“Change only comes when you truly want it. Embrace how you feel and things tend to work out.”

Who is the Hero?
Joey Kim, Age: 30, Occupation: Private Investigator
~ Joey works at a detective agency with his life long friends. He has a sweet, but energetic German Shepherd named Karma, who is a “former” police dog.
-
Who is the Heroine?
Teagan Bevon, Age: late 20’s, Occupation: Manages Patter Feet - a childcare center
~ After she found her husband in bed with her best friend, Teagan packed her bags and moved from Denver to Chicago.
Plot overview:
~ Joey and Teagan have been neighbors for about six months. If Joey knows he’s going to be gone for an extended period of time, he will ask Teagan to feed/walk his dog Karma.
It’s now midnight and Teagan knows Joey has been gone since early morning and she can hear poor Karma whining. She figures the dog needs to be let out, so she decides to do the neighborly thing and help…
~ “I have a key to his house, so it’s not like I’m an untrusted stranger. All I’m going to do is feed Karma, and maybe let her outside for a bit if she has business she needs to tend to. Nothing sinister or arrest-worthy.”
Joey’s house is cold, so Teagan decides to do the nice thing and light a fire. Unfortunately, just as she is about to light the fire, an exuberant Karma jumps on Teagan and the lit match flies out of her hand and lands on the couch. An out of control fire quickly spreads and before long Joey’s house is completely engulfed in flames.
~ “I BURNED YOUR HOUSE DOWN!” I scream into the phone and am finally met with silence. “Joey?” I whisper, fearful he already hung up.
“Can you repeat that for me?” he finally gasps out. “I …”
Now I feel nervous. “I … umm … I accidently”—I use too much emphasis on the word, making me sound extra guilty—“burned down your house.”

The following are my thoughts about this book:
**
* * just like the other books, I felt like this investigative agency was a bumbling mess. They never seemed to be able to get information on the bad guy. Once again I thought it made them look inept and more like they should stick to surveillance on cheaters rather than a difficult case. I think that’s part of my struggle with this series - the private investigators just seem to be lacking actual investigative and technical/hacker skills.
* * German shepherds don’t slobber and drool, so it annoyed me when Karma kept being described in this way.
* * Karma - Oh how I loved her. She was a full grown, abysmally behaved dog that you couldn’t help but love. Seems like she might have “flunked” out of Police K-9 school. 😊
~
“She would growl at douchebag clients. That’s why Zander kicked her out. Well, that and I’m pretty sure she could only sniff out a bomb if it was wrapped in bacon.”
~ “She has an adventurous streak about her,” Harvey defends. “Joey said she’s a retired police dog. I thought maybe she got to a certain age and had to retire. Now I’m wondering if she wasn’t fired.”
* * like all other books in this series, it’s only told from the female POV. Not my favorite, but especially in this one I got much more of a “telling” story than an actual “conversational” story. Therefore, I struggled with the connection between Teagan and Joey.
* * I liked the friendship that developed between Teagan and Harvey
~ “Joey may not be a safe choice for my heart, but Harvey has been an excellent choice for my soul. I don’t care what he thinks. That man is going to be my best friend, and that’s that.”
* * I had some questions that I didn’t feel were fully answered
* * The books in this series are starting feel very similar. Same pattern for every plot. It doesn’t usually take me a week to finish a book, so clearly something wasn’t fully engaging for me.
I usually prefer to binge read series so I can stay connected with the characters. But for whatever reason, I feel like that strategy is hurting my opinion of this book.
**Overview:**
- Content Warning: hinted at sex trafficking, but not explicitly stated
- Setting: Chicago
- Do you need to read previous books in series?: technically this is a standalone. But I think anytime you have supporting characters who were from previous books you should read in order. Especially when those characters are a significant aspect of the supporting cast of the current story
- POV: female POV only
- Tropes: suspense
- Hero likeable? yes
- heroine likeable? yes
- h virgin? No
- First time they kiss: 58%
- First time they sleep together: 79%
- Safe sex? Yes. Condoms were used
- First time they say I Love You 99%
- steamy? Not much. although they had a few sexual touches/feels before the actual bedroom scene, it was a long, slow burn to the bedroom scene and it wasn’t overly steamy.A page, maybe 2 of the actual bedroom scene.
- Chemistry? I found it lacking. The female only POV didn’t help this aspect
- OW/OM drama? A little bit, although Teagan was never interested in the other guy.
- H/h cheat? No
- Time apart? No
- Did I skip pages? No
- Big secrets? No
- Did I cry? I got a little teary eyed around 97%
- Did I laugh? Not really
- Did I swoon🥰? Not really
- Cliffhanger? No
- HEA? Yes
- Epilogue? Fifteen months later
- Recommend? I think the general similarity in each book is starting to make it feel repetitive. So rather than moving on to the next book right away, I’m going to take a break and come back to this series later.
Quotes:
Your penis isn’t that magical,” Joey snaps.
“You know that for a fact?” Dec asks on a laugh. “Yes, I do. Because my own penis is magical, and I’d sense if someone else with my skills was near,”
“I’d rather eat glass and wash it down with lemon juice.”
“His name is Dale, not Dull,” Conner says with a glare.
“It should be Dull. That man is less interesting than a sack of potatoes.”
“Turn your brain off and just enjoy the ride. Sure, it might crash and burn, but worrying about that is just going to spoil the ride. You might as well be happy while you can.”
