When Rachel’s friend Holly is invited to cater a radio broadcast from the Grandview Hotel on the fiftieth anniversary of a mysterious murder there, Rachel and Julia come along for moral support. Their excitement quickly turns to dread when they see the state of the dilapidated hotel and are warned to expect strange noises in the night.
But ghostly sounds are the least of their worries after a body is found in the hotel’s library. To her shock, Rachel realizes that this latest murder bears an uncanny resemblance to the older one. With a fierce winter storm bearing down on the hotel, Rachel makes it her mission to discover the truth—about both murders.
This light, cozy mystery offers a clean read with a female amateur sleuth in a small-town setting. No foul language, sex, gore, or graphic scenes of any kind.
Karin Kaufman grew up devouring murder mysteries, especially of the cozy kind. Give her a mystery, a comfy couch, her sweet dog at her side, and (preferably) a rainy day, and she’s in heaven. She’s the author of the Juniper Grove Cozy Mystery Series, the Smithwell Fairies Cozy Mystery Series, and the Anna Denning Mystery Series. The Witch Tree, the first book in her Anna Denning series, was a finalist for a Grace Award. Karin also writes children's books in the Geraldine Woolkins and Woolkins Bookshelf series.
I absolutely love Karin Kaufman's cozy mystery series set in Juniper Grove, Colorado! This 5th one is probably my favorite, although it's hard to choose. Set in an old supposedly haunted luxury hotel, on the very same night where 50 years ago a man was murdered behind locked doors, it's sure to satisify mystery fans.
Once again, mystery writer Rachel Stowe and her two friends, Julia and Holly are on the scene to help solve a murder. They will stay the night in the hotel, along with the owner, managers and a radio show crew to talk about the infamous murder 50 years previous. Soon after they arrive, the storm worsens and they are trapped in the hotel without power. Although, one among them does not remain alive long, and one of them is a murderer. Juniper Grove's police chief, James Gilroy and Officer Underhill are once more on the scene, too.
I love these books! I declare I do. And there are two more coming! So, if you love a cozy mystery, do yourself a favor and buy this series. You won't regret it.
I love this Juniper Grove Mysteries by author Karin Kaufman. Nothing like a good ghost story at any time of year. A radio station is broadcasting at the Grandview Hotel on the 50th anniversary of a mysterious murder there. Fifty years to the night another death occurs. Are the two murders related? I couldn't put this book down for a second. There was excitement and fear on every page. This is one series I never want to see end.
Rachel's best friend Holly has been invited to the Grandview Hotel to provide the pastries for a radio show that will be doing a love broadcast. The radio broadcast is about the gentleman who was murdered in a locked room of the hotel 50 years ago and his murder has never been solved. It is rumored that his ghost still walks the hotel trying to find his murderer. Not wanting to go alone, Holly invites Rachel and Julia to accompany her on the overnight trip. When they arrive they realize how gloomy and dark the hotel actually is as well as awfully cold. Each of the three women are shown their rooms which aren't any better and they are also close to the room that the man was murdered in. After settling in the ladies are introduced to the radio host and crew as well as the room that the broadcast will take place in. That is the murder room of course. Shortly before the broadcast is due to start, everyone hears a sound that sounds like something dragging or shuffling in the cellar. Everyone except Julia and the hotel owner takes off to investigate. When they don't discover anything, they return to the room. Suddenly they hear a woman's loud screaming down the hall. Everyone runs towards the library where they discover the hotel owner dead by stabbing in his back. The murder is identical to the one that happened 50 years ago except the room wasn't locked. Rachel takes charge telling someone to call the police and she explores the library to see if there are any clues. Suddenly the lights go out and the hotel is plunged into darkness. With a snowstorm raging outside, no power and no telephones to call the police, Rachel realizes that they are stuck inside with the killer. Will they be able to contact the police? Will the killer strike again? Is the ghost of the dead man seeking revenge for his unsolved murder? This is an excellent who done it murder mystery with the creepy hotel, a blistering snow storm stranding everyone including the killer, and the power outage making it even spookier. This book is another winner in the Juniper Grove series that has another awesome story and conclusion.
Started out enjoying the series, but after 5 books, Rachel is being to wear on me. She may be very intuitive, but she has gotten to the point where she is overbearing. She may be a very strong minded and assertive woman, and usually, that is not a bad thing, but, at the rate she is going, she is becoming Attila the Hun. Also, those 25 pounds she keeps talking about are not going to go down, but up. She seems to do nothing but eat pastries, and I do mean "s", every day, to the point where it has become disgusting. She should remember, we eat to live, not live to eat. I am still up in the air as to whether I am going to go for #6, or quit before I am completely disenchanted.
Not one of my favourites in this series. When her friend is asked to cater a special event, she and the other two girls are happy to go and lend support. However the event is being held at a place where there had been an old murder. Take a new murder that follows the same details as the old, being cut off by a blizzard and add a mix of guests who seem to be hiding secrets. Can she unravel the events before rescue comes and before either of her friends are put in danger. Well written but this plot has become a bit of a cliché now.
This book is the best book I have read in a long time. From the beginning to the end. The sleuthing and solving of the mystery was fun like a Fox ! The book f!owed smoothly and kept my attention. The characters and their relationships burrowed a place in my heart too. Thank you so much KARIN KAUFMAN for your creative mind in the writing of this book. Keep them coming ! A big fan! ~Janet S.~🙋💜
Once again, Karin Kaufman comes through with the goods! She is amazing. Rachel Stowe is a mystery writer who solves mysteries, the real thing. In Juniper Grove she is known for putting her thinking cap on & looking outside of the box. Hook her up with her friends, Julia & Holly, her police chief honey, & a cream puff & she's on the case. If you like cozy mysteries, then you must read the Juniper Grove Cozy mystery books!
Another excellent mystery in what is becoming one of my favorite series to binge. Karin Kaufman throws out red herrings galore and it's a fun ride with Rachel, Holly, and Julia as Rachel tries to solve another mystery. Can't wait to continue the series in a town where the death toll keeps rising in such a short period of time!
Another great volume in the Juniper Grove Series. This time Rachel and her friends Holly and Julia are invited to a hotel on the 50th anniversary of a murder that took place there. Holly a baker has hopes of a boost to her business through the hotel. While there another murder occurs. It is connected to the murder 50 years ago or is a new murderer on the loose? Another great, quick read in the series!
Scared to Death almost scared me to death: no wonder the title!!! After what was supposed to be a radio program on the 50th anniversary of the hotel popularly known as murder hotel turns into an ugly situation of someone dying in a similar fashion as the one that took place several decades ago, another police investigation is underway and April and her friends are once more in the middle of the whole nightmare. This was my favorite book in the whole Juniper Grove series. .
A new series for me. I loved the setting - Colorado - as I went to CU in Boulder & loved it. I could see an old hotel such as the one found in Karin Kaufman’s Scared to Death (Juniper Grove #5) in a old small mining town. This was a fun diversion for me. It got me out of The Middle Ages. A fun cozy!
A TV ghost story show comes to town to do a segment on a 50 year old murder. When Holly is asked to do the catering, Rachel and the mystery gang decide to tag along, only to find themselves embroiled in the investigation of another, apparently identical murder. A well constructed mystery and all the usual fun brought to you by the Juniper Grove crew. I enjoyed it.
I'm enjoying the series, and this book especially caught my interest, with the 50-year-old murder that seemed linked to the present murder. It was interesting to watch the puzzle pieces come together, and I always enjoy the regular cast of characters. A quick, clean read.
This was playing out like a murder mystery train except it happened in a supposedly "haunted hotel". Karin Kaufman you definitely didn't disappoint me. Onto the next book in this series. I can't wait to start reading it after I get home this afternoon.
While I did eventually figure out who did it before the reveal, I couldn't figure out why. Nice to not know everything after reading just a few pages. Wonderful series, awesome characters.
A cozy series with a 40-something mystery writer as main character -- what a treat! The plot is clever, the setting is beautiful, and the characters are interesting and well developed. I thoroughly enjoy this series and highly recommend it.
I have enjoyed this series so much. This book like the rest in the series are light mysteries and I have found them to e quite enjoyable. There's mystery and romance but they're light and fluff; no sex or graphic details.
This is becoming a great series. Very Entertaining! Love the characters and the development of them. As you read you feel as your part of the story, it is so well written it just pulls you in. Great Reading Everyone!
Wow another great book by Karin Kaufman! I love the mystery no way did I even begin to figure this one! I love Rachel with James gilroy --- they are great!
Another good and clean murder mystery with friends, food, and romance. I can't wait to start reading but then when I get to the end unfortunately its over. Lol
This is a good story with many twists and turns that keeps you reading. The plot was entertaining and I didn't suspect the killer until close to the end of the story.
