to the magical city under Sedona, Arizona. They were on their way to collect another artifact to help Victoria become stronger so they could defeat the evil elf, Luac, and save their fair city of Fairhaven. Our very talented and creative authors have come up with some exciting adventures and challenges for our heroic characters. I highly recommend this book for all you fantasy lovers everywhere. You won't want to miss out on this fantastic, magical adventure.

An Interesting turn

Interesting turn of events. Is killing something necessary for an artifact? The only way to get the artifact is to kill something so she has two artifacts now so she is worth a lot more dead but will it help keep people safe or will she turn evil. The story was ok but the twists and turns had me wondering where we were going. Not all warm and fuzzy with this series. NoT feeling the connections to characters I get from these authors.

Increasing skills

More exciting adventures with Victoria and Amber! The girls are growing in power and kicking some serious ass! Along the way they make new friends as well as deal with nasty enemies. I'm loving the story flow and can't wait to read the next book.

Fun times

This one was another interesting story. Victoria seems like she might finally be able to take care of that reject of an Elf, Luak. I will be so happy to see him finally sent to the land down under (I don't mean Australia 😎) Here's hoping that the next book actually takes care of that issue.

This third book of the Fairhaven Chronicles was full of action, adventure, magic, and surprises!

It seems that Victoria and Audrey are getting very little time to stop and think about what they need to do next, before that next task is already upon them.

Unfortunately, Luak is determined to kill Victoria, to take the Rhazdon Artifact from her, and Fyrn has finally decided that finding a second Artifact, for Victoria to gain the strength she needs, to kill Luak, is worth the risk of the dark magic fuelling them, from taking over her personality!

And so Victoria, Audrey, Fyrn, and Diesel, set off, once again, in search of another Artifact.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It really was full of surprises, and kept me entertained from beginning to end.

Unfortunately, this next book to be read, is also the fourth, and last, in this series, and it shows how much I've been spoilt, while reading all of these authors, who are published through LMBPN, my favourite Indie Publishing Company, that I've got used to series that have six, or many more, books to them! Lol

When I consider that I used to get excited at having the chance to read trilogies, it shows how much the Indie publishing business has changed things for we readers - all for our advantage! Lol

Anyhoo, I'm off, now, to start reading 'Nightfall', and so, once I've finished that, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think of it, and also the whole four book series!

Absolute entertainment!

I love Victoria, Audrey, Fyrn, and Diesel (who I hope continues in his quest to win Victoria's heart)! I have also fallen in love with Fairhaven and most of its residents. Highly recommend this series, it is full of action, friendship and humor!

If you enjoy a story with twist & turns with females protagonist who can kick ass and take names well give this one a read. It has fun likeable characters and a good plot. The next one promises to be good too, can't wait.
