The epic third installment in the Elves series dives into the mysterious origins of the Dark Elves and features the return of the heroes from Vol. 1.
Silent and ruthless killers, the Dark Elves are a notoriously deadly race. Whether a Dark Elf is born Blue, White, Green, Red, or Gray, their true nature is revealed within just a few years. Impulsive and temperamental, Gaw'er has never fit in with the other Blue Elves. When his true nature comes to light, the young elf is taken from his family to begin a long and painful apprenticeship with the Dark Elves. But one night, he awakens to a strange, ominous noise—one that strikes in him a fear like no other.
As the days dwindle and the nights lengthen, corpses begin to appear at dawn in the northern city of Aspen. The strongest warriors are the first to fall victim, and then their bodies mysteriously vanish. Aspen’s regent has no choice but to implore Aamnon, the king of the Northern Blue Elves, for help. In response, Aamon sends renowned detective team Lanawyn and Turin to lead the investigation. Will the duo be able to figure out what’s slaughtering Aspen’s greatest warriors before it’s too late?
Insight Editions is excited to introduce the third volume in the internationally acclaimed Elves series, which features epic tales of mystery, horror, and mysticism. Translated from the original French and featuring show-stopping artwork, this enchanting graphic novel will thrill fans of high-fantasy classics!
"Elves" is a French comic anthology project: each "issue" is by a different writer-artist creative team about a different fantasy race each one invents. This volume collects two stories and finally clarifies beyond small reference that they do all indeed take place in one world. It is also the first that isn't lopsided in quality.
The first story, "The Dark Elves" is about someone being forced into the life of an assassin at a dark elf school and has a lot of fun with the concept and manages to keep the protagonist likable even as we see him do things like partake in cutting down his fellow young students. I actually look forward to another issue continuing his story. Vivid and expressive art work throughout.
The second story, "The Blue Elves' Mission" is a slight step down in quality: it returns the elf-human duo protagonists from the very first story but gives them a plot that is just the right size for the storyline, a fantasy version of Night of the Living Dead where they have to investigate a town in the icy north where everyone has disappeared. Unfortunately, they remain fairly non-characters, especially to the assassin of the first story, but the supporting cast is fun (I like the tiny orc necromancer who inexplicably speaks very modern.) The solution to the problem at hand also feels a bit easy and one part of it (the fight trance) doesn't really correspond with anything foreshadowed. Once again, excellent art, very detailed.
"The Dark Elves": 4/5 stars "The Blue Elves' Mission": 3/5 stars Overall probably the easiest one to recommend for those interested in trying the series.
I really - really deeply love these Elves books. Its sad only 6 books came out as 3 paperback formats. It would be great to read the rest of these in english.
Como los dos tomos anteriores, una gran calidad de dibujo y unas historias que me gustan mucho. Están creando un mundo y unos personajes muy interesantes. Seguiré leyendo la colección.
