Pirate's Curse: Division 1

Rate this book
Once upon a time, a vampire and a witch fell in love, and that love fractured the world. Now divided into sixteen isolated Divisions, the world is an unstable and dangerous place.

In the Division of NOLA, Catheryn Beauregard fears her burgeoning magical powers. Hiding as just another slave in the home of the Hoodoo Queen, Catheryn hopes her simplistic powers will simply go unnoticed. And her plan seems to be working...until the Hoodoo House is attacked by a ruthless band of vampire pirates.

Captain Rainier Dulocke and his crew need humans to feed on. In an act of desperation, they beset the Hoodoo House and take ten slaves to sustain them. Rainier takes a girl named Catheryn for himself, but her blood is giving him terrible side effects. Still, he refuses to give her up. Even when the Hoodoo Queen demands her return.

The NOLA Division is in danger. The waters are rising. Food is running out. And the Hoodoo Queen is about to destroy everything that's left if the pirates don't meet her request. Now Catheryn must choose who will the humans who sold her, the witches who bought her, or the vampires who stole her. If she fails to decide, everyone could die.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

When Leigh Anderson agreed to send me an e-copy of the Pirate's Curse I was over the moon. I'm positive that vampire stories will never stop attracting me and this book seemed special because there aren't only vampires in it, there are vampire PIRATES and that fact just doubled the level of my excitement.

With Pirate's Curse I received a nicely packed bundle of adventure with twists and turns at every corner. It was a highly enjoyable read.

Catheryn has been a slave to the Hoodoo Queen most of her life. However, when the pirates come to ransack the Hoodoo House she'd rather stay, because there are worse fates than serving the Queen. But when she catches the eye of the famous Captain Rainier she doesn't have a choice. She is dragged onto Rainier's ship and she is expected to give her blood to prolong the Captain's life.

She doesn't expect him to be as civil as he is.

He doesn't know that she cannot satisfy his hunger.

What I enjoyed the most was that the story never slowed down, there wasn't a boring part in it. One moment Catheryn and Rainier are battling at sea, the next they are stranded on a deserted island, the next they are fighting off a pair of giant spiders in the jungle... And all the while we get to know more and more about both characters. It turns out Catheryn has starnge abilities and she has to learn how to use these new-found powers. Rainier starts feeling worse and worse and he has to come to terms with the changes that are going on inside him...

Of course eventually the girl and the vampire will have a joined purpose but in the beginning they don't know that and they bicker a lot, obviously. Later, when they realise they should work together, Catheryn and Rainier support each other through every hardship and are so open towards one another that I became addicted to reading about the relationship that formed between them.

I especially approved of how Rainier mentored Catheryn when her abilities surfaced and how lovingly concerned he was because the girl couldn't see herself for who she was. He wished Catheryn to believe in herself like he believed in her and that was extremely romantic.

I loved the feminist undertone that manifested itself throughout the book. Catheryn saves Rainier's life countless times and by the end of the book she is physically stronger than the Captain – and the writers made sure we notice that. Yet, this doesn't influence the quality of their relationship in any way, on the contrary, Rainier is proud of Catheryn's achievements.

A world where humans, vampires and witches live together must not be the safest place ever, nevertheless I liked to escape to NOLA from my safe little nook whenever I had the chance to push reality in the background.

Even though the ending felt a bit rushed, I had so much fun reading through this story that I found it didn't really matter after all. Once again, thank you, Ms Anderson!

I have very mixed feelings about this book... Though I liked how it ended, wrapping up in a nice HEA (which I strongly appreciate as it IS a standalone), there were a lot of problems I had with it, especially around the middle.

Let me start off by saying the world is intriguing, though could definitely have been expanded upon more in this book alone. The setting itself wasn't very vivid most of the time and I felt frustrated by the lack of details which had me constantly conjuring up my own vision of things only to have it dashed later on as to what things looked like.

Though the first of the book starts off good, clear conflict, clear antagonists, a willy protagonist, a hot dude, etc, everything just seemed to fall flat. Catheryn went very quickly from being TERRIFIED of this vampire captain to literally nearly sleeping with him. In fact, she WOULD have if he hadn't of passed out from drinking her blood. Hm. If this had been closer to 1/2, 2/3 through, I could see it, as it'd give more time for them to get to know each other and for her to see him as less of a monster.... but it happened around 30-40% in, and though she seemed to have a few moments of attraction before that she still VERY CLEARLY thought of him as a monster, and she seemed to have NO intentions of making herself available to him.

That instance threw me off for the entire middle of the book, especially as she went in and out of being totally scared of him. If she had of come around to him sooner, this would be less weird, but since she didn't... it was weird... bordering on kind of gross.

Anyway, I ended up being okay with their relationship, which of course I knew I would be since Rainier is very charismatic and obviously cares a lot about her. It was mostly Catheryn I took issue with who seemed very back and forth, and not in a normal way, more like bipolar.

Other than some problems with the characters, I enjoyed the plot, even if it was quite predictable.

A delightful read

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it all in one night. It’s a story about a young woman who sold herself into slavery to save her sister and was captured by a vampire with whom she fell in love.

I loved how we get to see Cateryn’s development and bolster in confidence as the book progresses and it wasn’t just an immediate thing. She grew into herself and her acceptance of her responsibilities with her newfound powers. Rainier, I loved him. I loved how the author made him an emotional man, not sappy, mind you, but a man who wasn’t ashamed of expressing his emotions to the woman he loved.

I loved the easy tit a tat between the H and h and found myself grinning at their exchange for the duration of this book.

There were a few grammatical errors here and there. Thankfully, it did nothing to hinder you from enjoying the story. I look forward to the next book in this series and recommend this book to anyone looking for an enchanting paranormal romance.

3.7 stars!!!

It was a nice - quite unique read, haven't read anything about pirates from ages then as bonus you get vampires and witches.

I was into this book from the beginning at first it put me off how the main hero treated humans as they were nothing to him...

I get vampires need to drink blood but to drink them dry till they were dry husks not nice but then slowly he redeemed himself.

Both characters were a bit annoying with their feelings they confessed to themselves that the other means a lot to them but then constantly they were doubting if it's true...

I did like the anticipation building slowly with their chemistry but when it came to sex I was surprised it was there as it seems more YA to me... it was there but it was quick and bit meaningless to me 1.. 2... 3... BOOM! DONE! continue with the story... then it happened again but still no sparks... wish there was more feelings and chemistry but maybe it's just me LOL

I felt like the end of the book was rushed it was funny how long it taken the hero and heroine to travel one way but the way back was so quick that there was even no description of it one second the island the next their main destination hmmm....

But I liked it it was funny as well just wish there was a bit more especially more about Rainier how and why he became the pirate?

Why was he scared to be human week? Had something happened to him to make him fear being weak?

What I love about this book was the fun between characters, the slowly growing love and trust... the famous enemy to lovers :-)

This is the 1st book I’ve read and reviewed for Leigh Anderson and it was absolutely fantastic. This is the story of Catheryn who sells herself into slavery to take care of her sister, she is also a witch but she tries to hide that part of her. Rainier is the captain of his own ship and is a vampire and he captures Catheryn. I loved this story and I also had a laugh as well, Catheryn isnt just your typical slave and the banter between Rainier and Catheryn is absolutely hilarious. Fantastic read, there’s action, adventure, magic and love, with vampires and witches and that in itself makes for a very interesting story. I just couldn’t put the book down. I definitely recommend this book to anyone that loves vampires and witches.

I enjoyed the story. The characters and romance are different from what you typically see and I wasn't sure how it would all end.

I really liked that you got the story from both her and her point of view. It made it easy to connect to them and the story.

I enjoyed the fact while the characters are paranormals that they have the same insecurities and desire to protect and love as anyone else. They are not superheros that can solve everything and have faced great losses.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received. .

What a crazy and fun book to read. It had action, pirates, vampires, magic, crazy powerful "people" and random stuff that made me say what? I was hooked from the first chapter and loved it. Made me laugh a few times too. It started out with attacking pirates and got better. I loved how Catheryn and Captain Rainier Dulocke interacted. They made me laugh. Catheryn is not the typical slave and made the story just that little bit better. I thought the story was good and had many funny scenes to entertain me.

A different kind of pirate novel. These are vampire pirates, and in this world are witches as well. A witch and a vampire are falling for each other, but will it work? I enjoyed the characters and their differences described by Anderson. I thought the book had a great plot and overall flow. There were some grammar issues, but nothing to really hinder the reading experience.

I received an arc of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.

First, let me say that I received an adance copy of this book from booksprout to leave a review. Second, I only leave a truthful review of my reading.

So, with that said, on to the review. This story was gr8. It's been many years since I read about pirates, they were my favorite genre about 35 years ago. Even though this story of pirates is a little more futeritic\sci-fi. I can't wait to read more about the Berkano Vampire collection. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up

Set in a magical cataclysmic earth dimension, Pirate's Curse is a good start to the Berkano Vampire Collection. Different from other urban fantasy type books, PC gives the reader with a chilling thrill ride as we follow Catheryn, a slave with special abilities, and Rainier, a vampire pirate, on their adventure.

Unique paranormal read

Wow, this story was so different than any of the other books I have read on vampires and witches. You have Pirate Vampires, witches with humans as slaves. Can a Vampire and witch really be together? Can they fight the Queen Witch? Can Catheryn find her sister? Can they all stop fighting each other? I received an arc copy for my honest review.

Interesting concept

This is the first book I have read by Leigh Anderson but I have read many by Rebecca Hamilton. I loved several different concepts that were put into place in the story line. The world building fits perfectly with other books from the collection that I have read.

A little skeptical.....

I was a little skeptical about reading this book but I will say it was pretty good. The book was about vampires and witches but also about courage and believing in yourself. Very good book with a great storyline.

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW. Pirate's Curse: Division 1 is the first in a new series by Leigh Anderson and Rebecca Hamilton. This is my first Leigh Anderson read and I loved it. You can feel the Rebecca Hamilton influence in the story telling, but whatever the collaboration, this is a book worth reading. It's kind of Pirates of the Caribbean, Hunger Games and Charmed combined with LOTS of action thrown in. I really loved the way the characters were developed throughout the storyline with dips and crests in their strengths and weaknesses. Catheryn is beautifully written and easy to admire. Rainier is boldly aggressive and then hauntingly fragile in his ... wait a minute, this is a non-spoiler review. Sorry guys, you'll have to read it to find out. But trust me this is a book you want to curl up with and put out your do not disturb sign! This is a Mature read, but there are no graphic, prolonged sex scenes.
