Beloved bestselling author Sandra Boynton collaborates with iconic New Yorker cartoonist George Booth to create this hilarious book about George, a lovable dog with a big secret.
George is a big dog who likes to just sit around. But there’s another side to George that even his family doesn’t know about. With Sandra Boynton’s whimsical storytelling, and celebrated cartoonist George Booth’s one-of-a-kind illustrations, Here, George! is a sweet, quirky, and charming board book that’s a must-have for every collection!
Yes, this is George. He likes to sit. He likes to sleep. He loves his family.

Another fantastic tail by Sandra Boynton about an old dog who still has some new tricks. Gave this book to a friend who had just been laid off as a way for him to see that there are still opportunities out there - you just have to look around. Happy to say that he liked the book and soon found another job - so it all ended well!
I think the book is wonderfully adorable. If I was a 2-4 year old dog lover, this would be the book I’d want read to me and I would slobber on it as I looked at the pictures. It’s fun!!!
I’m pretty biased, because I’m knowledgeable about its provenance, but several parents have told me that it is their kid’s favorite book so that should tell you something positive about the book.
At first I wasn't sure about the illustrations, but I don't think Sandra Boynton is capable of drawing non-cute animals, and George is definitely not a cute dog. He's kind of old and crusty looking. But man, can that dog dance! Kids will get a kick out of it.
Richie’s Picks: HERE, GEORGE! (Board Book) by Sandra Boynton and George Booth, ill., Little Simon, May 2018, 32p., ISBN: 978-1-5344-2964-2
“All we need is music, sweet music. There’ll be music everywhere. There’ll be swinging and swaying and records playing Dancing in the street.” -- Marvin Gaye, William ‘Mickey’ Stevenson, and Ivy Jo Hunter (1964)
There are generations of stories and jokes about what the kids or the pets do while the parents are away. Sandra Boynton’s new board book HERE, GEORGE! is a delightful example.
George is a big, old dog who, despite the encouragement of the human parents and child, just sits around all day. But, then, when the humans go away…
“George is feeling a little glum. He lies down. He closes his eyes. Outside, some wild music begins to play.
George opens his eyes. He likes music. Now George is sitting. Now George is standing. Now George is dancing. And dancing. And dancing. Until he can dance no longer.”
Of course, when the humans return, George, again, does not move...except for his happy tail.
I love the illustrations by veteran New Yorker cartoonist George Booth. George the dog has such a blissful look on his face as he’s dancing. Then, when “he can dance no longer,” George looks absolutely ready to pass out, lying on his back, his tongue hanging out, and his eyes staring blankly.
Simply adorable. George doesn't move very much. In fact, he barely flicks his tail. But the reader finds out that George has a secret passion that involves a great deal of movement! This book is sweetly executed so that the reader knows something that George's owning family doesn't.
Most of us have seen the movie about the pets that get into mischief when their families leave for the day. This strange little board book shares the story of a dog with a secret life. This family pet just sits, and sits when his family calls him, but you won’t find out why right away. Simple sentences and colorful pages depict basic black and white drawings, that will make readers smile.
Parents and caregivers will smirk and love this sturdy board book. Little listeners and beginner readers will giggle when the secret is unveiled.
I can't say enough of the simple brilliance of George Booth and Sandra Boynton. A single drawing of his can bring more smiles and laughter than most comedies. And Sandra's sweet story adds even more whimsy to the pictures. Five stars isn't enough. Now he needs to write the story to her drawings.
A children’s book that reminds you of when you could memorize the whole thing and repeat it to your friends and family. Love a sweet and simple book about a dog!
First book of the year! Glad to be able to read out loud to my son.
Jack borrowed this book from the Ashland Public Library.
It’s a cute story about an old dog who secretly loves to dance. I found it a bit weird that George thinks of his family/people as man, lady, and child though and not as a relation or by name.
Jack wanted to read the book himself then Nana tried to read it to him and got halfway through before he ran off to play. We went back to it later before bed and he finished listening to it while I read.
I really like this book. I always wonder what my dog is doing when I leave. In this book George is stubborn and won’t go with his family. But when they leave he dances around to music he hears in the distance. And it just makes me think? What does my dog do. But this book made me smile and laugh. I like it.
I love this book. It is completely different than all the other Sandra Boynton books. Our daughter loved this book when she was little. She loves the parts where George would dance and dance when his family was away. I love how he is mostly grumpy, but he does love his family. I also love the repetitiveness of the story.
board book. too small for sharing with my storytime group (~6 inches or 15cm square), but another chuckle-worthy story from Sandra Boynton, with delightful illustrations and great repetition that moves the story along in a way that builds anticipation.
Definitely not one of my favorites by Sandra Boynton. George is a creepy looking dog who doesn't listen when anyone says "Here, George". It's only when the house is empty, and the music plays....tht George lets loose. The book is a bit funny for kids, but it was a one and done for me.
My granddaughter and I agree on 5 stars. George looks to be an older dog who is going to do his own thing. While his humans are away, George gets down with some dance music. My granddaughter loved this because, of course, we “boogied” with him.
A dog who brings to mind the old "Rude Dog" cartoons of the 1980s is very sedate, that is, until he hears some music and there is no one around to see him dance.
