Agnes Blythe and her glamorous Aunt Effie must take a break from restoring their inn to rake in the clues when a local mechanic is murdered in national bestselling author Maia Chance’s charming second Agnes & Effie mystery.
It’s leaf-peeping season in Naneda, New York, and Agnes Blythe has settled into helping her eccentric Great Aunt Effie restore the Stagecoach Inn. It seems nothing can shatter the golden idyll―or the ka-ching of cash registers―until a mechanic at Hatch Automotive is found bludgeoned to death with a wrench.
Sweeping into action, Agnes and Aunt Effie are on the scene, when a tourist-laden motor coach breaks down outside of town. The Stagecoach Inn isn’t exactly ready for guests, but Agnes and Effie agree to take in a group of seniors while they wait for repairs. But then, Agnes finds herself pulled into the investigation when she learns her new boyfriend, gorgeous Otis Hatch, is the Naneda Police Department’s prime suspect.
With bodies falling faster than the foliage, Agnes must leaf through the more viable suspects and clear Otis’s name of murder in Bad Neighbors, the charming second Agnes and Effie mystery from national bestselling author Maia Chance.
Bad Neighbors is the second book in the Agnes & Effie Mystery series. Agnes had a serious falling out with her former fiance in book 1 (he left her for a sexy pilates instructor) and found herself not only heart-broken but homeless. So she joined forces with her Aunt Effie, a feisty older gal, to restore the Stagecoach Inn. The old place has seen many, many better days....
Agnes & Effie have cleaned the inside of the old Victorian. In fact it's spotless. But they are just starting to gauge the enormity of the project ahead of them.....bathroom updates, roof replacement, windows, floors, painting.... It's overwhelming. It's nowhere near time to apply for an innkeeping license or even think about having guests. But when a busload of leaf peepers are stranded by a broken down bus, it seems all the available rooms in town are filled. Four of the leafers will have to stay at the Stagecoach as Effie's guests. They will have plenty to do in town because it's Harvest Festival time in Naneda, NY and there's a murder to investigate. When the tourist bus broke down, the leaf peepers found the body of a local mechanic stuffed in his car trunk at the repair shop. Dead. Bludgeoned with a wrench. And, owner of Hatch Automotive, Otis Hatch (the man Agnes is head over heels in love with) is taken in for questioning. Can Agnes....along with Effie and the four leaf peepers....solve the murder so that Otis can go on a trip to the mountains with her instead of being arrested for murder?
This newest adventure is filled with the same humor and quirky characters as the first book. Fun to read! The mystery is nicely paced with plenty of suspects and twists. Effie is still feisty and Agnes still manages to get herself into trouble. This time even her eyebrows get in on the action. :) I like this series and will definitely be reading more!
Maia Chance also writes the Discreet Retrieval Agency mysteries and the Fairy Tale Fatal series.
**I voluntarily read an advance readers copy of this book from Crooked Lane via NetGalley. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.**
This book was so funny and entertaining! I just loved the seniors who were staying at the inn, affectionately known as "the gaggle" when Agnes would have to take them all somewhere. Once I started reading, I just couldn't put it down! Well written with lots of humor and some very fun and likable characters. I hadn't read the first book but I never felt lost even once reading this one.
When a busload of senior citizens has their bus break down during a leaf-peeping excursion in Naneda, NY, Agnes and her aunt Effie who along with cousin Chester run the Stagecoach Inn, had to get the place ready very quickly for four guests. Since the inn was nowhere really being able to be used by the public, Effie looked at this as a free test run so she treated her guests like royalty. After it was decided that their bus mechanic was murdered and Otis, Agnes's almost-boyfriend was fingered as the suspect, things went on a crazy roller coaster ride.
I loved how the seniors followed along and tried to help or advise during the unofficial investigation. Even if Otis was being led away from her by new cupcake shop owner Delilah, Agnes knew he wasn't guilty and continued her investigation efforts. There were definitely plenty of suspects. I had my suspicions which turned out to be right but it was fun being led one way then another. The whole scene with the Leaf Peeping festival queen and princess was pretty funny even though it could have turned deadly. Everything was wrapped up neatly and Aunt Effie had a fun little surprise at the end for her niece and nephew.
Another scene at the hair salon involving Agnes's eyebrow job was also a funny one that I could just picture in a comedy mystery movie. I think Lo and Myron were my favorite senior couple. Hank was a doctor but being retired he acted more like a 5 year old as far as his needs went and Dorothea just wanted him to notice her. I could imagine wanting to be friends with any and all of the characters in this book, with the exception of the perp and any mean girls that may be mentioned, lol.
I definitely want to read the first book to see how it all got started with the Stagecoach Inn and what mystery they got into in that first book.
Bad Neighbors by Maia Chance is the 2nd book in An Agnes and Effie Mystery Series, and it is even better than the 1st book, Bad Housekeeping. Agnes and her Aunt Effie rush to find the real killer when Agnes love interest Otis is accused of killing one of his employees. You have to love the names in this book, which takes place in Naneda, New York. Not only is this book really funny, it has a great mystery also. The development of the story and characters are so well written. The story is also hilarious yet intense at times. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. If you love cozy mysteries, I strongly recommend this book.
I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
It's leaf peeping season in Naneda and the leaves aren't the only things dying in town! Agnes and Effie aren't through getting their B&B open when they have their first "customers". A tour bus of leaf peepers breaks down at the local garage owned by Otis, Agnes' boyfriend. But when a mechanic is discovered dead at the garage Agnes starts to investigate to try to keep her boyfriend out of jail. Clearing his name will be tougher than she thought and it seems Agnes is in more danger than she bargained for and could be the next victim.
I was given an eARC by the publisher through NetGalley.
The second book in this series and a new author to me. I found and good Plot that was slightly different from the usual cozy mastery. The characters different not development and I didn't relate to them. I have not read the first book but had no trouble following the story and the characters. Agnes Blythe has returned back to her childhood home and has joined her Great Aunt Eddie's in restoring an Inn that once been a slice of pride in Naneda, New York. The inn needs a lot of work and is not open for business. Effie received a phone call asking if she would accommodate passengers from a tour. Their coach had broken down and rooms were full due to the leaf peeping time. Agnes goes to pick up the stranded motorists. On arrival, she finds a murder has just taken place and her boyfriend is the main suspect. Eddie and Agnes decided to explore the murder to clear her boyfriend. At this point, the tale has many twist and turns. The murderer is well concealed and might surprise you. It did me. I recommend this book.
Disclosure: Many thanks to Crooked Lane Books for a review copy. The opinions expressed are my own.
I really enjoyed the first book in Maia Chance’s “An Agnes and Effie Mystery” series, so I was looking forward to her follow up. Well, “Bad Neighbors” did not disappoint! I enjoy the relationship between Agnes (the younger of the dynamic duo) and her aunt Effie. This looks to be one fun and entertaining team of amateur sleuths. I enjoy the setting and cannot wait until they have the Stagecoach Inn fully restored. What with all the antiques and goodies Effie is buying, it sounds like the Inn will be amazing. And I can only imagine the guests that will appear in future books of this great series. As “Bad Neighbors” begins it is leaf-peeping season and Agnes is enjoying her new found home, business and being with her family. That is until a murder and her sort of boyfriend becomes the prime suspect. Well that is not going to work for Agnes or her aunt Effie. The only good thing to come of it is a group of seniors are stuck in town and a few are staying at the inn even if it is not ready. Effie decides it will be a trail run for them and it seems to be working out. The seniors even add in trying to investigate and clear Otis, Agnes sweetie. I really enjoy humor in the cozies I read and Maia Chance seems to really have the knack for it. Scenes between Agnes and her nemesis Delilah are hilarious. I was really worried Otis may be swayed by her cupcakes. So many times I laughed out loud and boy did I enjoy that. Not only did this read tick the boxes in the humor department, but the mystery was intriguing and enjoyable, the characters are well developed and I was really pulled into the story and could not put the book down. If you are a cozy fan and enjoy well written and humorous reads, this is definitely for you. It sure did tick all my boxes. I even love the no dreaded triangle, thank you very much. Agnes and Effie make a wonderful team that I cannot wait to see more of for sure. I really enjoyed “Bad Neighbors” and think even if you have not read the first book, you will enjoy this one. It is funtastic! I was given a copy by the author, however this opinion is mine and not in anyway based on that.
Bad Neighbors by Maia Chance is the second book in the Agnes and Effie series and was set during "leaf peeping" season. This was an enjoyable addition to this series and can easily be read as a standalone.
Ms. Chance has taken the opportunity in this book to develop the characters in more depth which I enjoyed. Agnes is smart but still undecided about staying in Naneda. Agnes has low self-esteem which pops up often throughout the book but it doesn't stop her from investigating the murder with often surprising and humorous results. Since Otis is the number one suspect for the murder, Agnes wants to clear Otis' name - even though Otis seems to have moved on to dating another woman. This small town is filled with quirky townsfolk that add to the mix of murder and mystery. The bus tour seniors who are staying "gratis" at the B & B were a great addition to this story. With plenty of twists, a "gaggle" of seniors and plenty of humor, Agnes and Effie are Naneda's dynamic duo when it comes to crime solving.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All of the above opinions are my own.
It’s leaf season in Naneda and things are happening at the Stagecoach Inn. Who knew how well their guests would fit in with Aunt Effie and Agnes. Seniors are the best! What a delightful bunch of folks! I just love Aunt Effie and poor Agnes, I don’t think she could stay out of trouble if she tried. I must say I am impressed with her carpenter skills. What an interesting story this was. You never knew when you were going to be thrown a little twist. From murder to spa days to parades, buckle up and get ready for the ride with these wonderful characters.
A cute little cozy mystery. The main character Agnes is interesting and likable. She is renovating an Inn with her Aunt Effie. There is an eccentric group of tourists staying at the Inn, who help Agnes and Effie solve the latest murder. They add a lot of comic relief. The local cupcake baker, Delilah is the nemesis that you love to hate. Not only is she rude, but she is after Otis, Agnes' love interest! The book proceeds at a good pace, and the mystery makes sense. Overall this was a good read.
I received an ARC for review from the publisher and the Cozy Mystery Review Crew in exchange for my honest opinion.
Bad Neighbors by Maia Chance is a book so full of surprises you won't want to put it down. What could be better than leaf-peeping season in Naneda, New York? According to Agnes Blythe and her Aunt Effie, it doesn't get much better than this. Repairing and renovating the Stagecoach Inn is high priority, but when a tour bus breaks down, the inn becomes home for a few stranded tourists.
I enjoyed this book so much, I had to purchase the first in the series, Bad Housekeeping. The characters in this book were so lively and entertaining, I did not want to put it down. I was thrilled that the "gaggle" of tourists were involved in the story, they really added some remarkable moments.
This is a series I am putting on my top 10 list of go to books. I love having few books that I will read over and over again, because I enjoy them that much.
Cozy mystery lovers will enjoy this superb mystery.
I voluntarily read an ARC of Bad Neighbors which was offered by NetGalley and the publisher.
Series: An Agnes and Effie Mystery #2 Publication Date: 4/10/18
Welcome to the picturesque small town of Naneda in upstate New York for the foliage viewing season. The town is filled with funny, quirky and unique residents who will become some of your favorite book friends. The title characters are the pudgy, twenty-nine-year-old Agnes Blythe who has body image issues and her seventy-something, former super-model great-aunt Effie who has inherited a ramshackle, historic inn that she and Agnes are restoring. The supporting characters are also back and they are as much fun as ever! The book will give you belly-laughs and at the same time, there is an intense murder mystery to solve. It is an excellently written and fun read!
A leaf-viewing tour bus breaks down and pulls into the local garage for repairs. The occupants have to be put up in local lodging for the night – but the local inns are almost filled to capacity. They divide the members of the tour group out among the inns, but they still need more rooms. The only option is to get The Stagecoach Inn to take some of the group even though the Inn isn’t ready for occupancy yet. Boy – are those folks in for a surprise.
While the tour group is waiting at the garage for the various inns to pick them up, one of the group discovers a dead body. As Agnes arrives to pick them up, there are police cruisers everywhere with lights flashing – and – is that Otis they are putting into the back of the police car? Otis and Agnes are sorta/kinda dating and he absolutely cannot have murdered anyone!
Aggie and Effie decide they need to investigate to clear Otis’ name because the police detective seems to have fixated on Otis as the only suspect. The plot is complex, but Aggie and Effie’s investigation will keep you in stitches. I love that the tourists play such a major role in the investigation. There are lots of red herrings to keep us and our investigators guessing right up to the very end. The identity of the murderer will surprise you!
I highly recommend this book. It is funny and entertaining – just wait for their spa visit! If you want a book that will leave you refreshed and feeling good after you finish reading it, then this is the one for you!
"I requested and received this e-book at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher."
BAD NEIGHBORS, the second book in the Agnes and Effie Mystery Series, is a hoot! Even though I have not read the fist in the series, BAD HOUSEKEEPING, I had no trouble diving right into the story. Chance’s writing style and her ability to craft zany characters and hilarious situations makes BAD NEIGHBORS a joy to read. The pace is quick, and the steady revelation of clues lends itself of compulsive reading. Highly recommended!
In BAD NEIGHBORS, we find Agnes, her great-aunt Effie, and cousin Chester a bit overwhelmed with everything that needs to be done to the Stagecoach Inn to make it ready for guests. However, when a tour bus full of senior citizen “leaf peepers” breaks down, Effie volunteers to house four of the travelers, thinking it will be a great trial run before they open up to paying guests. Effie’s plan is to keep them plied with plenty of alcohol so that they don’t pay too close attention to the inn. Despite the bathrooms needing a remodel, mattresses placed directly on the floor, and mice in the walls, the group settles in nicely. This is the same group that discovered the body of Mikey Brown, a mechanic at Hatch Automotive. To make matters worse, Agnes’s sort-of boyfriend Otis is the police’s prime suspect. Agnes makes it her mission to clear Otis’s name and find the real murderer with the help of Effie and their “gaggle” of guests.
Agnes and Effie make an uproarious, bubbling investigating team. The predicaments they find themselves in are unpredictable and larger than life. I really liked that the senior guests got in on the investigation. The circumstances that lead to Agnes being the Gourd Queen for the Harvest Festival are funny, and Lo, one of the guests, is relentlessly amusing in her quest to find Agnes a love match. The snide conversations between Agnes and her cupcake baking rival Delilah are the best parts of the book. The mystery is complicated enough to be interesting, and all of the suspects have viable motives. It just takes Agnes a while to ferret through all of the information, and everything ties together nicely in the end.
I greatly enjoyed my time with Agnes and Effie and cannot wait to read their next adventure.
I received a copy of this title from the publisher and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.
I loved this book! I was initially attracted to the series because it is set in the Finger Lakes region of Central New York, about 2 1/2 hours from where I live. The area is known for its wines, particularly Rieslings, and apple farming. So when a tour bus of "Leaf Peepers" finds that they are stranded in Naneda with no available lodging, Agnes and her Aunt Effie are asked to take them into their unfinished bed and breakfast. They don't have an occupancy certificate so they can't charge any money for the guests' stay but think that they will gain free publicity. Agnes' sort-of boyfriend, Otis, is under suspicion for the murder of Mikey--a local mechanic so she decides she must do all she can to clear his name. While Aunt Effie and Cousin Chester drive "the gaggle" as the guests are called, around town, Agnes is getting too close to the killer and faces her own danger.
The cozy was such a fun read. Aunt Effie has such a bold personality, with her Benson-Hedges cigarette always dangling from her mouth. The mystery had so many layers and there were far more characters involved than I would have originally thought. The story was written so tightly that I didn't feel overwhelmed in any way. I found myself laughing throughout the book, which was a real plus and made this a 5 star book for me. While I did read the previous book, this can be read as a standalone as well. I also liked the conclusion, no cliffhanger, but a nice reward to all of their hard work.
** Thanks to NetGalley for a complimentary copy of this book. My review is voluntary.
This is the second Agnes and Effie Mystery and let me tell you, it was just as good as the first one Bad Housekeeping. I do believe this is now my favorite series of cozy mysteries. Agnes and Effie are hilarious. Some of the situations they get themselves into are laugh out loud. In Bad Neighbors, Effie is going ahead with renovations of the Stage Coach Inn when she gets a call from a broken down motor coach needing some accommodations for their stranded passengers. Effie agrees to accommodate them, for free of course. When Agnes goes to Hatch automotive, which is run by her boyfriend, there has been a murder. Of course Owen, her boyfriend, is the prime suspect, so Agnes and Effie are on the case along with cousin Chester and the “gaggle” (the guests of the Stage Coach Inn). This book was very well written and flowed so well. Of course it was so entertaining that I could hardly put it down. Agnes is a character after my own heart. She is a nerd who is a little clumsy and always seems to come out the worse for the wear. Effie is her great-aunt and cigarette smoking side kick. There are many suspects in this one for Agnes and Effie to investigate and they not only uncover who the murderer is, but they also uncover some other dastardly doings in the town of Naneda. Again, this has become my favorite series and I am anxiously awaiting more from this talented author.
Aunt Effie is really growing on me. Otis, not so much. Taking it slow is one thing. Sending mixed messages, emotions running hot and cold are quite another. I liked this complex mystery with plenty of suspects. So far, one of my favorite characters is Chester. Great ending . . .
Bad Neighbors earns 5/5 Leaf Peeping Tours…Murderously Fun!
I have changed my newbie status to big fan! Maia Chance made it easy to join in by revisiting enough background and character connections without spoilers, but it's only book two, so she is developing the series and evolving lead and supporting characters for the long haul. The storyline is delightful with Agnes Blythe helping her Great Aunt Effie restore the Stagecoach Inn, and although the Inn isn't ready for guests, they decide to be “good neighbors” by opening up the Inn to some stranded seniors. The seniors are enjoying “leaf peeping” season in Naneda, New York, but their motor coach has broken down, and now…the mechanic is found bludgeoned, and Agnes’s sorta/kinda boyfriend is a “person of interest.” Along with an intricate murder mystery with twists, turn, and some nail-biting predicaments, Maia has created a plethora of rich characters, humor, and an entertaining dynamic across the generations. All this and well-written description and dialogue kept me totally involved. I will be reading book one “Bad Housekeeping” to see how this adventure for Agnes and Effie started. I highly recommend this book as a starting point.
It’s tourist season in Naneda, New York. Agnes Blythe has settle back home helping her eccentric Great Aunt Effie restore the Stagecoach Inn. It seems nothing can shatter the cash registers until a mechanic is found bludgeoned to death with a wrench.
Leaping into action, Agnes and Aunt Effie are there when a tourist-laden motor coach breaks down outside of town. The Stagecoach Inn isn’t exactly ready for guests, but Agnes and Effie agree to take in a group of senior tourist while they wait for repairs. But Agnes finds herself pulled into a murder investigation when she learns her new boyfriend, gorgeous Otis Hatch, is the Naneda Police Department’s prime suspect.
With bodies falling faster than the foliage, Agnes and Effie must leaf through the more viable suspects and clear Otis’s name of murder before it’s too late.

Series: An Agnes and Effie Mystery Author: Maia Chance Genre: Cozy Mystery/B&B Publisher: Crooked Lane Books - Publishing Date: April 10, 2018 (Kindle)
Bad Neighbors is a wonderful trip through a small town with big city problems, great food, and wonderful residents. It brings out the protective side of the reader and the adventurous side as well. This is the second book in the Agnes and Effie Mystery series.
Agnes is still coming to grips with her failed relationship but isn’t as heartbroken as she should be. A new romance with Otis hatch is making things much easier. But with her plans up in the air and an uncertain future she is afraid to commit, not just to Otis but with her aunt and the B&B. Agnes is a hard worker with an almost insatiable curiosity that gets her in deep trouble when she least needs it.
Aunt Effie is everything anyone would love to have in a relative. She is charming, curious, filled with ideas and has a very keen sense on how older women should dress, which doesn’t include sensible clothing or shoes.
All the characters in this book are memorable and easy to like, except for the killer and that is exactly the way a good mystery should be. The victim(s) aren’t perfect but they deserve justice, and Agnes is determined to put the right criminal behind bars. Unfortunately, her new boyfriend is the main suspect.
Readers will love Bad Neighbors and the writing style of Maia Chance. Characters and locations are described lovingly without too much information that so often bogs down a good book. The writing is smooth with no awkward segues that go nowhere or leave the reader with more questions than answers. This book and series are highly recommended for anyone who loves great characters, a wonderful storyline and human flaws.
I really enjoyed this novel! It was the first book I have read from the author, Maia Chance, and I would highly recommend checking it out if you enjoy family-oriented cozy mysteries!
The book is set in Naneda, New York (upstate), where the protagonist, Agnes, is restoring a historical inn with her great-aunt, Effie, and her cousin, Chester. The three are in the process of renovating the the inn they own, when they volunteer (Effie, excitedly; Agnes and Chester, reluctantly) to put up a few tourists when their bus breaks down. While showing the tourists around town, a murder takes place, and the prime suspect is Otis- Agnes' kind-of boyfriend. Agnes and Effie decide to investigate the murder while they begin their crash course in inn-keeping. Did Otis commit the crime? What is the status of Otis and Agnes' relationship? What is a Gourd Queen? For the answer to these questions, you'll have to dive right into Bad Neighbors and uncover the answers!
I enjoyed this book for many reasons. I appreciated the loving relationship between Agnes and Effie, and even Chester at time (when he wasn't eating cheese puffs!). The characters themselves are very relatable .. specifically the way the writing expresses the common slang of our time. Also, the perspective of the story being told in first person makes it easy to jump right in and become a part of the story.
The location of the story (Naneda, New York) is an integral part of the story. As with most cozy mysteries, the location of the novel adds to the overall atmosphere and makes the reader want to jump right in and join the story.
Overall, I loved Bad Neighbors, and think it should be added to the to-be-read pile of anyone who enjoys or is interested in cozy mysteries. Happy reading!
Mia Chance is a new-to-me author. This book is the second in the series but first I have read. It can be read as a standalone. I had no trouble following the story.
It’s leaf-peeping season in Naneda, New York, (a fictional town) and Agnes Blythe has settled into helping her eccentric Great Aunt Effie restore the Stagecoach Inn, the family bed and breakfast. What drew me in was the cover. It reminded me of many homes along the Finger Lakes as I was growing up. Then a great follow up with the description being full of action. I have always enjoyed watching the trees change colors in the fall in upstate New York.
Thus began my journey. I really liked the use of the stranded motorists assisting in solving the crime. There is plenty of humor, great characters, and a sound plot. What a wonderful romp. As per many cozies, our sleuth is trying to keep someone from being arrested. In this case it’s Otis Hatch, high school boyfriend and currently the head mechanic at Hatch Automotive. It appears the detective thinks he has a slam dunk case against Otis but that is to be seen.
I like how snooping has consequences and Agnes’ eyebrows pay the price.
Looking forward to reading about the renovation of the Stage Coach Inn and other adventures the crew has along the way.
I definitely will be getting Bad Housekeeping, the first in the series, to catch up.
I received a hardcover copy from the publisher and these are my own opinions.
A fun mystery, with some humor right at the start such as when Agnes asked her Aunt Effie if she was insane. She started to say no and that several people had asked that.
Agnes and Chester were renovating an old house. The architect asked if they had any experience and they said no, but they watch a lot of H.G.T.V. Ha, ha! Me too. I liked how Agnes really got into doing the renovations. She found that it made her feel good, especially when she tore up the floor.
I enjoyed the scenes with the rivalry between Delilah and Agnes. There was also a cat named Tiger Boy. I always enjoy animals in cozies. I also liked when Agnes took the gaggle (their senior citizen guests) around town. Lo was crazy at times.
This is also one of those stories where the main character doesn't know if she wants to stay in her hometown after coming back. I'm not really into that theme. There's some romantic tension with her boyfriend Otis too.
The author used some modern words such as welp and m-kay which I don't really consider words, but I think she was having fun with them since her other books are historical ones. I will probably read more of her books since I own a couple of the Fairy Tale Fatal ones and also have Gin and Panic (love that title!) checked out of the library.
Agnes and Effie are at it again. When Mikey is murdered and it looks like Agnes's potential boyfriend is the suspect, she and her Aunt Effie begin to investigate. Since it is also festival time, and the town wants to look good for the judge sent in to decided if their town festival is best, there are additional complexities.
When a tour bus breaks down, Effie invites some of the seniors on the tour to stay at their new inn which is definitely not ready for guests. Between entertaining them and investigating, Agnes almost doesn't have time to worry about her relationship with Otis. There were a great many characters to keep track of in this story and only Delilah who owns the cupcake shop was distinct since she and Agnes were rivals for Otis's affections.
This cozy features a young woman who is snarky but also insecure. She enjoys being back in her hometown but hasn't yet decided to put down roots (which is part of the problem with her relationship with Otis). This is definitely a cozy mystery with a nice dash of humor.
Agnes and her Aunt Effie are getting started on renovating the family's historic landmark inn when a Leaf Peeper tour bus breaks down and some of the tourists need a place to stay. Although not technically open for business, Aunt Effie decides that they'd love to have the company and invites four of the tour to stay at the inn. Unfortunately, when Agnes goes to pick the guests up at the mechanic, she arrives to police cars, an ambulance and the sight of her maybe (maybe not) boyfriend being ushered into a police car. Turns out, one of the mechanics was found murdered by the tour group and Agnes' man (or is he?) is the prime suspect.
Can Agnes and Effie find the real killer before the killer finds them? Will they get the inn renovated? Will Agnes get that nasty Delilah Fortune away from the man she loves?
I loved this book! I hadn't read the first in the series but, I don't think it deterred anything from my reading of this book. Agnes and her friends are fun characters and I love her Aunt Effie! The Leaf Peeper group were fun as well. I can honestly say that I started reading this book this morning and read until I was finished with it cause I could not put it down. Can't wait for the next in the series!
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
A fun and entertaining cozy mystery that immediately grabbed my attention and kept me glued to the book from beginning to end while turning the pages faster than ever to see what would happen. I loved the main character Agnes Blythe who is helping her Aunt Effie and cousin Chester restore the historic Stagecoach Inn in Naneda, a small town in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Agnes and Aunt Effie made a great sleuthing duo when her maybe boyfriend, Otis Hatch, becomes the prime suspect in the murder of a mechanic at Hatch Automotive. At the same time they are entertaining a group of stranded senior citizens when their leaf-peeping tour bus breaks down.
This fast-paced mystery has lots of interesting suspects, twists, turns and surprises. It is the first book I have read by Maia Chance and I look forward to reading more by this talented author. Bad Neighbors is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a well-crafted and delightful small town cozy mystery. I am voluntarily reviewing an advance reader copy of this book and liked it so much, I purchased a copy for my Kindle.
I received this book as an arc so I ordered book one and read that first. I loved this book. There's the bond between Agnes and her aunt Effie which closely resembles the bond between my niece Bella and myself. While she's more of the fashionista like aunt Effie and I'm the t-shirt and jeans Agnes. I really liked that Agnes is a skinny girl but a plump woman who still has two men fighting for her. While that's a great part I'm glad she upped the danger Agnes found herself in. I loved that we had a group of elderly visitors who helped out and still the same old gang also helping. I loved that we had a new foe Delilah to compete for Otis attention. There was still Agnes cousin Chester and her best friend Lauren helping Agnes and Aunt Effie in the second book and also having a romantic triangle. When someone gets killed in Hatch Automotive Otis the prime suspect. So Agnes and Aunt Effie spring into action to bring the real killer into action. It was a great action packed sequel. I highly recommend it.
This series is a comedic hoot! You have an aunt who is elderly, but don't tell her that! A cousin who is genius level IQ, talented carpenter and completely lost when it comes to social skills and then there is Agnes. Again, quite intelligent, eats her way through every day and completely insecure in who she is and yet rather than finding it annoying, you still like her. This particular story finds the trio still trying to renovate the Inn, trying to fit into the town, taking on a group of stranded senior citizens and trying to help solve a murder, or two or more all while tossing sarcastic, witty banter about. If you like your mystery more on the comedy end of the spectrum then this book is definitely for you, but don't fret there is plenty of plot and angst woven in to keep the books firmly in the mystery genre. I'll look forward to the next installment in the Agnes & Effie series!
I was laughing from the get-go. The second book in the series is a definite recommendation. Agnes Blythe is becoming one of my favorite amateur sleuths. Maia Chance does a great job creating dialogue between her many characters. In the first book, Agnes’ aunt – Effie (I love her!) – has been left the Stagecoach Inn and Effie, Agnes, and her cousin Chester are working hard to renovate and restore it so they can be up and running. In this book, the renovations are coming along and Agnes is now living in the Inn’s attic.
When mechanic Mikey turns up dead at Hatch Automotive, owned and run by Otis Hatch, Agnes’ love interest, all signs point to Otis as the murderer. Unable to let the police do their job since it seems they are adamant about Otis being the doer, Agnes, along with Effie, and a motley crew of senior citizens (a hilarious bunch), who end up as guests at the Stagecoach Inn after their tour bus breaks down, are on a mission to clear his name. While they investigate we meet many characters that all have some ties to Mikey and are possible suspects.
I hope we get many Agnes & Effie books as they are entertaining, funny, and just downright good. I definitely look forward to the next book in the series.
Agnes Blythe is in town to help her Aunt Effie and her Cousin Chester renovate the historic Stagecoach Inn. She's not sure how she feels being back in Naneda, New York, but she's glad to help. When her maybe boyfriend, Otis, is accused of murder, she's determined to prove him innocent. I liked Agnes. She may consider herself a nerd. I liked to think of her as an original who can find clues even while she manages a group of Seniors stranded in town. Her dialogue is sassy and her leaf-peepers add their personalities to keep the zingers coming. Aunt Effie is the perfect companion. Her zest for life is amazing. She's leaps off the page.. The murders are shocking. Otis is a handsome distraction. I really wanted Agnes and Otis to be honest with each other. The peaceful setting is the perfect backdrop to highlight the crimes. Bad Neighbors is a fast paced mystery that has plenty of twists. With so many suspects I didn't know who committed the crimes or why. I was shocked by the ending. Maia Chance hooked me with her vivid characters, involved plot and touch of romance. I know that in the future I will be following the adventures of Agnes and Aunt Effie.
I have to say I got way more chuckles out of this story than I have in many others and that is definitely a good thing!! From page one to the end of the story you couldn't help but giggle at all the crazy things Agnes and Effie were doing to figure out who the murderer actually was!! And seriously I was surprised to find out who did it!! I love reading stories that mention cities and towns and other things that I am very familiar with and this one was just that!! I may have been in a town like Naneda, NY at some point in my life being that I grew up in that region of NY!! I can relate to Agnes in so many ways and Effie would definitely be a great aunt to have!! The Peepers were another great addition to the story and really brought some interesting light to the murder investigation. I hope they show up in future stories! The more I read this story the more I want to open a B&B in a small town in the Finger Lakes Region of New York!! I definitely recommend this book and look forward to reading more Agnes and Effie Mysteries!
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series, Bad Housekeeping. Agnes and Effie are a great duo and I was looking forward to this book continuing the series. I was not shocked it was better than the first. The characters keep getting more developed and enjoyable. Agnes is very likable and the banter she has with Aunt Effie really makes this series for me. The pace is fast, and I love the comedy involved. I can't wait to see what they keep doing to the Stagecoach Inn, and really look forward to more books about Agnes, Effie, Otis, and the rest of the gang from Naneda. I did receive this book in exchange for an honest review, but all opinions are my own.
