Authentic characters, innovative abilities, serious snark!

Kay MacLeod is a fantasy addict from Nottinghamshire in England. She loves magical worlds and spends much more time in them than that boring real one.

If Kay isn’t writing, or thinking about writing, she’ll be immersed in reading, gaming, playing bass at church, or painting miniatures. She grew up addicted to Terry Pratchett books, Magic: The Gathering, and lording it over her fellow nerds as the DM in Dungeons & Dragons games. Fortunately, this gave her plenty of storytelling practice and made her grateful that all the characters do as they’re told now other people aren’t controlling them.

Kay’s gaming experience shines through in her works, from the Pokemon-inspired Maiyamon books to her epic fantasy, which readers say has a hint of a Dragon Age tale.

With character development at the heart of each story, they’re backed up by distinctive magic systems and a dash of sarcastic humour that gives Kay MacLeod her unique voice.

When I first read the synopsis of the book, I was intrigued and was looking forward to reading my first indie book. After reading it, I was thrilled by the outcome of the story. Though, it started out confusing until I reached the climax of the story.

Some of the scenes may be dulled, but it gets exciting in between. Though, I have wished it was more exciting, but at least it did during the climax. Also, I have noted there were a couple of mistakes, considering that there a couple of "fluff" words, too many misuse with the comas, and statements that were wordy. But all in all, I have enjoyed the book.

I think what's unique about this book was that it shows that it's hard to work with the team, unlike the previous stories I have read in the past (correct me if there are any books that have similar plots). I think Kay might've demonstrated that is realistic. More importantly, the teammates range from adult to maybe adolescent so that's not something you would see in a story, right?

I've enjoyed the characters that Kay comes across with like Asher and Malik. I love the humor that the author has put in her book so that's what keeps me reading, along with the plot twists.

I cannot wait to read more of the series when I get the chance. I'm looking forward to what the adventure will take me. ^^

Complex story of a clash between two worlds. Kitty Fairlow is on the verge of getting married. Her father reveals, she is not who she thinks she is, but one of The Constellations, and he entrust her to bring a special Urn to the princess, their leader. This begins an epic story involving the organization of more 'Constellations," who are recruited and must work together to save their world. A fine fantasy filled with descriptive battles and engaging characters that will delight both YA and NA readers.

A very good plot, based on constellations who want to save their world from invaders. This book is good balance of humor and sarcasm.
I liked the characters, especially Kitty. I found the dialogue delivery fantastic. I enjoyed many scenes. Kitty is innocent but courageous. I can't stop my smile while she asserts -
“Here’s a tip: girls don’t like it when men ask them if they’re pregnant- especially when they clearly aren’t!”
There is much more for every reader. I would love read this series.

A fresh take on classic fantasy characters combined with a strong story. Well built characters conduct the reader through a captivating story. The level of detail in the descriptions is breathtaking. Surely a read to enjoy on a rainy day with nice cup of tea. I look forward to the second one.

F'ing INCREDIBLE! And I totally gift Asher the whole of my heart ❤️

I honestly had no expectations going into this. I was just in the mood for a fantasy escape, and this one caught my eye. Didn't even read the blurb before d/ling it.

So glad that's the way I played it! Because seriously, when this book blew me away, the impact was all the more satisfying for being entirely unanticipated.

The world is fascinating. There's a shit-tonne of action here. It's a wild adventure crammed with twists and turns. But above all else, this is a character-driven story with real depth and emotion and humour.

Kitty is an awesome protagonist. And she did a fantastic job of pulling me into her head and making me care.
Blindsided by the revelation of her inherited gifts and thrust into a mission for the world she was unprepared for, this girl doesn't waste precious time agonising over the tough hand she's been dealt or allowing her self-doubt to cripple her. The Archer steps up and deals, keen and determined.
Caught in the midst of in-group conflict, this girl doesn't cave to peer pressure or taking sides. And caught out by the enemy she's only just learned of, she strikes hard and fierce without hesitation.

Kitty's fellow Constellations are such a thoroughly mixed bag of personalities that even the simple task of them setting up camp together could explode into something as dramatic as the fight scenes.
The bickering and banter is stupendously entertaining. Each group member has unique characteristics and motivations, all fully believable based on their backgrounds, and their interactions carry a very natural and fluid feel. (Also, passionate love of tea = relatable!)

Even though I came to expect an incident of mortal peril with every turn of the page, the attacks still managed to always catch me unawares. Cleverly written and fast-paced, there's not a dull moment, nor is there a predictable one.

Heirs of Power is not a romance. But it's not without the tease of some.
Our Archer and the Juggler have some scorching white-hot sparkiness going on between them, and. It. Is. Glorious!

The Juggler is an anti-social snarkmaster called Asher, and he is -without a shadow of a doubt -one of the most amazing fictional characters I've ever fallen for. Asher is just so wonderfully sharp-witted and damaged and adorable. Totally kick-ass too. And the way he slowly begins opening himself up to Kitty made my chest ache!

Heirs of Power is a book I'd recommend to everyone (and all their friends).

A great fantasy novel, with a gorgeous book cover!
The first title of a saga series.

Good plot and pace, high quality descriptive writing and memorable characters.
Kitty is a great character- feisty & independent but also a bit of a naive innocent.
The settings are very well portrayed- the dialogue and narrative are so vivid its as if I'm actually there with the characters, seeing them with my own eyes.

I've said it before, but this perfectly sums up this book
~If you like fantasy, cool powers, sarcastic characters and tea you should check this out!~

I started reading this from the first draft of the first few chapters, and have been there every step of the way, to where it is finally a physical book.

The story follows main character Kitty, who is a hunter living in a small village, waiting to be married to her childhood sweetheart.

When a routine hunt for robbers in the forest turns out to not be so routine she is thrust into a world of spirit powers, beings from another universe and a fight for survival.

Along the way we meet a rag tag group of other people gifted with spirit powers - Constellations - who must band together to save the world from the invading Tenebri.

This book has everything you would want in a fantasy. Excellent world building, a decent enemy, genuine edge of seat moments, and most importantly, a brilliant ensemble cast. There are great female friendships throughout this book, which is, for some reason, still quite a rare find. The humour and sarcasm balances out the more serious elements, and each key player has their own unique well rounded personality and presence, meaning you can't help but root for The Constellations.

The best part about it? This is only book one!

Heirs of Power (The Constellation Saga #1) is a fantasy novel which is broad in scope and combines elements of the make-believe with realistic portrayal of the characters. It takes the reader to a beautiful world threatened by an invading army from another planet. The fate of this world and its human population is in the hands of a group of young, second generation Constellations who have to put aside their daily lives and face numerous challenges in order to fight off the invaders. Kay MacLeod presents an array of well-developed, interesting characters who, despite their special powers, do not lack in typical human virtues and shortcomings. I really liked the interactions between the characters, as well as the detailed depictions of their battles and surroundings. I look forward to reading the second book in the series.

Heirs of Power was a pretty interesting book. It hooks you right from the beginning and drags you through the entire adventure.

First, the book started off great for me but then it did get a little slow right after. Maybe it's just because we were just getting to know Kitty Fairlow, who is the MC, and her whole life story before her adventure begins.. but yeah, I have no idea!

Well about Kitty, hmmm.. well she has a fiance name Luke and they are planning their wedding. Well, at least they were until Kitty had to go run an errand.. that turned into an adventure for her father. From this little errand to the princess, Kitty finds out that she isn't some normal girl who is about to get married. No, she actually belongs to a special and very secretive group of people - oh, and she basically needs to prepare for this epic battle that's about to go down.

Now I loved the writing - love it! I just wish this book didn't have boring parts in it.. but sadly not every book is perfect. I did really enjoy getting to know the characters in this book. My favorite was probably Asher because he could sometimes make me swoon. I honestly loved Kitty's friendship with him because they are both really caring and loyal people. Also super jealous that Kitty is a skilled hunter.. I could probably catch myself in a trap that I set.. because I lack a shit ton of hunting skills. She also kind of reminds me of Katniss - which hey, I didn't mind at all.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I seriously can't wait for the second book to come out.. and if it is already out.. well then I can't wait to dive into that book! BRING IT ON!

The cover is great, very close to what I imagined the archer to look like. I can't imagine anyone who reads this book wouldn't like it as long as they ha a love of fantasy. This author took the time to give each Constellation their very own ability, and their own personality. Serena, the dancer might think she is the the leader, but I think Kitty, the Archer actually holds this group together. I have to say Asher maybe brash and arrogant, but he is my favorite character do far. There is this race of being with magical powers that want to suck our world dry, the Tenebri. The Lucidians are against this, so they use all there powers to push them back to there barren lands, but 10 souls fuse with 10 humans whom the Lucidians feel are worthy. The first born of the 10 humans get the Lucidians souls and their powers to fight the Tenebri. Those 10 are the Constellations. They have scattered, so the 3 Constellations closest to each other, the Archer, Dancer and Juggler retrieve the Astronomer which will lead them to the test. This setting makes me think of king Arthur days, although I don't believe it specifies. I really enjoyed the book. I could tell the author put a lot of thought into the characters and the story itself. I will be watching for book 2.

Wow! This book is a really, really pleasant surprise. I will be honest, I am not a fantasy genre reader usually so I began reading with a little trepidation as I was out of my reader comfort zone. The skill of Kay MacLeod's writing and story telling abilities overcame my fantasy genre fears very quickly and I was very soon drawn into the enthralling storyline, clever characterisations and fast-paced action.

I'll admit I couldn't always keep up 100% with every battle scene but this is just me. The author has real skill in writing about fighting and formulating the complex narrative web that leads to great continuing sagas. I can already see book after book attracting a legion of fans as there are a lot more twists and turns ahead for heroine Kitty and the brash but admirable Asher, I'm sure.

Would highly recommend to fantasy lovers and to other book lovers who just like a good, page turning, engrossing read.

Heirs of Power is exciting and vivid! It is packed with fast paced action, magic, and danger! For those who love a good ya story full of adventure and inherent power, this one is for you!

I found this one to be very unique and adventurous! I thoroughly enjoyed the idea of the constellations being passed their abilities from their parents because of ancient spirits inhabiting their bodies. It was a new magic system that worked really well with the vivid world that MacLeod built. The writing was vivacious, and the characters were very dynamic.

I was quite fond of the fact that each constellation character was different. They weren't all bad-ass teenagers that quickly adjusted to their fates and the dangers thrown in their faces. Each one handled things differently. Each one had their own personality and their own magic about them. With very different backgrounds, MacLeod was able to create a wide range of young adults that each stood out, making their gifts very easy to remember while reading.

Though the beginning had me mildly confused with the intense pace, I quickly fell in with the flow and had a fun time at it. There was never a dull moment. The plot had fire and gripped me the entire time. I really loved that the diversity of the characters' backgrounds allowed for several conflicts to arise in the story so that the book stood out from other ya fantasies where all the characters always over power the enemies and never seem to face hardships. The characters were varied enough that they didn't always see eye to eye, which gave the story a little realism and was refreshing.

I'd definitely recommend this one to ya fantasy lovers. It was dramatic and unique and had a refreshing complexity to it. I finished it in once sitting and was already craving book 2 by the end.

Compelling fantasy for teens and adults alike.

I love the banter between characters, which makes their quest/calling, which is very serious and dangerous, all the more real because they are so believable in their relationship development and emotions.

Definitely a page turner - looking forward to book two.

I absolutely loved this book! It’s one of those stories that has you thinking about it whilst you’re going about your day-to-day life. I felt a real affinity for the characters, and the book was a great balance of plot, character development, back-story, and battles. I’ll be heading straight from writing this review over to buying the 2nd instalment!

I read my first book by this author last year and really enjoyed it, while waiting for the next book in that series I decided to pick up this book. I wasn't quite sure what to expect of it and I was afraid I might not enjoy it as much as her other series. I shouldn't have worried as I fell in love with this story. It grabbed my attention form the first chapter and stayed a riveting read all throughout the book. I was sad when I finished it and I can't wait to dive into book 2 as I have to know what happens next to all these characters and their world!

I really enjoyed this book. It starts off strong when Kitty and her father stumble upon a strange ritual, Kitty has no idea what's going on. Her father tells her to go speak to the princess who will reveal more. And that's how Kitty's journey starts. Kitty doesn't know who she is until the princess reveals everything. Kitty is part of a group called the Constellations who have special powers due to a spirit who shares their body and they can stop an evil race from taking over and killing their world. First they have to find the rest of the constellations and so their journey starts to find the other constellations as well as stop any minions of the evil race they come across.

This book is filled with action, cool battle scenes as well as great characters. The set-up might sound typical with an evil guy and chosen ones as you see in a lot of fantasy books, but the way the author used those tropes in this book was unique and gave the book a fresh feel. I really enjoyed following Kitty and her friends along and as their journey continues they add more characters to their group. It was awesome to learn more about their powers and see who they would meet next. There are some really unique and cool powers and it was so awesome to see what everyone could do. And there's so much danger along the way. The evil guys follow them at every step and they land in danger and difficult situations along the way.

There are great twists and reveals. Times where the story went in a different direction than expected and some nice twists and interesting ways things developed. I kept wanting to read more as it was such an engaging read.

Kitty was a great main character, while she didn't know what she was she quickly adapts to her new role. And it was great to see her dedication to saving her world. She also had some cool powers being The Archer. It was great seeing her grow into her powers and fit into the group. Her friendship with the other constellations was awesome too, her relationship with each of them is different. There is a bit of romance and I have a guess how that will develop, but we'll see in future books.

The group of characters in this book is awesome. I quickly grew to like most of them. There are a few characters we haven't seen as much about and it took me a while to warm up to Serena. although I did think her actions made sense and were realistic for her character she just wasn't as likable sometimes. I especially liked Asher, he's such a complex and interesting character. One of those characters who has an easy smile and seem easy going, but he's one of the most dedicated constellations and I grew even more impressed and curious about him the more I learned. I like how he becomes friends with Kitty.

I am also very curious about the Mystic, we don't know as much about him yet, but I really liked what we see so far. Then there's Ellie and I like what she brings to the group. And The Swordsmen was great too, I liked the twist with that character. I liked seeing the groups grow together and how they each find their place and role. I am also impressed with how each character was different and had their own unique personality. I never was confused who was who and as they slowly add more characters to the group it gives the reader enough time to get to know each of them.

Just like in this author's other series the action scenes were well written. You really feel like you're in the middle of the action and I could visualize well how everything was playing out. I liked how there was a good mix of action scenes, their journey forward as well as character development. There is so much that happens in this book, but the pace was perfect for this book and it kept me engaged all the way through.

I liked the world building. we get a feel for the world building, but most of it focuses on the powers the constellations have, some background about their world and the evil race. Slowly throughout the book we learn more, but at the start there's a bunch of information at first which helps to get started and get a good grasp on the world. There are some great developments and new information you lean along the way.

To summarize: I really enjoyed this book. It was such a great read with plenty of action, a perilous journey and awesome characters. I really liked following Kitty along as she sets off on this journey and learns more about herself and her powers. I loved all the different characters in this book and how they all come alive and have their own personality. Asher is one of my favorite characters so far, he's such a complex and interesting character. I also like seeing how all the characters interact and the friendships they form. They really grow into a tight and efficient group. There is plenty of action in this book and I like how the author writes the action scenes, they're easy to visualize and engaging to read. I liked the world building and how we get a feel for the world. The author puts an unique spin on common fantasy themes and it worked out well. I enjoyed learning about all the different powers the constellations had. The threat to their world was real and scary and added some danger to their journey. I liked Kitty and her dedication to saving this world. I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to dive into book 2!

Heirs of Power by Kay MacLeod is the first book in The Constellation Saga. Kitty Fairlow has everything she could want: hunting, protecting those she cares about, the peace of the woods she's always known, and an upcoming wedding to her childhood love. After Kitty and her father discover an ancient ritual, her father reveals the startling truth of their origins. She's one of the ten Constellations, The Archer, a power she inherited from her father. After a lifetime of being hidden, Kitty is drawn into an ancient battle, following a dangerous calling to save the world from the Tenebri, an ancient race escaping into her world. Fighting alongside the proper Dancer and the abrasive Juggler, they're in a race against time to find the other Constellations to prevent the destruction of their world at the hands of the Tenebri.

Nothing is as it seems. In a search for Constellations, twists await around every turn and surprises will keep you turning the pages. Heirs of Power is a humorous and dangerous adventure to save the world; a unique spin on magic and the Constellations with teamwork at the heart of the story. Kitty is thrown into this shocking new reality embodying the Constellation of the Archer, and has to learn as she goes. Her journey has humor along the way as she's stuck between two people who can't stand each other. One of the relationships that shines throughout is the friendship that develops between her and Juggler Asher. He's abrasive, snarky, often blunt and rude, while she's more subdued, calm, and always vocal about caring for others. What makes this friendship so special is how Kitty digs deeper and sees that underneath all that is someone caring and loyal. They come to rely on each other and she learns some deeper secrets about him and the Constellations' history. Kitty's primary skills lie in hunting and archery, but she also has a gift for seeing into the hearts of people. This makes her a reliable and empathetic heroine.

Kay MacLeod brings these characters to life, layered and flawed, taking ordinary people and turning them into heroes with extraordinary gifts. These are normal people who make mistakes, have flaws, and aren't entirely prepared for the weight of the world, but the journey is one of self-discovery and coming of age. Heirs of Power is a fantastic start to the series, a must-read with danger and tragedy, emotion and heart, and with characters that you'll fall in love with.

This is an exciting and thoughtful book (the first of a series) about the threat of alien incursion into a world similar to ours. The threat is countered by a team of people ("Constellations") who have inherited powers from their parents. It is noteworthy for having a world and society that looks quite pleasant compared to many in fantasy (though rather erratically modern - bunny slippers but no guns?) and for women being allowed to participate on equal terms. (A big plus for me.) The author has bravely chosen to make the first book largely about and some may therefore find it slow, but I didn't - there is still lots of action, and plenty of shocking moments. It is very strong on character, and on the different ways in which the Constellations' parents (the original team) have dealt or failed to deal with the implications of their calling. I found this fascinating. I enjoyed it very much, and am very eager to read book 2. My misgivings are that I wasn't won over by the prose style, which was rather monotone and expository (but some of the dialogue, especially between the two main characters, is very sparky). I hope that we'll get a big more nuance on the war (there are hints that we will) because although one can appreciate that the good guys have a good cause, both sides seem to have the same level of devoted loyalty to their own side... and vindictiveness towards the other. Don't be put off by eccentric dialogue punctuation! This is a very enjoyable book.

Book Review: Heirs of Power (The Constellation Saga bk 1) by Kay MacLeod

Heirs of Power is a steadily moving stream of deep, thoughtful characterizations, beautiful descriptions, and swift, provocatively gritty, action. It shines as a character driven story by giving you deep insights into the main character, Kitty, while thoroughly rounding out the personalities of the rest of the main cast of characters with amazing honesty.

A second generation of mystical warriors tied to the constellations must defend their world from an invasive race of aliens. With little more than myths and legends to go on, they must first find all of the Constellations, and over the course of the book that they are probably the most human of anyone in their world. They love, they hurt, they fail, they win, they cry, they rage, they kill, and do it all over again. They are far from perfect, but they are loyal, caring, honest, and will do anything and everything in all their varied powers to save their world.

I read through this book nonstop. I couldn’t stop. Ms. MacLeod’s skill at fleshing out characters into living, breathing, real beings is a god given gift I could only dream of. As an author, I am truly in awe and recommend this book to everybody and dare them to not break down crying.

I really enjoyed this book and meeting each character as it progressed. The fact that these humans bonded with Constellations giving them special abilities was cleverly done. The characters were all likeable and individual, but I must admit I had a real soft spot for Asher, his personality really stood out and his eventual true friendship with the heroine Kitty was a good part of the story as it developed. The ideas were very original, I've read many fantasy books and haven't come across this concept before. Each character was well described and easy to picture, with individual personalities to match. The storyline flowed well and kept my interest all the way through, so it didn't take long to read at all!
The only thing I would say is that the character names and the constellation names they were bonded with got a little confusing at times, as the author seemed to change them throughout the book. For example Kitty, was her human name and the Archer her constellation name. One name was sometimes used then swapped over for the other. This was not a significant problem however, and didn't take away the appeal or the enjoyment of the novel, with the story itself being so strong.
I look forward to the second novel and will certainly be reading it when it's published.

This book is the first in the Constellation Saga. Kitty, the main character has spent her life being raised by her father who has taught her to be hunter. Kitty does not realize that she is part of the Constellation group until an encounter with a otherworldly ritual when her father reveals her true identity - she is the Archer. Each member of this Constellation has super/special powers . The Constellation members are a combination of those raised to take their place in the group and those surprised to find out what their specific fate is. There are a lot of well developed battle scenes and conversations. There are some well developed supporting characters such as Asher, the Juggler and Serena, a Royalty body double, the Dancer. I really enjoyed the fast paced interaction between the characters. The sarcasm was well done and humorous.

This is an engaging fantasy novel that reminds me, oddly, of the Chronicles or Riddick mashed up with Lord of the Rings and Battlestar Galactica (2000s version). Heirs of Power features a motley assemblage of heroes and heroines who have their own unique identities but also function as a unit when needed. The Lucidians' world is threatened by the Tenebrians and their need for energy and land. To combat this threat there are Constellations, protectors of the Lucidian world, who will fight the Tenebrians. I think the archetypes embodied by the constellations is what reminds me of BSG.

Anyhow, the author nicely sets the content for a sequel (or more), and I look forward to reading additional works in the series.

Heirs of Power is a gripping tale that will leave you wanting more. MacLeod's descriptions made me feel as if I was there, along side the constellations as they began their journey. I found all the characters to be relatable and enjoyed discovering more about their complex identities. There is one warning I would give for this book; if you have a lot to get done other than reading, do not start this book. It will pull you in from the start, and you will not be able to put it down until you finish! This is an epic read and I highly recommend it to Y/A and even adult lovers of fantasy and adventure.

Kitty Fairlow thought should was an ordinary girl who could hunt well due to years of training

Her life changes as she finds herself stumbling across an outworld ritual. Turns out she hasa inherited her father power s and is a Constellation but she is not the only one.

As the new generation learns about their powers, they must also battle with an enemy who plans to kill them off. In a world where you do not know who to trust as your enemy could be right in front. Can these Constellations protect themselves and mankind? An interesting read.

Not being a true fantasy book fan, I’ll have to say, I greatly enjoyed reading “Heirs of Power.” Kay MacLeod has developed a complex world of social hierarchy, inventive lands, and a threat to the existence of this world. However, it’s her main characters that will grab onto you and keep you reading to find out what they can do and how they will defeat evil. MacLeod’s use of special powers is ingenious and her character’s interactions provide humor and realism to the story. I’ll keep reading, I think you will too.

What a surprise is in store!

Imagine finding out you have inherited powers that can help save your world. This happens to the Archer and others in an epic fight to save their world from invaders. It's a fight of good verses evil. With no idea who will win.

“You are not safe. You never will be. You need to accept that now, coz for the rest of your life you’ll need to be watching yourself and your family.”

After stumbling upon an otherworldly ritual, Kitty Fairlow discovers that her own incredible hunting skills are not merely due to a lifetime of training. She’s been gifted powers from an ancient spirit, passed down by her father. She is a Constellation. And she's not the only one.A new generation of heroes have each inherited unique abilities to prevent the corruption of their world by the Tenebri, a race that thrives on life energy. Kitty, along with a high-born dancer and a snarky juggler, must find their allies before the Tenebri army picks them off.
With the powerful enemy emerging, can the Constellations gather in time to put an end to the threat for good, or will their foe succeed and wreak the same destruction they have unleashed on their own world?

The plot was very unique and intriguing. As Kitty is destined for more than just a normal life, her father reveals that she is one of several Constellations. The history behind everything was thoroughly explained and I loved how the characters were connected through so many elements. The dialogue was beautifully written and really kept the flow of the book going!

“She said that she decided that we should all pretend as if she’s a normal person to prevent her from being identified. I got the impression that you may have pushed the issue more than she let on?”

One thing that stood out to me that downed my rating was how the characters were referred to as multiple names and it really through me off, multiple times throughout the book. I loved being able to know their abilities but having a different name for each character made me feel very out of sync with the book almost the entire time.
I also found the book plot repetitive, meaning that many of the sequences of events were already done. The characters would fight, meet someone and than fight them.

I loved the dialogue between the characters as it wasn't so heavy and built up to the plot rather than tearing it down like it does most times in a fast paced book. Macleod did a tremendous job with describing the characters and relaying their feelings to the reader as we watched the story unfold.

I would recommend this book to fantasy lovers who love a great tale or mysterious plots! This book definitely was a great read and I can’t wait to read the next in the Constellations series by Kay MacLeod.

“I am a Constellation. I choose to protect this world. My heritage is a gift.”
