And if God and I spent the day together, what exactly would we do?
Would God feel what I feel? Would He see what I see?
Would He like to explore and see the world with me?
The Christian worship song “I Can Only Imagine” touched countless lives with its glorious representation of being in the presence of God, and this beautifully illustrated board book invites you and your little ones to imagine those same wonders. Share the joy of a personal relationship with the Lord with your family today through the creative, faith-filled book I Can Only Imagine for Little Ones.
The book I Can Only Imagine is a children's book based on the Christian worship song 'I Can Only Imagine' by Mercy Me. It's a beautiful song that has touched so many lives and brought to life what it could be like in Heaven. This children's book takes you through the mind of a child of what heaven could be like for them. It follows a little boy's heart asking questions about heaven. What does God like to do? What would it be like to spend a day with Jesus? Does God like ice cream or have a pet?
I read this book with my 7 year old son. When he saw the title he immediately started singing the song not knowing the two were related. So I first played him the song, we sang together and then read the book. Not only did this help him better understand the meaning behind this incredibly powerful song, but it also opened up a wonderful conversation about what heaven is like and what this means for our relationship with Jesus. This book captures that childlike faith I hope we as adults never lose. My son has often asked various questions about heaven and what it will be like. For him, it's "will we all live in a big house" or "who will I see first when I get to heaven". For me, Bart Millard captures my questions perfectly in his song - "will I dance for you Jesus, or in awe of You be still, will I stand in Your presence or to my knees will I fall, will I sing Hallelujah, will I be able to speak at all". For a child, his book perfectly captures their questions. I cherish the conversation my son and I had, and that door was opened thanks to this book. Even kids are curious about their future with God. This book helps emphasize that He is with us right here, right now. So while you have questions about heaven, you can have a relationship with Him now.
Like my son, most kids in the church have tons of questions about heaven. Wonder, faith, curiosity and imagination combine in this sweet book that will encourage both you and your child to spend time with God. And the ending of this book beautifully talks about how we don't have to wait until we get to heaven to spend time with God. Just like in his song, there are so many important messages and lessons, the same is true with Millard's children's book. Also, the illustrations are simply delightful.
And while all of these are conversations we need to be having with our children, it doesn't mean it's always easy. It also doesn't mean the church is having these conversations with our kids in Sunday School. This book is a great conversation starter, it's also a great way to encourage your child's faith and wonder in God and heaven and that relationship.
Just as I loved this book, my son did too. It was priceless to see the excitement in his eyes reading these words. He asked if we could get this book for some of his younger cousins for Christmas. I highly recommend this book.
My thanks to Bart Millard, Thomas Nelson Publishing and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
As I write this review I am listening to "I Can Only Imagine" by Mercy Me. This is a wonderful song and this book is a great way to bring this message to children. It has a young boy wondering what Heaven is like from a child's perspective. From playing, to eating ice cream and of course spending time with animals, this makes Heaven a less scary place for children, especially if they have recently lost a loved one. Of course the message that we can have a relationship with our father God and his son Jesus here on earth and they are with us always is also communicated.
The book started with the first part of the song and then was written in a rhyming text with an easy cadence. The colorful illustrations match what the child is thinking and talking about, such as eating ice cream, playing outside, or singing together over a campfire. This would make a great book for a family library or a Sunday School class or church library. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.
I don't know how I feel about this kid's book. It would probably be a good book to read to a child who's family member has recently passed. Otherwise, it just seems like it brings weird questions about heaven and dying. Of course, I love the song I Can Only Imagine and I love Bart Millard's story. But I don't know if this really worked for a children's book the way I hoped it would. It sort of positions heaven like a really great version of earth. Like in heaven what we'll be doing is enjoying the best and biggest ice creams and having fun like we're at an amusement park. I get that it's a book for kids and these are the things that kids love to do, but it doesn't really focus on God as much as I would have liked. I mean, not that eating ice cream with God wouldn't be fun....but I don't think that's the point of heaven, nor the best thing I want my kids looking forward to in heaven. Maybe that's just me. Also, I was surprised and disappointed that a book about being in heaven with God didn't actually tell the kids HOW they can be sure to spend eternity in heaven....What a great opportunity that was missed.
A wonderful picture book, based on the powerful song, I Can Only Imagine. This book takes the idea of Heaven and makes kid-like statements and questions about what it will be like. Some are funny... ( "Why, maybe in heaven, God loves to play ball." )... Some are more serious thoughts that we all may wonder... ( "If I spent the day with God, what exactly would we do?" )
The variety of topics covered shows some diversity of things about Heaven that are truly worth pondering. It should easily help open up conversations about Heaven with your children.
The illustrations are just darlin'! Downright adorbs. Such cute detail -- especially that furry dog!
I CAN ONLY IMAGINE is a picture book for children based on the popular song by that name. It is well-written, beautifully illustrated book about a boy who wonders what'd it'd be like to spend a day with Jesus doing the things that the boy wanted to do, like eating pancakes, jumping on clouds like trampolines, and other fun stuff that would appeal to children of all ages.
This would be a fun book for a church children's library, nurseries, preschools, and home libraries. Children will enjoy having it read to them and looking at the pictures.
This is a sweet children's picture book of a child imagining what it will be like in Heaven and how spending a day with God would be like. It is a very light-hearted romp in the life of a child. His imagining has him wondering about all the things that he loves about his current life and if they will be part of what Heaven is all about. Ice cream, pets, swimming, playing ball....
It ends with the child's expressing his delight that he knows that God is with him in the here and now.
While this picture book has imaginings about Heaven it doesn't touch on the story behind Bart Millard's song "I Can Only Imagine" and simply takes the theme of imaging what it will be like for someone in Heaven and seeing the face of God.
Personally, I think that it this book is a bit on the light side and trivializes the beauty and joy of Heaven and the Holiness of God the Father and God the Son. I am sure the story will open doors to explore the expectations we can have for what Heaven will be like for us and being thankful for a Savior and God that loves us always.

With smooth flowing and playfully rhyming text, and detailed illustrations full of striking colors, "I Can Only Imagine" is a stunning children's book that I highly recommend to parents and libraries. This book will surely capture the attention of children and inspire them to set their minds on God and Jesus, as well as imagine what awaits us in Heaven. I really love this book.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and the book's publisher in exchange for my honest review, for which I am very grateful.
A delightful children's book with a wonderful message! Starting with the first part of the song by the same name, the rhyming text takes a look at what heaven may be like through a child's eyes. Imaginative and creative, this would be a perfect way to talk to a child in their terms about the hereafter, taking away some of the fear of the unknown. Assuring them also that we can have a relationship with God in the here and now also. The colorful pictures match what a child may enjoy doing, such as eating ice cream, playing outside, singing together by a campfire. I love the idea of God singing over us and with us. "I wonder the name of God's favorite song?" This would be a good gift or addition to anyone's library for children, or in a Sunday School. Recommend!
(An e-book was provided by NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.)
A sweet faith based children's book that will get little readers excited to think about heaven. Each page is just a few sentences which makes this a great before bedtime read and can send their little minds of to peaceful dreams. I would recommend this book to people who choose to share God with their children and believe in heaven so that they get the most out of the book.
“I like that there are animals and thinking about God having a pet. I think He might have a woof woof. Maybe His woof woof is black, red, and pink, or really rainbow, and really big. I think mommas and babies should read this together. If it was my book, I would have more cars in it.”—Lillie, 3yo
I Can Only Imagine: A Friendship with Jesus Now and Forever by Bart Millard of MercyMe with Laura Neutzling Illustrated by: Sumiti Collins Publisher: Thomas Nelson: Children’s ISBN: 9781400321339
Thanks to NetGalley and publisher Thomas Nelson: Children’s for the ebook ARC of I Can Only Imagine: A Friendship with Jesus Now and Forever in exchange for an honest review.
I CanOnly Imagine asks questions a child might ask and invites families to wonder together: What is heaven like? What does God do? What would it be like to spend a day with Jesus? Children will see that although experiencing the glory of heaven may be far off, we can enjoy a friendship with Jesus every day - right here on earth.
I give this book a rating of 4 stars. I read it to my 4 year old daughter. She enjoyed this book and its colourful illustrations. This is a good book for encouraging children to have a friendship with Jesus. I also think it would be a good book for young children who are having questions regarding loved ones life and death. It shows that even though you can’t see someone they will always be with you.
Written by Bart Millard and Laura Nuetzling, I Can Only Imagine follows a child's imaginings of what God must be like. What types of games does Jesus like to play? Does he like the same types of ice cream that I do? Would he like to race with me? The book goes through the fanciful questions that little children ask, addressing the everyday concerns and wonderings of a preschooler.
While I found the book to be sweet and light hearted, I struggled with how shallow it felt. On the one hand, it's important to teach our children that they can enjoy their everyday day delights with God now. That He's not a distant God, but one who is always with them. On the other hand, a friendship with God is so much more than ice cream and wagon rides. It's learning, growing worshipping. Where are those ideas? So while I thought this book was sweet, it was definitely lacking. I would recommend searching for a book that is less self-focused and has more substance.
*Disclaimer: I received this book for free from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. What a special way to share it's deep truth with my children. This book is surely to be a favorite for any parents or child. It would make a lovely gift and should be in every little one's library. Whether you love the song or haven't been introduced to it yet, you will love this book!
The publisher provided an ARC through Netgalley. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts
The Christian worship song “I Can Only Imagine” touched countless lives with its glorious representation of being in the presence of God. Encourage your children’s sense of wonder and faith with I Can Only Imagine, inspired by the hit song by MercyMe. This beautiful picture book will capture your family’s childlike faith and imagination. This book was published earlier this year, I received a Digital Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. The book begins with the beginning lyrics of the song, I can only imagine what it will be like When I walk, by your side I can only imagine what my eyes will see When you face is before me I can only imagine From the publisher: I Can Only Imagine asks questions a child might ask and invites families to wonder together: What is heaven like? What does God do? What would it be like to spend a day with Jesus? Children will see that although experiencing the glory of heaven may be far off, we can enjoy a friendship with Jesus every day - right here on earth. Whimsical, playful illustrations and thought-provoking questions make this a book one that families will cherish for a longtime. Being fans of the band, Mercy Me my daughter and I were familiar with the song lyrics and enjoyed how the book lines up with the message of what heaven will be like. In fact, my daughter said right away, "this is just like that song!" I really like this picture book and the way that it assists young minds with all of their questions about heaven. My children have asked similar questions that the book lists "Will we all live in our house together in heaven? Will I have a dog? Do I have to attend Sunday School?" This helps children know their questions are important and adds value to their curiosity. Giving them this validation gives them permission to speak freely and continue seeking answers. This skill is valuable for all of their learning throughout life; at home, at school, and at church. The author, Bart Millard is a founding member and lead singer of the multi-platinum selling contemporary Christian band, MercyMe. He is married to his childhood sweetheart, Shannon. They reside in Franklin, TN along with their children Sam, Gracie, Charlie, Sophie and Miles. I Can Only Imagine (picture book, novel, and movie) follows the life of Bart Millard who lost his father to cancer and was inspired to write the mega-hit song. I Can Only Imagine delivers a message of hope with those who seek reassurance in the face of the insurmountable.
The Christian worship song "I Can Only Imagine" took the Christian community by storm when it was released. Millions were touched by the very thought of trying to imagine what God would be like and what it would be like to spend a day in His presence.
The book follows a little boy's heart as he tires to imagine that special place called heaven. He contemplates such questions as: What does God do all day? Does God have a pet Himself? Would he be allowed to bounce on clouds all day long and not have to wear a scratchy choir robe? Is there breakfast featuring fluffy pancakes and warm biscuits served up there? Does heaven offer ice cream before lunch with ginormous scoops of every flavour that resemble an ice cream bouquet?... and many, many more.
The diversity of happy children's faces and the wrapping up of a day filled with heavenly adventures terminates under a star-studded sky around a cozy campfire singing praises to the heavenly Father and His goodness.
Fun-filled, vibrantly coloured illustrations, depict children playing who are overflowing with pure joy. They are excited to share with each other about the day that they spent with God. They discover He is omnipotent and delights to take part in every aspect of their lives.
Written in rhyme this faith-inspired book encourages a child's sense of wonder and faith and encourages him to open up his imagination and dare to dream what heaven may be like. It assures him that God is with him here on earth each and every day as he goes about his normal life.
I love that the story is written through the eyes of an open-minded and curious child who takes time to be quiet and reflective, setting time aside to dream about spiritual things. I know this book will be an inspiration of hope as to what is in store for people of all ages now and in the future. "I Can Only Imagine" opens up a shared dialogue of the pleasure of having a personal relationship with the God and will have them looking forward to the wonderful things that lie ahead for them. As it is written in the Bible, "Thy Kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven" rings very true in this story. I highly recommend it.
As a little boy goes through his summer day, he wonders what heaven will be like in regards to the things he comes across like messy hair, breakfast foods, games, ice cream, and ponders what God likes to do. He concludes with the assurance that whatever it will be like it'll be great because God will be there and He loves us.
Trying to do a 32 page intro to heaven is a daunting task. I like the message of reassuring children that heaven is a wonderful place prepared by a God who loves us so much we can't even dream up what may be there. It also reassures children that God is right by their side here on Earth through His Spirit, which is very important and a helpful tool in combatting fears. I was hoping for a bit more from the book, though. Partly that's my own fault for building up my own expectations, and partly I'm afraid some kids are going to read this and believe heaven is a giant wish-granting place (which kind of misses the point). I was hoping for the book to brush on wrongs being righted, the drying of tears, etc. because even young kids have a very strong sense of justice and are not immune to the hurts of this world. Perhaps that could be addressed in a sequel and this can be the gentle introduction to the topic? And I get that no book can do heaven justice since it is such a mystery. I do like the inviting illustration style and that they chose to have the boy come from a biracial family. Kids should be drawn in by the pictures. Recommended for Christian families with little ones who are often fearful or are curious about heaven. This isn't going to be the kind of book that will entirely explain heaven to kids, but it will open up conversations. It is meant to be read with someone more knowledgeable who can take the conversation further.

This beautiful book is perfect for young readers to flip through and read, either together with a parent or on their own (depending on age). The text is simple, but thought-provoking. The illustrations are gorgeous and very colorful. There is a lot of diversity shown on the pages, and the scenes are ones that will appeal to most children, featuring things such as playing at the lake in summertime or enjoying an ice cream cone. Drawn from the lyrics of the MercyMe song, this book brings it down to a child's level and reminds them that God is always with them.
This title is a re-conceptualization of the song (and now movie) I Can Only Imagine by MercyMe. It's authored by Bart Millard with Laura Neutzling. I am only passingly aware of the song by this title and I have not seen the movie - neither of which is necessary to capture the essence of this children's picture book.
First let's start with the artwork. The images are crisp, bright, colorful featuring joyful scenes centered on some of life's most cherished moments. The artwork is by Sumiti Collina which effectively captures the everyday moments of joy which (hopefully) are present in children's lives.
The story is told from the perspective of a child who is contemplating the question, "What will heaven be like?" These imaginings cover the range of human experience from eating, playing, sharing friendship, dreaming, worshiping, and simply being in God's presence. These all help to cast a hopeful and joyful look to the future of believers in Jesus.
The one caveat is the absence of the hope of resurrection. With the resurrection of Jesus as the first fruits, the Christian church confessed and held to "the resurrection of the dead." In an odd sort of juxtaposition the book imagines a myriad of physical experiences which are anticipated in an apparently spiritual heaven. This seems to reflect the present common hope of heaven which can be absent from physical resurrection. The physical restoration of the fallen and groaning creation is a central biblical theme that could stand more contemplation and proclamation in our present times. This physical restoration and resurrection is perhaps even more difficult and astonishing to imagine, but God does not surrender his creation to corruption.
Even so, this book accomplishes the task of calling believers to imagine their joyous future.
One of our church members gave our little one this book because MercyMe's "I Can Only Imagine" is one of my husband's favorite songs. But this book is NOT a picture book containing the word-for-word lyrics of the song. It's merely inspired by the song, taking you through a child's imagination about what heaven could be like.
"I can only imagine, what God thinks is fun. We could jump in the lake and soak in the sun, Splishing and splashing and shouting, "Hooray!" Would God like to float on a warm summer day?"
For about 2/3 of the book, typical child-like questions are asked: What do we eat for breakfast in heaven? Is there a playhouse there? What games would God play with me? But the last few pages always gets me teary-eyed it says that the best part of heaven will be spending time with Jesus and being with Him forever.
This book is written in rhyme, with only four lines per page/spread so it's perfect even for young restless readers. The illustrations are simple and cute, with what looks like a mixed-race family including his friends of other ethnicities. Overall, we love this book! It's a great way to start talking and imagining with your child about heaven and what it might be like. But most of all, this book is a great reminder for parents and children that JESUS is the best part of heaven. Not the ice cream, not the mansion, not the absence of pain or suffering, but being there with Jesus!
“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also." John 14:1-3
I Can Only Imagine (Picture Book) A Friendship with Jesus Now and Forever By Bart Millard with Laura Neutzling Illustrated by Sumiti Collina
What is Heaven like? What does God do? Have you ever wondered this? With natural curiosity, most have at one time or another wondered about that which cannot be seen. I Can Only Imagine is just such a wondering.
I Can Only Imagine has a wonderful flowing rhythm that paired with the illustrations offers the reader a soothing and peaceful story that allows the message of the book to be absorbed more fully.
When reading this book I was reminded of the passage from John 14, specifically verse 3, "I go to prepare a place for you..." And this wondering and imagining of just what this place in Heaven is like is expressed here. This book is the perfect read for bedtime or just a snuggle time together in a favorite chair.
There are 21 pages of text with a few additional pages that are just illustrations so it is a good length for shorter attention spans and yet not too short. The illustrations are colorful and cover an array of settings both indoors and out, day and night. I Can Only Imagine is one book you will want to share with all the young readers in your life opening up their minds to their own imaginings.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book through BookLook Bloggers with no expectations of a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This beautiful picture book will capture your family's childlike faith and imagination, inspired by the hit song I Can Only Imagine by MercyMe.
We love the song, so I was curious to see what the coordinating picture book would look like.
Turns out, this sweet book helps kids think about all the wonderful aspects of heaven and what it will be like to spend all that time with God...and then encourages them to see that God can already be seen and experienced every day, even now!
My 5-yr-old loved this book from the first read and I can already tell it will be one she returns to constantly.
Its playful illustrations and thoughtful questions lead children to ponder all the wonderful aspects of what heaven will be like and really imagine what life will look like then.
I feel this book is wonderful for all ages. It would make a lovely gift book for anyone experiencing the loss of someone close to them or who is struggling with big questions about life after death. It is the perfect book for encouraging children to develop a close friendship with Jesus, now and forever.
I received a free copy of this product as a member of The Booklook Bloggers Program in exchange for writing a review. All opinions are my own.
Bart Millard of Mercy Me has taken their hit song "I Can Only Imagine" and turned it into a beautiful children's book where a young boy is trying to imagine what life might be like up in heaven. And of course, it's completely from a child's point of view, which is sweet and endearing: swimming, baseball, giant ice cream cones, and more. The child is also enjoying life here on earth with friends and family and a very adorable dog.
What I love best about this story is that it applies the concepts of God being all around us and that there is a heaven in a way that is going to make more sense to kids than just reading verses out of the bible. It brings the ideas more to life in a more concrete way. And the illustrations are truly beautiful.
This will make a great addition to your child's library at home and could also be used in Sunday School. It's really pretty.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for providing me with a requested review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a fun picture book. It goes through a lot of the fun questions children have when thinking about heaven. If you have ever been around a child, and talked about heaven with them, they have tons of questions about heaven and who God is and what we will do in heaven and what God does in heaven.
What I really appreciated was the ending of this book. Yes, there are fun and interesting questions about heaven and God, but the books ends with how we don't have to wait until heaven to spend time with God. I felt that this enabled the children to not just be waiting for heaven to have a relationship with God but instead begin that close relationship here and now.
I received this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
This story is beautifully crafted with delightful illustrations in which the child is asking questions about his relationship with Jesus. Just what will it be like in Heaven? Will Jesus play with the children? What does God think is fun?
With each page, you have the opportunity to "imagine" with your child. This book requires a perfect location for snuggling up. The discussions are only limited by the number of times you snuggle and read. Sweet moments of lovingly helping them know the Love of Jesus will be the best moments of your day or evening.
A story based on the popular song “I Can Only Imagine” by Bart Millard of MercyMe. A child asks questions about the idea of heaven. What will heaven be like? What will it be like to be with Jesus? Will God have a dog?
The message of wonder, curiosity and the desire to know God more is so central to pursuing a relationship with Him. I like the emphasis that though we can wonder about our future with God, he is with us right now and we can know him right now.
This is a rhyming story. Sometimes this can feel a bit contrived, but it mostly works in this story.
I love the illustrations portraying evening/night time. They are awash in blues.
Thank you, dear God, for keeping me close. Being with You is what I like most. We know you. We love you. We'll be there together. Each day will be happy in Heaven forever.
Written by the Artist of Mercy Me with their hit song and one of my favorite songs I Can Only Imagine is a board book to discover Jesus together! I have to say theologically speaking, I do have a some issues and my rating reflects that. However, if your family is familiar with the song, this book is a great addition for a family devotion.
A Special Thank you to Thomas Nelson and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post a honest review.
I was given a copy of this title, free, in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was another beautifully illustrated story that we received this month. The pictures are bright and fun. The story takes you through a series a questions that allows you to reflect on what you know about Jesus and imagine what it would be like to be with him daily, in the small ways. It is very appropriate and engaging for kids. My daughter enjoyed looking at the pictures and my son enjoyed the rhythm of the story itself.
I Can Only Imagine is such a rich and colorful Picture Book for children. I would have loved this for my son. The story is quite pert to children. I enjoyed it for myself. We need these Christian themes for our children in the times like these don't you all think? I cannot say enough about this book.. Wonderful job! I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all of the opinions expressed in this review are all my own.
