This really does list the basic, essential artists and recordings, However, the LP compilations included are now supplanted by various CD compilations, especially in the case of pre-war and pre-LP material that existed in scattered, non-album format. The problem with a book like this is that the neophyte can get the wrong idea: sticking to a rigid "canon" in approaching the engagement or collecting of jazz, or any genre, is often a guarantee of disenchantment. I like to discover the lesser known, because I often prefer it. You won't get much of that in this book. Otherwise, good for what it is.

Still working my way through listening to these, but the perfect guide.
