I'm not sure why I keep reading Christine Feehan. Every once in a while I'm OKAY with one of the stories, but most of the time her heroes are just abusive assholes. I also don't like the trope she uses in almost every one of her books that most women are bitches and hoes, and only the heroine is a shining beacon of womanly goodness in the world.

So that said, I was not a fan of this one for 3 particular scenes, so spoiler alert.

He also says things like, "you don't decide when this ends, only I do" and when my stated scene #3 happens the entire club stops Anya from leaving. HELLO, she is an autonomous person!

Maybe I just cannot get into it because this hero is TOO damaged? He's pretty fucked up, and two of my stated scenes revolve around that so I get it. But just because I get that it's in character (I guess?) doesn't mean I'm down for it. And Anya is just...boring. But then, a lot of Feehan's heroines are boring now.

Oh, oh, and another thing I'm starting to hate about Feehan's writing? She just ups the tortured past angle (often literal torture) every time I read something new by her. Like, Jesus, let somebody have a good childhood for once. Well-adjusted people can have interesting love lives too, ffs.

Why do I still keep reading her? Ugh, it's like hate-reading but there's also a small kernel of hope each time. *sigh*

Why is it that when I absolutely love a book and just want to jump and shout for everyone to read it that I have such a hard time doing a review for it??? I spent my whole Sunday sucked into the world of Torpedo Ink and did not want to leave it!

Christine Feehan wove such a compelling tale about this group of people, the horrors they have overcome and how they have triumphed. I'm such a sucker for that kind of thing. I like to see people who have been beaten down to a point that would break most people and come out on top. How they turned around and became the saviors of other victims just gets my blood pumping with excitement.

The bond these bikers created in their will to survive is awe inspiring. When Anya stepped into their world, I felt sorry for her at first. She's never had a family or a home. She has never had someone that would stand at her back and fight for her. To see this in this group and be on the outside edges was not easy for her. Who would have thought that it took their betrayal to her that would actually be the one thing that would bring her into the fold?

What can I say about Reaper. I loved him, I felt for him and I wanted him to have his Anya. He deserved her after everything he went through. He deserves to find happiness in a world so ugly. The things he's seen and was made to do as a child is every parents nightmare. The result of that childhood has made him one of the deadliest men, but also a Hero.

This was such a riveting read for me. It is dark and full of angst. It has violence but it also has love. It has evil and it has good, but most of all it has a bond between a group of people that runs so deep it can never be broken. There is a touch of paranormal to this story. Each member of the Torpedo Ink has an ability that aids them as they seek vengeance and saves the weak. I truly can not wait for the next in the series! ARC provided by Netgalley.

**I received a paperback copy of this book from Berkley Romance for an honest review

THIS BOOK!!!

OMG, This is the first book I've read by Christine Feehan.

description

I KNOW I KNOW!! Where have I been! All the books she's released and this is my first?!! My only excuse is that I must have been living under a rock! BUT HALLELUJAH I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT!!

This book has made me want to backtrack and read everything she has ever written!

It's been so long since a tormented alpha has captured my heart in such a way! Judgment Road is a beautiful action packet erotic novel that pulled me in an captivated me.

Torpedo Ink is a brotherhood. This is not your typical biker book. This brotherhood is bound by more than just the leathers they wear. They have survived such unimaginable hells... Be forewarned this is your TRIGGER WARNING. This book is not for the light of heart. It is dark, it is gritty, and it is so beyond amazing. The author blew me away. Each member of Torpedo Ink is so complex and so fascinating I was enraptured. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. There was never a dull moment, and that's saying a lot for me. Especially since this book is 400+ pages. And that still didn't seem like enough... I wanted NEEDED more.

Bikers
Sex traffickers
Unconditional love
Self-discovery
Revenge

This novel truly has everything!

We're introduced to everyone of Torpedo Ink. If you're familiar with Christine Feehan you'll recognize some old friends. (For the rest of us, it's going to make you want to read the books they're in because if you're like me you need to know more about these characters) Feehan's writing is seamless and you CRAVE all the info, all the details, and all the backstories that go with it.....(It's a MORE MORE MORE situation Because it never seems like enough! These characters will steal your heart!)

"These broken, damaged individuals weren't quite so broken or damaged when they were together."

In this first installment, our hearts are swept away by Reaper & Anya.

"This man was too complicated for her. Too scary. Too sexy. Too everything."

Getting to "see" Reaper learn what it is to have kindness, compassion, and what love really is in his life outside of his brotherhood had me mesmerized. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.

"A beautiful, troubled man, forged by the fires of hell, ravaged by monsters."

If you're like me and gravitate towards the "all in alpha" this book is for you! If you're unfamiliar with what I mean, I mean... The man that instantly stakes his claim. Instantly offers protection, is domineering and controlling (because he knows no other way) that takes you on an erotic freefall... no parachute, no protection but you know, YOU JUST KNOW that you'll reach such immeasurable hights at its climax (pun intended)and KNOW that once the amazing journey/novel concludes, we'll love him even more than you did at the beginning. More than you ever thought possible... That maybe, just maybe, other book boyfriends will be measured against HIM

Then there's Anya... I don't want to say too much about her because it seems like such a spoiler. You should discover Anya and Reaper the way the author intended because its such a beautiful smoking hot story that I could never do justice. Just know that when Anya is around, Reaper knows a peace in his soul. A calming happens to the raging monsters that dwell within him. Watching the demons slowly subside the closer he bonds with her is nothing less than beautiful. I am truly in awe of this author and this captivating romance.

You think you know tortured alphas...
But you don't...
Not until you meet Reaper...
Judgement Road puts such a new and fresh spin on one of our favorite genres.
A MUST READ for romance fans everywhere!
This will undoubtedly be one of my favorite and most recommended MC series. I can't wait for you guys to read it!

I've been on the hunt for a great MC series and book for a while.
Reading the blurb I was super pumped to give this one a spin. I was devastatingly disappointed.
I wanted to like both Anya and Reaper so much but couldn't.
Reaper experienced unthinkable abuse as a child, and carried that with him into adulthood. My soul ached for him and longed for redeeming qualities but there weren't many to be found other than he's loyal and fights for what he believes in. There is a HUGE difference between being a dominant male and being an abusive, controlling prick. He was much more the latter. He called the shots on how long their 'relationship' would last, he left bruises and thought they were sexy, controlled every sexual encounter even using force.
And Anya loved it. She constantly referred to herself as a strong woman, but she had his fingerprints tattooed on top of her bruises at his request. She allowed him to speak to her and forcibly take her in any manner he chose.
They never once had protected sex, even though it was mentioned, by her, they should. She was made to toe the line of everyone of his hard no's but he didn't respect hers.
There were so many scenes that contributed to my utter dislike of the characters and the book in general.
-The MC thought Anya might be a plant so they brought her in for questioning. Reaper restrained her while another brother tortured her to get the truth from her. She forgave them.
-Reaper woke up to sexually and physically assaulting Anya. Instead of maybe deciding to step back and concentrate on trying to heal herself then maybe his deeper wounds, she was concerned about him and even went as far as sleeping on his shoulder right after it occurred. She was so battered the MC president wouldn't let her work so they wouldn't be portraying the 'wrong image' at a biker bar.
-Reaper decides it might be a good idea to find another woman to help him overcome his sexual demons so he doesn't hurt Anya again, and even goes so far as meeting this woman, in his room, at the compound.
-Anya walks in on this encounter, and, even though Reaper wasn't actually going to go through with it, she decided to leave based on what she saw. Every single club member stood in her way because they were 'family' and if she was hurting 'they all were hurting'. She allowed herself to be manipulated by them into hearing Reaper out then she had another sexual encounter with him within hours.
There were inconsistencies throughout with the club. There appeared to be supernatural abilities held by each member, on missions if appeared they were able to communicate telepathically, but they were all constantly in communication via text?
None of this was ever described or explained. Just 'talents s/he learned at the school.'
I was provided an ARC of this book by netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This review was originally posted on Addicted To RomanceI received this book for free from Berkley Publishing Group in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Judgment Road is a sensational edgy and raw romance that brings together two tortured souls who find redemption and a love they never imagined....

What a story and so intense!! Of course, this is Christine Feehan and I am never surprised with what books she puts out, they are ALWAYS intense, but this book had a different feel to it and I loved everything about this book. I was curious before grabbing this one, how Feehan would be able to handle a biker romance and SUPERB!! That is all, this book exceeded my expectations and more. I just have so much love for this author, and this book is evidence of how talented she is. Now Judgment Road is an extension of two previous series and I love the connection between the two series and this charming coastal town that I would love to visit in real life.

The key players in this amazing romance are:

Reaper, a man that is tortured by the sins of his past, who has had to commit acts to save the family he adopted as his own and to protect himself and defend the men and women he would give his life for. Reaper is a fighter, and a protector but is rough around the edges.

A beautiful, troubled man, forged by the fires of hell, ravaged by monsters.

Anya is on the run, her life is in danger and she is in hiding. She grew up on the streets, went to bartender school to make a good living and is dang good at what she does. But she is independent and doesn't ask help from anyone. She is strong and resilient and courageous.

So this book was simply so emotional and what a ride this story turned out to be!!! I just couldn't put this book down and I wouldn't ever want to either. What I was really intrigued by in this story was the way that these characters pull together and the family of "torpedo ink" and the close bond they have for each other.
'I can't. I need a man whose first loyalty is to me. I want him fierce with his protection of me and our children. With you, the club will always come first, and I understand. I do. I just can't live with that

The story begins when Anya starts working as a bartender in the Torpedo Ink bar. She keeps to herself and works hard. But there is one man among the Torpedo Ink brothers that scares her....Reaper. She thinks that he hates her especially when he tries to get her fired. Reaper has always had the job of protecting his brothers especially their leader and would do anything for Czar and his wife Blythe. He knows that Anya is hiding something big, and he doesn't trust her or her secrets. But there is a danger surrounding them, and when a neighboring club comes to them for help in rescuing their leader's wife who has been kidnapped and is probably being raped and tortured, they need information. Information that is needed to rescue the innocent woman and Anya has that information. There has been a great connection between Reaper and Anya, but their relationship is fragile. And Reaper makes a decision that may make him lose her forever.....
He needed her brightness. He needed to see himself the way she did. He could be that man because she believed he was that man

WHAT  A STORY that this turned out to be and I was blown away by this book and I never wanted it to end. Like seriously, Christine Feehan....this book could have been 600 pages or longer and I wouldn't want it to end. There was such a riveting feel to this book and these characters just tugged at my heartstrings in the most poignant of ways. I will say that this is edgier, now if you are used to Christine Feehan's style of writing than you will love this book. However, if you are new to her and aren't a fan of darker themes, this book probably won't be for you. Because it does deal with some tough subjects and it's just not the type of story that everyone would love. It's not light or fluffy, its edgy and raw but so riveting and I can't share enough my love for this story.

My heart just broke so much for Reaper and Anya, these two just need love and affection so badly and I just wanted to weep for these two and their situation. But what was most remarkable about this book was seeing their relationship blossom so beautifully and the ways that they learn to fight for each other. It's not easy for either of them, but they never give up on each other, no matter how terrible it gets. I was swept away by their bond, mostly because you see their pasts and how much they have suffered and seeing them trying to build something new and experience building a relationship which neither of them have ever done before so of course, they will make mistakes. But they work through these mistakes and only become stronger for it.

This is a story that will break you, it will wreak havoc on your emotions, but it will also deliver the most precious, tender and poignant romance you could ever pick up!! A TRUE JEWEL!!

This is a dark book with lots of triggers: mental and physical abuse, rape, torture, pedophilia and very descriptive violence. Some parts are hard to read/get through.

Torpedo Ink MC is comprised of Russian immigrants who escaped from their “home.” They were stolen as toddlers after their parents were murdered, raised together and tortured into becoming assassins for their government. Horrific things were done to these kids to remove all emotion from them. The MC is compromised of 15 men and 2 women. They each have their “specialty,” they can communicate telepathically and most have some supernatural “gift”.

Reaper is the MC Enforcer. Since leaving Russia a few years ago, he has no interest in women or sex. He lives for riding and fighting. He is a complete and total control freak with many, many, psychological and emotional scars.

Anya Rafferty is a bartender at the Torpedo Ink’s bar. She is hard working, a good bartender, outgoing yet guarded and kind hearted. She was raised by her mom, mostly in shelters, got her GED on her own and paid for bartending school.

When she starts working for the bar, Reaper is immediately drawn to her. He’s reeling since he’s never had an emotional reaction to anyone before, so he attempts unsuccessfully to get her fired. They both eventually cave and more struggles begin.

Blythe, Czar’s wife, seems to be the one positive note in all this. She’s the calm in the storm, the light to their dark. Everyone looks to her for guidance.

SPOILERS:
I’m on the fence about this book. I had things I liked and a few issues. I liked that this MC had 2 fully patched women. I liked that this group of people escaped, stayed together, supported each other and made it a priority to hunt down and “take care of” pedophiles and save the kids involved. I wanted to kick some ass when this group tortured Anya and no one tried to stop it. In fact, Reaper secured her to the chair. And she eventually forgives him, and them?! WTH?!

At 462 pages, this is a LONG book. It was like a train wreck. You can’t look away, and yet you‘re distraught/sickened by the carnage. I wasn’t left with any warm fuzzies after reading this. This is my first book by this author and I’m not sure if I’ll be looking for the next one in the series.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC provided by NetGalley and the publisher.

I was amazed to discover this was my first book by this author. I was convinced I’d read not only one but several of her books. But I checked (that’s how sure I was) and no this was my first.

So this is a dark read. The past this group share is truly horrific. I liked the fact that they’ve survived as a unit. They’re united (for the most part) and lethal. Parts of this book were riveting, I just couldn’t put it down.

It was darker in places than I’m happy with. But then I’ve found good MC books have a tendency to be dark.

It was long. That’s not a detriment. I like a book I can get lost in. But this was repetitive and annoying. I don’t need to be told in nearly every scene that Reaper can blend with the shadows. I got that after the first time. And all the...he doesn’t like me. She deserves better than me. Drove me nuts and don’t get me started on all the sex.

I’m intrigued by this group. And despite the repetitions I’m moving on to the next one.

It also felt like this wasn’t the first book. Have these characters appeared in another series?

Judgment Road by Christine Feehan is the first in Torpedo Ink series and also my first book by this author (I've found a new one I'm looking forward to reading more from 👍)
It's a biker book with a difference ok so there's plenty of hot steamy naughtiness 😉 but there's a dark and heartbreaking side too.
This book shows us a little bit about how they became a biker family (the dam right heartbreaking bit) and how they all have / use their special abilities and the loyalty they have for each other.
This one to start the series is about Reaper The Sergeant at arms/Enforcer and Anya The Bartender and their dark path to happiness.
I'm definitely looking forward to reading about the rest of the bikers and yes I definitely recommend this 📖

I tried this because I've liked Feehan's paranormal books in the past, but this book didn't work for me at all. The two main characters were unlikable, as well as the MC secondary characters. They way Reaper spoke to and treated Anya disgusted me, and at one point in particular made my blood boil. I tried to overlook his attitude and behavior because I thought there would be some character growth, but I couldn't bring myself to care if there would be after the tipping point. I'm sure many will enjoy this series, but I'm certain that I'm not one of them.

Judgment Road is the first book in a new series and it is gritty and very dark, far more than I expected. Right off the back I have to say that if you are prone to triggers I would be very careful reading this story. There are some tough subjects in this story and if you aren't comfortable with it then don't. For me it was a very powerful and emotional dark story for a band of people forming the Torpedo Ink MC, and how they are transitioning into regular life. Reaper is the enforcer of the group and is a hardened trained assassin and protector of their leader. He's trained his body to not react but when he sees the new bartender, his body comes alive with a strong physical attraction. Anya is attracted to Reaper and on the run from dangerous people, newly hired as the new bartender at their bar. Their love story isn't easy and has some serious bumps to overcome, but in the end, it is a very fulfilling story when an anti-hero gets a chance at love and good in his life.

Reaper and the others that make up the Torpedo Ink MC are hardened trained assassins and have never been taught the normal, common sense ways of forming relationships and behaving. Reaper found it extremely hard to process these feelings he was having and how to express them to Anya, without making a total mess of it. It was important for this to be conveyed throughout the story because this wasn't the norm for them and how they had each other's back and wanted to make changes. Anya was a tough character and didn't have it easy either with her past and no family for her to count on. These two characters did some major growing and knew they had to take baby steps in order to have a chance at a good life together.

Judgment Road is a well-written story with its dark edges and angst. Its gritty subject matter isn't for everyone but I felt it was worth the tears and heartache because it was a good story and the characters are worth getting to know. Christine Feehan is taking this series a place I haven't been before and I am all in on this one. I'm definitely looking forward to more stories in the Torpedo Ink series.

*4.5 Stars*

This was a tough one to rate for me because I liked 98% of the book but there were a few things that bugged the shit out of me. First let me say that I did really enjoy most of the book. Feehan + Motorcycle club? What's not to like? I was a little surprised she started with Reaper simply because from what we saw in Bound Together he seemed like the most messed up member of the club but once I was introduced to Anya and saw how they were together I realized that it had to start with Reaper. The other club members need to see that he could make it to be able to have hope that they could too. Seeing Blythe and Viktor wasn't enough because they all consider Viktor the best of them so they still don't believe they could find love too. Despite what I'm going to put in the spoiler tab at the end here, I did really like both Reaper and Anya's characters. They complemented each other. Anya was especially impressive because of the all the shit that got thrown at her but she stayed strong. I'm looking forward to the next book, my prediction is it will either be Alena's book or Code's, but I might be way off.

4.25 Stars rounded down to 4 stars

Has a lot going for it but had to deduct .75 stars for all the repetition.
This is the 2nd time I have read this author and she did the same thing in the other book of hers I read. Though it wasn't quite as bad in this one.
Feels like she either uses it for filler or thinks her readers are idiots.

All the characters are very intriguing. Great suspense and action.
Super hot adult scenes.
The main characters of this one, their interactions etc, were fantastic.

I'm intrigued enough to want to read the next.

There are 'Hints' towards supernatural 'Gifts' but never really spelled out that way.

I'm a huge MC book reader. When I saw Christine Feehan was writing a new series, I didn't hesitate to request it. I'm glad I did.

Judgment Road revolves around the Torpedo Ink Motorcycle Club. This club has males and females. Both females are full-fledged participants. All of them are Russian. They met while being captive in a place where despicable things were done to them. Now, they have made Sea Haven their home. They are a lethal club but they try to remain away from any trouble unless trouble comes looking for them.

Reaper is the MC's enforcer. He's great at his job. He can kill without remorse and he's ready to die protecting his club. They are his only family. He does care for the President's wife, Blythe. She and her adopted kids are all under the club's protection.

Reaper has a hard time relating to anyone who's not part of the club. This is why he can't understand at first why he's at the club's bar night watching from the new bartender from afar, Anya. She's sexy, he'll give her that but no woman has stirred any emotions from him because he has not let himself lose control.

Anya is happy bartending at the club's bar. She's living in her car and is trying to make enough money to get a new place for herself. She had to run away from her last job after she overheard something she shouldn't. She admits to being intrigued by Reaper but he also scares her. However, when she learns he's threatening her job, she loses her temper and lets him have it. This begins an explosive relationship between these two.

I'm going to comment on the things that bothered me first. I thought Reaper was a tad too possessive. He wanted to make all the decisions in their relationship and that could get boring. I understood why things needed to be his way but still after a while, it would've been nice to see that Anya was able to put her foot down on things. I also didn't like what the club agreed to do to her and hated that Reaper didn't protect her from it. I understood why he didn't go against his club but still, I didn't have to like it.

Now to the things I liked. I love how close this group of Russians were. They pretty much could read each other's thoughts. They worked so well together. Seeing them in action was impressive. I also liked that two females were part of the MC and they were both lethal just like the guys. Last, I like that they had a purpose as a club and I was on board with it.

I can't wait to read the next one. Bring it on!

Love, family, is worth the struggle…

It is always a red banner day when a new Christine Feehan title hits my kindle! I know I’m going to be diving into all the things including intriguing characters and an emotional story I can sink my teeth - and heart - into. And my heart was totally invested in Reaper and Anya’s story, a roller coaster ride of discovery and acceptance. Of course, when you are dealing with this group of men and women, including cross-over characters from the Sea Haven/Sisters of the Heart series, you know there are going to be additional challenges thrown in!

Reaper is an enforcer in the Torpedo Ink MC group of brothers and sisters. It is an incredibly tight-knit family of the heart created by horrific circumstances and loyal to the core. Reaper is steel tough. He will protect his family with everything he has and has no time to smile, to love. When Anya crosses his path he doesn’t know what to do with her, or himself….

“He was so fucked. He had to stay away from Anya Rafferty.”
“He could barely breathe when he looked at her.”

Anya was the complete opposite. She cared about those around her and yearned for family. And love….

“Why would she want the one man who had more issues than she did? And she did want him. Desperately.”
“Her body was going up in flames, but it was her heart that had her worried.”

Reaper was cold as ice but having Anya, keeping her, meant he had to open up, be more. That journey, for both of them, meant revelations, pain and sacrifice – and all of it hard won. From one scene to the next, they were going to be challenged in what they believed in and held true. It was brutal, painful and also hopeful as they knocked down one huge problem after another.

This action and emotion-filled story filled all the nooks and crannies it needed to get me out of a lowly book funk. I’ve already re-read this again as I read it so fast the first time around I needed to experience it again. I had to enjoy it one more time before shelving it on my “go to/re-read” shelf. ~Diane, 5 stars

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

3 stars

Thoughts and Plot

I'm settling for 3 stars on this book because while I enjoyed this book, there were a few places that I wasn't okay with what was going on and how it was resolved. I also wasn't rushing to finish this one. Sometimes I also felt like it was a never ending romance...and it totally leaves itself wide open for continuations with other club members. In fact, I think there is a blatant set up going on in this book for another book down the road. Not everything was resolved, like it should be a hook. Only I don't think I'm hooked.

That said I should actually get to telling you the 'why' details.

Torpedo Ink is a small motorcycle club that is situated in the middle of Diamondback territory (big motorcycle club/gang). Reaper is an MC Enforcer. His job, protect his brother and leader, Czar, and to take out the trash. He's good at it. He's been doing it for a very long time. About 100 pages in you start to get a picture of exactly how long he's been doing it, and why. That past has left him a wreck, with PTSD attacks that often happen at night when he's sleeping. He holds it all close to himself, and hasn't been with a woman in years.

Enter Anya. Anya is on the run from something. You get that much almost immediately. She took the job at the biker bar because she needed the money and some place to hide. Her attraction to Reaper is subtle, but you learn that she was attracted to him immediately. And for both of them, it was purely physical, chemical attraction. As a result Reaper wants her gone because she does things to his self control that he cannot allow (or so he thinks).

When Czar refuses to fire her (making Reaper make the call) is when things really get going. In the same night she is harassed, then stalked by three wanna-be bikers. Reaper steps in and shit happens.

My serious issue with this book is a major spoiler, so don't click on this spoiler if you don't want a decent chunk of the plot spoiled for you. Just know that I was severely annoyed by this and firmly believe the romance woulda and shoulda stopped there.

This is what Anya has to say about what the result of my major issue with this book

"-I can't. I need a man whose first loyalty is to me. I want him fierce with his protection of me and our children. With you, the club will always come first, and I understand. I do. I just can't live with that.'"

Seriously girl? I would have had a lot more to say, starting with "WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE???" Just saying...

Another thing I didn't like was this weird thing were Christine Feehan writes the same thing in 3 sentences. It's weird. It stuttered my reading every single time I came across it.

I didn't like to obvious set up for another book with Pierce...

The last thing I didn't like that ended up annoying me for the rest of the book (thank goodness it came later in the game), is when Anya goes from a smart young lady to a TSTL girl in .3 seconds. No one is that dumb. When you are in a room full of enemies (and you know they are enemies), you don't go walking by any of them within arms reach when you have a perfectly clear exit off to your right. Doesn't happen. I repeat, no real person is that dumb. Anya shouldn't have been that dumb either. This was an obvious plot device to find the rat and I din't like it one bit. Don't go having a semi-smart woman (she lost smart points the the major plot spoiler reason) that you are continually telling me is 'so smart' and 'observant' and 'quick on the uptake'do something that incredibly stupid. 3 year olds are way smarter, it's basic survival instincts at work...rating loss there.

That said, there are a lot of good qualities about this book. I liked that everyone from the original club members have these subtle abilities. I wasn't expecting a hint of paranormal abilities to show up like that. I didn't mind the sex scenes, although they didn't really do anything for me because Reaper had to be such a control freak. I liked how all these characters had these tragic back stories (sucker for heroes with terrible pasts) that they had over come...for the most part. I liked how the author wrote out these parts. I liked quite a few little things about this book. Just not everything.

In Conclusion

Decent book. I don't really know anyone who I would think to recommend this to just because I know they would have the same issues with it as I would. Maybe if I find someone who likes overly controlling males... I might try the second book when it comes out. I might not.

Sinfully desirable, sexy yet heartfelt. Judgment Road by Christine Feehan is a great read for those who love a little danger, and an intriguing story. Judgment Road is the first book in the Torpedo Ink series. A series I am now greatly anticipating.

Torpedo Ink, is an outlaw motorcycle club who have set up shop near a beach town. They are not your typical MC club, they are so much more. Not only do they each have certain talents, but their bond goes beyond brotherhood.

Reaper is the enforcer for Torpedo Ink. Moody, sexy, and outright dangerous, talk about your alpha male. He is brutally violent and always aims to kill. He has one job, and that is to protect his president at all costs. Reaper, a long with all the members of Torpedo Ink had been raised to kill. His first instinct is violence, when he first spots their new bartender he immediately goes on alert. There is something off about her and he can’t put his finger on it. There is definitely an internal push and pull, he is extremely attracted to her and that right there is reason enough to want her gone. A man like Reaper will never find happiness in a woman, and he most definitely is not out looking for one. Little did he know that meeting Anya Rafferty was going to be the biggest battle of his life.

Anya Rafferty, was on the run. Beautiful, smart, and talented, she figured landing a job at a small biker bar would keep her out of the limelight. At least until she had enough money to run again. After hearing that Reaper wants her gone, she panicked. Not knowing what she had done to make the enforcer mad, she wanted answers. Anya went looking for answers and found herself in a relationship with a man that was completely broken. A man who put his family, his brotherhood above all else. Could she really fall in love with a man as dangerous as Reaper? Not only was he dangerous, but she soon figured out she would always come second to Torpedo Ink. Anya could oversee almost anything, and was willing to fight this battle alongside Reaper, as long as the ending result was to live a life next to the man she loved. But even she didn't expect, what was in store for them.

Judgment Road has all the angst and action we would expect in an MC book, but it is also heartfelt and sweet, the perfect mixture. It will have you at the edge of your seat, wanting to know what will happen next. You will fall in love with all of the members of Torpedo Ink, not just Reaper and Anya. Christine created a family, definitely not typical, but a family nonetheless. One that I can not wait to keep reading about. She gave us enough backstory to keep us hooked for the long haul. Her writing is impeccable, and the book flow is spot on. Although she gave us a HEA, I cannot wait to see what she has in store for us as the series continues. A definite must read!

4.5 stars, can not wait for the next installment in the Torpedo Ink Series!

Judgement Road was a very emotional and poignant reading experience. The story has all the elements of romance that I enjoy: relatable her and heroine, action, adventure, beautiful setting near the ocean. Being the setting around a motorcycle club, Judgment Road is not a lightweight read. Most of the main and secondary characters have suffered unspeakable losses and abuse. The world of MC is dark and suffering interspersed with broken people trying to cobble together a family and community. It makes it difficult at times to enjoy romance where the suffering of innocent women and children is the backdrop of so many lives.

This is why it was so important to have a main character who is so well-written as a heroine. Since Anya Rafferty come from outside the sphere of the Torpedo Ink world, she brings such a breath of fresh air, even though she is running from a dangerous threat to her. As a child who grew up in shelters with her mother, Anya has learned how to deal with surviving and thriving on her own. She seeks the dream of someday having a loving family of her own and that dream always seems just out of her grasp.

The hero, Reaper/Savva Pajari, grew up in Russia wherein he and several of the Torpedo Ink children formed a lifelong bond that was forged in horrific sexual abuse and physical trauma. Reaper has given up any hope of redemption and notion of love…until he sets eyes on the new club bartender, Anya. No matter how hard this hardened man fights his attraction to this newcomer, Reaper is inextricably pulled towards Anya’s bright spirit. She is strong, compassionate, sympathetic, and self-reliant. Best of all, Anya has the strength and the gravitas to connect with Reaper on an intimate and emotional without dragging him down under the weight of her own problems and insecurities.

Instead of Reaper having to rescue her, she is his shield, which is very refreshing considering her aloneness in the world. I related with Anya because she never resorted to damsel in distress mode. When the Torpedo Ink club members, wrongly suspected her motives and subjected her to a painful mind test, Anya advocated for her power and was ready to walk. It took Reaper, and the club members, to do plentiful groveling and mea culpas to win back her trust.

While it was nice to see Blythe settling in with all of her and Victor’s passel of adoptive kids, this was primarily Anya’s and Reaper’s story. Another highlight was the relationship between birth brothers, Savin/Savage and Reaper. It was so heartening to see the younger brother’s absolute loyalty to his older brother. I was also very intrigued with the spark between Alena, full patched female member of Torpedo Ink and rival club member, Pierce. That would present some huge obstacles if those two hooked up and it would be awesome to see them maneuver through their respective obligations. These insights into Savage and Alena’s current lives and the Torpedo Ink members trying settle whetted my appetite for the next book in the story arc. Very well done.

***I received an ARC of this book in order to provide an honest review***

3.5 stars - maybe 4?

I had an interesting time with this book. For starters - I was in a mood. I started 7 books in a day (made it to 22% on one) and gave up on all of them until I started this one. Also, contemporaries, with their jangly writing, all tell and no show, and one-dimensional characters, make me itchy. However, I found something that I didn't know I was looking for when I started this book.

"His soul had been gone so long ago that he couldn't remember having one. Now, his heart was slowly disappearing."

Reaper is an MC Enforcer. And he's a big old mess. Not some surface bullshit. Dude is a legit wreck. He starts digging on Anya (but totally resents it). Anya kinda likes Reaper too, but has nooooooo idea about the responsibilities and rules of being with an MC man. The book was Reaper-heavy. Anya was a cool heroine - but the story mostly reflected her as she related to Reaper.

"'I can't. I need a man whose first loyalty is to me. I want him fierce with his protection of me and our children. With you, the club will always come first, and I understand. I do. I just can't live with that.'"

I seriously liked parts of this book. Didn't want to put it down (it's been a few books since that's happened). Some of Reaper's words and actions gave me the fun flutters. He is a hell of a damaged hero.

There was a lot of steam and the sex scenes didn't squick me out. There's also a teeny tiny PNR element. I look forward to seeing where Ms Feehan goes with that in the subsequent books. (Also - Ms Feehan writes repetitively - she'll say the same thing in 3 adjacent sentences. Kinda weird til you get used to it).

Big fat HOWEVER...There was a thing that happened in this book that I'm not sure they could have (should have?!?!?) come back from. I didn't appreciate the way either of them handled it. With a different approach there this may have been a 5 star read for me.

"He needed her brightness. He needed to see himself the way she did. He could be that man because she believed he was that man."

(I believe this book is a spin-off from one of her Sisters series - there were references that I didn't fully catch)

Surprisingly, I liked this.

Safety:
Hero was def celibate. He did not have sex with anyone as soon as he escaped his former assassin school so he has been celibate for a looong time. The heroine is the first woman that he has been attracted to.
Heroine was also celibate

Hero was sooo into the heroine, even with all his emotional baggage and PTSD and the author made me believe in his need for the heroine. The heroine also had a chance to run away but she’s so into the Hero too.

I liked the premise of the mc, Torpedo Ink.

Technically, I think the book is too long. I skimmed some parts. Other readers may like the level of detail but I got sleepy in some pages. I still finished it though and giving it 4 stars coz I enjoyed the whole thing overall.

Judgement Road is one of those books that will keep you up all night. At first, I felt a little confused. Like perhaps there was a prequel or something that I missed. But, you catch up pretty quick, and the story makes sense! Anya was a heroine I loved from the start. She is a kind of 'boot and rally' girl. Down on her luck but determined to make a better life for herself. You can't help but root for her. When the girls were mean to her, I cried. Like Anya, I think many women have experience bullying from other women and it always is so upsetting. Women face so many issues that when we turn on each other, its even more crushing. I was glad to see this was addressed and rectified.

If you are sensitive to certain topics, you might want to check out the trigger warning. While I think Feehan handled the topics with appropriateness, this book is full of tragic events that could be upsetting to some readers!

Reaper is exactly what I expect when I hear motorcycle club. He is hardened and will kill without compunction. The club is 'clean' in the sense they don't run drugs or anything,  but they are hired assassins. You get some of the backstory about how all these men grew up and its so sad. The abuse they went through is heartbreaking. Even though Reaper was cold and, at times, cruel, it felt true to his character and understandable.

There are some people in the club with some unique psychic abilities. There is a turn of events where these abilities are used on Anya and I was like "Oh hell no!". I was so enraged! Trust broken!! It was this huge violation and I could not believe it. Its such a huge turning point in the story. The action really picks up after this and the focus becomes saving the wife of another MC president as well as Anya. There is also a few bumps in the 'relationship road' for Anya and Reaper. The man is totally clueless and takes advice from other, equally clueless men. The ending felt a little off to me. I wasn't expecting THAT to be the end of the book. A little anticlimactic perhaps? I'm not sure what exactly felt off, but it just felt unfinished to me.

Ok, y'all know I love my maps. So, initially the author mentions Highway 1 up the coast. So, I instantly think California. But then she mentions Fort Bragg and I think North Carolina. So, I turn to Google and discovered there is a Fort Bragg in California. And also, the city the club is in is a real place! (I'm a geography nerd. I could stare at maps for hours! When I was little and we went to vacation, we had an atlas of all 50 states. I spent hours just looking at that thing! Directionality is my superpower too. I can tell you which way is north, south, east, and west from just about anywhere I happen to be. Pretty lame 'superpower' but whatever!)

So, here is the area the book is set in. The club resides in Caspar, CA. Next, I have expanded the map so you can see where it is in relations to other places in CA.

Judgment Road has rocketed to one of my favorite reads. It is a sort of spin off of the Sea Haven series and I am totally going to binge on that series next! I might just change my Author Love Challenge to Christine Feehan!!!

POV: 3rd
Tears: yes, parts of the story are so emotional it just made my eyes leak!
Trope: MC club
Triggers:
Series/Standalone: stand alone
Cliffhanger:
HEA:

Beautiful Killer by Sherilee Gray, Rocco by Sarah Castille, Fear the Beard by Lani Lynn Vale...then you will probably like Judgement Road!

Christine Feehan is an author that constantly appears on my radar, and I’ve been meaning to read one of her books for a long time. As I have a weakness for motorcycle clubs – all the angst and drama that surrounds them – I decided to give Judgment Road a read.

From the start, I had trouble with this one. The writing was incredibly repetitive. Within the same pages – in some cases paragraphs – and it could have easily been cut with a good editor. For an author that is so popular and with so many books under her name, I found this really strange. Nevertheless, I persisted in the hope it would serve a purpose.

As the book continued, the repetitiveness lessened slightly, but it never faded. However, something else grew to annoy me. There were so many details that were not explained well, so many elements that left me unsure of what was going on in the world. This could be because this series links to other work by the author, and I would have understood these details had I read them, but I would have liked some explanation. Those words used to restate the same thing over and over could have been used to ensure new readers understood the world.

Sure, the story had some addictive elements. However, there was far too many things that were left open for me to enjoy this one. I know it’s the first in the series, but there were elements related to this couple that were deemed closed after a single sentence, even though it didn’t really close anything.

I guess the popularity of the author had me expecting far too much. As it was, Judgment Road failed to sell Christine Feehan to me.

This is a strong 4+ MC book. Torpedo Ink is a club with a very different background and purpose, which allowed for many of the unusual aspects of their life.

The story starts out as a normal "day in the life", but the tensions and conflicts emerge quickly yet with subtlety. The traditional "brotherhood" is extra-strong with this group, with good reason. Anya is an outsider who wins over the hearts of the club members, although the process is quite painful for everyone.

Although there are references to the wild and crazy parties and sexual openness, there are no explicit sex scenes except for those with the main characters. But people do forget to knock. The scenes with the main characters are intense, and there are hang-ups to overcome. The final scene is outstanding. There is no "dark" sex or BDSM in the main story, though there is much terror in the back-story.

There is a lot of tension and drama in this story, but not a lot of angst inside the club. Everyone is true to their nature, and they do the right things, even when it's very much the wrong thing. In addition, these guys and gals are smart and deadly, which gives them many more options.

All-in-all a unique approach to the genre, and I will read the next one.

When Christine Feehan announced this new series I was so excited and she didn’t disappoint me. I loved JUDGMENT ROAD! Hot bikers with paranormal abilities, danger and smoking hot romance make this series addicting. The Torpedo Ink MC is made up of survivors from a brutal Russian training facility. JUDGMENT INK is emotional, raw, gritty and has darker elements. There were times the story made cringe and want to cover my eyes rather than read the emotional scenes. Christine Feehan is a master storyteller and always delivers a story in a way that makes the reader feel like the story is coming alive and I felt a full range of emotions while reading this one. I’m hooked and can’t wait to read each club member’s story. I recommend this series for romance lovers who enjoy a dark storyline and biker romance lovers will definitely love this one.

I got the ARC of this book from netgalley for an honest review . This was my first MC book. I love the sisters series but was disappointed by the last book because I felt it was more a opening to this series than closing of its own series. That could be the reason I didn't really like this book .
I feel like Ms Feehan's heroines are becoming weaker in all her series. I did not like Anya at all, she was too weak no backbone at all . Not sure how I felt about Reaper , I know he went thru a lot growing up he could have treated Anya better. I also felt that the book was more about the club than the couple , they seem to be a second thought

Oh, how I loved a TORTURED hero, and this book delivers.

Reaper is a member of Torpedo Ink, a small MC with his brethren from his childhood. He had a tortured childhood in Russia, and he and 17 others escaped to make this new life. He falls in love with Anya, a woman on the run. Of course, he's TORTURED and he tries everything he can do to push her away at the same time.

The plot of this is so bananas! I seriously have to tell you that Reaper does the SHITTIEST things, and yet, I wanted them to be together. The fucking, the fighting, the over the top drama. I loved it all.

I didn’t enjoy reading about the flashbacks of severe childhood trauma so I’m lowering my rating. The flashbacks were written well.

Unlike most CF’s this h had a backbone. lol I wanted her to have more of a backbone concerning a certain scene in ch 9.
