Defiant Queen

Rate this book
The Mount Trilogy continues with Defiant Queen...

I’m his entertainment. His toy. Payment on a debt.
I tell myself I hate him, but every time he walks into the room, my body betrays me. How can I want him and fear him in the same moment?
They told me he’d mess with my head. Make it go to war with my body.
But I didn’t realize it would be complete anarchy.
I should’ve known better. When Mount’s involved, there are no rules.
I will not surrender. I will not show weakness. I’ll stand my ground and make it out of this bargain with my heart and soul intact.
But he has other plans . . .

Defiant Queen is the second book of the Mount Trilogy. Mount and Keira's story concludes in Sinful Empire.

Every time I think I have her figured out, I realize none of my normal barometers apply when it comes to Keira Kilgore. She’s the exception to everything I thought I knew.

Dear mother of GAWD. I'm obsessed! OBSESSED with this trilogy. It's like it was custom written for me. I want to slap someone with my kindle right now, it was so good. Yes, this is perfectly normal. Quit side-eyeing me.

I have the worst book ADD when it comes to trilogies. Never has one kept me as completely riveted as The Mount Trilogy. Never. I thought I was hooked after Ruthless King but that was nothing compared to what I was feeling after finishing Defiant Queen. I devour and I mean devour these books in one sitting. I cling onto every morsel of information about the mysterious and deadly Lachlan Mount. And I fall even more for the hard-headed, independent, and sassy Keira.

Defiant Queen was just as perfectly paced and action packed as the first book, if not more. We get more details of Mount's past that helps paint the picture of why he's the man he is today.
If there were a scale to determine the purity of a person, I would send one side crashing to the ground with the weight of my sins, and laugh while I watched.

Meghan March has written an anti-hero to beat all anti-heroes with this man and I will NEVER get enough of his domineering and sexy ways. Secrets are revealed, twists and turns come out of nowhere, and what started off as a debt, soon turns into something much more complicated for both Keira and Mount.
I finally understand the reason it’s called power exchange, but with Mount and me, it’s more accurately termed a power struggle.
He takes. I fight.
He threatens. I rebel.
He taunts. I argue.

The heat is downright incendiary with this installment. And I mean INCENDIARY. The story was downright addicting. And the ending? ABSOLUTELY INFURIATING.

So if you'll excuse me, I'm off to rock myself in a corner somewhere until the release of Sinful Empire.

‘DEFIANT QUEEN:’ is the second book of the Mount Trilogy by Meghan March and picks up right where Ruthless King left off. Spoken in ‘Dual Perspectives’.

In this we see a different side to Mount emerge which we didn’t really see in the first book, he was all hard corners and ruthless in this we finally get to see the man within. I loved reading about his childhood, what set him on the course he’s on today. So many layers to him like an onion each chapter we peel off another layer.

The majority of my life is lived in shadows. People whisper my name, as if afraid saying it out loud will bring me to my doorstep.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Mount had been abandoned on some church steps, quickly put in the system, shoved from foster home to foster home until he made his escape and clawed his way up from the gutter now he's a ruthless cutthroat powerful man no one deceives.

I'd been in such a book funk and nothing seemed to have been able to pull me out of it, until this book!!

Even though I'd been forewarned about the cliffy that was going to come rushing at me I can honestly say I wasn't prepared for how big that cliffy was going to be, it could turn out to be a whole new game changer, now that shitty waiting game starts of needing, wanting the next book, and I for one can not wait!!

This was only ever supposed to be sex. Repayment on a debt owed. But it has spiraled out of control, and now I’m terrified it’s becoming something else entirely—which is impossible.

While ”Ruthless King” focused on Keira’s story, in ”DEFIANT QUEEN” we get to know our sexy and domineering alpha male, Lachlan Mount. I enjoyed this one so much more than the first book because, to be honest, Keira is an incredibly annoying heroine and Lachlan doesn’t become an integral part of that story until it’s almost to the 50% mark. In book one Lachlan seemed to be cold and calculating and it was hard to get a good read on the person he truly was on the inside, but we will learn in this installment that he was born into a dismal existence where he never knew what it was like to grow up in a safe and loving environment. All he’s ever known is the depths of cruelty that people were capable of. His abysmal beginnings are what helped drive Lachlan to become New Orleans’ most ruthless and powerful businessman.

Lachlan is perplexed by the feelings he’s developed for Keira. Never has a woman gotten to him the way she has. While he finds her stubbornness to be a turn on, it started to grate on my nerves. It seemed as if she was purposely fighting him on almost everything just to come off as a woman he will never be able to tame.

Business associates are starting to notice that Lachlan is losing some of his focus and that Keira might just be his weakness that can be used against him. He tries at times to put some distance between them but his heart is already deeply invested and he’ll do anything to make Keira his for the long haul. Lachlan sets a plan in motion to win Keira’s heart by sweeping her off her feet with grand gestures. It ends up softening her heart but also confuses her at the same time because she believes she is nothing more than a passing whim to Lachlan.

Just when the two are discovering their true feelings for each other, we get slammed with another huge cliffhanger of an ending. Someone’s life seems to be in jeopardy, but I’m not revealing who. You’ll just have to one-click this book to find out.

Here are my overall ratings on the book:

Heroine: 3b>
Plot: 4
Angst:3
Steam: 4
Chemistry Between Hero & Heroine: 4

The King of NOLA and his Whiskey Queen!

We all know that New Orleans is a city full of tough people. The people there are hearty and have lived through a lot! They have had hurricanes, even before Katrina, they have had rumors of Vampires even before Anne Rice, they have witches, Voodoo, Santaria, haunted cemeteries and pick pockets and all sorts of crime during Mardi Gras.

But the real underworld of New Orleans is run by the King, Lachlan Mount. Nobody does business in the city without his say. Not the Cartels, the Gangs, the Mafia, the Feds, The Cops, and certainly not some low level con man that came to town and married Kiera Kilgore right out from under his nose.

Mount took care of that problem once but Brett didn’t stay dead so in this book Lachlan gets his chance to take care of Brett in a more permanent way. This book is every bit as good, if not better than Ruthless King. Kiera still continues to fight Mount at every turn because she doesn’t want to be owned by any man. Mount knows that Kiera is submissive and doesn’t see the problem.

I guess he just can’t see the difference between being dominant in the bedroom and taking control of Kiera’s whole life. But in reality he loves that she stands up to him and would be bored with her if she just gave in and let him push her around. That is what makes it so good. For the reader as well as for Mount and Kiera.

This book ends in a huge cliffhanger, which has to do with some other storylines that come up in the book but I don’t want to give too much away. I will say that the romance is just as steamy as the first book. There are multiple storylines, and they are all very interesting and involved, so it definitely is holding my interest and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

3.5 Stars!!!

This is the second book in the trilogy and I found that for me it was slow starting. I think it was mainly because I had read the first book back in November so it took me some time to remember the little details. Usually this is why I try to wait until a whole trilogy is out before I read it!! My memory isn’t what it used to be!! Plus I read so many books, I tend to mix some up etc..!!

As far as the writing goes, it was great! I love all of Meghan March’s books and this trilogy is definitely included in the ones I enjoy!
At the end of this instalment we are given another cliffy!! This time I’m happy to report I can continue on the the conclusion of this trilogy!!! I am diving in immediately!

"I was a fool thinking I could take her, fuck her, and keep her in a little box on a shelf like any other toy."

A captivating read!❤️

This amazing author worked her magic once again to deliver another mind-blowing read in the Mount Trilogy. Ruthless King rocked my world and the second installment Defiant Queen, took me to a new level of intense ride. Loved it with passion and couldn’t put it down. Difficult to talk about it without giving anything away. Just know this book has it all. Great storyline, action, secrets, romance, passion and freakin' hot sex scenes - like seriously scorching HOT. Keira and Lachlan are incredible characters and their story is perfectly told. Kayla is strong and sassy and my favorite type of heroines. I enjoyed watching her give Mount as good as he gave. We do get to see some of Mount’s past and it was good to have an insight into what made the infamous Lachlan Mount the man he is today. He’s captivating, I loved him. I enjoyed that this powerful and dangerous man hadn’t factored into his twisted plans the beautiful, passionate and determined woman that will thwart all his plans and worm her way into his heart. I don't think I'll ever get bored of reading about him! And the ending left me in utter chaos and I am now anxiously and impatiently awaiting the final book in the series.

Keira Kilgore
We're Irish. We believe in fate. The right man will find you, and he won't let you go when he recognises what he's got.

Athough this book is called Defiant Queen, Mount is the one that mainly tells the continuation of the story and thinks of his feelings. That way, he will be more likable and more understandable for the actions. Obviously he is not that powerful man who cares for nothing. He has weaknesses and insecurities. He will need a few advices.

Mount and Keira's relationship will be more meaningful and their feelings for each other will also be part of the equation. The debt is almost forgotten most of the times that they are together. And when they are together, everything is more intense.

I offered him honesty, and he responded with dominance. Like always.
So, I'll give him what he expects from me. Attitude.

The cliffhanger from the end of book 1 will be taken care of almost immediately, but there will be another cliffhanger in the end of book 2. More shocking.
Yes, book 3 is already in my e-book reader!

Now that I’ve finished... oh boy. This is probably the butt pluggiest book I’ve ever read. At least half of these overpriced chapters has a butt plug mentioned in them. And if that’s your thing then good for you. For me, it is neither hot nor sexy. Just... Ew. Not my cup of tea, sorry.

Mount is still a one dimensional alpha dude who doesn’t know the word “no” if it slapped him in the face, and neither does Keira because she keeps mouthing off to prove she has a backbone (somewhere, but she keeps misplacing it) but ends up doing exactly as she’s told.

I don’t see why he’s so fascinated by her. In this book they are getting to the deeper layers of their personalities but in the beginning it was just a guy who dragged a girl who he knew nothing about by her hair to his cave, screwed her or either thought about screwing her while con-stant-ly mentioning he will “own her ass” some day. At this point I will fuck her in the ass just to get it over with, dear god.

-sigh- And on to overpriced book number 3, the “epic” conclusion to this... thing.

Don't take this the wrong way but I am only reading these horribly expensive novella sized books because I was stupid enough to buy all of them before reading the first one.

This book had absolutely everything I was looking for! Drama, steam, romance, some clichés, mystery, crazy killers and a to be continued… sniff…

Mount was moody, scary, sweet and caring…He was truly perfect. He could scare you and at the same time keep you all hot for him! And Keira was such a kickass heroine! I loved that she spoke back to Mount and wasn’t scared of him like everyone else.

The sexual tension and angst was scorching in this book. I loved the storyline with the intricate suspense plot along with the romance. All the secondary characters are amazing and add so much to the story. You won't want to put this one down. The story pulls you in and refuses to let you go.

It's hard to say too much without giving away what happens, but I promise, you'll be reading hard and heavy sucking this book in. I found it to be exciting and I look forward to finding out what happens next with Mount & Keira.

In short:
Hero 5/5 | Heroine 5/5 | Plot (Point, Originality) 5/5 | Writing Style 4/5 | Steam 5/5 | Romance 4/5 | Angst-Suspense 5/5 | Darkness 2/5 | Humor 1/5 | Secondary Characters 4/5 | Drama-Conflict 4/5 | Mystery 4/5 | Twists 4/5 | Pacing Fast | Action 3/5

Keira Kilgore has become something I never intended, but I make the rules in my world, so there’s nothing fucking stopping me from changing plans now. The best part about being the king? I can do whatever I want”.

Well SHIIIIIIIIIT!! I went into this one with such a full force because of that ending in “Ruthless King” and let me tell you something… I would kill to go through that ending again instead of what happened at the end of this one. I seriously think this author is trying to test us or make us drink more! Whatever the case may be, I know without a shadow of a doubt that if I don’t have “Sinful Empire” in my possession within the next few weeks, I’m going to lose my ever loving shit!

If you’ve read “Ruthless King” then you’re familiar with who Lachlan Mount is and his relationship with Keira Kilgore. If not, then your butt need to stop reading this review and go read the damn book. Lachlan was a mystery for me in book one and the one thing that I was hoping for in this one, was that we were going to be shown just how ruthless and terrible he truly was. I was practically craving it and the minute I read the prologue and first chapter, I was damn near scared to go through the rest because EFF.ME ON SITE. I freakin got it!! They say be careful what you wish for and my wishes are now on hold when it comes to that man.

Told in dual pov’s, this is the continuation and aftermath of what happened when Keira came face to face with her past and the lengths that Lachlan would go through to keep her safe. This wasn’t an easy task seeing that she wants nothing to do him and his corrupted world. But from the moment Lachlan made himself known to her, there was no going back for Keira and those feelings of hate are quickly being disintegrated. With every passing moment, lines are being blurred and for this couple, someone is bound to get hurt.

“I am not a good man. My soul is black. My heart is stone. My reputation isn’t legend or myth but a collection of facts.”

I really loved the fact that we got to see a whole other side of Lachlan in this story. I always wondered what was the Breaking Point that made him into the man who is today and looking back into his past, we got a glimpse of it. But make no mistake, this man has been through his fair share of a hard life and he worked his butt off to being the King of New Orleans, bloody fingers and all. We also got to see him interact more with Keira and I will admit that I swooned A LOT when it came to those simple but memorable moments.

I honestly didn’t think that this series cliffhanger could get any crazier, but once again I’ve underestimated this author and I’m going to do something I’ve never done while reading a book. I’m going to pray for any and all future enemies!! There’s a war coming and in this Sinful part of New Orleans, there can only be one King ruling his Empire.

➦Hokay so. Let me fire it up.

➦Just as a heads up, I will be reviewing all the books in this trilogy in this one review. Because it's just better that way, people. Trust me.

➦Don't be thinking I'm lazy or something. I work hard, people.

➦Well, nothing besides writing this awesome review here, of course. So here is. I think Meghan March is a great writer AND I think she's a smart writer. The first two books were brilliantly done and kept me in suspense. I simply needed answers and could not wait for the conclusion.

➦It's nothing that hasn't been done before, but it was done well. The rich and powerful mafia boss, the beautiful woman who, as turns out, owes him a lot of money. He doesn't want money, though, he'll just settle for HER.

➦May be, but it was also kinda hot. Now, some parts of this book were very very good. I especially loved flashbacks to Mount's childhood. Those are aaaaalways my favorite parts. I even teared up a bit. Having said that...

➦Book three is where it all gets wrapped up. I won't lie and say that I rolled my eyes a lot.

➦Before you slap the crap out of me, people, remember that this is a positive review! :D But anywhatever, it was a bit too much inner dialogue like "I am the baddest baddass and they will all die because I'm the biggest baddest badass and everyone knows it." It was a bit repetitive in a way it was delivered.

➦And the last thing, some logic gaps. At least I, for one, didn't find some things that "explained" plot twists very logical. As an example... Imagine you let your friend drive your kid to school one day. Then imagine this friend gets arrested for doing 105 on a highway. But in her defense she will say, um, something like, "I had a hunch it would be okay to speed like a maniac today." O.O

➦To wrap this up, recommended to anyone who loves mafia/crime romances, but on the light side. Not too dark but extra steamy. And here's my seal. The seal of approval.

def

Title: Defiant Queen (Mount Trilogy #2)
Author: Meghan March
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publication Date: November 14, 2017

Defiant Queen is the second installation in the Mount trilogy. If you've read my review of Ruthless King (Here), you'd know that I wasn't really into Ruthless King unlike some of my fellow bookworm friends BUT I am now finally a convert. I'm gonna hop into the bandwagon and celebrate this beauty of a book!

Defiant Queen was everything I needed from Ruthless King... It had all the badass-ness (if that's even a word hahaha...but we'll take it ok?) and sexiness with the emotions I craved for in Ruthless King.

Mount is still dark, broody, lethal and unforgivingly sexy but atleast now he doesn't feel like a robot anymore. We finally get to see some 'human' emotion from him. And YUM!!! I am in love with Lachlan Mount!
Keira is still fiesty as ever. Love that!
Mount and Keira are THE BOMB in this book! Their chemistry is insanely good and sexier than I could even imagine!
This book is fast paced- filled and sinfully sexy. Don't even get me started on that cliffhanger! That cliffhanger?!OMG!! I need Sinful Empire...Pronto!

Okay, I'm seriously torn about this book. I loved how we got a better insight into Lachlan (yes, I am now going to call him Lachlan now and not Mount lol), what drives him and his past. And there were some really hot scenes. The whole Dublin part was too cute. I really enjoyed seeing how Lachlan and Keira's relationship is developing.

But, on the down side . . . that ending! I can't believe it ended there. I'm really annoyed that it actually ended like that. But will I stop reading the series? No, way. I need the third book. NOW!

I am pleased to announce that within the first few pages, there is immediate relief from the cliff hanger we ended on in Ruthless King.

However, as the title of this indicates, Keira remains defiant to Mount's never ending dominance and demands. And so she should! Keira does have plenty of moments of acquiescence, when Mount gets her so aroused that saying no would be just plain stupid, in fact even forming words would be impossible.

'Facing this man is like taking on a category 5 hurricane. My conflicting emotions surge within me.'

We see another side to Mount in this story, we get more of his back story and how that has shaped who he is today, but we also see a side of him that even he doesn't recognise. He is falling for Keira and is in uncharted waters - he has no idea how to show her how much he cares, without being domineering or arrogant. This will be a huge learning curve for him.

'Every time I think I have her figured out, I realise none of my normal barometers apply when it comes to Keira Kilgore. She's the exception to everything I thought I knew.'

As much as Keira enjoys defying him, there are several moments in this story where he completely blind sides her and in a good way. We also learn that Mounts interest in her was not as recent as she first thought, in fact he may have had his eye on her for much longer, I am sure more will be revealed in the final story.

As these two get deeper into their arrangement there is more risk involved. The usually 100% business orientated Mount is dividing his attention between work and the woman that is changing everything for him. This defiant irish hellion queen is mind fucking him now and while he may be trying to work out what he is doing with her, he doesn't want it to stop.

'I see Keira Kilgore exactly for what she's becoming - the one woman who might be strong enough to stand by my side and rule an empire.'

Sadly though, it does. Oh yes, you guessed it, another mother-fucking cliff hanger..... I will enjoy the anticipation of Sinful Empire - cannot wait!

OMG! Get ready for the build-up of all build-ups! Mount and Keira are back and things are getting even HOTTER, if that is even possible! Meghan March has taken it to the next level with this series and I just can’t wait to find out how this epic romance is going to come full circle! DEFIANT QUEEN is the highly anticipated book two in the Mount Trilogy and you ladies are in for a real treat because if you think you had a hold on Mount after just a taste in book one, you have NO IDEA what you’re in for! We dive into the past with him and it is NOT pretty.

Meanwhile, Keira is more sassy than ever! She is such a strong heroine and such the perfect match for an alpha like Mount. This book begins the war between head and heart, and neither are backing down. If you thought you were left with questions after RUTHLESS KING, get ready for more twists, turns, and trials of the heart in DEFIANT QUEEN. We are one step closer to what I know is going to be one HELL of an EPIC CONCLUSION to the series!

I am not a good man. My soul is black. My heart is stone. My reputation isn't legend or myth, but a collection of facts.

Fast paced, full of rush and adrenaline in all the push and pull struggles and sexy encounters between the king of the underworld Lachlan Mount and Keira Kilgore, the only woman fit to stand by his side...if only she'd do it willingly, if only she'd realized she's right where she belongs, as his queen...but still a defiant one...
I see Keira Kilgore exactly for what she's becoming - the one woman who might be strong enough to stand by my side and rule an empire.

And Mount changes his tactics, instead of completely stripping Keira of any kind of sense of freedom by his possessive control, he lets his guard down and decides to show her a different side to him...that only she is allowed to see...

At some point, you're going to realize this is about far more than a simple debt.

But then...just when we are somewhat lulled by the sensation of a different Mount, the overwhelming passion betweeen them, the merciless world of Mount's doesn't sleep, and is spreading its evil tentacles...just enough to reach right where it will hurt him the most...

And fuck me with that cliffy again...

Defiant Queen starts off after a big shocker that ended Ruthless King. Diving right back into the story we get to see how Keira and Lachlan are handling each other and how Keira is doing after getting such a big shock.

This serial has not slowed down at all throughout these two books and I love that about them. Serials are always a little iffy for me because I find that inevitably one of the books will be very slow and seem more like filler to keep the story going. But I definitely did not have that issue with Defiant Queen and this book had me captivated just as much as the first one.

I might even have liked it a little more since we got to dig a little deeper in Lachlan and who he is. I liked getting more of the focus put on him so we could see his motives behind things. Bottom line though, both of these characters are great and I can't wait to get the conclusion to their story.

Why have I not picked up Meghan March before??!!

This storyline had me on the edge of my seat! Savoring every word like it was my favorite dark chocolate. March is beyond talented in weaving a story!

Picking up where book 1 left off the relationship continues to evolve between Keira and Mount. Mount has sought unsolicited advice on how to properly "woo" a strong, independent woman. We see as they progress Mount truly deeply loves Keira, however all his dominance in the beginning may prove to forever hinder his desire to have Keira for always.

Keira sees a side of Mount in Dublin which completely throws her off. He smiles, he laughs, he dances, he is hearing her desires and is helping her reach her goals with Seven Sinners Whiskey. When they return to New Orleans she sees Mount begin to change back to the dominating infuriating man, but she is beginning to realize he has to be this man here....to keep them all safe.

Ends on a freaking cliff hanger giving me severe palpitations!

On to book 3!

Happy Reading! DD

Defiant Queen is the second part in the Mount Trilogy that tells us the love story of Mount, the king of the New Orleans’ underground, and Keira, the woman who challenges him like nobody has ever done before. I loved this book even more than Ruthless King. I devoured Defiant Queen! It was so addictive, steamy and (a little) dark.

There were many chapters told from Mount’s point of view and I loved that! Mount was still a mystery at the end of Ruthless King and I know him better now. There were little peeks into Mount’s life. Mount has a soft side, but he only shows it to Keira. He’s very protective and possessive over Keira. He wants her more than she realizes. Keira is so different than any woman he has met and he loves that.

Keira is still the sassy, passionate, feisty and independent woman as she was in the previous book. She loves the family company and wants to make it even more successful. Keira still isn’t sure what to really think about Mount. A part of her is definitely attracted to him and maybe even starts to like him, but what to think about his dark side? Mount manages to surprise her sometimes and she enjoys that.

I’m really loving Mount and Keira’s story. I’m really loving Mount and Keira together and they’re growing closer. I’m loving getting to know the darker side of New Orleans. I’m loving meeting more people of that dark side and I’m already hoping for some characters to get their own book. But for now, I need to get my hands on Sinful Empire. That cliffhanger was just too shocking. It had me rereading the last few pages and turning the pages hoping for more.

I should've known. I wanted it to be something it was never going to be.

Both these people are vapid, shallow and fickle. They change their minds faster than Beyonce changes her outfits in any video.

It was dizzying.

They're also cliché as all get out.

And the cherry on top is the sex is LAME. How in the sweet Jesus you can make an exhibitionist scene boring is beyond me but this author accomplished it so... brava?

Clearly I'm in the minority, though so YMMV.

The book opens thirty years earlier with the event that set Lachlan on the path to being the man he is today. That glimpse into his past was heartbreaking and just made love him even more.

The cliffhanger from the previous book is next and then it’s Lachlan and Keira together and I loved it.
This is an incredibly short review because after the cliffhanger I’m moving straight onto the third and final book Sinful Empire with no time to waste.

Must read book 1. This book picks up with a little background for Mount and then dives right in where the cliffhanger from book 1 left the reader dangling.

”Dance with me, Lachlan. Dance with me in Dublin.”

Characters
Lachlan Mount (but everyone just uses his last name)
Mount is the king of the New Orleans’ underworld.
The following were the words/phrases used to describe the Hero: his actions are the result of cold, precise calculation; he treats everything like it’s temporary; he rules an empire to get everything he wants; not a good man; black soul; stone heart; dominant; authoritative; smug asshole.

We learn about Mount’s past in the first chapter of this book:
“My first memory was my stomach gnawing on itself, so I’d begged for more dinner and my foster dad had backhanded me across the face. I was four, or so they told me.”

”I dragged myself out of the gutters of this unforgiving city, changed my identity, learned to do whatever I needed to not only survive, but thrive. I became the weed that grows between the sidewalk cracks and refuses to die. I clawed my way up the ladder of this organization and took the throne by force. To the outside world, I rule through fear, intimidation, and the absolute willingness to back up every single fucking threat I make.”

Keira (owner of Seven Sinners Distillery, which makes Irish whiskey):
The following were the words/phrases used to describe the Heroine: Defiant, a temper, fierce, fighting spirit, a flare of rebellion, transparent, hellion, magnetic, shrewd, intelligent, captivating,

Mount: ”I see Keira Kilgore exactly for what she’s becoming—the one woman who might be strong enough to stand by my side and rule an empire.”

Mount: “Keira Kilgore is the opposite. She’s pure. Innocent. Naive as fuck. She still thinks everyone plays by the rules, and good judgment paves the road to success. She’s wrong, but she would never believe me.”

The Story:
After a trip down memory lane to learn a little about Mount’s childhood, the story picks up exactly where book 1 left off.

Mount is still determined to control every aspect of Keira’s life and have her all to himself. Although, toward the end he begins to be honest enough with himself to realize she’s special and he’s not willing to let her go.
Mount: “I told myself it wouldn’t be a problem. I could have her, keep her, control her—and never let her become anything more than a possession. I promised myself I’d stay detached and indifferent, because the alternative never leads anywhere good. I learned that as a kid.”

“I’ve never met a more stubborn woman with such a strong submissive streak. I look forward to taming it but don’t want to extinguish her fire, only guide it in a different direction.”

Keira continues to fight Mount at almost every turn, all the while battling internally with herself because she loves and responds to his domineering side.

Kiera: “At my very core—my deepest, darkest secret depths—this is what I’ve always wanted. Always. A man who wants me with this intense ferocity and makes damn sure I know that I belong to him and only him.”

Mount: ”Keira needs a real man to show her what she’s been missing out on, and I’m here to handle the job . . . and her.”

My Thoughts:
The following are my thoughts about this book:
- I will cut Mount some slack for my disgust with him in book 1 for the Mardi Gras ball thing. Looks like he thought the note was meant for him.
- I liked that I got some more backstory about Mount in this book. It helped to understand why he needs power.
- I loved his support of her business and his belief in her CEO management skills
- I appreciated Mount’s efforts toward the end of the book and how he gave Keira things just to make her happy. No ulterior or controlling motive.
- Their trip to Dublin was fun and Mount made my heart pitter patter a bit 🥰 with the way he did the “tourist” things just to make Keira happy.
- I liked the beginning section and I liked the ending section, but somewhere in the middle it felt like there wasn’t anything going on except for their power struggle and lots of sex. Granted, they had some very hot 🥵🔥 sizzling moments, but not much of a meaty story during that time.
- Of course, Keira’s “back door”/“no-go” zone is quite the topic in this book too. Lots of discussion on that as Mount continues to “prepare” her for his “invasion” 😉. She’s not fighting it anymore, so I guess that will finally happen in book 3. 🤦‍♀️
- Mount begins to bend his domineering ways toward Keira. I liked that he was the first to begin to change and that he was open to other’s opinions and recognized and admitted that Keira was special. “Check your ego at the door. It isn’t going to help you win this battle.” “Figure out what she wants. Give it to her.”
- Once again, I love Keira’s BFF. Keira and Magnolia are entertaining when they get up to no good. Lol.
- Another big cliffhanger, but I expected that seeing as there is another book to finish off this series.

Overall: The middle portion of this book was a bit disappointing as nothing much was going on. Just lots of sex and angst. I didn’t get bored, but I do wish there was a little more happening with the story. There’s a big cliffy ending and I can’t wait to dive into the final book.

Quotes
“I want to spank your ass for putting yourself at risk, and then I want to fuck the hell out of you so there’s no question in your mind about whether I want you. Maybe then you’ll finally realize who you belong to.”

“You make your money feeding people’s addictions. How is it any different from what I do? We’re both in the business of sin, just in different ways.”

“Quit referring to yourself as a dog. You might act like a bitch sometimes, but you’re sure as fuck not as obedient as one.”

“Facing this man is like taking on a Category 5 hurricane.”

“I finally understand the reason it’s called power exchange, but with Mount and me, it’s more accurately termed a power struggle.
He takes. I fight.
He threatens. I rebel.
He taunts. I argue.”

"Neither of us is willing to give an inch. If I do, she’ll take a mile, and if she does, I’ll take a thousand.”

“How long until I lose the very essence of what makes me me?”

“I count to ten, my temper flaring again. I swear, this woman lives to test me.”
